An Analysis Of The Environmental And Security Risks Related To Crude Oil Transportation, Carolina Ana Da Graca
An Analysis Of The Environmental And Security Risks Related To Crude Oil Transportation, Carolina Ana Da Graca
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
This paper informs and reviews the environmental and security risks related to crude oil transportation. The necessity for oil in various nations has increased the volume of oil transportation, resulting in the exponential change in the maritime oil transportation business. As a result, the vulnerabilities and the demand for safety have grown in importance. Today, transportation oil spills account for roughly 13% of all oil contamination in the world's waterways. This paper aims to understand how oil spills happen, the major contributors' factors, and prevention methods. To complete my goal, I interviewed 20 people, 4 of them independently and the …

First Generation Female College Students' Health, Stress And Alcohol Use, Melissa Sosa
Senior Honors Projects
Going to college can be a stressful time for many adolescents/emerging adults. For some, this may be the first time they are living on their own, caring for themselves, and managing their time without the direct supervision of parents. Guided by social- ecological theory, this study examined family influences of stress, well-being, and alcohol use among female undergraduate college students, and compared the experiences of first-generation college women (FirstGens) with those whose parents attended college. We hypothesized FirstGens might not experience the same level of anticipatory guidance from parents that could ease the transition to college. This cross- sectional study …

Safety Measures In The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit: An Organizational Assessment, Tina Yates
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Long-term video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring in the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) is an elective procedure and generally safe. Clinical experts determined the EMU protocols at a level-4 comprehensive epilepsy center were not followed correctly. The project is a retrospective chart audit incorporating Ray’s Bureaucratic Caring theoretical framework with Donabedian’s conceptual model. The project objective is to evaluate if safety measures protocols are implemented appropriately in the EMU and determine whether a need exists for quality improvements.
The project reviewed patients admitted to the EMU from September 2021 through November 2021 who developed a generalized tonic clonic (GTCs) seizure with electrographic epileptiform …

In this article, we outline progress and challenges in establishing effective health promotion tied to visitor experiences provided by protected and conserved areas in Canada. Despite an expanding global evidence base, case studies focused on aspects of health and well-being within Canada’s protected and conserved areas remain limited. Data pertaining to motivations, barriers and experiences of visitors are often not collected by governing agencies and, if collected, are not made generally available or reported on. There is an obvious, large gap in research and action focused on the needs and rights of groups facing systemic barriers related to a variety …
Developing Continuous Measures Of Trust For Human-Automation Systems, Jack Marzullo
Developing Continuous Measures Of Trust For Human-Automation Systems, Jack Marzullo
Master's Theses
Decision aids are developed to ease cognitive load on operators interacting with complex automation systems; however, critical human components are often ignored during design. Finding an appropriate balance of automated assistance and operator trust is paramount in achieving optimal output from the human-automation interaction. Establishing a consistent metric of trust measurement will enhance the functional design of automated decision aids, especially as the use of eye tracking opens the field to the use of real-time measurements. This study will task participants to make measurements, assisted by a decision aid system, within a bone defect model image. The study will test …

The Effects Of Incorporating Kinesthetic Learning On Learning Outcomes And On-Task Behavior, Katherine Sauro
Master's Theses
This action research study used a mixed methods design to examine the effects of kinesthetic learning on student learning outcomes, and on task behavior in a sixth-grade social studies classroom. Data was collected during a three-week period. The treatment group was presented with kinesthetic lessons, purposeful movement, and brain breaks. The control group remained stationary during their lessons. Findings suggested an increase in both on-task behavior, and learning outcomes. In addition to examining learning outcomes and on task behavior, student's perceptions were also considered through the students’ completion of weekly surveys. These surveys suggested that providing movement to students positively …

Master's Theses
The breakers tripped. Again. The breakers, a mandatory halt to trading on the floor of the stock exchange in response to the S&P falling more than 7% from the previous close. This was instituted after the Crash of 1987 to calm the markets before trading is allowed to resume. They are supposed to mitigate a drastic crash. They have only ever triggered once before, in 1997. Not for the tech bubble. Not even in the crash of 2008. All trading stops for fifteen minutes when the Level One breaker trips. If it drops further in the same day, the Level …

F. Scott Fitzgerald’S Homme Épuisé: Usurping The “Madwoman” In Tender Is The Night (1934) [2022], Emma Hill
Master's Theses
Nineteenth-century women writers commonly use themes of entrapment and madness in what are now classified as gothic novels. In texts such as Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, and The Yellow Wallpaper, confinement and madness are synchronous in developing the figure of “the madwoman.” These texts were written during a time when it was uncommon for female writers to seek publication, and many used pseudonyms to get their works published or to be taken seriously by critics. The “madwoman” emerged as a powerful trope to articulate what writing under a patriarchal system feels like. That is to say, confinement scenarios resulting from female …

Drawing The Line: Exploring The After-Work Recovery Process Using A Latent Profile Analysis, Alyssa Michels
Drawing The Line: Exploring The After-Work Recovery Process Using A Latent Profile Analysis, Alyssa Michels
Theses and Dissertations
The present study utilized a person-centered approach to examine the individual differences in the after-hours recovery process and begin to elucidate the differential influence of boundary management variables (i.e., segmentation preference, segmentation supplies, and boundary control), on variables that are important to the after-hours recovery process (i.e., after-hours work, recovery experiences, and recovery outcomes). Previous research has shown conflicting results regarding the negative influence of working during non-work hours on recovering from work, as well as inconsistencies concerning the boundary management variables that moderate this relationship. The person-centered analysis revealed that quantitatively distinct subpopulations or profiles, made up of different …
Effects Of Sunrise/Sunset Lighting On Corticosterone Levels In Coturnix Quail (Coturnix Coturnix), Hannah Feuerborn
Effects Of Sunrise/Sunset Lighting On Corticosterone Levels In Coturnix Quail (Coturnix Coturnix), Hannah Feuerborn
Poultry Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Both genetics and environment play an important role in the growth, performance and overall welfare of poultry species. Current commercial production practices typically do not mimic the natural environmental conditions of ancestral poultry species, specifically lighting requirements. In nature, poultry species are subjected to natural day length and the slow rising and setting of the sun. This is compared to commercial conditions in which lights are sudden on/off, not mimicking the natural trajectory of the sun in terms of light intensity and exposure. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of genetics and the effect of sunrise/sunset lighting on …

Radicalization Of The Spectacle: Fostering Free Artistic Expression Through Architecture, Mackenzie Lubin
Radicalization Of The Spectacle: Fostering Free Artistic Expression Through Architecture, Mackenzie Lubin
Architecture Senior Theses
My thesis, entitled Radicalization of the Spectacle, explores the intersection between the urban conditions of New York City, Times Square, and the notion of radicalization. The term ‘radicalization’ refers to an extreme change in worldly affairs. This term is critical in understanding my view of architecture, as it suggests architecture must formatively react to changes in culture, climate, politics, etc. Moreover, the term ‘radical’ is aggressively progressive and favors social reform performance, adding an urgency for new ideas to form. Secondly, the term ‘Spectacle’ refers to a visually and spatially arresting event that is dramatic in occurrence. The act of …

A Child’S Mental Health Journey: Using An Activity Book As A Guide For Mental Health Literacy And Emotional, Social And Behavioral Development, Sage Sherfick '22
Honor Scholar Theses
Like adults, children experience mental health symptoms that can have negative effects on their life and development. According to the CDC (2018), 1 in 6 children has a mental health disorder are 2-8 years old. The prevalence of many mental health disorders increases as children age, and those 6 to 11 years old are more likely to have behavioral problems. There are many theories of why this may be, including the increase in the number of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) a child may have. Those who are exposed to trauma during childhood are at greater risk for lifelong health problems. …

To understand the attitude of the college-age population towards the U.S. medical care system, the researcher conducted an online survey study with 296 participants. By calculating Pearson’s r correlation coefficient, the researcher found the more positive one’s past experience with the U.S. medical care system, the more positive one’s general attitudes toward the U.S. medical care system. In addition, one’s trust level in COVID-19 vaccines was found to be correlated with one’s level of trust in the U.S. medical care system. What’s more, online information was identified by the majority of the participants as a factor influenced their attitudes toward …

Speech-Language Pathologists' Academic Preparation For Transition Services, Kathleen Bridgforth
Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses
When individuals with disabilities reach their senior year of high school, they undergo a transition period. Speech-language pathologists are often tasked with working on an interdisciplinary team to assist individuals undergoing transition. While research has been done on how professionals as a group can help with transition, there has been little to no research done on how SLPs can be better prepared to assist during this process. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the preparedness of SLPs in high schools to assist individuals undergoing the transition period. The requirements for the participants include being a practicing or past …
Assessment And Treatment Of Childhood Apraxia Of Speech: The Perspective Of Current Speech-Language Pathologists, Sabrina White
Assessment And Treatment Of Childhood Apraxia Of Speech: The Perspective Of Current Speech-Language Pathologists, Sabrina White
Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses
“Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a neurological childhood (pediatric) speech sound disorder in which the precision and consistency of movements underlying speech are impaired in the absence of neuromuscular deficits (e.g. abnormal reflexes, abnormal tone)” (ASHA, 2007b, Definitions of CAS section, para. 1). The role of speech-language pathology in conjunction with childhood apraxia of speech is the treatment of whichever speech sound disorders exist. The variable nature of CAS creates challenges for SLPs. Presently, “there are no validated diagnostic features that differentiate CAS from other childhood speech sound disorders.” (ASHA, 2007b, Signs and Symptoms, para 1). Due to this …

Horticulture research reports
Periodic flooding of the lower Gascoyne River floodplain at Carnarvon is a natural event. The flooding results from cyclonic and thunderstorm activity in the catchment, with the risk period generally from November to May, associated with the wet season in the north of WA. The Carnarvon horticultural area has suffered considerable damage following flooding of the Gascoyne River in 1960,1961, 1974, 1980, 1995, 2000, 2009, 2010/11 and 2021.
The WA Government has undertaken restoration programs to replace soil lost for most of these major flooding events. Apart from the soil loss and risks of permanent damage to the natural resource, …

Ransomware And Malware Sandboxing, Byron Denham
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The threat of ransomware that encrypts data on a device and asks for payment to decrypt the data affects individual users, businesses, and vital systems including healthcare. This threat has become increasingly more prevalent in the past few years. To understand ransomware through malware analysis, care must be taken to sandbox the ransomware in an environment that allows for a detailed and comprehensive analysis while also preventing it from being able to further spread. Modern malware often takes measures to detect whether it has been placed into an analysis environment to prevent examination. In this work, several notable pieces of …
