A Nurse Leader Residency Program: Improving Leadership Competencies, Melanie Stanton Apr 2022

A Nurse Leader Residency Program: Improving Leadership Competencies, Melanie Stanton

Epsilon Sigma at-Large Research Conference

Ballad Health nurse leaders received little nursing leadership education or competency development before beginning their leadership roles; yet they are crucial to improve quality, safety, cost, patient experience, and team member engagement. Competency development is linked to improved nurse leader confidence, job satisfaction, and retention. Additionally, the organization is experiencing a shortage of prepared internal candidates to fill vacant nurse manager positions. The organization’s Chief Nursing Council (CNC) questioned if a leadership development program could improve new and aspiring nurse managers' leadership competency. The CNC aimed to improve nurse leader competency by implementing and measuring the effectiveness of an evidence-based …

The Role And Strategies Of Food Manufacturers Towards Obesity And Health Policies, Emem Okpokowuruk Apr 2022

The Role And Strategies Of Food Manufacturers Towards Obesity And Health Policies, Emem Okpokowuruk

Epsilon Sigma at-Large Research Conference

Introduction & Background: Unhealthy diets and non-communicable diseases such as obesity are on the rise on a national and global scale, and there is an urgent need to initiate interventions. However, research suggests there is a lack of effective initiatives from major processed food manufacturers, which are a major contributor to the cause of these health issues. Thus, this study seeks to examine the role that food manufacturers have in contributing to the obesity epidemic and the strategies that they use to navigate around health policies.

Purpose Statement Question: Is there evidence of a primary role that processed food manufacturers …

Smoking And Opiate Withdrawal Symptoms: The Impact Of Psychosocial Variables Among Individuals Receiving Medication Assisted Treatment For Opioid Detox, Cristina Abarno Apr 2022

Smoking And Opiate Withdrawal Symptoms: The Impact Of Psychosocial Variables Among Individuals Receiving Medication Assisted Treatment For Opioid Detox, Cristina Abarno

LSU Master's Theses

Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) endorse high rates of combustible smoking (Zale et al., 2015) which is associated with poorer outcomes (e.g., opioid craving and lower detoxification completion rates) among individuals receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT; Mannelli, Wu, Peindl, & Gorelick, 2013) and lower smoking cessation rates in smoking cessation treatment (Okoli et al., 2010). The complex pharmacological relationship between opioids and nicotine may help explain these findings (Kohut, 2017), however little is known about psychosocial variables that influence MAT processes among combustible smokers with OUD. The present study sought to expand upon prior work (Mannelli et al., 2013) by …

Potential Benefits Of Combined Statin And Metformin Therapy On Resistance Training Response In Older Individuals, Douglas E. Long, Kate Kosmac, Cory M. Dungan, Marcas M. Bamman, Charlotte A. Peterson, Phillip A. Kern

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Metformin and statins are currently the focus of large clinical trials testing their ability to counter age-associated declines in health, but recent reports suggest that both may negatively affect skeletal muscle response to exercise. However, it has also been suggested that metformin may act as a possible protectant of statin-related muscle symptoms. The potential impact of combined drug use on the hypertrophic response to resistance exercise in healthy older adults has not been described. We present secondary statin analyses of data from the MASTERS trial where metformin blunted the hypertrophy response in healthy participants (>65 years) following 14 weeks …

Sensory Preference And Learning Preference In Children With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Dyslexia, Jennifer Gomez, Hope Mccarroll, Lisa Griggs-Stapleton

Spring 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Is there a connection between a child’s sensory preferences and their learning preference? Sensory processing disorders are a heavily researched topic in current literature and many children with sensory differences present with learning disabilities, but research is lacking concerning any connection between sensory processing and learning. This research study examines children’s sensory preferences and learning preferences and denotes trends between these two variables. 15 participants were recruited from the Accommodated Learning Academy in Grapevine, Texas, a private school for students 1st-12th grade with learning delays. The sample of 15 participants consisted of 12 females and 3 males, aged 11-15 years …

Early Childhood Intervention Curriculum Creation: Using Playful Project-Based Learning, Hannah Shullenberger Million Apr 2022

Early Childhood Intervention Curriculum Creation: Using Playful Project-Based Learning, Hannah Shullenberger Million

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study is to present an early intervention curriculum incorporating Project-Based Learning (PBL) and opportunities for play. The project aims to answer the questions: What does a Project-Based Learning curriculum model look like in high quality early childhood special education? How does PBL curriculum work in conjunction with play? The created curriculum answers these questions based on a review of research and guidance from three theoretical frameworks: a Vygotskian Tools of the Mind approach (Bodrova & Leong, 1996), implementation of PBL in early childhood (Lev et al., 2020) and the early intervention Building Blocks framework (Sandall et …

Examining American Adult’S Mental Well And Ill-Being During The 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic Using A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Lauren N. Jordan, C. Veronica Smith

Faculty and Student Publications

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic is an international health crisis that has caused unprecedented shifts in people’s environments and has threatened people’s wellbeing. The current study uses self-determination theory (SDT: 10) to understand how people were handling the pandemic, which proposes three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) are vital for human growth and thriving. Furthermore, we examined how people’s wellbeing and ill-being changed over the course of the pandemic. Methods: A sample of 193 American adults from around the country reported on their need satisfaction and frustration as well as well and ill-being at three time periods during the …

Biology Faculty Research

Nonhuman primates (NHP) are particularly important for modeling infections with viruses that do not naturally replicate in rodent cells. Zika virus (ZIKV) has been responsible for sporadic epidemics, but in 2015 a disseminated outbreak of ZIKV resulted in the World Health Organization declaring it a global health emergency. Since the advent of this last epidemic, several NHP species, including the baboon, have been utilized for modeling and understanding the complications of ZIKV infection in humans; several health issues related to the outcome of infection have not been resolved yet and require further investigation. This study was designed to validate, in …

From The Battlefield To The Classroom: An Exploration Of Post-9/11 Female Combat Veterans Who Completed Graduate School After Military Service, Arthur Littler Iii

Dissertations

Since 2011, approximately 200,000 service members transitioned from military service to the civilian sector each year (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). , 2014). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2018 Employment Situation of Veterans Summary report, 8.9% of veterans were disadvantaged as they have little to no higher education. Without a financial support system to fall back on, transitioning veterans face the inevitable issue of homelessness. Research by Tsai, Hoff, and Harpaz- Rotem (2017) found the rate of homelessness among veterans has increased over the past decade with female veterans more likely than their male counterparts to …

Effects Of Weight-Bearing On Tibiofemoral, Patellofemoral, And Patellar Tendon Kinematics In Older Adults, Vasiliki Kefala, Azhar A. Ali, Landon D. Hamilton, Erin M. Mannen, Kevin B. Shelburne Apr 2022

Effects Of Weight-Bearing On Tibiofemoral, Patellofemoral, And Patellar Tendon Kinematics In Older Adults, Vasiliki Kefala, Azhar A. Ali, Landon D. Hamilton, Erin M. Mannen, Kevin B. Shelburne

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Quantification of natural knee kinematics is essential for the assessment of joint function in the diagnosis of pathologies. Combined measurements of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint kinematics are necessary because knee pathologies, such as progression of osteoarthritis and patellar instability, are a frequent concern in both articulations. Combined measurement of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral kinematics also enables calculation of important quantities, specifically patellar tendon angle, which partly determines the loading vector at the tibiofemoral joint and patellar tendon moment arm. The goals of this research were to measure the differences in tibiofemoral and patellofemoral kinematics, patellar tendon angle (PTA), and patellar tendon …

Influence Of Nutrient Contamination On Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Tidal Freshwater Creeks, Molly Curling, Mika Bishton Apr 2022

Influence Of Nutrient Contamination On Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Tidal Freshwater Creeks, Molly Curling, Mika Bishton

Research and Creativity Symposium

Freshwater ecosystems are some of the most biodiverse on the planet, but they are threatened due to human actions resulting in habitat loss, pollution, and nutrient runoff. Macroinvertebrates can be used to measure the health of a freshwater system because different taxa have different tolerances to pollutants. However, the relationship between nutrient runoff and macroinvertebrates remains understudied. Accokeek Creek and Aquia Creek are two tidal freshwater streams in Stafford, VA. Accokeek Creeks drains a watershed containing the Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve and minimal development. Aquia Creek’s watershed is largely suburban. The objectives of this study were a) to examine …

The Effect Of The Sleep Promotion Interventions On Incidence Of Delirium In Intensive Care Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Sarah Lee Apr 2022

The Effect Of The Sleep Promotion Interventions On Incidence Of Delirium In Intensive Care Patients: An Integrative Literature Review, Sarah Lee

Nursing Masters Papers

Sleep is vital to our health, and prolonged sleep deprivation can result in serious health problems. Yet, patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) commonly experience sleep deprivation due to the environment and necessary treatments. High noise levels, bright lights, frequent patient care activities, mechanical ventilator desynchrony, pain, anxiety, and medications are the main factors that disrupt patients’ sleep architecture and affect sleep quality. Sleep deprivation is a significant contributor to the development of delirium, which is associated with poor patient outcomes and added financial burden. Implementation of sleep promotion interventions may decrease the incidence of this detrimental illness. The …
