The Effects Of Declining U.S. Immigration On Local Labor Markets In Mexico, Gonzalo Ares De Parga-Regalado, Marta Prato
The Effects Of Declining U.S. Immigration On Local Labor Markets In Mexico, Gonzalo Ares De Parga-Regalado, Marta Prato
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper examines how declining migration opportunities to the United States affect local labor markets in Mexico. Using novel micro-level data from consular identification cards and deportations, we link individuals’ Mexican municipalities of origin to their U.S. destination states. We implement a shift-share design based on historical migration networks and exploit regional variation in exposure to changes in U.S. migration flows between 2017 and 2022 to identify the local labor market effects of reduced emigration while controlling for involuntary repatriations. While we find no impact on overall employment rates, regions more exposed to the decline in migration experience an increase …

Home-Based Dual-Task Balance Training For Parkinson’S Disease: A Feasibility Study Of A Randomized Controlled Trial, Nesibe Cakmak, Jennifer Freeman, Camille Carroll, Lisa Bunn
School of Health Professions
Purpose: Dual-task training, incorporating both motor-motor and/or motor-cognitive elements, is recognized as a safe and effective strategy for enhancing balance in individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Despite this, limited research has explored the implementation of dual-task training within a home-based context or superiority of task types. This study aims to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of two novel, unsupervised home-based programmes; each adopting a comparable procedure yet with a focus on motor-motor and motor-cognitive dual-task training. Methods: Six participants with mild to moderate stage Parkinson’s disease wererandomized to group (M-DTT/C-DTT). Each engaged in 30-minute training sessions three times per week over six …

Late Local Recurrence Of Gastric Cancer After Preoperative Radiochemotherapy: Three Case Reports And Literature Review, Mateusz M. Gajek, Magdalena Szymala-Cortez, Jerzy Wydmański
Pacific Journal of Health
Gastric cancer (GC) ranks as the fifth most common cancer type, contributing significantly to cancer-related mortality. This paper presents three cases of patients treated with preoperative radiochemotherapy (preopRTCT) at the National Cancer Center who experienced recurrences of GC after 15, 11 and 19 years. In all cases follow-up ended years before recurrence. Relapse was diagnosed late and treatment outcome was poor. We believe that extending the follow-up period for gastric cancer patients beyond the initial treatment is necessary especially for younger patients with large tumors. Late recurrences, often diagnosed at advanced stages, require differentiation from second primary malignancies, a process …

Camouflage Orthodontic Treatment Of Skeletal Class Ii Malocclusion With Missing Mandibular Incisors Using Improved Superelastic Ti–Ni Alloy Wire, Pin-Yu , Chen, Yuan-Hou Chen, Yuan-Hou Chen, Jian-Hong Yu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
This article presents a camouflage orthodontic treatment utilizing the improved superelastic Ti-Ni alloy wire (ISW) to address a case of skeletal Class II malocclusion with two missing mandibular incisors. A 28-year-old female patient with a chief complaint of poor dental alignment sought orthodontic evaluation. Clinical examination revealed a Class III molar relationship, mild crowding, and lingually positioning of tooth 35. Radiographic analysis confirmed a skeletal Class II pattern. The treatment plan included the application of an ISW curve over the maxillary arch to control anterior tooth inclination. Canine distal drive and anterior retraction were performed following the extraction of bilateral …

Interdisciplinary Orthodontic Management Of Class Ii Severe Hypodontia Using Improved Super-Elastic Ti-Ni Alloy Wire, Hsuan Jeng, Yuan-Hou Chen, Jian-Hong Yu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
This case report presents the orthodontic management of a 23-year-old male with severe hypodontia, specifically the congenital absence of all premolars and bilateral peg laterals. The patient sought treatment due to dissatisfaction with previous orthodontic outcomes, characterized by noticeable spacing in the upper anterior region. Clinical evaluation revealed a skeletal Class II relationship and several dental anomalies, prompting the need for an interdisciplinary approach.
The patient was treated using an improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire (ISW), which provided consistent light continuous forces, high elasticity, and super-elastic properties beneficial for controlling tooth movement in patients with missing teeth and anchorage limitations. …

Long-Term Interdisciplinary Management Of Severe Vertical Bony Defects Using Periodontal Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (Paoo), Chun-Han Su, Huei-Mei Tsai, Yi-Min Liu, Yuen-Yung Tsang, Yu-Ling Cheng
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Background: Management of severe malocclusion in patients with chronic periodontitis poses significant challenges due to compromised periodontal support and alveolar bone loss. Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) may facilitate tooth movement while promoting bone regeneration in such cases.
Case presentation: A 33-year-old male with chronic periodontitis and severe malocclusion presented for orthodontic correction. Initial treatment included comprehensive periodontal therapy—oral hygiene control, open-flap debridement, and bone grafting—prior to orthodontic intervention. Congenital absence of tooth 12 resulted in mesial drift, and teeth 17, 24, and 27 were extracted due to poor prognosis. Despite initial periodontal improvement, inflammation and labial plate collapse at …

Correction Of Facial Asymmetry Using Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy Combined With Anterior Mandibular Midline Split And Genioplasty, Po-Yu Yang, Chia-Tze Kao, Yi-Chieh Chen, Wen-Ken Tai
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Facial asymmetry accounts for approximately two-thirds of orthognathic surgical patients and may involve discrepancies in any of the three spatial planes. Conventional bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) has limitations in correcting patients with significant discrepancies in bilateral ramus angles. This paper proposes a novel surgical approach for the correction of facial asymmetry using BSSO combined with an anterior midline mandibular split osteotomy and genioplasty.
A 30-year-old woman presented with a skeletal Class III pattern, occlusal canting, and a 3-mm deviation of the chin to the right. Intraoral examination revealed an anterior crossbite, dental midline deviation, and a left Angle’s Class …

Purpose: This article introduces a digital workflow for creating a miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) guide, to virtually determine the proper MARPE position and to precisely transfer it into the reality. Materials and Methods: A digital workflow was established by the following steps: (1) generating a digital model with palatal soft tissue from the digital scan, (2) isolating teeth on the digital model from the CBCT file for band size try-in using AI software (DentalSegmentator), (3) constructing a model with four parallel cylinders simulating the MARPE screws’ pathways, (4) superimposing the three models to determine the proper MARPE position, (5) …
To Extract Or Not To Extract: On What Basis Do We Make That Decision? (Part Ii), Ib Leth Nielsen
To Extract Or Not To Extract: On What Basis Do We Make That Decision? (Part Ii), Ib Leth Nielsen
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
The most common extraction pattern in orthodontic patients with crowding of the teeth is the four first bicuspids. This is usually done in cases with severe crowding or bimaxillary protrusion. In some instances, orthodontists have decided, instead of extracting the first bicuspids, to extract the second bicuspids, for various reasons that we shall discuss in this review. Several other extraction patterns have also been implemented in the past, including second molars, lower incisors, and even asymmetric extractions. In this review, we shall discuss the pros and cons of each of these choices. In some patients, clinicians have even decided to …
Water Control And The Growth Of Agricultural Production In Developing Countries, Françoise Conac
Water Control And The Growth Of Agricultural Production In Developing Countries, Françoise Conac
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
The article presents water control as a central condition for agricultural growth in developing countries, where it can stabilize yields, raise productivity, and support more intensive farming. It reviews the benefits of irrigation, drainage, and flood control, while also emphasizing the frequent failures of past projects caused by weak planning, inappropriate techniques, poor maintenance, and insufficient user participation. The author highlights the environmental and health risks of badly managed irrigation, including salinization, waterlogging, and disease, and argues for revised water policies that integrate technical, financial, institutional, and social dimensions. Farmer participation is presented as essential to effective water management.

Lessons From The Making Of Modern Property: Reinventing Roman Law In Europe And Its Peripheries, 1789–1950, Laura S. Underkuffler
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
This article examines the evolution and reinvention of Roman law concepts in shaping modern property law across Europe and its peripheries between 1789 and 1950. Focusing on Anna di Robilant’s analysis, it explores how nineteenth-century jurists utilized the ideal of dominium—property as an individual’s absolute entitlement—to respond to the social and economic upheavals of the era. While this model emphasized personal autonomy, freedom, and equality, it was inherently in tension with the demands of collective needs and societal change. The article discusses the practical and philosophical clashes between dominium and the social function of property, tracing the historical debates and …

INTRODUCTION: Social work discourse regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in practice, research, and education has proliferated over the last 5 years, reflecting both excitement over its potential and ambivalence about its ethical challenges. However, the extent to which social work is fully engaging with the structure of AI and its enormous impacts on the environment, labour, and distribution of power remains unclear.
METHODS: An integrative review of social work literature from 2020–2024 was conducted to address two research questions: 1) What is the nature of the social work discourse related to AI? 2) To what extent is the discourse …
Romanist-Bourgeois Property And The Development Of The Modern Capitalist World System, Anna Di Robilant
Romanist-Bourgeois Property And The Development Of The Modern Capitalist World System, Anna Di Robilant
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
This article examines the role of Romanist-bourgeois property law in the development of the modern capitalist world system, focusing on how nineteenth-century jurists deliberately crafted and adapted Roman law-based property doctrines to address the evolving social relations of production in both Europe and its peripheries. Rather than viewing legal concepts as merely reflective of broader economic transformations, the author highlights the active role played by a professional class of jurists in shaping property law to legitimize and structure emergent capitalist class dynamics. The article critically engages with competing scholarly perspectives that either privilege market expansion or downplay class relations, arguing …
Workplace Diversity In A Diverse World: Why Inclusion And Ethics Matter, Julianna Cutcher
Workplace Diversity In A Diverse World: Why Inclusion And Ethics Matter, Julianna Cutcher
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
As global populations grow and evolve, diversity becomes an increasingly prominent and complex characteristic of society and the workplace. Diversity encompasses the vast array of individual differences and similarities among people, affecting how organizations operate and interact. In the United States, the diversity index rose to 61.1% in 2020, reflecting a significant demographic shift. However, promoting diversity alone is insufficient; effective management also requires attention to equity and inclusion. Organizations must foster ethical workplace cultures that support diverse perspectives through comprehensive training, employee development, and inclusive policies. By embracing a holistic approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), businesses can …

From Farm To Fork, And Beyond: The International Politics Of Food Standards, Julia E. Srnec
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
Food safety standards are incredibly politically charged due to how much they can differ between countries and how implementing new standards in a country can impact the economy of those depending on the exports of food products. The political division regarding food safety standards can begin to be understood once the impacts on national and international economics, as well as the consequences of regulations beyond the economy, are considered. Nongovernmental organizations such as the World Health Organization help to mitigate conflict over trade policy disagreements, however some divisions persist. The use of non-tariff barriers on the imports of food-related goods can …

Ethics Of Artificial Intelligence For Lawyers: Resistance Is Futile: Candor, Supervision, And Fees, Cliff Mckinney
Ethics Of Artificial Intelligence For Lawyers: Resistance Is Futile: Candor, Supervision, And Fees, Cliff Mckinney
Arkansas Law Notes
In Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Borg deliver their iconic warning to every species they encounter: “Resistance is futile.” The line resonates because it conveys the inevitability that once the Borg arrive, escape is no longer an option.
For lawyers, the duties of candor, supervision, and fairness in fees are just as inescapable. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (“ABA Opinion”) makes clear that, regardless of how powerful artificial intelligence becomes, it cannot relieve attorneys of their obligation. Attorneys must verify what they file, oversee how their colleagues use the technology, and ensure that clients are charged fairly. This installment examines …

Introduction: Advanced-stage high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) is a disease that is difficult to manage due to its heterogeneous clinical behavior. No reliable prediction of response to chemotherapy is currently available and the overall survival rate remains poor. Herein, we sought to determine the molecular mechanisms by which microRNAs (miRNAs) confer chemoresistance in ovarian cancer and demonstrate the efficacy of targeting miRNAs to sensitize HGSC to cisplatin treatment.
Methods: Next-generation miRNA sequencing was performed using microdissected HGSC specimens to identify an miRNA signature for intrinsic chemoresistance, and miR-625-3p was selected for further study. The effects of miR-625-3p on cisplatin sensitivity …

Objective
To investigate the association between BMI Z-scores and postoperative complications in pediatric patients with neuromuscular scoliosis undergoing spinal instrumentation.
Methods
Pediatric patients who underwent spinal instrumentation for neuromuscular scoliosis from July 2012 to June 2016 with a minimum 2-year follow-up were included. BMI and BMI Z-scores were calculated, and patients were stratified into CDC-defined BMI-for-age percentiles: underweight (< 5th percentile), normal (5th to < 85th percentile), overweight (85th to < 95th percentile), and obese (≥95th percentile). Logistic regression assessed associations of BMI, BMI Z-score, and BMI groups with postoperative complications.
Results
In total, 147 patients were included. Average follow-up was 3.2 ± 1.4 years. The most common diagnosis was cerebral palsy (39.5%). Complications occurred in 65 (44.2%) patients: 32 (21.8%) had a surgical site infection (SSI), …
Hospice Ownership & Quality Metrics (Analytics & Policy Link), Craig Rijkaard
Hospice Ownership & Quality Metrics (Analytics & Policy Link), Craig Rijkaard
Doctoral Student Association Conference
The landscape of hospice ownership has undergone a dramatic shift over the past two decades (2005-2014 and 2015-2025). Historically, hospice has been chiefly profitable as an industry comprising not-for-profit agencies. From 2015-2016, private equity entities have increasingly impacted for-profit ownership, which now owns approximately 12% of hospice agencies. This trend has raised concerns that private equity entities' emphasis on short-term profitability may reduce the quality of hospice care and services, potentially affecting end-of-life care. The aim of the research is to examine how hospice ownership status, patients’ primary hospice diagnosis, and the setting of hospice care predict three measures of …

Doctoral Student Association Conference
While the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) was designed to improve the quality of care and promote value-based care, a growing body of evidence challenges the assumption that the 30-day readmission rate reflects hospital performance. While completing my dissertation, I had the opportunity to use AI to support my qualitative data analysis. During my presentation, I plan to share insights from the literature regarding the use of AI in analysis, as well as my own experiences, including both the benefits and the limitations. The purpose of this discussion is not to promote the use of AI, but rather to foster an open and honest dialogue about its role in research.

A qualitative study of a subgroup of veteran students facing unique socialization challenges when transitioning from the military to academic environments. This qualitative, exploratory study will use narrative inquiry to examine the socialization challenges of RANG (Reserve and National Guard) military students in the higher education community college environment. By analyzing these challenges, the researcher hopes to contribute to a greater understanding of non-traditional students and how college administrators and instructors can more effectively support their academic and career goals.
This presentation would be of particular interest to students and candidates in the Instructional Design Leadership doctoral program.
