Effect Of The Virtual Simulation Paired Prebriefing-Debriefing Strategy On Nursing Students' Self-Efficacy Perceptions And Virtual Simulation Performance In The Care Of Patients Experiencing A Myocardial Infarction, Laura M. Penalo Jan 2023

Effect Of The Virtual Simulation Paired Prebriefing-Debriefing Strategy On Nursing Students' Self-Efficacy Perceptions And Virtual Simulation Performance In The Care Of Patients Experiencing A Myocardial Infarction, Laura M. Penalo

Dissertations

Through the use of virtual simulations (VS) in nursing education, nursing students are exposed to a variety of clinical scenarios that may potentially improve their learning of competencies, increase their self-efficacy, and enhance their future clinical performance. Despite limited quantitative research incorporating evidence-based strategies such as prebriefing and debriefing as part of the VS experience, this educational technology continues to gain popularity. In 2020, the use of VS in the nursing curriculum exponentially increased when the global COVID-19 pandemic impacted traditional in-person clinicals, laboratory, and human patient simulation (HPS) experiences. Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs have benefited from the use …

Needs Assessment And Mentor Program Development For A Midwestern University, Mindy Thompson Jan 2023

Needs Assessment And Mentor Program Development For A Midwestern University, Mindy Thompson

DNP and Student Works

An estimated 1.13 million new registered nurses are needed to fill new jobs and replace retiring nurses from 2012-2022. However, the nurse faculty shortage is a primary barrier to expanding the nursing workforce over the next decade (AACN, 2005; AACN, 2015). Nurses moving from the clinical setting to the academic setting need preparation, professional growth, and the development of a social network to make the transition a lasting one (Schoening, 2013). Not only do mentoring relationships improve the work environment, but there is also an indication that it improves organizational commitment by achieving a sense of accomplishment, autonomy in their …

A Wide-Angle Approach To Improving Family Life And Parenting In Ireland: A Family Life Education Framework, Colm O'Doherty, Ashling Jackson

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article explores the contemporary challenges of parenting, particularly those grounded in social stress, and those stemming from wider cultural sources and modernity. Current family and parenting support provision in Ireland are reviewed. A case is made for the development and implementation of a new integrated model of service delivery: A Family Life Education (FLE) framework. Key Family Life Education practice skills grounded in foundational principles are outlined and a 5-stage model to creating and implementing a Family Life Education framework in Ireland is proposed. As a policy option following a period of heightened social stress and economic duress due …

The Influence Of Covid-19 On Tobacco Racial Health Disparities: Testing The Differential Effects Of Covid-19 On Smoking Motivation Variables Across Black And White Smokers, Patricia F. Calixte-Civil Jan 2023

The Influence Of Covid-19 On Tobacco Racial Health Disparities: Testing The Differential Effects Of Covid-19 On Smoking Motivation Variables Across Black And White Smokers, Patricia F. Calixte-Civil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated persistent racial differences in access and quality of healthcare resources that result in disproportionately poor health outcomes for Black and African Americans, relative to Whites. Given COVID-19’s influence on racial health disparities broadly, examination is warranted on whether the pandemic has more specificallyinfluenced smoking motivation and, subsequently, tobacco-related health disparities. The goal of this study was to test whether COVID-19 related video content differentially primed smoking motivation (cravings, cessation self-efficacy, and motivation to quit) among Black and White smokers. I used an online research platform to host an experiment with a 2x3 between-subjects factorial design …

Practical Implementation Of The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment To Optimise Care For Older Adults With Cancer, Patricia Schofield, Philip R. Debruyne

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Whilst cancer remains a very serious health problem at any stage, cancer combined with increasing age creates an even more challenging situation for health care providers. Age is the principal non-modifiable risk factor for all cancer types. There is a rising incidence of cancer among older adults worldwide. In Belgium, the highest incidence rate is situated in the 80–84 age group [1]. In 2020, 60% of women and 70% of men in Belgium were aged 65 years or older when diagnosed, an increase of 6% for both sexes compared to 2010 [1]. Older adults with cancer can be a vulnerable …

Quantifying The Econometric Loss Of A Cyber-Physical Attack On A Seaport, Kimberly Tam, Barbara Chang, Rory Hopcraft, Kemedi Moara-Nkwe, Kevin Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Modern Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) show increasing levels of automation, intelligence, and optimization capabilities. Both creators and adopters of these technologies emphasize the benefits: safety, cost-savings, and efficiencies. Existing literature under-represents the potential risks associated with the adoption of individually complex systems and interconnected Systems-of-Systems (SoS). Research primarily focuses on the potential benefits, and many recent deployments of new technology have received little rigorous scrutiny. The studies that do explore issues, such as cyber-attacks on CPS, often lack an analysis of the potential impact based on the way cyber-physical risks are communicated. Due to high levels of interaction and inter dependencies …

Geers, Lauren Kramer, Kelly S. Clemens, Keenan A. Pituch, Ben Colagiuri, Hilary A. Marusak, Christine A. Rabinak, Natalie Turner, Michael Nedley

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Background

Evidence suggests that dental anxiety and phobia are frequently the result of direct associative fear conditioning but that pre-exposure to dental stimuli prior to conditioning results in latent inhibition of fear learning. The mechanisms underlying the pre-exposure effect in humans, however, are poorly understood. Moreover, pain sensitivity has been linked to dental fear conditioning in correlational investigations and theory suggests it may moderate the latent inhibition effect, but this hypothesis has not been directly tested. These gaps in our understanding are a barrier to the development of evidence-based dental phobia prevention efforts.

Emerald ash borer (Order: Coleoptera: Family Buprestidae) (EAB) is an invasive wood-boring insect that infects the true ash species (Fraxinus spp.). EAB is native to parts of China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and small areas of Russia and Mongolia. EAB was first discovered in North America in June 2002 near Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and is thought to have arrived to North America via infested wood packing material. EAB is generally established in an area for several years before it is detected and can spread over large areas through active flight and human-mediated dispersal.

Background: Previous studies have confirmed that preoperative nutritional-inflammatory indicators can predict prognosis in various malignancies. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the assessment of systemic inflammatory immunity index (SII) combined with prognostic nutritional index (PNI) scores to predict prognosis after neoadjuvant treatment with imatinib in locally advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumours (LA-GIST). The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of pretreatment SII-PNI scores in predicting recurrence after neoadjuvant therapy with imatinib in patients with LA-GIST.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 57 patients with LA-GIST who received imatinib neoadjuvant from January 2013 to March …

Consequences And The Supreme Court, Aaron Tang Jan 2023

Consequences And The Supreme Court, Aaron Tang

Northwestern University Law Review

May the Supreme Court consider consequences when it decides the hard cases that divide us? The conventional wisdom is that it may not. Scholars have argued, for example, that consequentialism is a paradigmatic “anti-modal” form of reasoning at the Court. And the Court itself has declared that “consequences cannot change our understanding of the law.”

This Article presents evidence of a possible shift in the standard account. Although many kinds of consequentialist arguments remain forbidden, such as naked judicial efforts to maximize social utility, a particular form of consequentialism is now surprisingly common when the Supreme Court confronts hard cases. …

The Qualitative Report

It is difficult to maintain social distancing in highly populated areas where people live in proximity. This study aimed to qualitatively explore experiences of COVID-19 recovered patients residing in one such area. We employed semi-structured face-to-face interviews. An interview guide was developed, validated, piloted, and minor changes were made. People living in this area, above 18 years of age, and recovered from COVID-19 were approached for the interviews, 11 of them were recruited to be interviewed, and their verbal informed consent was audio recorded. The interviews were conducted in the Arabic language in a semi-private area of the community center, …

The Counterdemocratic Difficulty, Aziz Z. Huq Jan 2023

The Counterdemocratic Difficulty, Aziz Z. Huq

Northwestern University Law Review

Since the 2020 elections, debate about the Supreme Court’s relationship with the mechanisms of national democracy has intensified. One important thread of that debate focuses critically on the possibility of a judicial decision flipping a presidential election or thwarting the will of national majorities respecting progressive legislation, and pushes concerns about the Court’s effect on national democracy. A narrow focus on specific interventions, however, does not exhaust the subtle and consequential ways in which the Court influences whether and how the American democratic system thrives or fails. A narrow focus is partial because it construes democracy as merely the aggregation …

Defining Interim Storage Of Nuclear Waste, Max Johnson Jan 2023

Defining Interim Storage Of Nuclear Waste, Max Johnson

Northwestern University Law Review

Nuclear power may be humanity’s best hope to curb climate-altering greenhouse gas emissions. But public fear of its dangers, including the toxicity of nuclear waste, undermines its expansion. To provide for more effective waste disposal, in 2021 and 2022 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recommended licensing two privately-owned nuclear waste storage facilities—called Consolidated Interim Storage Facilities (CISFs)—to be built in New Mexico and in Texas. Both states vehemently oppose the construction and operation of these facilities: legislators in both states have proposed state laws opposing them, and both states have sued the NRC challenging the legality of the facilities’ licensure. …

Predictors Of Neurological Complications Of Pediatric Post-Cardiotomy Extracorporeal Life Support, Hala Mounir Agha, Amr Fathalla, Giuseppe Isgro, Mauro Cotza

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Background: Post-cardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was associated with significant neurological complications affecting the overall outcome. The aim of the work is to determine the incidence and the predictors of neurological events during pediatric extracorporeal life support after cardiac surgery. Patients & Methods: This is a retrospective study that encompassed all neonates, infants, and children (<18 years of age) who need extracorporeal life support following cardiac surgery between January 2015 and December 2018 at San Donato Hospital, Italy. Data as regards surgical procedure of congenital heart disease, in-hospital mortality, length of ECMO, hospital stay durations, short-term neurological ECMO complications and outcome were analyzed. Results: The sixty-three patients who received post-cardiotomy ECMO, Neurological complications were evident in 31.7% in the form of ischemic stroke in 17.5% and hemorrhagic stroke in 11.1%. By multivariable analysis, the older age of cyanotic cases, the need for a venting cannula, and the rapid CO2 drop in the first 24 h were the most independent risk factors for neurological complications. Prolonged ECMO support and hospital stay duration were associated with neurological sequelae. Conclusion: Neurological complications either ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes were common during pediatric postcardiotomy ECMO and were significantly related to prolonged ECMO support and hospital stay. Predictors of these neurological sequelae are the older cyanotic cases, the need for a venting cannula, the oxygenator thrombosis, and the rapid CO2 drop in the first 24 h of ECMO.

Controls Of Physical Drivers On The Formation And Toxicity Of Harmful Cyanobacteria Blooms (Cyanohabs), Courtney N. Hammond Jan 2023

Controls Of Physical Drivers On The Formation And Toxicity Of Harmful Cyanobacteria Blooms (Cyanohabs), Courtney N. Hammond

LSU Master's Theses

Estuaries within the Gulf of Mexico are exhibiting profound alterations due to climatic changes and the implementation of coastal restoration activities. These changes are attributed to the increasing frequency of harmful cyanobacteria blooms (cyanoHABs) within Lake Pontchartrain, an estuary located in southeastern Louisiana, USA. There is a better understanding into how the opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) impacts cyanoHAB formations compared to the effect of other physical drivers when the spillway doesn’t dominate the system. The goal of this study is to provide a greater understanding of the baseline conditions when the BCS is closed and determine what …

Development Of A Multidisciplinary Clinic For Patients With Ehlers Danlos Syndromes: Considerations And Strategies., William R. Black, Jordan T. Jones, Eric T. Rush, Lindsey Malloy-Walton, Ashley Harding

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) is a group of connective tissue disorders often encountered within rheumatology clinics and is associated with several overlapping symptoms, which may require attention from other medical subspecialities. Barriers exist to implementing multidisciplinary care for EDS, including a lack of knowledge, comfort, and time managing EDS. In the absence of multidisciplinary care, patients are often forced to self-coordinate care. This can lead to gaps in care and a lack of clarity of medical ownership over the patient's care. Integrated multidisciplinary clinics are sorely needed, but the development and implementation of such clinics is limited by resources and personnel. …

While the mutational and transcriptional landscapes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are well-known, the epigenome is poorly understood. We characterize the epigenome of clear cell (ccRCC), papillary (pRCC), and chromophobe RCC (chRCC) by using ChIP-seq, ATAC-Seq, RNA-seq, and SNP arrays. We integrate 153 individual data sets from 42 patients and nominate 50 histology-specific master transcription factors (MTF) to define RCC histologic subtypes, including EPAS1 and ETS-1 in ccRCC, HNF1B in pRCC, and FOXI1 in chRCC. We confirm histology-specific MTFs via immunohistochemistry including a ccRCC-specific TF, BHLHE41. FOXI1 overexpression with knock-down of EPAS1 in the 786-O ccRCC cell line induces transcriptional …
