Increased Risk Of Mental Illness Due To Epigenetic Alteration Of The Nr3c1 Gene After Early Life Adversity., Erin Mccue
Thinking Matters Symposium
Early life adversity (ELA), such as malnutrition, abuse, and economic disparity, is an issue commonly seen in adolescents, a group already facing increased risk for stress-related disorders. This review of current literature reveals that gestational stress exposure, as well as variations in maternal care during postnatal development, cause latent effects on the epigenome, specifically impacting the glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) encoded by the NR3C1 gene. GRs bind to glucocorticoids to regulate the body’s neuroendocrine stress response. However, in those with a history of ELA, the number of GRs is reduced, generating dysregulation within the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Rodent studies are utilized …

'There Is No Cause, There Is No Effect': Experiences At The Intersection Of Transgender And Neurodivergent Identities, Natalie Bornstein
Thinking Matters Symposium
A significant body of clinical research has demonstrated that neurodivergent individuals are more likely than neurotypical individuals to have transgender and/or gender expansive identities (Janssen et al., 2016; Strang et al., 2014). Within this body of research, neurodivergence and transgender identities are commonly mutually pathologized. Existent medico-psychiatric literature has been found to describe neurodivergence and transgender identities as “co-morbidities” and hypothesizes neurodivergence as a “cause” of transgender identity (Shapira & Granek, 2019, p. 506). A small but growing body of clinical, sociological, and theoretical scholarship has demonstrated the importance of non-pathologizing approaches to mental and physical healthcare for this population, …

Working With Interpreters In Refugee Mental Health, Kerstin Kirchner
Thinking Matters Symposium
For refugees, limited English proficiency hinders access to healthcare services. The language barrier significantly affects mental health and represents the most fundamental challenge preventing refugees from accessing mental health services. Previous research focused primarily on the role and impact of interpreters in mental healthcare. The existing literature unequivocally supports interpreters’ unique challenges and dynamics when working with refugees in mental health. We used a questionnaire-based survey to identify the need of interpreters in mental health. Questions were designed as closed-ended questions that would lead to a more appropriate response, are easy to understand and answer, and help obtain measurable data. …

Validity And Reliability Of The Spence And Robbins Workaholism Battery: A Study In Malaysian Employees, Ammar Almustafa, Guek Nee Ke
Psychological Research on Urban Society
This psychometric study aims to contribute to the evolving cross-cultural definition of workaholism by exploring the reliability and validity of using the Workaholism Battery (WorkBAT; Spence & Robbins, 1992) in a sample of 183 full-time white-collar workers in Malaysia. Using data from online surveys, collected from full-time white-collar workers in the private and public sectors, factor analysis was used to indicate factor solutions contributing to the definition of workaholism based on the Spence and Robbins (1992) model of high work involvement, high work drive, and low work enjoyment. The study identified three factors and reassigned the items between them into …

A Netlogo Covid-19 Virus Simulation Model For Determining Better Strategies At Handling A Virus Outbreak, Nate Izewski
Graduate Academic Symposium
The recent outbreak of COVID-19 generated a significant amount of illness and infection for many individuals worldwide. The pandemic also produced many opposing opinions on how to handle the spread of the virus. While some advocated for strict lockdowns, others criticized this method for its potentially severe consequences and proposed a more relaxed approach. My research project involves a NetLogo model that simulates the transmission of COVID-19 to provide insight into optimal strategies at effectively controlling a virus outbreak. I examine the rate of infection based on movement patterns, health status, vaccination status, and mask-wearing status. Using my results, I …

Are The Criteria For The Diagnosis Of Premature Ejaculation Applicable To Gay Men Or Sexual Activities Other Than Penile-Vaginal Intercourse?, Claire Weseman, Candace Roberson B.S.
Graduate Academic Symposium
The criteria for premature ejaculation (PE) have generally been limited to the diagnosis of heterosexual men engaging in penile-vaginal intercourse and therefore the applicability of PE diagnostic criteria to gay men and to activities beyond penile-vaginal intercourse has yet to be explored in depth. Our aim is to compare the prevalence of PE in gay and straight men and to assess whether PE-related diagnostic measures (ejaculatory control, ejaculation latency [EL], and bother/distress) can be applied with confidence to gay men or to men engaging in sexual activities other than penile-vaginal intercourse. Gay and straight participants (n = 3878) were recruited …

Parkersburg Area Economic Outlook: 2022-2026, Connor Kelly, Lauren Moore, Glenn Whited, John Deskins, Brian Lego
Bureau of Business & Economic Research
The Parkersburg Area economy experienced a substantial loss in jobs during COVID-19 recession, as the combination of public health measures and massive negative shock to economic activity globally caused employment in the area to plunge by nearly 8,000 jobs in early-2020. By some measures, the area’s recession was not demonstrably worse than what occurred at the state and national level yet was still unprecedented in terms of how fast these losses happened when compared to previous economic downturns. At the same time, the area has recovered nearly 6,000 jobs over the last six quarters, putting its overall recovery on par …

The Value Of Education: School Policy Decisions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Elika W. Somani
Individually Designed Interdepartmental Major Honors Project
During the COVID-19 pandemic, lacking national U.S. policies, wide variation and conflict over chosen public school policy decisions emerged. What factors and guidelines informed the decision-making process in K-12 public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic and who were the key stakeholders? This study examines three school district types – a large city, medium city, and small-town – across Minnesota as case studies to unpack how policy decisions were made during the pandemic. Stakeholder interviews uncovered that the school decision-making process was a) connected to a district's political opinions, b) made by the superintendent and school board, c) primarily influenced by …

The Musical Rhetoric Of Aretha Franklin And Nina Simone And The Civil Rights Movement, Hannah Hawk
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
Acclaimed artists such as Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone were able to use their music as a way to communicate change during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Through their public platforms they became powerful influencers who were able to spread awareness for social justice and create an image of strong Black womanhood for listeners. By using the Illusion of Life theory, this project examines how the listener is brought into a rhetorical moment that the artist creates through song. Black Feminist Thought allows inclusion of the artists’ life experiences to the analysis of the rhetorical power …

Presently, East Asians and Asian Americans are facing waves of discrimination and challenges over increased incidents of hatred and prejudice due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its origination from China (Balvaneda et al., 2020). The New York Police Department recorded hate crimes against Asians at a rate of 8 times higher in 2020 than in 2019 (Asian American Bar Association of New York & Paul, Weiss, 2021).1 A nonprofit organization, Stop AAPI Hate, reported in May 2021 a total of 6,603 hate incidents targeting Asian Americans nationwide since March 2020 (Jeung et al., 2021).2 The …

Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) is the widespread deposition of thrombin and fibrin in microvascular circulation. It is a condition in which clots form throughout the body leading to blockage of small blood vessels. The pathologic clotting in DIC is due to the consumption of coagulation factors and platelets. Patients can present with complications of bleeding or vascular thrombi. Most common causes of DIC include sepsis, malignancy, pregnancy complications, major trauma, and surgery.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exhibit a distinct and high risk of ischemic stroke with worse post-stroke neurovascular and white matter (WM) prognosis than the non-diabetic population. In the central nervous system, the ATP-binding cassette transporter member A 1 (ABCA1), a reverse cholesterol transporter that efflux cellular cholesterol, plays an important role in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) biogenesis and in maintaining neurovascular stability and WM integrity. Our previous study shows that L-4F, an economical apolipoprotein A member I (ApoA-I) mimetic peptide, has neuroprotective effects via alleviating neurovascular and WM impairments in the brain of db/db-T2DM stroke mice. Structural variants (SVs) are implicated in the etiology of Mendelian diseases but have been systematically underascertained owing to sequencing technology limitations. Long-read sequencing enables comprehensive detection of SVs, but approaches for prioritization of candidate SVs are needed. Structural variant Annotation and analysis (SvAnna) assesses all classes of SVs and their intersection with transcripts and regulatory sequences, relating predicted effects on gene function with clinical phenotype data. SvAnna places 87% of deleterious SVs in the top ten ranks. The interpretable prioritizations offered by SvAnna will facilitate the widespread adoption of long-read sequencing in diagnostic genomics.
