Building A Supply Chain For Emergency: A Case Study Of Kingfa's Mask Supply Chain, Nanjing Li
Building A Supply Chain For Emergency: A Case Study Of Kingfa's Mask Supply Chain, Nanjing Li
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In case of emergency such as pandemic or earthquake, there are usually surge demands for some necessary products, which are usually far more than available production capacities thus it is necessary to quickly build more production capacities. However, building production capacities is not just building production lines but to constructing whole supply chains, from raw materials and equipment sourcing, manufacturing flow lines to demand management.
To quickly construct a supply chain for fulfilling such emergency demands is very challenging both theoretically and practically. This thesis aims to develop a model of supply chain construction for emergency demand and identify the …
Essays On Financial Materiality Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Corporate Strategies, Yang Lan
Essays On Financial Materiality Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Corporate Strategies, Yang Lan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation investigates how the endorsement of certain social activities by CSR standards impacts stakeholders’ interpretation on firms’ motivation of doing CSR and how managers make decisions on which specific CSR activities they would like to participate in. The first essay examines how the standards release of CSR by Sustainability and Accounting Standards Board (SASB) affects the relationship between material CSR and firm performance outcomes in terms of stock returns (for investors) and sales growth (for customers), through shaping investor and customer perceptions on the motivation underlying a firm’s material CSR activities. I further argue that a sharp increase in …

Resolution Of Deep Peroneal Nerve Palsy After Seroma Evacuation In A Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Case Report., Brian W Skura, Craig Goubeaux, William C Burgette
Surgery Articles
INTRODUCTION: In this manuscript, we present a late presentation of deep peroneal nerve symptoms after total hip arthroplasty (THA) which subsequently completely resolved after seroma evacuation and sciatic nerve decompression. While hematoma formation causing deep peroneal nerve symptoms after THA has been reported in the literature, we are unaware of any reports of seroma formation causing similar symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old female underwent an uncomplicated primary THA and developed paresthesia's over the lateral leg and foot drop on post-operative day 7. Ultrasound diagnosed a fluid collection compressing the sciatic nerve. The patient underwent seroma evacuation and sciatic nerve decompression. …
Start-Up Firms And Corporate Culture: Evidence From Advertised Corporate Culture, Jungho Lee
Start-Up Firms And Corporate Culture: Evidence From Advertised Corporate Culture, Jungho Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
I document advertised corporate culture among start-up firms from an online job board. Two corporate-culture types emerge, one that concerns the well-being of em- ployees (worker-centered culture) and another that emphasizes other values, such as cus- tomers, firms, and markets (firm-centered culture). The worker-centered culture attracts 20% more applications than the other culture type. Firms advertising the worker-centered culture exploit worker preference by paying 5% lower salaries than measurably similar jobs. Using a standard model of business creation, I show financially constrained start- ups are incentivized to advocate popular culture, even though doing so is not optimal without financial constraints.
The Ephemerality Of The Living And The Persistence Of The Inanimate, Erin Johnston
The Ephemerality Of The Living And The Persistence Of The Inanimate, Erin Johnston
MFA in Visual Art
I create fragile, sculptural works with paper. Either cast from pre-existing objects or constructed forms, my three-dimensional works ultimately become pure paper objects. I use the visual language of absence, memory, ruin and ephemerality to present modern artifacts and address the now. I am interested in how the manufactured crumbs we leave behind as a species reveal our collective desires, and our relationship to the body and mortality. I am fascinated with, and even enchanted by, the proliferation of material objects and their tendency to surpass the lifespan of any single human. Perhaps this behavior of producing lasting creations is …

We explore the effect of auxiliary labels in improving the classification accuracy of wearable sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR) systems, which are primarily trained with the supervision of the activity labels (e.g. running, walking, jumping). Supplemental meta-data are often available during the data collection process such as body positions of the wearable sensors, subjects' demographic information (e.g. gender, age), and the type of wearable used (e.g. smartphone, smart-watch). This information, while not directly related to the activity classification task, can nonetheless provide auxiliary supervision and has the potential to significantly improve the HAR accuracy by providing extra guidance on how …
Reducing Administrative Burdens To Protect Taxpayer Rights, Leslie Book, T. Keith Fogg, Nina E. Olson
Reducing Administrative Burdens To Protect Taxpayer Rights, Leslie Book, T. Keith Fogg, Nina E. Olson

The tax system designed by Congress imposes significant administrative burdens on taxpayers. IRS decisions regarding how it administers tax laws can add to congressionally imposed burdens. The administrative burdens are consequential and hurt some people, especially lower- or moderate- income individual taxpayers, more than others. While the IRS strives to measure and reduce the time and money taxpayers spend to comply with their tax obligations, it does not consider the effect administrative burdens have on taxpayer rights, including the right to be informed, the right to pay no more than the correct amount of tax, and the right to a …

Objectives: To analyze charges, complications, survival, and functional outcomes for definitive surgery of mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN).
Materials and methods: Retrospective analysis of 76 patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy with reconstruction from 2000 to 2009.
Results: Complications occurred in 49 (65%) patients and were associated with preoperative drainage (odds ratio [OR] 4.40, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-19.27). The adjusted median charge was $343 000, and higher charges were associated with double flap reconstruction (OR 8.15, 95% CI 2.19-30.29) and smoking (OR 5.91, 95% CI 1.69-20.72). Improved swallow was associated with age <67 years (OR 3.76, 95% CI 1.16-12.17) and preoperative swallow (OR 3.42, 95% CI 1.23-9.51). Five-year ORN-recurrence-free survival was 93% while overall survival was 63% and associated with pulmonary disease (HR [hazard ratio] 3.57, 95% CI 1.43-8.94).
Conclusions: Although recurrence of ORN is rare, surgical complications are …

Treatment with BRAF/MEK-targeted therapy has revolutionized care in melanoma and other cancers, however therapeutic resistance is common and innovative treatment strategies are needed1,2. We studied a group of melanoma patients treated with neoadjuvant BRAF/MEK-targeted therapy (NCT02231775, n=51), and observed significantly higher rates of major pathologic response (MPR= <10% viable tumor at resection) and improved recurrence-free survival (RFS) in females versus males (MPR-66% versus 14%, p=0.001; RFS-64% versus 32% at 2 years, p=0.021). Findings were validated in a several additional cohorts2–4 patients with unresectable metastatic melanoma treated with BRAF and/or MEK-targeted therapy (n=664 patients in total), demonstrating improved progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in females versus males in several of these studies. Studies in pre-clinical models demonstrated significantly impaired anti-tumor activity in male …10%>

Coil Embolization Of Ruptured Distal Renal Artery Pseudoaneurysm With Gross Hematuria And Hemorrhagic Shock, Andrea Mcsweeney, Anand Tarpara, Dawn Salvatore, Paul J Dimuzio, Michael Nooromid, Babak Abai
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Renal artery pseudoaneurysms have been infrequently reported in the literature. In the present report, we have described a case of a ruptured renal artery pseudoaneurysm requiring coil embolization. A 49-year-old man had presented to our institution with a hypertensive emergency. Computed tomography revealed a 3.4-cm right renal artery pseudoaneurysm. Nonemergent coil embolization was planned for the following day. However, he became hypotensive, exsanguinating frank blood from the urethra. An arteriogram showed extravasation of contrast into the pseudoaneurysm sac, renal pelvis, and ureter, consistent with intrarenal pseudoaneurysm rupture. We have demonstrated coil embolization as a method of repairing a ruptured renal …

Variable Selection Using Amodified Gibbs Sampler Algorithm With Application On Rock Strength Dataset, Ghadeer J. M. Mahdi, Othman M. Salih
Baghdad Science Journal
Variable selection is an essential and necessary task in the statistical modeling field. Several studies have triedto develop and standardize the process of variable selection, but it isdifficultto do so. The first question a researcher needs to ask himself/herself what are the most significant variables that should be used to describe a given dataset’s response. In thispaper, a new method for variable selection using Gibbs sampler techniqueshas beendeveloped.First, the model is defined, and the posterior distributions for all the parameters are derived. The new variable selection methodis tested usingfour simulation datasets. The new approachiscompared with some existingtechniques: Ordinary Least Squared (OLS), …

Impact Of Invasive Insects On Native Insect Communities, Taiadjana M. Fortuna, Philippe Le Gall, Samir Mezdour, Paul André Calatayud
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Several biophysical factors are leading to the loss of biodiversity, among them the dominance of exotic invasive species on native communities is important. Their dominance can lead to changes in the structure of insect communities, by competing and displacing native species to other crops or habitats. These changes can impact the herbivore's natural enemies in invaded areas by diverging them from suitable herbivores and altering their biological control process. The development of edible insects and derived products at an industrial scale can also have an impact on the local fauna by the risks of spillover and accidental release in nature. …

After five years of its first report on the African continent, Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is considered a major threat to maize, sorghum, and millet production in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the rigorous work already conducted to reduce FAW prevalence, the dynamics and invasion mechanisms of FAW in Africa are still poorly understood. This study applied interdisciplinary tools, analytics, and algorithms on a FAW dataset with a spatial lens to provide insights and project the intensity of FAW infestation across Africa. The data collected between January 2018 and December 2020 in selected locations were matched with the monthly …

Evaluating A Statistical-Based Assessment Tool For Stratifying Risk Among U.S. Air Force Organizations, Tiffany A. Low
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force Inspection System is a proponent of utilizing a risk-based sampling strategy (RBSS) for conducting inspections from major command levels down to the unit level. The strategy identifies areas deemed most important or risky by commanders and prioritizes them accordingly for an independent assessment by the Inspector General. While Air Force regulation specifies the need to use a RBSS for inspection, the implementation process is delegated to individual commands and, subsequently, wings. The 23rd Wing, the sponsor for this research, directed us to analyze a RBSS tool highlighted as an example from which to adopt for those units …

Increased interest in developing new nonlinear optical materials has led to 3rd generation materials, such as BaGa4Se7 and LiB3O5. These two nonlinear optical crystals have the potential to enable development of tunable lasers operating across the mid-wave infrared and the ultraviolet regions, respectively. Coherent light sources are used in the development of enhanced technologies with commercial and defense-based applications such as: health and environmental monitoring devices, next-generation infrared countermeasures, and ballistic missile booster exhaust plume characterization. The performance of optical materials in high-powered military applications is largely limited by the presence of defects. These defects …
Scheduling For Space Tracking And Heterogeneous Sensor Environments, Gabriel H. Greve
Scheduling For Space Tracking And Heterogeneous Sensor Environments, Gabriel H. Greve
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation draws on the fields of heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithm development, resource allocation problems, and scheduling to address key Air Force problems. The world runs on many schedules. People depend upon them and expect these schedules to be accurate. A process is needed where schedules can be dynamically adjusted to allow tasks to be completed efficiently. For example, the Space Surveillance Network relies on a schedule to track objects in space. The schedule must use sensor resources to track as many high-priority satellites as possible to obtain orbit paths and to warn of collision paths. Any collisions that occurred …
Reconciliation, Restoration And Reconstruction Of A Conflict Ridden Country, Muhammad S. Riaz
Reconciliation, Restoration And Reconstruction Of A Conflict Ridden Country, Muhammad S. Riaz
Theses and Dissertations
Conflict has sadly been a constant part of history. Winning a conflict and making a lasting peace are often not the same thing. While a peace treaty ends a conflict and often dictates terms from the winners’ perspective, it may not create a lasting peace. Short of unconditional surrender, modern conflict ends with a negotiated cessation of hostilities. Such accords may have some initial reconstruction agreements, but Reconciliation, Restoration and Reconstruction (RRR) is a long term process. This study maintains that to achieve a lasting peace: 1) The culture and beliefs of the conflict nation must be continuously considered and …
Diagnostics Of Dementia From Structural And Functional Markers Of Brain Atrophy With Machine Learning, Tetiana Habuza
Diagnostics Of Dementia From Structural And Functional Markers Of Brain Atrophy With Machine Learning, Tetiana Habuza
Dissertations
Dementia is a condition in which higher mental functions are disrupted. It currently affects an estimated 57 million people throughout the world. A dementia diagnosis is difficult since neither anatomical indicators nor functional testing is currently sufficiently sensitive or specific. There remains a long list of outstanding issues that must be addressed. First, multimodal diagnosis has yet to be introduced into the early stages of dementia screening. Second, there is no accurate instrument for predicting the progression of pre-dementia. Third, non-invasive testing cannot be used to provide differential diagnoses. By creating ML models of normal and accelerated brain aging, we …
Teacher Perceptions Of Gender Differences In An Elementary Pbis System, Meggan Buchanan
Teacher Perceptions Of Gender Differences In An Elementary Pbis System, Meggan Buchanan
Dissertations
This research project examined teacher perceptions of gender differences in an elementary Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) System. The purpose of the project was to understand why male students were referred to the office at a higher rate than female students. The research was conducted through a staff survey and disaggregating seven years of Office Discipline Referral (ODR) data through School-wide Information System (SWIS). The critical issues explored are the number of referrals, the types of referrals received, and teachers' perception of gender differences in the PBIS system. It is my hope that this research will help provide the …
Transportation Utility Fee To Fund Transit In California, Shishir Mathur, Ralph Robinson
Transportation Utility Fee To Fund Transit In California, Shishir Mathur, Ralph Robinson
Mineta Transportation Institute
Public transit is a key tool to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to combat climate change; improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers; and expand accessibility and mobility for all. However, we can only realize this potential by making sufficient investments to provide transit service levels that attract and retain greater ridership. To help with this needed investment, a handful of local governments have turned to transportation utility fees (TUFs), primarily collected as a monthly charge on customers' utility bills or property tax bills. While more widely used to support street maintenance, this study identifies six case studies where TUF …

This research project 1) evaluates the effect of road network, demographic, and land use characteristics on road crashes involving teen drivers, and, 2) develops and compares the predictability of local and global regression models in estimating teen crash frequency. The team considered data for 201 spatially distributed road segments in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA for the evaluation and obtained data related to teen crashes from the Highway Safety Information System (HSIS) database. The team extracted demographic and land use characteristics using two different buffer widths (0.25 miles and 0.5 miles) at each selected road segment, with the number of …

COVID-19 may have forever changed our world. Given the limited space and air circulation, potential infections on public transportation could be concerningly high. Accordingly, this study has two objectives: (1) to understand air circulation patterns inside the cabins of buses; and (2) to test the impact of different technologies in mitigating viruses from the air and on surfaces inside bus cabins. For the first objective, different devices, metrics and experiments (including colored smoke; videotaping; anemometers; pressure differentials; particle counts; and 3D numerical simulation models) were utilized and implemented to understand and quantify air circulation inside different buses, with different characteristics, …
