National Policy Consensus Center Publications
In 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed ORS 536.220, which directed the Oregon Water Resources Department (OWRD) to develop an integrated water resources strategy and gave it authority to make grants and provide technical assistance to communities seeking to engage in place-based planning integrated water resources planning (hereafter place-based planning). The legislation provided a means by which Oregon communities could coordinate an assessment of the water needs of instream and out-of-stream water interests in their area and reach agreement on how those needs could be met now and in the future. Legislators structured the program to give persons who live, work, …

Clinician’S Perspectives In Using Head Impulse-Nystagmus-Test Of Skew For Acute Vestibular Syndrome: Uk Experience, Charlotte L. Warner, Lisa Bunn, Nehzat Koohi, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Jennifer Freeman, Diego Kaski
School of Health Professions
Background Acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) features continuous dizziness and may result from a benign inner ear disorder or stroke. The head impulse-nystagmus-test of skew (HINTS) bedside assessment is more sensitive than brain MRI in identifying stroke as the cause of AVS within the first 24 hours. Clinicians’ perspectives of the test in UK secondary care remains unknown. Here, we explore front-line clinicians’ perspectives of use of the HINTS for the diagnosis of AVS.Methods Clinicians from two large UK hospitals who assess AVS patients completed a short online survey, newly designed with closed and open questions. Results Almost half of 73 total …

Student-Athletes And Mental Health Services: Increasing Utilization, Allyson Degraaf
Student-Athletes And Mental Health Services: Increasing Utilization, Allyson Degraaf
Masters Projects
Despite the clear need, the student-athlete population continues to underutilize mental health services on campus. This project explores literature regarding mental health concerns for non-student athletes and student-athletes and barriers to utilization for both student populations. Following Rosenstock's (1996) Health Belief Model, a solution to increase the utilization of mental health services for student-athletes is to create a four-hour cultural competency training course for counselors and improve early intervention by providing a robust onboarding program for first-year student-athletes. The overall intent of this project is to encourage self-efficacy in student-athletes to seek help if needed, as well as provide well-rounded …

Considerable numbers of US secondary students are considered “chronically absent” each year. These students face many obstacles and barriers in which making it to school challenging. Additionally, adverse effects both academically and social/emotionally are observed in those chronically absent as well as their fellow classmates. As a result, there is a great need for education and awareness among parents, guardians, administration, and school staff (teachers, counselors) This project will closely examine literature on chronic absenteeism both in and out of the American Public school setting as well as provide targeted intervention in the form of small group counseling plans as …

The Transfer Equity Program A Plan To Increase Baccalaureate Attainment For Students Of Color, Knodel M. Knodel
Masters Projects
The primary goal of a higher education institution is to provide students with a quality education and help them obtain a bachelor’s degree. By earning a bachelor’s degree this provide an opportunity of a social mobility. The racial institutional stratification in higher education continues to be problematic for underrepresented students and their baccalaureate attainment goals. This issue is important to address, for students of color who start at a community college and transfer to a degree granting institution. The project will explain institutional barriers that students of color face in their post- secondary transition. The project will offer specific services …

Improving Academic Experiences Of K-12 Students Through Trauma-Informed Practices, Karen E. Knaebel
Masters Projects
Adverse childhood experiences, also known as ACEs are being identified in K-12 schools. ACEs can be described as abuse, neglect, and trauma that negatively affects the child. It has been shown that ACEs can lead to mental and physical health impairments and can physically change the brain. This can cause barriers to learning and academic achievement. In my master’s project, I address this problem. I also provide literature that supports the benefits of educators being trauma informed, with Cognitive Behavioral Theory and Gestalt Theory as a guide. Finally, I created a professional development presentation for educators to become aware of …

Professional North American sports leagues are not immune to intense labor disputes between billionaire owners and millionaire athletes. In contrast to its major counterparts in Football and Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the premiere professional basketball league in the world, has cultivated a reputation as being mostly “player-friendly” over the last several years. Aside from the apparent economic gains that have come with improved labor relations, the NBA has been at the forefront of addressing the mental health concerns of its athletes. This issue had been previously ignored or diminished in cultural and professional settings. High-profile players have openly detailed …

Relationship Talk With Partners And Friends During Emerging Adulthood: The Role Of Relationship Satisfaction, Christine So, Katherine L. Fiori, Christina M. Marini, Blakely A. Murphy, James B. Stein
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Research indicates that discussing one’s romantic relationship with one’s partner benefits individual well-being and reduces uncertainty about the future of the relationship. Implications of relationship talk with friends remain less clear, though talking with friends may actually increase uncertainty about the relationship (e.g., by making one’s partner jealous of these friends), particularly for emerging adults. Relationship talk with friends may be especially likely to promote relational uncertainty for couples who are already unsatisfied in their relationships. In this study, we explored whether relationship talk with one’s partner and one’s friends would each be uniquely associated with depressive symptoms and uncertainty …

Analysis Of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation And Endothelial Function Following Intravenous Iron In Chronic Kidney Disease In The Iron And Heart Trial, Xenophon Kassianides, Victoria Allgar, Iain C. Macdougall, Philip A. Kalra, Sunil Bhandari
Peninsula Medical School
AbstractIron deficiency commonly affects patients with chronic kidney disease and has an important burden in disease trajectory and quality of life; nonetheless current guidelines do not advocate treatment of iron-deficiency without anemia in this patient group. Concerns exist regarding the potential effects of intravenous iron on oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial function. As part of a multicenter double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial, we examined the effects of a single dose of intravenous iron vs. placebo on biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial function in non-anemic iron deficient patients (serum ferritin < 100 μg/L and/or transferrin saturation < 20%) with chronic kidney disease (stage 3b-5). Fifty-four individuals were randomized to receive ferric derisomaltose (n = 26) or placebo (n = 28). Ferric derisomaltose was associated with a non-significant decrease in mean F2-isoprostane and no effect on thiobarbituric acid reactive substances when compared to placebo throughout follow up. No effect on inflammatory markers was observed. A modest but statistically significant rise in E-selectin was noted in the intravenous iron group at 1 month and 3 month follow-up (p = 0.030 and p = 0.002 respectively). These results suggest ferric derisomaltose administration in non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease patients who are iron deficient does not induce prolonged oxidative stress or inflammation. Larger trials are required to quantify the benefit of intravenous iron administration in this patient group.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the possible benefits of provider-recorded visit summaries for patient use, the utilization of such recordings has yet to be adopted as standard care in most specialities. The objective of this study was to investigate the perspectives of emergency department (ED) providers regarding the utilization of audio or video recordings during ED patient encounters, particularly during discharge conversations.
METHODS: This study utilized an eight-question survey pooling the opinions of various emergency medicine nurses, advanced practitioners, residents, and physicians within a local Ohio hospital system. Providers from multiple healthcare centers were studied. Study data were collected using an anonymous online …

Influential theories implicate variations in the mechanisms supporting threat learning in the severity of anxiety symptoms. We use computational models of associative learning in conjunction with structural imaging to explicate links among the mechanisms underlying threat learning, their neuroanatomical substrates, and anxiety severity in humans. We recorded skin-conductance data during a threat-learning task from individuals with and without anxiety disorders (N=251; 8-50 years; 116 females). Reinforcement-learning model variants quantified processes hypothesized to relate to anxiety: threat conditioning, threat generalization, safety learning, and threat extinction. We identified the best-fitting models for these processes and tested associations among latent learning parameters, whole-brain …

In The Aftermath Of The Battle Of Olustee: A Beecher's Surprise Visit To Florida, Sarah Whitmer Foster
Florida Historical Quarterly
Isabella Beecher Hooker spent March 12-14, 1864, visiting senior army officers in Jacksonville. The timing was auspicious, given that her visit came just weeks after the only significant Civil War battle in Florida. The Federal defeat at Olustee had occurred on February 20. Moreover, she had access to regimental and brigade commanders through her brother, James C. Beecher, and her Hartford friend and neighbor, Joseph R. Hawley.1 At the end of her visit Isabella wrote to her husband offering observations about the battle and the Federal officer who led Northern troops in this engagement. The source of her information about …

"If It Was Not For You I Would Be Willing To Die:" The Civil War Correspondence Of Michael And Sallie Raysor, Aaron Sheehan-Dean
Florida Historical Quarterly
Like many Floridians before the Civil War, Michael O. Raysor was not a native.2 Born in Colleton District, South Carolina in 1837, he moved to Florida in 1858 at the age of 21. Raysor settled into life in Jefferson County, Florida, relying on the large extended family that moved to the area as well.3 In June 1861, Raysor enlisted in the Jefferson Rifles (Company H) of the 3rd Florida Regiment. Raysor's military service encompassed many experiences common to Confederates. He accompanied Braxton Bragg in his invasion of Kentucky, where he was captured at the battle of Perryville. After being exchanged, …

Workers Of The Sunshine State Unite!: The Florida Socialist Party During The Progressive Era, 1900-1920, R. Steven Griffin
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida, whether under Democratic or Republican political control, has always appeared to most outside observers as a haven for political conservatism. Outward appearances, however, often prove to be quite deceptive. Florida politics during the Progressive Era may be such a case. In 1912, the Socialist presidential candidate, Eugene Debs, garnered more votes in Florida than Theodore Roosevelt or William Howard Taft, and Florida was the only state of the former Confederacy where this minor party finished as high as second place in the total vote. A canvass of Progressive Era voting results reveals the steady growth of Socialist electoral strength …

Leaning On The Everlasting Arms: Virgil Darnell Hawkins's Early Life And Entry Into The Civil Rights Struggle, Larry O. Rivers
Florida Historical Quarterly
By 1987, Florida civil rights hero Virgil Hawkins's earthly journey neared its end. At 80 years of age, the sunset of his life had given him many signs that relief and rest lay just on the horizon: grayer hair, slower reflexes, sharper aches, and ailing health. But still, even in these waning years, peace eluded him. The painful, ongoing irony and contradiction in his life appeared as clear as the black-haired, white female newspaper reporter sitting in his living room, carefully scratching out notes as he shared a story that he had repeated so many times.1

Camp Roosevelt: A Case Study Of The Nya In Florida, Dave Nelson
Florida Historical Quarterly
In April 1940, Life magazine's cover story on "Government and Youth" updated an article the magazine had published on the youth problem in 1936. The cover featured a photograph of Mabel Sealey, an enrollee at Camp Roosevelt, a National Youth Administration (NYA) resident project in Ocala, Florida. The accompanying article, presented the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as boys' work relief, while the NYA provided relief for girls.1 In the gendered language of the narrative and the photographic images, the masculine CCC project accomplished important work such as fire fighting and tree planting, while teaching its enrollees military discipline and job …

The "Jewel" Of The South?: Miami, Florida, And The Naacp's Struggle For Civil Rights In America's Vacation Paradise, Chanelle Rose
Florida Historical Quarterly
The most recent studies on civil rights activism in Florida demystify popular notions of the ostensibly atypical southern state as an aberration from the Deep South.1 However, V.O. Key's 1949 characterization of the "tremendous gap in tempo epitomized in the contrast between a sleepy, rural Old South county of northern Florida and the bustling city of Miami" exemplified the widening gap between the intrastate regions in the era following the Second World War. As Miami Herald reporter Philip Meyer noted, "neither northern nor typically southern, Miami is a kind of sociological time capsule suspended between two worlds."2 Such characterizations as …
