Epigenetics And Cancer: Mechanisms, Diagnostics, And Treatment, Sophie Kopyar Apr 2022

Epigenetics And Cancer: Mechanisms, Diagnostics, And Treatment, Sophie Kopyar

D.U.Quark

Epigenetics connects the divide between genotype and phenotype without completely altering the genome. Modifications to certain genes can affect cell functions and produce diseased phenotypes, such as cancer. In some forms of cancer, epigenetic changes cause the cell to irregularly reproduce, avoid immunological responses, and operate under unsuitable conditions. This review explores the epigenetic changes that can occur to produce an oxygen deficient, hypoxically functioning environment that increases cancer vitality. More specifically, this review will focus on epigenetic alterations to HIF and p53 genes and briefly cover other genes that can be affected in cancerous cells. This review found there …

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

From an early age, I was exposed to the detrimental effects cancer can have on individuals as well as their families. One after another, I experienced the passing of family and friends. The heartbreak that I endured during these times inspired me to push for more advocacy and change in the cancer world. Through my design work, I am exploring the human connection, how humans interact with each other, and how art and design can influence the way we see challenging situations. This connection is explored in my senior BFA show, driven by my passion for fundraising and advocacy in …

Invisible, Yet Criminal: Best Practices For Supporting Student Sex Workers Throughout Higher Education, Anthony Alan Ruegsegger

Masters Projects

While it is not new information that college students may engage in sex work throughout their academic careers, it still remains a somewhat taboo topic throughout academia and higher education in the United States. Student sex workers face institutional and societal barriers typically associated with minoritized identities, and post-secondary institutions rarely have resources in place to support these students. This project aims to help bridge this gap by utilizing the polymorphous paradigm and an anti-savior lens to create a list of best practices for higher education faculty, staff, and administrators to better support students that are engaging in sex work. …

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, 220,000 New Mexicans were diagnosed with diabetes in 2017 and diabetes was the 6th leading cause of death in the state. Overall, Santa Fe County fairs above average in terms of managing diabetes among its population. Diabetes-related deaths are lower in Santa Fe County compared to the state’s average with 16.9 and 26.0 deaths per 100,000 people, respectively. However, on closer inspection, certain sections of Santa Fe County are disproportionately underrepresented within these generally “positive” numbers. One such community is Agua Fria Village on the south side of the city of Santa …

Analyzing On-Time-Delivery Of An E-Commerce Distributor, Mark Lorenz, Jacob Janssen, Garrett Wolan, Nicholas Jimenez

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been massive delays in the global supply chain due to material and labor shortages. While these issues were boosted during the pandemic, it does lead to the question of could this have been avoided based on supply chain information pre-pandemic? Our research examines the on time delivery of goods of a sporting goods company to see if there are any correlations between the type of product, shipping method, regional location, and delivery status. Analyzing supply chain data allows corporations to better understand how their shipping methods are affecting their customer base which can lead …

Genomic profiles of cancer cells provide valuable information on genetic alterations in cancer. Several recent studies employed these data to predict the response of cancer cell lines to drug treatment. Nonetheless, due to the multifactorial phenotypes and intricate mechanisms of cancer, the accurate prediction of the effect of pharmacotherapy on a specific cell line based on the genetic information alone is problematic. Emphasizing on the system-level complexity of cancer, we devised a procedure to integrate multiple heterogeneous data, including biological networks, genomics, inhibitor profiling, and gene-disease associations, into a unified graph structure. In order to construct compact, yet information-rich cancer-specific …

Dnp Final Report: Educating Emergency Department Observation Unit Providers On Use Of The Heart Score, Candice J. Chinn

DNP Final Reports

Eight to ten million patients visit the emergency department (ED) with chest pain (CP) annually (Smulowitz et al., 2017). Additional testing in the low-risk population is not beneficial and leads to increased mortality (Smulowitz et al., 2017). The HEART (History, ECG, Age, Risk Factors, Troponin) score risk stratification tool assists with the identification of a patient’s 30-day risk for a major adverse cardiac event (MACE; Ras et al., 2017). Lack of education on use of the HEART score leads to incorrect use of the tool and inappropriate management of patients with CP. The aim of this quality improvement project is …

Strengthening Executive Function And Self-Regulation In Early Childhood Classroom, Molly Grosvenor Apr 2022

Strengthening Executive Function And Self-Regulation In Early Childhood Classroom, Molly Grosvenor

Masters Projects

Executive function (EF) is an umbrella term used to describe the group of higher order thinking and regulatory processes. They are the brain functions that enable working memory, inhibitory control, and attentional or mental flexibility and there are many factors that impact the early development. Research confirms that EF skills are malleable and can be improved through preschool experiences. Early support and intervention are especially important for children who enter school with poorer executive function skills and are at risk because of social, economic, or other adverse childhood experiences. This project aims to provide a workshop and training handbook for …
