Mould Risk Prevention In Healthcare Facilities In Hot And Humid Climates Through Acmv Air Supply Parameter Optimisation: Development And Validation Of A Multi-Objective Optimisation Framework, Jiang Kaiyun
Student Works (2020-2029)
Air conditioning mechanical ventilation (ACMV) supply parameters—such as airflow rate, temperature, and humidity—significantly influence indoor thermal and hygrometric conditions, influencing airflow patterns and mould proliferation. In healthcare facilities, mould poses significant health risks, particularly for immunocompromised patients, contributing to respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and infections. While ACMV systems are central to infection control and indoor air quality, conventional designs often fall short in hot and humid climates. Existing practices typically prioritise high air change rates (ACH) without sufficient dehumidification, underestimate humidity control, and assume spatial homogeneity, overlooking microclimates conducive to localised mould growth. To address these limitations, this research develops …

Multi-Modal Tensor Fusion For Alzheimer’S Disease Recognition, Mason Li, Tiffany Le, Jiajing Huang, Yuxin Wen
Multi-Modal Tensor Fusion For Alzheimer’S Disease Recognition, Mason Li, Tiffany Le, Jiajing Huang, Yuxin Wen
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Accurate and early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is critical for effective intervention, disease monitoring, and patient care. Traditional diagnostic approaches rely on a single modality, such as clinical assessments, neuroimaging, or genetic markers, which may fail to capture the complex, multifaceted nature of AD. Multimodal learning has therefore been explored to integrate complementary information across data sources. However, conventional fusion strategies, including early feature concatenation and late decision-level fusion, often model modalities independently and fail to capture high-order cross-modal interactions. To address these limitations, we propose a multimodal tensor fusion network (MTFN) that integrates heterogeneous data sources, including visual …

Research Review: "Understanding Women’S Transitions From Military To Department Of Veterans Affairs Care", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
Over the past two decades, increasing numbers of women have served in the military, with women now comprising 17.3% of active-duty personnel and 21.4% of National Guard and reserves. During military service, women often incur painful musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries related to carrying heavy loads and wearing ill-fitting gear. While women may receive initial care for these injuries under the auspices of the Department of Defense (DoD), these injuries often linger and further treatment in required as women transition to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) care. However, little is known about this transition process, and whether women are given adequate information …

Makara Journal of Science
Staphylococcus aureus is a major Gram-positive pathogen that is increasingly resistant to antibiotics, significantly contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR)-related deaths. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the antibacterial activity of calcined chicken eggshell powder (CCEP), a waste-derived material rich in calcium compounds. CCEP was prepared by calcining eggshell powder at 900 °C for 3 hours. Its antibacterial potential was evaluated using in vitro assays, including agar disc diffusion and broth microdilution, as well as in silico molecular docking against penicillin-binding protein 4 (PBP4, PDB ID: 3HUM). The in vitro results showed that a 20% (w/v) CCEP solution in glycerol produced …

Detection of cracks in concrete is crucial for the safety of bridges and the overall infrastructure. This paper presents a new hybrid method that combines handcrafted and deep features to significantly improve classification accuracy. Texture and semantic information are captured using Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and a pre-trained Xception model, respectively. These features are converted by the Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) method, combined, and the best features are selected by using the Apriori algorithm. The selected features are classified utilizing the light MobileNetV3, a large network. Our method is tested on four public datasets, namely CODEBRIM, DIMEC, Crack, BCD, …

Baghdad Science Journal
It is highly interesting to explore the implications of Markov chain stability because its importance in engineering, dynamic systems, energy subject and decision-making issues. This paper deals with a method to assess the stability of Markov chains, finishing our notes in finite fuzzy Markov chains. The optimization of KKT was evaluated in two approaches: a. For one thing, optimized KKT methods substitute the random transition probability with a fuzzy value in the transition matrix. The problem illustrates the efficacy of method in proving the unique properties for power bounds of a 3 × 3 matrix depending where on this it …

New Statistical Distribution Smart1, Saad Naji Al-Azzawi, Mahmood A. Shamran, Aseel H. Ali
Baghdad Science Journal
This paper introduces a new nonclassical statistical distribution, SMART1, derived from a nonpolynomial function. This function is used in ecology to model population growth rates, in medicine to classify the relationship between activity and tumor volume in cancer, and in economics to analyze the relationship between supply and demand. The proposed distribution differs from the Gompertz distribution, which is fundamentally based on the exponential function. By contrast, the SMART1 distribution is constructed on principles of mathematical analysis, specifically through the identification of local maximum endpoints of the Gompertz growth function and the subsequent verification that the resulting function satisfies the …

Dual Focus Attention Block Unet (Dfab-Unet) For Robust Skin Lesion Segmentation, Fallah H. Najjar, Farhan Mohamed, Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, Diana Sofia De Oliveira Bernardo, Luís Filipe Almeida Bernardo, Vei Siang Chan
Baghdad Science Journal
Skin cancer is the most fatal type of cancer worldwide. Prognosis is generally much better with early detection and effective treatment relies on an accurate diagnosis of skin lesions. Despite progress in deep learning, there is still a challenge to provide accurate segmentation of dermoscopic skin lesions due to image variations stemming from different illuminative input parameters, different resolutions/image sizes, image artifacts and varying skins. These differences hinder state-of-the-art models from learning pixel-precise lesion boundaries or more contextual features, consequently impairing their generalization and clinical applicability. We introduce a new architecture called Dual Focus Attention Block UNet (DFAB-UNet) with intrinsic …

Historically, visualization of vascular networks within the musculoskeletal system, particularly in mineralized tissues such as bones and joints, has been limited to conventional 2D histological approaches. Recent advances in optical tissue clearing technologies and fluorescence imaging approaches in whole, intact tissues offer an entrée to interrogate the vasculature at unprecedented resolution during both musculoskeletal development and in pathologic contexts in three dimensions. However, these clearing techniques were originally not developed for imaging hard mineralized tissues, such as the femur and tibia. Herein, we have optimized tissue decalcification conditions and compared aqueous- and solvent-based tissue clearing approaches to establish an optimal …

Two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channels are the most recently identified family of potassium channels. They are regarded as the largest group of background “leak” channels, encoded by 15 mammalian KCNK genes, and divided into six subfamilies (TWIK, TREK, TASK, TALK, THIK, and TRESK). These channels have a role in stabilizing the resting membrane potential. Their widespread presence in the heart and vasculature supports cellular homeostasis by regulating cardiac rhythm, vascular tone, and protection against ischemic stress. The TASK, TWIK, and TREK subfamilies are the most abundantly expressed K2P channel subfamilies in the cardiovascular system, and dysregulation of specific members has …

Invasive mucinous carcinoma (IMC) is an uncommon histologic subtype of breast cancer characterized by abundant extracellular mucin and generally indolent behavior. It occurs more frequently in older women and is often associated with favorable prognostic features. An 84-year-old woman with no prior history of breast malignancy was found to have a suspicious lesion in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast on routine imaging. Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy demonstrated IMC, Grade I/III, involving all four cores, with the largest contiguous tumor focus measuring 1.3 cm. Immunohistochemistry showed strong estrogen receptor positivity (95%), progesterone receptor positivity, human epidermal growth factor …

MDM4 (Murine Double Minute 4), also known as MDMX, is a crucial negative regulator of the tumor suppressor p53. MDM4 heterodimerizes with MDM2 to enhance MDM2-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of p53, thereby promoting tumorigenesis. Beyond its canonical role in inhibiting p53 activity, recent studies have revealed diverse p53-independent functions. MDM4 interacts with various proteins, including p73, E2F1, casein kinase 1α, PPARα, and TRIM21 to regulate cell cycle progression, β-catenin-mediated pre-leukemic progression, and ferroptosis independent of p53. In addition, MDM4 functions independently of both p53 and MDM2 by interacting with proteins, such as SMAD family members 3/4, retinoblastoma protein (pRB), p21, …

BACKGROUND: High-volume endurance training may shift exercise from cardioprotective to arrhythmogenic, increasing the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in healthy athletes.
CASE SUMMARY: A 38-year-old marathon runner with a 15-year history of high-intensity endurance training presented with episodic palpitations and reduced athletic performance. Electrocardiogram showed paroxysmal AF; echocardiography revealed mild left atrial enlargement without structural heart disease. Symptoms worsened during the recovery phase after runs, suggesting vagally mediated AF. After unsuccessful flecainide therapy, he underwent pulmonary vein isolation. Twelve months later, he remained free of recurrent AF on Holter monitoring and successfully resumed endurance training following an 8-week recovery period. …

This study aimed to examine the bioethanol yield potential of varying ratios of Jicama (J) and Footstool Palm Stalk (FPS). The prototype used a mixed feedstock approach and was developed using the Separate Hydrolysis and Fermentation (SHF) method to extract and ferment sugars to produce ethanol. The study measured bioethanol yields by employing a posttest-only controlled group design consisting of a negative control group and three experimental groups. The results demonstrated that Experimental 3 exhibited the highest average initial sugar yield (3.71g), while the Negative Control showed the lowest average initial sugar (1.5g), showing the high sugar potential of Experimental …
