Little research has been done exploring the significance of affinity group membership in the profession of music therapy. In this study, 48 music therapy students and professionals who identified as a part of an affinity group connected to their marginalized identities were surveyed, answering open- and closed-ended questions related to their experiences of a sense of belongingness, acculturative stress, and burnout in professional environments. Quantitative data were analyzed using cross-tabulation descriptive statistics through Google Forms and qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The quantitative data highlighted how affinity group membership plays a significant role in the sense of belongingness …

A Case Study Examining High-Achieving Black And Latinx Students’ Reasons For Using Or Not Using Academic Support Services, Nafeeza Uddin-Schmidt May 2022

A Case Study Examining High-Achieving Black And Latinx Students’ Reasons For Using Or Not Using Academic Support Services, Nafeeza Uddin-Schmidt

Theses & Dissertations

Black and Latinx students are completing college at lower rates compared to White and Asian students. Many studies have documented the role of academic support services in helping students successfully complete college. Yet, many of the support services are built into students’ course schedules during freshman year to help transition to college. During the sophomore year, many of those supports are no longer built in, and students must seek them out themselves. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the reasons high-achieving Black and Latinx students opt in or opt out of using academic support services …

Relationships Of Secondary Traumatic Stress And Self-Efficacy Among Obstetric Nurses Caring For Patients And Families With Perinatal Loss, Jennifer Baierlein May 2022

Relationships Of Secondary Traumatic Stress And Self-Efficacy Among Obstetric Nurses Caring For Patients And Families With Perinatal Loss, Jennifer Baierlein

Theses & Dissertations

Background

The labor and delivery unit is a place where new life begins, and families are made. Perinatal loss is a traumatic event for families and those that provide care to expectant families. In providing care to patients and families experiencing perinatal loss, nurses are at risk for secondary traumatic stress, which could be harmful to their physical and emotional state leading to compassion fatigue and burnout. Perinatal loss represents a stressful and emotionally demanding event for healthcare professionals, as they must deal with the additional burden of managing their own emotions while caring for the patients. Self-efficacy is a …

Watch Your Flavors: Augmenting People's Flavor Perceptions And Associated Emotions Based On Videos Watched While Eating, Meetha Nesam James, Nimesha Ranasinghe, Anthony Tang, Lora Oehlberg

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

People engage in different activities while eating alone, such as watching television or scrolling through social media on their phones. However, the impacts of these visual contents on human cognitive processes, particularly related to flavor perception and its attributes, are still not thoroughly explored. This paper presents a user study to evaluate the influence of six different types of video content (including nature, cooking, and a new food video genre known as mukbang) on people’s flavor perceptions in terms of taste sensations, liking, and emotions while eating plain white rice. Our findings revealed that the participants’ flavor perceptions are augmented …

Who Are The 'Silent Spreaders'?: Contact Tracing In Spatio-Temporal Memory Models, Yue Hu, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chai Quek, Quanjun Yin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The COVID-19 epidemic has swept the world for over two years. However, a large number of infectious asymptomatic COVID-19 cases (ACCs) are still making the breaking up of the transmission chains very difficult. Efforts by epidemiological researchers in many countries have thrown light on the clinical features of ACCs, but there is still a lack of practical approaches to detect ACCs so as to help contain the pandemic. To address the issue of ACCs, this paper presents a neural network model called Spatio-Temporal Episodic Memory for COVID-19 (STEM-COVID) to identify ACCs from contact tracing data. Based on the fusion Adaptive …

Coping Strategies Mediate The Relation Between Executive Functions And Life Satisfaction In Middle And Late Adulthood: A Structural Equational Analysis, Hui Si Oh, Hwajin Yang May 2022

Coping Strategies Mediate The Relation Between Executive Functions And Life Satisfaction In Middle And Late Adulthood: A Structural Equational Analysis, Hui Si Oh, Hwajin Yang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent studies have suggested that executive functions (EF) predict life satisfaction for older adults. However, the mechanism is not known. By analyzing a sample (N = 3,287, ages 32- 84 years) from the Midlife Development in the United States 2, we examined the mediational role of coping strategies in the relation between EF and life satisfaction. Both active coping and behavioral disengagement mediated the relation between EF and life satisfaction, and age significantly moderated the mediational pathways. Specifically, the positive effect of EF on active coping was more pronounced in middle-aged and older adults than in young adults. However, the …

Evidence exists that exposure to weather hazards, particularly in cities subject to heat island and climate change impacts, strongly affects individuals’ physical and mental health. Personal exposure to and sentiments about warm conditions can currently be expressed on social media, and recent research noted that the geotagged, time-stamped, and accessible social media databases can potentially be indicative of the public mood and health for a region. This study attempts to understand the relationships between weather and social media sentiments via Twitter and weather data from 2012 to 2019 for two cities in hot climates: Singapore and Phoenix, Arizona. We first …

Sunshine On My Shoulders Makes Me Happy... Especially If I’M Less Intelligent: How Sunlight And Intelligence Affect Happiness In Modern Society, Satoshi Kanazawa, Norman P. Li, Jose C. Yong May 2022

Sunshine On My Shoulders Makes Me Happy... Especially If I’M Less Intelligent: How Sunlight And Intelligence Affect Happiness In Modern Society, Satoshi Kanazawa, Norman P. Li, Jose C. Yong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The savanna theory of happiness proposes that, due to evolutionary constraints on the human brain, situations and circumstances that would have increased our ancestors’ happiness may still increase our happiness today, and those that would have decreased their happiness then may still decrease ours today. It further proposes that, because general intelligence evolved to solve evolutionarily novel problems, this tendency may be stronger among less intelligent individuals. Because humans are a diurnal species that cannot see in the dark, darkness always represented danger to our ancestors and may still decrease our happiness today. Consistent with this prediction, the analysis of …

A Global Experiment On Motivating Social Distancing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nicole Legate, Thuy-Vy Nguyen, Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-country, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. Results partially supported experimental hypotheses in that the controlling message increased controlled motivation (a poorly internalized form of motivation relying on shame, guilt, and fear of social consequences) relative to no message. …

Tatl: Task Agnostic Transfer Learning For Skin Attributes Detection, Duy M.H. Nguyen, Thu T. Nguyen, Huong Vu, Hong Quang Pham, Manh-Duy Nguyen, Binh T. Nguyen, Daniel Sonntag

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing skin attributes detection methods usually initialize with a pre-trained Imagenet network and then fine-tune on a medical target task. However, we argue that such approaches are suboptimal because medical datasets are largely different from ImageNet and often contain limited training samples. In this work, we propose Task Agnostic Transfer Learning (TATL), a novel framework motivated by dermatologists’ behaviors in the skincare context. TATL learns an attribute-agnostic segmenter that detects lesion skin regions and then transfers this knowledge to a set of attribute-specific classifiers to detect each particular attribute. Since TATL’s attribute-agnostic segmenter only detects skin attribute regions, it enjoys …

Water Resources Science and Technology Theses and Graduate Research Reports (Archived)

Along transboundary river borders in North and Central America social-political factors such as conservation, militarization, and migration impact natural resources leaving the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala at risk of ecological decline due to the changing climate. I present a qualitative case study comparing the social-political factors and their impact on natural resources in the Usumacinta River Basin (URB) and Rio Grande River Basin (RGRB). A comprehensive evaluation of social-political factors is performed starting from the 19th century to the current era. I contribute to the field of environmental sociology by extending Laako and Kauffer’s (2022) work on eco-frontiers of …

Aflatoxin In Dairy Cattle Water Troughs, Julie A. Scott May 2022

Aflatoxin In Dairy Cattle Water Troughs, Julie A. Scott

Water Resources Science and Technology Theses and Graduate Research Reports (Archived)

One of the most commonly found mycotoxins, aflatoxin, has been an emerging concern for the milk and dairy industry and a continued concern for the human food supply and cattle feed industry. There is a possibility of this carcinogenic mycotoxin being found in water and several studies have found them in water storage tanks, treated wastewater systems, and even in bottled water. With the potential presence in water, this study explores the possibility of aflatoxin in water troughs found on dairy farms which could be one of the exposures to cattle linked to causing aflatoxin in milk. Trough water samples …

Energy Balances, Thermal Performance, And Heat Stress: Disentangling Occupant Behaviour And Weather Influences In A Dutch Net-Zero Energy Neighborhood, Hussain Kazmi, Merel Keijsers, Fahad Mehmood, Clayton Miller May 2022

Energy Balances, Thermal Performance, And Heat Stress: Disentangling Occupant Behaviour And Weather Influences In A Dutch Net-Zero Energy Neighborhood, Hussain Kazmi, Merel Keijsers, Fahad Mehmood, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Decarbonizing the building stock is a central component of global climate change mitigation efforts. In practice, this decarbonization can be achieved by a variety of different measures, including improvements in building energy efficiency, electrification of energy demand to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and installation of distributed (renewable) generation in conjunction with flexible storage. However, these large-scale, often disruptive changes to the built environment also raise a number of concerns, such as loss of occupant comfort exacerbated by climate change, and introduction of additional stressors on the distribution grid. In this paper, we demonstrate several conclusions using detailed sub-hourly data …

Background: Posttherapy measurable residual disease (MRD) positivity in core binding factor acute myeloid leukemia (CBF-AML) is associated with shorter relapse-free survival (RFS). Elimination of MRD measured via quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRTPCR) for disease specific transcripts can potentially lead to better outcomes in CBF-AML.

Methods: We prospectively monitored the MRD using qRTPCR and flow cytometry on bone marrow samples in patients with newly diagnosed CBF-AML who received decitabine (DAC) maintenance therapy after fludarabine/cytarabine/G-CSF (FLAG)-based induction/consolidation regimen. Negative qRTPCR (CMR) was defined as fusion transcript <0.01%.

Results: Thirty-one patients with CBF-AML including 14 with t(8;21) and 17 with inv(16) received …

Differential Ets1 Binding To T:G Mismatches Within A Cpg Dinucleotide Contributes To C-To-T Somatic Mutation Rate Of The Idh2 Hotspot At Codon Arg140, Jie Yang, Esha Gupta, John R Horton, Robert M Blumenthal, Xing Zhang, Xiaodong Cheng

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cytosine to thymine (C>T) somatic mutation is highly enriched in certain types of cancer, and most commonly occurs via deamination of a 5-methylcytosine (5mC) to thymine, in the context of a CpG dinucleotide. In theory, deamination should occur at equal rates to both 5mC nucleotides on opposite strands. In most cases, the resulting T:G or G:T mismatch can be repaired by thymine DNA glycosylase activities. However, while some hotspot-associated CpG mutations have approximately equal numbers of mutations that resulted either from C>T or G>A in a CpG dinucleotide, many showed strand bias, being skewed toward C>T …

More Than A Meme: The Dunning-Kruger Effect As An Opportunity For Positive Change In Nursing Education, Cynthia Sherraden Bradley, Kristina Dreifuerst, Brandon Kyle Johnson, Ann Loomis May 2022

More Than A Meme: The Dunning-Kruger Effect As An Opportunity For Positive Change In Nursing Education, Cynthia Sherraden Bradley, Kristina Dreifuerst, Brandon Kyle Johnson, Ann Loomis

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The Dunning–Kruger Effect (DKE) describes the cognitive bias in which novices tend to overestimate performance or competence while experts tend to underestimate. Those who are lacking in competence do not have the skills to accurately recognize deficient performance. Subjective assessment is used widely in simulation learning and in nursing curricula, yet often without expert feedback and reflective discussions, which can result in mistakes being overlooked and encoded, which could subsequently result in clinical errors. The prevalence of DKE should not be interpreted solely as a deprecation of the use of subjective measures, but rather as an indicator of the need …

The Texas Heartbeat Act And Patriarchal Power: The Role Of Reproduction In The Social, Cultural, And Political Subordination Of Women, Grace Murphy May 2022

The Texas Heartbeat Act And Patriarchal Power: The Role Of Reproduction In The Social, Cultural, And Political Subordination Of Women, Grace Murphy

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The Texas Heartbeat Act, enacted on September 1, 2021 imposes a near-total ban on abortions after a six week gestation period, with the exception of instances where the termination of a pregnancy is needed to save the pregnant individual. This bill, which does not impact the mostly cis-men who legislated it, has many negative implications for women and people with uteruses in Texas and across the nation. Due to the social context of women’s subordination within patriarchal culture, and the historical context of limiting reproductive rights as a means of maintaining the political power imbalance, it is important to critically …

The Carrot Vs. The Stick: A Comparative Analysis Of Secondary Sanctions Vs. Positive Inducements In Gaining European Support For A U.S.-Led Sanction Regime, Andy Gomez

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The United States has a history of imposing its will on other countries via aggressive sanction regimes. In many of those regimes, U.S. policymakers note that support from European partner states is paramount to the regime's success. Over the past 20 years, the U.S. and its European partner state's interests have had relatively aligned, fostering cooperation and implementation of like-minded policies against target states. The end of paralleled interests left policymakers with a conundrum, which stemmed the research question of this study. What circumstances determine whether secondary sanctions or positive inducements are more effective in gaining European support for a …
