Evaluation Of The Effect Of Benzalkonium Chloride On Nitrification For Application In Rendering Wastewater, Mrinal Rama Thulasiram May 2022

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Benzalkonium Chloride On Nitrification For Application In Rendering Wastewater, Mrinal Rama Thulasiram

All Theses

Rendering plant wastewater is generally characterized by high ammonia concentration owing to the usage of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) as disinfectants in the plant. The high ammonia concentration needs to be treated and converted into harmless nitrate before being discharged into water bodies. Nitrification is a standard process carried out to facilitate ammonia removal, but the high QAC concentrations in these wastewaters are known to inhibit the nitrification process. The two-staged nitrification process is carried out by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB), collectively called nitrifiers. The most commonly found AOB and NOB in wastewater systems are …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Objective: In the Phase 3 VELIA trial (NCT02470585), PARP inhibitor (PARPi) veliparib was combined with first-line chemotherapy and continued as maintenance for patients with ovarian carcinoma enrolled regardless of chemotherapy response or biomarker status. Here, we report exploratory analyses of the impact of homologous recombination deficient (HRD) or proficient (HRP) status on progression-free survival (PFS) and objective response rates during chemotherapy.

Methods: Women with Stage III-IV ovarian carcinoma were randomized to veliparib-throughout, veliparib-combination-only, or placebo. Stratification factors included timing of surgery and germline BRCA mutation status. HRD status was dichotomized at genomic instability score 33. During combination therapy, …

Early definitions of conservation focused largely on the end goals of protection or restoration of nature, and the various disciplinary domains that contribute to these ends. Conservation science and practice has evolved beyond being focused on just issues of scarcity and biodiversity decline. To better recognize the inherent links between human behaviour and conservation, “success” in conservation is now being defined in terms that include human rights and needs. We also know that who engages in conservation, and how, dictates the likelihood that conservation science will be embraced and applied to yield conservation gains. Here we present ideas for reconceptualizing …

Human milk contains large amounts of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) and their microRNA cargos, whereas infant formulas contain only trace amounts of sEVs and microRNAs. We assessed the transport of sEVs across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and sEV accumulation in distinct regions of the brain in brain endothelial cells and suckling mice. We further assessed sEV-dependent gene expression profiles and effects on the dendritic complexity of hippocampal granule cells and phenotypes of EV depletion in neonate, juvenile and adult mice. The transfer of sEVs across the BBB was assessed by using fluorophore-labeled bovine sEVs in brain endothelial bEnd.3 monolayers and …

Taking Health-Risks As A Short-Term Mating Strategy, Alvin Jun Jie Wong May 2022

Taking Health-Risks As A Short-Term Mating Strategy, Alvin Jun Jie Wong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Diseases pose a recurring, and often indiscriminate threat to the health of individuals. However, there exists a wide range of behavioral responses between individuals when it comes to taking health precautions or undertaking risks in response to this perennial threat, with some responses seeming maladaptive to an individual’s survival. The present study adopts the lens of evolutionary psychology and suggests that taking health risks represent a short-term mating strategy in men, which potentially trades survival for reproductive fitness. Taking health risks is hypothesized to be an honest signal of both good genes and a strong physiological immune system, both of …

Sorry, Locals Only: An Experimental Investigation Of The Affective, Behavioural, And Cognitive Consequences Of National Identity Denial, Nadyanna Binte Mohamed Majeed May 2022

Sorry, Locals Only: An Experimental Investigation Of The Affective, Behavioural, And Cognitive Consequences Of National Identity Denial, Nadyanna Binte Mohamed Majeed

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Existing literature shows that experiences of identity denial and questioning (IDQ) present two major consequences for racial minority groups: increased negative affect and behaviours to reassert one’s identity. The current thesis addresses two limitations in this literature—concerns about generalisability to non-US contexts, and potential consequences for cognitive functioning—by examining IDQ effects on individuals from distinct racial groups in Singapore. Through a correlational survey, Study 1 provided evidence for the incidence of IDQ in Singapore across the three racial groups, although IDQ reports were generally higher among racial minority groups (i.e., Malay and Indian) than the racial majority group (i.e., Chinese). …

I'M Special But A.I. Doesn't Get It, Huei Huei Laurel Teo May 2022

I'M Special But A.I. Doesn't Get It, Huei Huei Laurel Teo

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

A growing body of management research on artificial intelligence (AI) has consistently shown that people innately distrust decisions made by AI and find such decision processes simply less fair compared to decisions made by humans. My dissertation adopts a different perspective to propose that aside from fairness concerns, AI decision methods trigger perceptions in people that their individual uniqueness has not be adequately considered and this has negative consequences for their psychological or subjective well-being.

By combining theories of uniqueness, individuality, power, and well-being, I develop five studies to provide empirical evidence that aversion to AI-mediated decisions also operates through …

Harry Potter: The Power Of Fans, Rachel Roscoe '22

Honor Scholar Theses

In order to begin to unpack the question of why do so many people connect with and are drawn to the world of Harry Potter, I thought it would be important to analyze certain themes that are present in each of the books of this series. However, because there are seven, I will be focusing my analysis on three. The books that I chose from the series are the first one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the fifth one, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and the seventh one, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. These particular …

A Dangerous Pursuit Of Safety: The Value Of Freedom Of Expression And The Folly Of Trading It Away, Nina Katarina Štular '22 May 2022

A Dangerous Pursuit Of Safety: The Value Of Freedom Of Expression And The Folly Of Trading It Away, Nina Katarina Štular '22

Honor Scholar Theses

Freedom of expression has always been weighed against other values. Like all freedoms, it brings with it a degree of risk that it will be misused to do ill. In the work ahead, I hope to offer a reminder of the value of free expression and a warning against the folly of over-restricting it. Those in favor of censoring and regulating expression too often feign to act as protectors of the much desired public or community safety. What censorship really produces, however, is at best a mere illusion of safety. Only an environment in which all ideas, no matter how …

Property Blockchains Have Failed To Realize Their Promise, Alexander Walton '22 May 2022

Property Blockchains Have Failed To Realize Their Promise, Alexander Walton '22

Honor Scholar Theses

We analyze the introduction of blockchain technology in the U.S. home sales market. The introduction of blockchain technology into the real estate industry has failed to meet high expectations to streamline operations and reduce costs. Required legal changes in the management of property deeds, high investment costs and unproven technology met resistance in a fragmented industry with many players, some holding monopoly control. Many parties in the complex chain of real estate transactions have resisted the natural Schumpeterian wave of creative destruction which, at the macro level, should bring huge savings. At the micro level, title insurers have the most …

Pain Is Personal: Understanding Pain Relativity And The Importance Of The Biopsychosocial Model, Riley Kathleen Magoon '22 May 2022

Pain Is Personal: Understanding Pain Relativity And The Importance Of The Biopsychosocial Model, Riley Kathleen Magoon '22

Honor Scholar Theses

Pain is undoubtedly a universal concept; however, the way in which one experiences pain is vastly different depending on the individual. These variations are due to pain reflecting one’s identity which encompasses expansive factors including age, sex, ethnicity, coping mechanisms, and past experiences. Because pain is multidimensional, healthcare providers need to integrate a method that treat patients comprehensively. The biopsychosocial approach prioritizes extensive assessment and treatment as well as consistent communication between patient and provider. For healthcare to implement more effective and empathetic care, the biopsychosocial model needs to be integrated in more fields of medicine. This implementation begins with …

The Simulated Life: A Psychological And Philosophical Examination Of Contemporary Social Media Use Of Adolescents, Lauren T. Lamore '22

Honor Scholar Theses

Suppose you were born 50 years ago. You may not have encountered a screen for several years. Suppose you were born today. You would likely encounter a screen instantly. Unlike 50 years ago, adolescents are exposed to screens and social media quickly and frequently. For those born today, it can be difficult to imagine a world without social media, smartphones, and the internet.

Recently, China limited the amount of time adolescents under the age of 18 can spend playing video games. Bans and limitations like this may sound strange to a western audience, but many people are worried about the …

The Decline Of Mental Health: Pandemic Effects In School-Aged Children Katherine Lenger Depauw University Honor Scholar Program Class Of 2022 Rebecca Schindler,, Katherine Lenger '22

Honor Scholar Theses

This research project examines the mental health impact of Covid-19 on children in primary school. When I first began this research project, there were not many reports on children’s mental health in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic. There were already published studies about adult mental health, college students, and even teenagers, but not much about school-aged children. That is what prompted this study. Since I have begun my research, there have been a few more reports published, including some by the US Department of Education, that have drawn more attention to the current lack of sources available for younger children. …

Furthering Philosophy For The Future: An Exploration Of The Benefits Of High School Philosophy Education And The Barriers It Faces, Alexander Spencer '22

Honor Scholar Theses

In this paper, I will present a picture of how philosophy education should be integrated into American high schools, I will build a case for the benefits of this integration, and I will respond to some challenges to the process of bringing philosophy into the classroom. I hope to show that expanding philosophy education and encouraging critical thinking is important. American high schools are in need of new methods of instruction in this era of misinformation and fruitless political discourse. I hope to show that philosophy education is one tool in the project of improving education, and thus society in …

Teaching Old Calipers New Tricks: Using Craniometrics For Ancestry Admixture Estimation Via Fuzzy Math, Kristi Carnahan

Master's Theses

Cranial measurements have been a cornerstone of physical anthropology since its formation as a discipline in the early 1900s. However, most other ancestry determination methods come with a significant epistemological issue: they differentiate individuals into discrete categories without accounting for the issue of admixture. Advances in data mining and analysis techniques can now be used to help resolve this issue through soft computing, also known as “fuzzy math”. This type of advanced computational math requires specialized knowledge in computer programming, statistics, and data analysis techniques unless one is using computer programs specially designed to run these analyses.
