Protocol Development For Preventing Inadvertent Perioperative Hypothermia In Outpatient Surgical Patients, James Lower May 2022

Protocol Development For Preventing Inadvertent Perioperative Hypothermia In Outpatient Surgical Patients, James Lower

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Hypothermia changes normal physiology resulting in altered clotting, metabolism, immune function, and healing processes which increases patient’s risk for adverse outcomes. During the perioperative period anesthesia is recognized as a main cause of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH). As a result several organizations have developed clinical practice guidelines (CPG) to prevent IPH. There is an inconsistent utilization of warming devices and a lack of policy and procedure directing the effective maintenance of normothermia for surgical patients at a medium sized academic level one trauma hospital in the Midwest. Having no established standard practice protocol within this institution places the patients at …

'Code Red' In The English Language Arts Classroom: How Turkish Grade 9 Students Respond To Climate Change And Climate Change Education, Toby-Alan Ray

International Graduate Program for Educators Master's Projects

Climate Change is fast becoming one of the most important issues for humanity to address. Education must clearly play a key role in creating future generations that understand the causes, impacts and solutions to this problem so that they can ameliorate the impacts and adapt.

One area many studies disagree on is whether climate change knowledge translates into pro-environmental behaviour or not, and whilst several studies point out that the topic benefits from being taught in a cross-curricula fashion, so that sociological as well as scientific ideas can be appreciated together, the suitability of the ELA classroom to the topic …

A Comparative Analysis On The Precision Of The “Push/Thumb Test” Conducted During Orthopedic Procedures, Avery Waldron May 2022

A Comparative Analysis On The Precision Of The “Push/Thumb Test” Conducted During Orthopedic Procedures, Avery Waldron

Medical Engineering Theses

This study explored the precision of the “push/thumb” test conducted during orthopedic joint replacement. Participants were eight orthopedic residents ranging from three to five years of experience. Three sets of six simulated bones were 3D printed at varying density to mimic the variation surgeons may experience from patients in real life. Bone sets were randomized for two experiments. Both experiments had subjects conduct the “push/thumb” test on the simulated bone sets and binary responses were recorded. For experiment 2, subjects were provided a reference tool to utilize during the “push/thumb” test to determine if said tool had a positive impact …

A Mixed-Method Examination Of Primary Care Physician Message Strategies To Correct Patient-Held Health Misinformation: An Application Of Goals-Plans-Action Theory, Tayah Renea Wozniak May 2022

A Mixed-Method Examination Of Primary Care Physician Message Strategies To Correct Patient-Held Health Misinformation: An Application Of Goals-Plans-Action Theory, Tayah Renea Wozniak

Communication (PhD) Dissertations

Given the prevalence of health misinformation (i.e., inaccurate health messaging that lacks scientific evidence), there is a need for successful communication strategies to combat this detrimental health issue (Krishna & Thompson, 2021). Guided by goals-plans-action theory (Dillard, 1990), which explains the communicative process of creating and implementing influence messages, the purpose of this dissertation was to: (a) uncover primary care physician goals, plans, and action when correcting patient-held health misinformation and (b) experimentally test corrective influence messages for their effectiveness from the patient’s perspective. Two studies addressed these two purposes. In Study One, results of surveys of primary care physicians …

Understanding Law Enforcement Mental Health Communication And Police Officers’ Mental Health Support Preferences: A Grounded Theory Study, Erin S. Craw

Communication (PhD) Dissertations

Throughout the United States, police officers experience cumulative stress and their mental health-related concerns often remain unaddressed. Recently, police departments have begun to offer more mental health support resources in an attempt to mitigate this issue. However, the underutilization of such support is a serious problem. The overall goal of this dissertation is to develop a grounded theory of mental health communication in law enforcement. Employing a constructivist grounded theory approach, data were collected in two sequential phases. Phase one involved 48 in-depth semi-structured interviews with active and retired police officers to examine how the messages police officers receive from …

Moral Matching: Strategic Messaging To Overcome Barriers To Persuasion, Tess M. Buckley May 2022

Moral Matching: Strategic Messaging To Overcome Barriers To Persuasion, Tess M. Buckley

Communication (PhD) Dissertations

Persuasive messages are often met with resistance. Message fatigue is a unique motivational state caused by excessive exposure to redundant messages, which leads to active and passive resistance towards persuasive messages. The consequences of active and passive resistance are particularly harmful when directed towards messages intended to assist individuals in making health decisions. This dissertation investigated a message framing strategy, moral matching, to combat message fatigue resistance in the context of COVID-19. Guided by message fatigue and moral foundation theory literature, there were three main purposes of this dissertation. The first purpose was to identify what features of COVID-19 health …

Real-Time Monitoring Of Paraquat Photodegradation Using Colloidal Gold Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Nathan Wilson May 2022

Real-Time Monitoring Of Paraquat Photodegradation Using Colloidal Gold Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Nathan Wilson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Monitoring chemical reactions in aqueous solution is a challenge because most instrumental techniques either are not suited for the rapid timescales, are not sensitive enough to detect products at low concentrations, or do not have sufficient structure-to-spectrum relationships. Raman spectroscopy is a promising method to monitor reactions, as it is fast, dependent on chemical structure, and has little interference from water. However, Raman scattering is generally very weak. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) improves the signal strength of Raman spectroscopy by using a metal surface plasmon, or oscillation of the surface’s electrons, to allow for highly selective and sensitive detection and …

Implications Of The Improvement Science Process On Swpbis Implementation At A Title I High School, Cody Rich

Dissertations

Disparities in discipline are well documented throughout our nation as the gap continues to increase (Losen et al., 2015; Losen & Skiba, 2016; Raush & Skiba, 2004; The Civil Rights Data Collection, 2014). Though Black students comprise only 16% of the student population in the United States, they account for nearly half of school suspensions and expulsions (The Civil Rights Data Collection, 2014). In the context of RHS (location of this dissertation in practice), Black students encompass nearly 20% of the student population while accounting for approximately 30% of the total number of referrals. More alarming is that administration suspended …

This report explores the gap in racial diversity between students and faculty members at Nevada’s two research universities: UNLV and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). As one of the most racially diverse states in the United States, Nevada is an ideal case study for understanding this gap in racial diversity, and an ideal laboratory for …

Strengthening The Southern Nevada Workforce Pipeline, Katie M. Gilbertson May 2022

Strengthening The Southern Nevada Workforce Pipeline, Katie M. Gilbertson

Student Research

Workforce development has been a keystone in the discussion of economic diversification of Las Vegas for decades. The leisure and hospitality industry is the lifeline for the Southern Nevada economy due to the reliance on tourism as the city’s main economic driver. The leisure and hospitality industry requires physical labor and more face-to-face customer interaction than other employment sectors. Thus, these jobs often do not require high educational attainment, but rather sharp soft skills like effective listening, nonverbal communication, and negotiation strategies. While these are valuable traits, the lack of educational attainment within the leisure and hospitality workforce suppresses employees’ …

Translational Approaches To Understanding Resilience To Alzheimer's Disease., Sarah M Neuner, Maria Telpoukhovskaia, Vilas Menon, Kristen M S O'Connell, Timothy J Hohman, Catherine Kaczorowski

Faculty Research 2022

Individuals who maintain cognitive function despite high levels of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-associated pathology are said to be 'resilient' to AD. Identifying mechanisms underlying resilience represents an exciting therapeutic opportunity. Human studies have identified a number of molecular and genetic factors associated with resilience, but the complexity of these cohorts prohibits a complete understanding of which factors are causal or simply correlated with resilience. Genetically and phenotypically diverse mouse models of AD provide new and translationally relevant opportunities to identify and prioritize new resilience mechanisms for further cross-species investigation. This review will discuss insights into resilience gained from both human and …
