Tennessee Prostitution Amnesty Law Analysis, Emma Sharou, Ally Biegel, Allene Fields, Kennedy Kittner
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Currently, people engaging in prostitution who report crimes in Tennessee can face charges should their involvement with prostitution come to light during the report. This barrier to services can prevent individuals from seeking help and infringes upon their rights as crime victims. The Tennessee Prostitution Amnesty Law aims to remove this barrier and seeks to combat the violence experienced by individuals engaging in prostitution by safely providing them with a voice to report crimes against themselves and others without facing charges for prostitution. Additionally, the law states that providing a voice for these individuals will in turn create more opportunities …

Tracking Professional Growth: Developing A Digital Professional Portfolio Training, Rachel Whitney
MUSC Conference Presentations
Background: Creating a professional portfolio is important for promotion, tenure, annual evaluation, and professional certification. As an early career health sciences librarian, I was advised to track my accomplishments as they happened to make applying for a promotion easier in the future. After successfully creating and utilizing a digital professional portfolio of my own, other librarians asked me to teach them how to develop digital portfolios. An in-service program was created that would provide training, support, and a template for both new and experienced library faculty.
Description: After investigating options for an electronic method of organizing and tracking my professional …

The Effects Of Climate Change On The Transmission Of Lyme Disease, Schuyler Hedican, Katherine Kistler, Iveth Martinez Granados
The Effects Of Climate Change On The Transmission Of Lyme Disease, Schuyler Hedican, Katherine Kistler, Iveth Martinez Granados
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Lyme disease currently affects approximately 300,000 people annually in the United States, but climate change threatens to increase this number. Rising temperatures, humidity, and levels of rainfall are impacting the relationship and interactions between the bacterium that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), its vectors, and associated hosts. Climate change models predict a northward expansion of these disease-carrying vectors and hosts into new territories in North America, as formerly unsuitable territories become more hospitable, most notably in Canada. Human exposure to the bacteria through the bite of an infected tick can lead to the characteristic symptoms of Lyme disease, such as …

Investigation Of Emergency Department Visits And Hospitalization Rates Of Child Physical Abuse At Cooper University Hospital Prior To And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Afeerah Ahmad, Rachel Silliman Cohen, Laura Brennan
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The COVID-19 pandemic has been detrimental for children. Many families have experienced stressors, including unemployment, financial hardship, and familial illness. These factors all pose increased risk for child physical abuse. Limitations in child welfare services affected investigations and provision of services to high-risk families. The extent to which the rates of physical abuse in NJ have been affected is unknown. We sought to answer the question of whether the COVID-19 pandemic affected the severity of physical abuse and the incidence of physical abuse presenting to Cooper University Hospital.
We hypothesized that there would be a higher proportion of severe child …

Is Blood Flow Restriction Training Superior For The Limitation Of Hamstring And Quadriceps Atrophy After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction? A Review Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Joshua M. Spada, Ryan W. Paul, Bradford S. Tucker
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Post operative recovery from Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) includes extensive rehabilitation of 6-9 months with return to sport/activity at 12 months
Rehabilitation is initiated shortly following surgery to limit quadriceps and hamstring atrophy, maximizing long term tibiofemoral joint stability and functional outcomes
The best way to achieve improved muscle strength and prevent atrophy is progressive overload training, however, these activities cannot be performed post operatively without risk to the reconstructed knee
Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR) involves impairing the blood supply for short periods through the application of an air-filled bladder or cuff to restrict the venous drainage of …

Lead poisoning has been regarded as a major threat due to its irreversible and harmful effects. This includes severe cognitive and developmental impairments, especially in children.
Over the years, the CDC has reduced the benchmark for acceptable blood lead levels (BLL) from 10 μg/ml to 3.5 μg/ml to allow for earlier intervention and prevention.
Despite increased awareness and government programs that lead to a decline in mean blood levels across the country, testing for elevated BLLs, especially in low-income households, continues to be disproportionately lower.

Latarjet Surgery Leads To Decreased Rates Of Subjective Instability Compared To Bankart Repair With Concomitant Remplissage, Joshua Spada, Ryan W. Paul, Manoj Reddy, Gabriel Onor, John Hayden Sonnier, Ari Clements, Meghan E. Bishop, Brandon J. Erickson
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Background: Predictive factors for performing remplissage concomitantly with arthroscopic Bankart repair include the presence of humeral or glenoid defects >11% and/or revision surgery. International and societal consensus statements support these findings, as surgeons recommend the Latarjet procedure for patients with significant glenoid bone loss (>15-20%) while remplissage is recommended for patients with off-track or engaging Hill-Sachs lesions without significant glenoid bone loss. While several studies have compared outcomes between Latarjet surgery and remplissage, these studies have only evaluated patients with engaging Hill-Sachs lesions, not consecutive patient cohorts indicated for each surgery.
Purpose: To compare rates of recurrent instability, re-operation, …

A Puzzling Case Of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus In The Outpatient Setting, Shadi Shams, Asim Shafique, Marym Khan, James Bailey
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a disease of adulthood characterized by the triad of gait disturbance, dementia, and urinary incontinence. Since NPH shares a lot of characteristics with other disorders including neurodegenerative disorders and degenerative-dystrophic spine, it is usually underdiagnosed and undertreated. Combination of ventriculomegaly seen on a computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with clinical findings could be used in diagnosis of NPH. However, improvement of symptoms post spinal tap procedure would be a better indication of diagnosis. Currently, shunt placement is the best available modality of treatment for NPH. Here we present a case of …

Making The Old New: The Recontextualization And Traditionalization Of Tree Spirits In Video Games, Alexandria Ziegler
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Folklorists study the active rituals between humans and deities, as well as the inactive participation between them in narrative. However, they do not study the active participation that comes in the form of video games between them, though with shifts in society, this new way of engaging through digital forms is widespread and accessible. In my research, I studied Russian and Japanese tree spirits in a variety of video games to understand this new form of engagement with ancient deities. These video games are Okami, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Black Book, and The Witcher 3: The …

Case Report: A Patient With Gait Dysfunction With Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Masquerading As Diabetic Polyneuropathy, David Parkes, Russell Mordecai
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
New onset gait dysfunction often prompts admission to the hospital for further evaluation. The typical patient is an elderly person who normally is self-sufficient but had recently experienced a decline in their ability to care for themselves. Sometimes, however, those who present with gait dysfunction do not fit the expected demographic. These individuals raise concern for less common “zebra” presentations of neurological dysfunction. We describe one such rare case of a 39-year-old female with a new onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus and recent COVID-19 infection that presented to the emergency department with a sensation of bilateral lower extremity burning …

Impact Of Behavioral Health Consultant Intervention On Health Outcomes In An Integrated Primary Care Setting, Arpita Suri, Attiyah Zaheer, Christine Leroy, Robert Steer, Bhavin Shah, Sahil Zaveri, Shideh Doroudi
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Integrated Primary Care Models are fast gaining popularity, and often being advocated as an important step in enhancing patient care within a primary care setting. Several studies have shown a positive impact of Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) intervention in terms of patient satisfaction, improvement in patient symptom scores and global mental functioning. However, additional studies are needed to assess if integrated behavioral health consultations can demonstrate measurable outcome improvements to quantify the benefits of this approach, related to some of the most commonly seen and treated medical diseases in a primary care setting. This study aims to measure three outcomes: …
Cdk8 Kinase Module Modifies Expression Of Specific Translation-Related Proteins Before And After Stress, Brittany Friedson, Katrina Cooper
Cdk8 Kinase Module Modifies Expression Of Specific Translation-Related Proteins Before And After Stress, Brittany Friedson, Katrina Cooper
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Translation is tightly coupled to growth status. Efficient protein synthesis is necessary for cell growth in nutrient rich environments, while global translation inhibition combined with selective translation of stress-responsive mRNAs helps limit growth in times of stress. Environmental stress cues which inhibit the nutrient-sensing complex TORC1 are known to reduce general translation, but how does the cell alter protein synthesis machinery to adapt to these conditions? A few mechanisms to promote cell survival in nitrogen starvation include post-translational modification and selective degradation of specific mRNA-binding translation factors, as well as inhibition of activators of genes whose products are required for …
Impact Forces And Patterns Of Axonal Injury Differ Between Two Models Of Tbi, Edward Lai, David M Devilbiss
Impact Forces And Patterns Of Axonal Injury Differ Between Two Models Of Tbi, Edward Lai, David M Devilbiss
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects approximately 3.8 million Americans a year and results in complex neuropathological and neurocognitive sequelae. Animal models of TBI attempt to replicate the impact forces and pathology of injury in humans. However, in these models, the forces generated at the time of impact are poorly understood. Nonetheless, a variety of shear and strain forces generated at the time of impact can produce diffuse axonal injury. Injury to axons and neurons across a variety of brain regions resulting from axonal injury underlies the cognitive and behavioral impairments observed after TBI. Three critical brain regions, the corpus callosum …
