Computational Design Of Β-Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Ph-Specific Binding, Nayiri Alexander, Makena Augenstein, Matthew Gartner
Computational Design Of Β-Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Ph-Specific Binding, Nayiri Alexander, Makena Augenstein, Matthew Gartner
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The opioid epidemic impacted over 12 million Americans in 2019. Although they are effective pain-relieving medications, they carry addictive and dangerous side effects. Opioids, like morphine, bind non-selectively in both central and peripheral tissues; however, dangerous side effects result from central activation. Inflamed conditions of injured tissues have a lower pH (pH=6-6.5) environment than healthy central tissue (pH=7.4). We aim to design a morphine derivative that binds selectively within inflamed tissue using computationally-based molecular extension and dissection techniques. Binding to the mu-opioid receptor (MOR) is dependent on protonation of the biochemically active amine group of morphine. Fluorination of a carbon …
Developmental Kindergarten Classroom Intervention For Spatial Relational Terms, Maggie Eising, Courtney Karasinski
Developmental Kindergarten Classroom Intervention For Spatial Relational Terms, Maggie Eising, Courtney Karasinski
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Purpose
Relational ability is a key attribute of language. Knowledge of relational terms, including spatial terms, can facilitate development of relational ability. Acquisition of spatial terms can be challenging and necessitates experience and input due to the abstractness of the concepts. Service delivery models for school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are changing from traditional “pull-out” therapy to intervention in the classroom. Response to Intervention (RtI) and multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) frameworks have expanded SLPs’ roles to working with all children at-risk for academic difficulties.
Methods
Given the importance of spatial terms, and the changing roles and service delivery models for …

Visions in Leisure and Business
COVID-19 has had an impact on both consumers and businesses. It has shifted consumer preferences to enjoy nature more and be more aware of environmental issues than ever before. Many businesses suffered during the pandemic, but some thrived as consumer lifestyles and needs changed. This article looks at changes in the market and consumer behavior during the COVID-19 crisis as well as consumer and business trends following the epidemic. It primarily focuses on consumer positivity and sustainability, as well as a business emphasis on innovation, human capital, personalized consumer experience, and the importance of positivity, inclusivity, and diversity.
The Impact Of Fictional Characters On Political Beliefs: A Reception Analysis Of Arrow S5e13, Eastin Kandt
The Impact Of Fictional Characters On Political Beliefs: A Reception Analysis Of Arrow S5e13, Eastin Kandt
Honors College
Story has a strong power to influence, and in America’s current polarized climate, it is important to understand how it can influence politics. In Arrow S5E13, there are characters representing every side of the gun control debate in the wake of a mass shooting at city hall. This study uses interpretive communities theory to analyze two focus groups’ responses to this episode. The focus groups were composed solely of nine college students, six female and three male in total. The results determine that (1) political moderates appreciate the fair fictional representation of multiple political perspectives in fiction, (2) members of …
A Good Tax System: An Analytical Approach Of United States Taxation, Elijah Bruce Biedinger
A Good Tax System: An Analytical Approach Of United States Taxation, Elijah Bruce Biedinger
Honors College
This paper is an attempt to look at the American tax code in a different way. Rather than analyzing the tax on economic impacts, or how it effects the rich or poor, it sets a definition of “good tax” and constantly puts the American tax code under the microscope to determine if it is a good tax or not. For simplicity the paper only looks at personal taxes on the federal level which includes: estate, excise, gift, income, and payroll tax. After a summery and analysis of each tax is completed on an individual level, this paper looks at the …

By using the following three novels - The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys, Dear Martin by Nic Stone, and Turtles All the Way Down by John Green - intertwined with literary theories and pre-established research regarding the use of literature to facilitate discussion, this paper intends to show howYoung Adult literature can help readers - teens and adults alike - to understand the weight of such …
A Study To Investigate The Relationship Between Relationship Theories, Dependency, And Self-Esteem, Peyton Himango
A Study To Investigate The Relationship Between Relationship Theories, Dependency, And Self-Esteem, Peyton Himango
Honors College
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between relationship theories, dependency, and self-esteem. A Google form was sent through social media, peers, and family connections to survey individual’s responses to the Relationship Theories Questionnaire, Spouse-Specific Dependency Scale, and the Rosenburg Self-Esteem Scale. A total of 130 participants (mostly female, Caucasian, and Christian) responded to the survey. I predicted that relationship theories would positively correlate with dependency and negatively correlate with self-esteem. A high score on the Relationship Theories Questionnaire indicates a destiny theory of love (belief in having a soulmate or determined by destiny), while a low …

Business Faculty Articles and Research
Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, as we confronted questions about social distancing, masking wearing, and vaccines, public safety experts warned that the consequences of a misinformed population would be particularly dire due to the serious nature of the threat and necessity of severe collective action to keep the population safe. Thus, the media and the political elites (e.g., President of the United States) who possess the power to set the information agenda around COVID-19 bear a huge responsibility for the general welfare. Through automated text analysis of complete transcripts of national cable, network, and local news, we explore their narratives surrounding …

The Control Strategies Of Brominated Organic Disinfection By-Products: Adsorption With Pre-Chlorination And Photodegradation, Cagri Utku Erdem
All Dissertations
Increasing water pollution, scarcity, and seasonal events force water treatment plants to improve existing treatment techniques and/or implement new methods to enhance drinking water treatment and comply with disinfection by-product (DBP) regulations. A limited number of studies examine the pre-chlorination prior to activated carbon (AC) adsorption for the removal of DBP precursors, and there are no comprehensive and representative treatment conditions in current literature. Although many studies investigated photodegradation of individual DBPs by low pressure ultraviolet (UV254) light, there is still lack of information and limited understanding of photodegradation of total organic halogens and practical implications of UV …

Endocrinology Meeting Abstracts
Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection has led to multiple endocrinopathies. We present a case of panhypopituitarism induced by COVID -19 infection.
Case Description: 76 yo male with history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and 1.5 cm stable, nonfunctioning, pituitary macroadenoma diagnosed in 2017 had multiple admissions for altered mental status and hyponatremia following COVID-19 infection in April 2020. Workup revealed low free T4 0.60 ng/dL (0.8-1.8), low random cortisol 1.8 mcg/dL(2.9-19.4), high prolactin 33.5 ng/mL (2-18), low total testosterone < 10 ng/dl (175-781), SHBG 32.7 nmol/L (13.3-89.5), and low gonadotropins. While hospitalized, he was diagnosed with pan-hypopituitarism and started on glucocorticoids and levothyroxine. Repeat MRI pituitary done after discharge, documented stability of the macroadenoma without hemorrhage. To date, the patient remains on glucocorticoid replacement and thyroid hormone replacement in stable state.
Discussion: Hypopituitarism from any etiology has an incidence of 4.2 per 100,000. Hormone replacement therapy remains the mainstay of treatment. …

Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations
To assess airborne pathogen infection risk, concentrations of interior carbon dioxide and changes in relative humidity serve as proxies for human respiration products. Yanes and Yapp, 2010, demonstrated that interior air carbon dioxide concentrations and 13C/12C ratios display a two-component mixing relationship between respiration carbon dioxide which is highly concentrated (>100x atmospheric) in respiration air CO2 at >40,000 ppm compared with ambient air (~410 ppm). In the absence of combustion carbon dioxide, the concentration of carbon dioxide, in an interior space, depends on the rate of respiration CO2 addition relative to the amount of …

Rationale: Delayed antibiotic therapy is associated with increased mortality in patients hospitalized with infection. The decision toinitiate therapy in patients with suspected infection is influenced by a variety of information, such as vital signs, and laboratoryresults. Identifying different patterns of events that lead to initiation is necessary to discover factors that could serve as targets forinterventions to expedite this process. We aimed to identify the most common sequences of events that precede antibioticordering and to quantify the time intervals between each event that contribute to antibiotic delays. Methods: This was aretrospective study of adult patients hospitalized at 4 community hospitals …

Making Aid Work: Assessing The Impact Of Regional Similarities On State Development Through A Transaction Costs Approach, Sophia Corinne Wozniak
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This research seeks to discern the extent to which similarities between states involved in bilateral aid transfers impact the effectiveness of aid in catalyzing human development within the recipient state. Essentially, in this study I intend to understand if recipient states respond more positively to assistance when the donor state bears similar characteristics to the recipient. As a myriad of new donors emerge into the donor discussion, they bring with them unique cultural contexts, languages, religions, colonial heritages, geographic locations, and many other aspects which may distinguish them from the existing pool of donors.

Addressing Imposter Syndrome In First-Year College Students, Camille Mendoza
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Some first-year students may have feelings of Imposter Syndrome, where they feel self-doubt and fear that they are not qualified and worthy enough. Students experiencing Imposter Syndrome may not recognize their capabilities and may suffer from low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression. Given the potential impact of Imposter Syndrome on first-year students, colleges should provide training to those leaders on campus who work directly with first-year students so that Imposter Syndrome feelings can be minimized, and students can feel supported and included. To address Imposter Syndrome on college campuses, I developed a one-day training on Imposter Syndrome, symptoms of Imposter Syndrome, …

PURPOSE: The Mayo-Baylor RIGHT 10K Study enabled preemptive, sequence-based pharmacogenomics (PGx)-driven drug prescribing practices in routine clinical care within a large cohort. We also generated the tools and resources necessary for clinical PGx implementation and identified challenges that need to be overcome. Furthermore, we measured the frequency of both common genetic variation for which clinical guidelines already exist and rare variation that could be detected by DNA sequencing, rather than genotyping.
METHODS: Targeted oligonucleotide-capture sequencing of 77 pharmacogenes was performed using DNA from 10,077 consented Mayo Clinic Biobank volunteers. The resulting predicted drug response-related phenotypes for 13 genes, including CYP2D6 …
