Archives And Children's Knowledge, Elliott Kuecker, Ashley Rockenbach

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This article argues for the importance of collecting works created by children—not just about and not just for—in formal archival collections. Framed through the ideas of legitimate knowledge and epistemic injustice, this piece combines notions important to children’s rights activists and childhood studies scholars with the role archives can play in preserving children’s knowledge through child-created materials. The authors describe how researchers struggle to find work created by children within archives, impacting the ability to create child-centered research that centers children’s views of the world as prominently as adult views of the world. Some collections that do include child-created materials …

Background

Benign transient hyperphosphatasemia (BTH) in children is characterized by temporary highly elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in the absence of liver or bone disease and a return to normal within 3 to 4 months. Since its first description in the 1950s, several cases of BTH in infants and children have been reported. Although there is no known etiology for this illness, it has been associated with viral infections. This condition has rarely been seen in the adult population, and there is scarce available information. The sialylation of the ALP isoenzymes decreases their renal clearance from the circulation; however, …

The Efficacy Of The Fitzpatrick Scale In Clinical Practice, Dana Olsen, Cecilia Nguyen, Marshall Hall, Michael Carletti, Stephen E. Weis

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Many skin diseases can manifest differently depending on the pigment of one’s skin. The Fitzpatrick scale is a classification of phototypes (I-VI) that categorizes patients' skin based on its ability to tan and burn. Even though it is a simple questionnaire, the Fitzpatrick scale has numerous criticisms due to its dependence on patients’ self-perception, variability in how questions are asked, limited range, and the underestimation of the risk of skin cancers. Alternatives to the Fitzpatrick scale include the melanin index, pigment protection factor, a visual color scale, and using artificial intelligence along with existing or new scales. Having a more …

Defensive Publications Series

Title: The SP-26 Protocol: A Pathogen-Agnostic Standard for Intracellular Mechanical Neutralization

Author: Jon Sterling Gossett This disclosure establishes the SP-26 Protocol, an industrial-inspired engineering standard for the mechanical termination of both viral and bacterial pathogens. By shifting the neutralization mechanism from biochemical interference to solid-state biomineralization, the protocol creates a mutation-proof hardware-lock against replication. All information in this disclosure is a theoretical engineering standard and requires empirical verification. The protocol utilizes engineered hematopoietic units to divert standard phagocytosis and viral entry into a peripheral Synthetic Virus-Containing Compartment (S-VCC). Once sequestered, the unit initiates a mass-triggered petrification event that encases the …

Battery State Estimation, Kang Kang, Yu Wang, Alex Pelosi, Emil Chen, Ishu Pradhan Feb 2026

Battery State Estimation, Kang Kang, Yu Wang, Alex Pelosi, Emil Chen, Ishu Pradhan

Defensive Publications Series

Estimating a battery's state of charge (SoC) can become more difficult as a device, for example a mobile phone or vehicle, ages. This difficulty may be partly due to a potential circular dependency where SoC calculations may depend on the battery's state of health (SoH), and SoH estimation may in turn rely on an accurate SoC. A technique is described to address this challenge by decoupling these two estimations. A system can use a machine learning model to generate an independent SoH estimate based on operational data features, such as differential charge with respect to voltage. This SoH estimate can …

Foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land has risen significantly in recent years. From 2014 to 2023, the share of agricultural acres owned by foreign interests increased by 67%. Although the share of agricultural acres owned by foreign countries and interests only amounts to just over 3% of the total U.S. private farmland, the U.S. federal government and many states have passed laws to prohibit, restrict, limit, regulate or create requirements for foreign ownership of agricultural land and real property. As of 2025, twenty nine states have passed laws to regulate such foreign ownership.

This Comment outlines the regulations on foreign …
