Integrating Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Program In Adult Day Cares For Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease, Stephany Hernandez

MOT Student Capstones

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia in individuals over 65. There is currently no cure for AD, and deaths related to AD are rising compared to other diseases. A person with AD exhibits impaired cognition, short-term memory, behavioral disturbances, poor judgment, and language abnormalities. Therefore, there is a higher risk for geriatric depression and decreased quality of life. Prescription drugs are used to target AD symptoms; however, outcomes and benefits are limited over time. Families and caregivers are also affected by the mental and emotional deterioration of their loved ones. In an effort to relieve the …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Recent approvals of siRNA-based products motivated the scientific community to explore siRNA as a treatment option for several intractable ailments, especially cancer. The success of approved siRNA therapy requires a suitable and safer drug delivery agent. Herein, we report a series of oleyl conjugated histidine–arginine peptides as a promising nonviral siRNA delivery tool. The conjugated peptides were found to bind with the siRNA at N/P ratio ≥ 2 and demonstrated complete protection for the siRNA from early enzymatic degradation at N/P ratio ≥ 20. Oleyl-conjugated peptide -siRNA complexes were found to be noncytotoxic in breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) …

Open Access Publications

INTRODUCTION: There is an urgent need to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly in low-and middle-income countries, where the greatest burden lies. Yet, there is little research concerning the specific issues involved in scaling up NCD interventions targeting low-resource settings. We propose to examine this gap in up to 27 collaborative projects, which were funded by the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD) 2019 Scale Up Call, reflecting a total funding investment of approximately US$50 million. These projects represent diverse countries, contexts and adopt varied approaches and study designs to scale-up complex, evidence-based interventions to improve hypertension and …

Designing Moocs With Little, Hengtao Tang, Yingxiao Qian Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been touted as a disruptive innovation with a low-cost and flexible option for opening up higher education. However, existing barriers of MOOCs such as a low retention rate and a low forum participation rate have limited their capacity of serving learners. To strengthen the potential of MOOCs, a compelling design that enables an effective learning experience is needed. This article is aimed to propose a series of design guidelines for MOOCs, namely the LITTLE, as a preliminary design framework for an effective MOOC. The LITTLE includes guidelines such as learner-centered, inquiry-based, technology-enriched, trophy-driven, literature-guided, …

Kinesiophobia Effects On Returning To Sports Following Shoulder Injuries, Haley Burke Apr 2022

Kinesiophobia Effects On Returning To Sports Following Shoulder Injuries, Haley Burke

Honors College Theses

Kinesiophobia is a condition in which patients experience an excessive, irrational, and often debilitating fear of movement or physical activity that results in a feeling of vulnerability in which they believe movement will cause painful (re)injury. There is limited research on the effects of kinesiophobia in athletes who suffered shoulder injuries, so the purpose of our research was to examine kinesiophobia effects in adult male baseball players who returned to sport following a shoulder injury. We hypothesized the presence of kinesiophobia and tried to measure its degree level using the 11-item Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-11) to assess fear during …

To date, there are no known systematically analyzed data that explores the breadth of geriatric content in the local BSPT programs. This study aimed to describe the integration of geriatric-related content in the pre-clinical and clinical entry-level PT curricula.

Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional research design using survey instrumentation was conducted among heads and PT educators in higher educational …

Skin Pigmentation And Arterial Stiffness In Young Health Black And White Adults, Zoe R. Lincoln Apr 2022

Skin Pigmentation And Arterial Stiffness In Young Health Black And White Adults, Zoe R. Lincoln

Honors College Theses

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is currently the leading cause of death worldwide, killing over half a million people in the US every year. This issue is only becoming more prominent, as both the world and US population are experiencing increased rates of CVD risk factors such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Black Americans specifically are experiencing increased rates of these risk factors, possibly due to lifestyle, socioeconomic, and genetic variables, ultimately leading to a higher prevalence of CVD in this population. One possible mechanism for this health disparity is racial differences in skin pigmentation, which can influence cardioprotective Vitamin …
