Adoption Communication In The Media, Samantha Schaffer

Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference

Adoption communication is a vital part of developing healthy family relationships in families formed through adoption. The media has recently begun depicting more of the difficulties that adoptees experience. Three key television shows are Charmed, A Million Little Things, and This Is Us, which depict communication about adoption. These television shows offer the opportunity to analyze master narratives, family communication patterns, and information regulation through popular culture. By illustrating the difficulties experienced by adoptees, these shows provide adoptive families with the occasion to begin difficult yet necessary conversations. These television shows not only exemplify adoption communication they also …

In this extraordinary time of multiple, intersecting crises with compounded costs in social, economic, and environmental degradation, calls for transformative change are emerging from all levels – local to global. Consideration is grounded within Pope Francis’ encyclical (teaching letter) Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home. This socio-ecological treatise highlights the damage people are causing to the fabric of the planet, as well as …

Roe V. Wade Under Attack: Choosing Procedural Doctrines Over Fundamental Constitutional Rights, Simona Grossi

ConLawNOW

This Article details the Texas litigation on abortion rights in and out of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2021 and its implications for the future of constitutional rights. The litigation focused primarily on procedural issues like standing and sovereign immunity that prevented the plaintiffs’ claims of violation of fundamental constitutional rights to proceed to their merits. Such procedural doctrines have become a powerful tool in the hands of the Supreme Court used to control social and economic development. Thus procedure, originally conceived as the handmaid of justice, has become one of its main antagonists. This Article argues against such abuses …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

The goal of our Student Leadership Exchange (SLX) project is to spread awareness about racial discrimination and socioeconomic disparities within education. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) that connects to this is Quality Education, or UN SDG number four. In the American education system, factors such as race and socioeconomic status play a large role in creating the disparities that negatively affect students. These gaps in early education are extremely difficult to get out of and may affect a person for the rest of their life.

In our SLX project, we hope to address these disparities. We have …

History Of Discrimination: The Racist Practices Of The Masters Golf Tournament, Joseph Ruggiero Apr 2022

History Of Discrimination: The Racist Practices Of The Masters Golf Tournament, Joseph Ruggiero

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

The Masters golf tournament is one of the most prestigious PGA events of the year. Despite the level of prestige, the name of the tournament has sparked controversy because of the origins from which the name was derived. The name signifies “master” in relation to the “master” of enslaved people. It is clear that the Masters golf tournament needs to change its name. Since the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, situations involving racism have become more sensitive to society. Discrimination against African Americans is starting to be exposed more prevalently, including situations involving pro sports as well. Given …

Surgical Correction Of A Complex Aorto-Mitral Pathology, Kubilay Karabacak, Emre Kubat, Elgin Hacızade, Suat Doğancı, Cengiz Bolcal

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Pseudoaneurysm of mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa is a rare entity related to mostly infective endocarditis and surgical trauma of aortic valve. Its diagnosis may be missed following trans-thoracic echocardiographic assessment. Therefore, further imaging investigation such as trans-esophageal echocardiography and computed tomographic angiography may play a key diagnostic role. Here we present the successful surgical treatment of a 30- year-old male patient referred for surgical treatment of mixed severe calcific aortic valve disease and apparently without additional anatomical abnormalities.

Covid Susceptibility And Severity Correlation With The Ace2 Gene, Natalie Taylor

Thinking Matters Symposium

A wide spectrum of susceptibility and severity of infection has been observed among COVID-19 patients. While some individuals remain unaffected by the Sars-Cov-2 virus, others have contracted the virus multiple times with varying levels of severity. This poster reviews some of the research demonstrating a link between the susceptibility of the Sars-Cov- 2 virus and the severity of infection, and a specific gene called ACE2. The ACE2 gene encodes an angiotensin-converting enzyme that acts as a functional receptor for the spike glycoprotein receptor binding domain of the coronavirus and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses. ACE2 presents numerous amino acid variants …

Conceptualizations Of Love In Social Work: A Naturalistic Inquiry, Galen Perkins Apr 2022

Conceptualizations Of Love In Social Work: A Naturalistic Inquiry, Galen Perkins

Thinking Matters Symposium

Love is recognized as healing, transformative, and emancipatory, and yet, conceptualizations of love are largely absent in social work—a field guided by core principles such as social justice, self-determination, and service. The limited number of studies on love in social work describe love as critical consciousness or a liberatory ethic to be practiced. Primarily participatory in design, these studies speak from the perspective of practitioners. The purpose of this study is to continue inquiring about how love is known among social work practitioners; in particular, we are asking the question, “how do licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) conceptualize love in …

Drivers Of Macroinvertebrate Community Integrity Within Mixed Urban And Agricultural Dominated Mississippi Tributary Watersheds, Matthew R. Straus, Bethany Mabel Lian Schorr, Kevin Geedey, Michael Reisner, Benjamin Ford

Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The “urban stream syndrome” refers to a multitude of impacts caused by urbanization including flashier hydrograph, elevated concentrations of nutrients and contaminants, altered channel morphology and stability, reduced biotic richness, with increased dominance of tolerant species, reduced base flow and increased suspended solids. The drivers of these “symptoms” include impervious surfaces, piping in stormwater drainages, habitat and forest loss, water supply and sewer leaking, and direct alterations to channel morphology and flow. The goal of this study was to assess the integrity of the macroinvertebrate community and determine the most significant drivers of such integrity at the catchment, riparian zone, …

Investigation Of Cotinine Concentration Found In Saliva Of Smokers And Vapers In Demographic Sectors, Seth A. Sims

Honors Theses

A simple and reproducible method for investigation of cotinine and nicotine levels in saliva was developed by utilizing gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) and simple extraction techniques. This method allowed for accurate detection of cotinine in saliva samples collected within a 50-mile radius of Searcy, AR. The observed cotinine levels proportionately depict nicotine levels, which were then compared with participants’ demographics, displaying trends among different communities. This research hopes to provide insight into vaping popularity as well as a reproducible method that future research can utilize.

Practicing Self-Advocacy For Displaced People In The English Language Learner Classroom, Payton Persinger

MA TESOL Collection

This study is comprised of a literature review of best practices for working with displaced people and interviews with teachers of refugees. The author found that self-advocacy is multifaceted and that promoting self-advocacy is a key way to support learners in advocating for themselves and their communities. As borders become less porous, there will be more refugee crises, and more language teachers will be needed. Best practices for teaching languages include seeing students as cultural experts, teaching and encouraging resistance, being a trauma-informed practitioner, teaching legal rights, and making room for students to choose what they learn.

The Women Of Owen Clinic And Their Impact On Rural Mental Health, Mallory Stanley Apr 2022

The Women Of Owen Clinic And Their Impact On Rural Mental Health, Mallory Stanley

Manuscripts

The mid-1900s was a pivotal moment in reforming mental health treatment in American Psychiatry. This movement becomes particularly clear when examining the championing work of two women, Dr. Thelma V. Owen and Dr. M. G. Stemmermann, at a rural mental health facility located in Huntington, WV: Owen Clinic Institute. While mental health stigma was at an extreme high among the general population, many factors aligned to allow for a new era of mental health care, including deinstitutionalization, World War II, and the advocation of professionals in the field. In West Virginia, no two people were more outspoken and active in …
