Classifying Hazardous Movements And Loads During Manual Materials Handling Using Accelerometers And Instrumented Insoles., Mitja Trkov, Duncan T Stevenson, Andrew S Merryweather
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
Improper manual material handling (MMH) techniques are shown to lead to low back pain, the most common work-related musculoskeletal disorder. Due to the complex nature and variability of MMH and obtrusiveness and subjectiveness of existing hazard analysis methods, providing systematic, continuous, and automated risk assessment is challenging. We present a machine learning algorithm to detect and classify MMH tasks using minimally-intrusive instrumented insoles and chest-mounted accelerometers. Six participants performed standing, walking, lifting/lowering, carrying, side-to-side load transferring (i.e., 5.7 kg and 12.5 kg), and pushing/pulling. Lifting and carrying loads as well as hazardous behaviors (i.e., stooping, overextending and jerky lifting) were …
Bridging The Gap Between Evidence Based Opioid Sparing Techniques And Anesthesia Provider Practice, Kelly Hempfling
Bridging The Gap Between Evidence Based Opioid Sparing Techniques And Anesthesia Provider Practice, Kelly Hempfling
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
In light of the current opioid epidemic in the United States, multiple sectors of health care specialties and nursing leaders have been called to aide in reversing this deadly opioid abuse trend. As a team, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), surgeons, and anesthesiologists have made great strides in developing evidence-based protocols titled Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). ERAS protocols vary according to the surgical specialty; however, one universal component includes opioid sparing techniques such as peripheral nerve blocks. Despite ERAS protocol’s benefits throughout the perioperative period, according to the literature, many anesthesia groups across the nation are non-compliant with their …

Eras For Cardiac Surgery: Development Of A Clinical Practice Guideline For Antifibrinolytic Administration In Cardiac Surgery, Christopher T. Foltz, Katonya C. Lawson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) guidelines are multimodal perioperative care
pathways based on evidence-based practice to promote faster recovery after surgical procedures.
For cardiac surgery ERAS, one intervention that is strongly recommended based on high levels
of evidence is the use of antifibrinolytic medications, such as Tranexamic acid (TXA) and
epsilon aminocaproic acid (EACA) which are synthetic antifibrinolytics and analogs of lysine,
both known for exerting procoagulant effects by competitively inhibiting activation of
plasminogen to plasmin. Antifibrinolytic medications have been shown to decrease blood loss as
well as the need for blood transfusions and reoperation.
There is strong evidence from …
Content And Activity Of Cytochrome P450 3a In Rat Brain Microsomes And Mitochondria, Nouf Alshammari
Content And Activity Of Cytochrome P450 3a In Rat Brain Microsomes And Mitochondria, Nouf Alshammari
Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses
The potential contribution of CYP3A in brain microsomes and mitochondria is crucial to designing appropriate therapeutic strategies and preventing toxicities. Until recently, there has been limited data reported in the literature with respect to CYP3A activity and its expression in the brain tissue. The reason for this limitation is most likely the relatively low level of CYP3A in the brain tissue. To this end, the primary purpose of this study is to develop a CYP3A functional assay in rat brain mitochondria and microsomes to determine the Michaelis-Menten kinetics of the formation of CYP3A-mediated hydroxylated metabolites of midazolam by UPLC-MS/MS. We …

Clinical Recommendations For Non-Anesthesia Healthcare Providers Performing Emergency Airway Management Outside The Operating Room, Danielle Ridgway
Clinical Recommendations For Non-Anesthesia Healthcare Providers Performing Emergency Airway Management Outside The Operating Room, Danielle Ridgway
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Emergency endotracheal intubations occurring outside of the Operating Room (OR) are often performed by non-anesthesia providers. At a large, urban, level one trauma center, the current airway management policy for these non-anesthesia providers does not follow best practices based on the literature. Specifically, some non-anesthesia providers are not credentialed and/or privileged to administer neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) during emergency endotracheal intubations. The purpose of this project was to develop evidence-based clinical recommendations for emergency airway management outside of the OR. The following objectives are framed using the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Model and were established to achieve the projects …

School Psychologists & Crisis Response: How Are We Doing?, Abigail Roush
School Psychologists & Crisis Response: How Are We Doing?, Abigail Roush
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
School psychologists are well positioned to be involved in crisis response at their schools, but little is known about how prepared they are to respond or how accurately they would respond to various crisis events. This project examined school psychologists’ rated levels of preparedness and experience, and how well or accurately they responded to hypothetical crisis vignettes across small-, moderate-, and large-scale events. Results showed that self-rated preparedness and experience were not related to accuracy of response, as measured by a rubric. When using a rubric that included elements of the PREPaRE model to score how accurately participants responded to …

Behavioral Response To Intervention And Adhd: What Is Working, Christina Sacca
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study was to review the literature around behavioral response to intervention. In recent years, there has been little research conducted on behavioral response to intervention and, furthermore, little research conducted on interventions with respect to ADHD symptoms. A systematic review of the literature was conducted and all available literature on behavioral RTI in the schools with students diagnosed with ADHD since 2005 was identified and reviewed. Demographics of participants included in these studies were reviewed to analyze the population samples being referred for behavioral symptoms of ADHD. Remaining gaps in the literature were discussed in addition …

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
It is evident that individuals within the education field maintain a high level of involvement and responsibility within their school role(s). However, the primary purpose of schooling is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for students to grow socially, emotionally, and academically. This requires teachers to create thoughtful, applicable lesson plans to encourage their students to succeed. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the importance of utilizing one’s time to research and develop differentiated instructional strategies for each unit. Data was collected weekly through an analysis of test scores from three separate assessments. These consisted of a pretest, …
The Impact Of Social Isolation During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Personal Account Of Social Isolation, Patricia Espinal Ramos
The Impact Of Social Isolation During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Personal Account Of Social Isolation, Patricia Espinal Ramos
Communication & Media Studies | Senior Theses
I am no stranger to social isolation and its effects on my mental, emotional and physical health. A variety of factors such as limited research, misconceptions associated with its impact mainly in older adults, and its interchangeability with loneliness, previously impeded people’s knowledge and understanding of the subject. This research paper is a hybrid of personal experiences as well as quantitative and qualitative data that analyzed how the restrictions shed light on the effects and misconceptions of social isolation, especially in the disabled community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Females and males survey participants (N- 68) were asked to report their …
The Impact Of Psychological Interventions Given To Icu Patients To Help With Pain Management, Kelly Liu
The Impact Of Psychological Interventions Given To Icu Patients To Help With Pain Management, Kelly Liu
Nursing | Senior Theses
Pain management among the critically ill population is a significant issue in the intensive care setting. Whether the pain is acute or chronic, nurses tend to be the first-hand responders to help with pain management in the intensive care unit (ICU). With barriers ranging from patients’ inability to verbalize pain to nurses’ experience with obstacles to assessment such as sedation, confusion, or other concerns, pain management is a serious issue. Although pharmacological interventions such as opioids and analgesics help with pain control, in this thesis, we will focus on the impact of nonpharmacological and psychological nursing interventions and how it …

Background: Cannabis use disorder among young people with a first episode of psychosis contributes to relapse, hospitalization, and impaired functioning. However, few studies have examined what young people with early phase psychosis, particularly those from Black racialized communities, understand or appreciate about this relationship, even though they may be at risk. There are no formally tested knowledge translation strategies that disseminate these research findings for young people with emerging psychosis from Black racialized communities. Objective: This study aims to conceptualize what young people with early phase psychosis/cannabis use disorder understand about the relationship between cannabis and psychosis, focusing on people …

A Descriptive Study Of College Students’ Preferences Toward Rhetorical Devices In Advertisements, Rachel Beyer
A Descriptive Study Of College Students’ Preferences Toward Rhetorical Devices In Advertisements, Rachel Beyer
Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses
Advertisements are specifically created to convince people of the importance to either buy a product or subscribe to an ideal. Companies are the primary users of advertisements, where advertisements are designed to increase profitability (Roberts, 2020). The advertising industry in America is quite large. Food is a diversified and competitive industry, this competition in the food industry causes companies to be dependent on consumer preference and knowledge (UC Davis Nutrition Department, 2020). With Generation Z on the rise, there should be an increased focus on their preferences and needs in all industries, including the food industry (Southgate, 2017). The purpose …
Evidence-Based Practice Guideline Development: Selection Of Local Anesthetics And The Additive Dexamethasone In Brachial Plexus Blocks, Alexandra Mcguire
Evidence-Based Practice Guideline Development: Selection Of Local Anesthetics And The Additive Dexamethasone In Brachial Plexus Blocks, Alexandra Mcguire
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Brachial plexus blocks (BPB) are a type of regional anesthesia that inhibits the sensory and motor function of the upper extremity. The efficacy of a BPB depends on the type and dose of local anesthetics (LA), as well as the use of any additive agent. The selection of LA depends on the type, concentration, and volume of LA. Certain additives, such as dexamethasone, when added to BPB, were shown to increase motor and sensory block duration.
A chart audit conducted by the pharmacy and anesthesia departments revealed a significant variability of clinical practice in the use of LA and additives …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) guidelines for Documenting Anesthesia Care Practice and Policy Considerations, anesthesia provider documentation represents a detailed account of the patient’s anesthesia care during various phases of anesthesia during their hospital stay (Documenting Anesthesia Care: Practice and Policy Considerations, 2016). The primary purpose of anesthesia documentation is to capture accurate and comprehensive information communicating a patient’s anesthetic experience, which includes the documentation of all administered medications. The patient’s electronic or written medical record is a legal document, which is also referenced for reimbursement, quality improvement, and review by external organizations for …
Change For The Ohio Nurse Practitioner Treating Worker's Compensation Patients: A Needs Analysis, Jessica Huff
Change For The Ohio Nurse Practitioner Treating Worker's Compensation Patients: A Needs Analysis, Jessica Huff
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Autonomous nurse practitioners are an effective and useful member of the healthcare team, particularly when given a less restrictive scope of practice at the state level. The autonomous nurse practitioner can help improve patient outcomes/needs as a decision-making health care team member.
Ohio nurse practitioners treating worker’s compensation patients are limited in treating the injured worker not because of the nurse practitioner scope of practice, but because of the bureaucratic paperwork worker’s compensation requires of its patients/providers. The purpose of the project was to conduct a needs analysis regarding a legislative change proposal for the practice authority of nurse practitioners …
“Strumpet,” “Huswife,” “Whore”: Centering Othello’S Bianca, Phoebe Merten
“Strumpet,” “Huswife,” “Whore”: Centering Othello’S Bianca, Phoebe Merten
English (MA) Theses
Is Bianca a sex worker? What meanings change if she is or isn’t? Not enough artistic or critical attention has been paid the character. It seems likely that the initial lack of attention stemmed from Bianca’s status as a purported sex worker, as though this makes her somehow categorically different from the other women in the play, or inherently less interesting. There has in the past decade or so been a marked increase in scholarship on sex work, but this too largely skims over Bianca, likely because of the ambiguity surrounding her profession.
In my introduction I go over some …

Within the retail sector, two sections have grown drastically with the help of each other in the past decade. Those two sections include online retail and second-hand retail. Online retail has grown remarkably due to the implementation of online atmospherics. This phenomenon led to the purpose of this study: to observe the online atmospherics present in online second-hand retail. To achieve this purpose, the literature related to online retail, target audience, motivations of consumers, reselling, and online second-hand apps was explored. For this study, five online second-hand retail sites were chosen. Eighteen of the most common online atmospherics were observed …
Youth Organizing From Within: A Case Study Of A District Youth Equity Council, Amy Elizabeth Nelson
Youth Organizing From Within: A Case Study Of A District Youth Equity Council, Amy Elizabeth Nelson
Dissertations
The experiences of Black, indigenous, and person of color (BIPOC) youth in our school systems often share a common thread of having to navigate deficit thinking, institutionalized racism, marginalization, and discrimination (Hammond, 2015; Ladson-Billings, 2016; Roy et al., 2019). While youth organizing has emerged as a potential counter to deficit narratives, it is rarely seen in school settings (Arthurs, 2018; Kirshner & Ginwright, 2012; Roderick et al., 2020; Roy et al., 2019). Using critical race theory as a framework, this case study examined a sample of BIPOC middle and high school students serving on a district Youth Equity Council, their …
