Meaning In Parenting And Why It Matters, Dr Colm O'Doherty
Meaning In Parenting And Why It Matters, Dr Colm O'Doherty
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
The central premise of this article is that parental choices are influenced by economic factors and associated cultural values. Intensive parenting repertoires such as helicopter parenting have come to the fore as social mobility has stalled and economic pressures resulting from neo liberal policies have increased. As a result child rearing has become more of a technical craft than a fulfilling act. Seeking a meritocratic bulwark against increasing inequality parenting has been recast as a technocratic approach to the rearing of successful offspring. Investing in children has become more technical and politicised in order to meet the demands of globalisation. …

Michigan COVID-19 Outbreak Reports
The Outbreak Data page was obtained from Michigan's COVID-19 data page: https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/stats/outbreak-reporting.
This report is created by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services from data self-reported by local health departments. Data is updated every week.
COVID-19 outbreaks are generally defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household. Local health departments report the number of new and ongoing outbreaks they are investigating by the setting of the outbreak. New outbreaks are those outbreaks that were first identified during the current reporting week. Ongoing outbreaks are …

Psychological Forensics is a very important science in the criminal procedure since it incorporates the psycho-social factors of the crime. This approach is seen as logical and necessary even in the countries where the Justice System is advanced, which throughout this paper we have treated as references and then we have compared them with the Justice System in Kosovo. Linking psychology to judicial practice is seen necessary because many perpetrators of criminal offenses end up in prison due to the so-called guilty-mind. Appropriate methods were used for the theoretical-methodological analysis, in the implementation of which the contemporary literature by relevant …

Misinformation In Countries With Limited Technological Literacies: How Individuals In Sub-Sahara Africa Engage With Fake News, Gregory Gondwe
Misinformation In Countries With Limited Technological Literacies: How Individuals In Sub-Sahara Africa Engage With Fake News, Gregory Gondwe
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
In an event where the problem of information access is almost terra incognita, the derivate challenge is whether too much information is bad. Most research suggests so, yet very few attempts have been made to examine the digital inequalities and literacies that shape how an individual is exposed, consumes, shares, and ends up believing in fake news. This study builds upon focus group data from six sub-Saharan countries to examine how people in sub-Saharan Africa engage with misinformation. This study focuses on variations in digital access and literacy, which indicate how individuals in Africa are exposed to, consume, spread, and …

Introduction: Positive social comparative feedback indicates to the learner that they are performing better than others. While this type feedback supports motor skill learning in some tasks, the effect of social comparative feedback on implicit motor sequence learning remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of positive social comparative feedback on the learning of and expectancies for a motor sequence task. Methods: Forty-eight individuals practiced a joystick-based sequence task and were divided into three feedback groups: CONTROL (no performance feedback), RT ONLY (response time only feedback), and RT+POS (response time plus positive social comparison). Participants …

Self-awareness mdash how we see ourselves and the effects we have on our environment mdash influences our behavior and the type of person we want to become. This article examines recent research and areas of practice that address the meaning of self-awareness and how it develops over time. We build on extant comprehensive reviews of the literature to define self-awareness and its accuracy, measurement, and effects, including the dark side of being overly introspective. We offer a framework to integrate theory-based processes. We present the results of a literature search of educational interventions aimed at increasing mindfulness through reflection, feedback, …

Impact Of High-Fidelity Simulation On Confidence Level Of Nursing Students In The Care Of Covid-19 Patients, Faith A. Paine
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the education of nursing students across the world. Nursing students were unable to care for patients with COVID-19 at the beginning and potentially throughout nursing school depending on the facility and nursing school restrictions. It was not known how the participation in a high-fidelity simulation will impact the confidence level of nursing students in the care of patients with COVID-19. A mixed methods phenomenological qualitative and survey design was utilized to determine the confidence level of nursing students after participation in a high-fidelity simulation of a patient diagnosed with COVID-19.

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations
This final article in the supplement aims to summarize a clinical approach for weight management geared toward primary care practitioners, offering practical advice about how to integrate weight management into day-to-day practice. To achieve long-term successful weight loss, a comprehensive multimodal approach is recommended, focusing on both lifestyle modification and appropriate use of therapy. Once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg is a novel treatment that can be used as an adjunct to lifestyle modification for the management of overweight and obesity. Key considerations are presented to support its optimal administration in conjunction with lifestyle modification, with a focus on assessing suitability …

Exploring The Potential Of Administrative Data For Understanding And Advancing Child Protection And Family Support Policy, Practice And Research In Ireland, Donna O'Leary, Olive Lyons
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
It is generally understood that administrative data at the level of the individual, family and wider population is fundamental to delivering client centred services which aim to support families and respond to, and reduce child abuse. They are valuable to policy makers and practitioners and play an important role in research. The focus of this paper is the potential use of administrative data from statutory family support and child protection and welfare services in Ireland for policy, practice and research. In the context of an evolving legislative and policy framework in Ireland, we provide an overview of the statutory family …
Reducing Tracheal Complications In Endotracheal Intubation Patients Using Automated Cuff Pressure Modulation, Shrihan G. Babu
Reducing Tracheal Complications In Endotracheal Intubation Patients Using Automated Cuff Pressure Modulation, Shrihan G. Babu
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Endotracheal tube intubation is the third most frequent procedure, performed approximately 13-20 million times yearly in the United States (Mosier et al., 2020). Despite the regularity of the procedure, intubation-related complications such as tracheal injuries, laryngeal injuries, and ventilator-associated pneumonia are ubiquitous due to improper cuff pressure management methods (Ganti et al., 2018). Current techniques, such as the pilot balloon and minimal leak technique, have proven ineffective and inconsistent in managing pressure. As a result, over 71.6% of intubation patients have abnormally high cuff pressures (Ramírez, 2014). Therefore, the purpose of this research was to design an endotracheal tube with …

Cardiometabolic Risk Factors Efficacy Of Semaglutide In The Step Program, Anastassia Amaro, Neil S. Skolnik, Danny Sugimoto
Abington Jefferson Health Papers
People with overweight or obesity often suffer from associated cardiometabolic diseases and comorbidities. Current therapies for obesity include lifestyle intervention, bariatric surgery, and pharmacotherapy. The magnitude of weight loss achieved with these therapies can determine the level of improvement in various comorbidities. Once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of obesity. This article reviews data from the global phase 3 Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with obesity (STEP) program, comparing the efficacy of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg versus placebo for weight loss and …

The Impacts Of Immune Challenges On Fish Behavior And Physiology, Teisha King
The Impacts Of Immune Challenges On Fish Behavior And Physiology, Teisha King
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
For species living in dominance hierarchies, social rank dictates access to resources and often contributes to reproductive success. To ensure survival, individuals constantly evaluate trade- offs between crucial biological systems, like the reproductive and immune systems, depending on their social rank and physiological state. Little is known about how social species balance interactions between immune system function, fluctuations in social status and reproductive fitness, and the performance of behaviors necessary for maintaining social status when sick, particularly in fishes, the largest and most diverse group of vertebrates. My dissertation research uses a whole animal approach to examine how physiological profiles …

Dr. Buker, Associate Dean and Senior Professor of Counseling, opens the presentation on the topic of self-care – managing stress and anxiety. He discusses common stress-related symptoms, levels of stress, common causes of stress, variables for managing stress, and self-care principles. Dr. Buker encourages listeners to shoot “PAR”, by managing one’s Perspective, Attitude and Response. Dr. Buker then reviews several practical self-care ideas in the following areas: the physical body, thoughts and perspective, emotions, social relationships, and spiritual resources. He then discusses the role cultures play in determining success and significance, encouraging a grace-based relationship orientation over an image-based performance …

The coactivator associated arginine methyltransferase (CARM1) promotes transcription, as its name implies. It does so by modifying histones and chromatin bound proteins. We identified nuclear factor I B (NFIB) as a CARM1 substrate and show that this transcription factor utilizes CARM1 as a coactivator. Biochemical studies reveal that tripartite motif 29 (TRIM29) is an effector molecule for methylated NFIB. Importantly, NFIB harbors both oncogenic and metastatic activities, and is often overexpressed in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Here, we explore the possibility that CARM1 methylation of NFIB is important for its transforming activity. Using a SCLC mouse model, we show …

Human bulk tissue samples comprise multiple cell types with diverse roles in disease etiology. Conventional transcriptome-wide association study approaches predict genetically regulated gene expression at the tissue level, without considering cell-type heterogeneity, and test associations of predicted tissue-level expression with disease. Here we develop MiXcan, a cell-type-aware transcriptome-wide association study approach that predicts cell-type-level expression, identifies disease-associated genes via combination of cell-type-level association signals for multiple cell types, and provides insight into the disease-critical cell type. As a proof of concept, we conducted cell-type-aware analyses of breast cancer in 58,648 women and identified 12 transcriptome-wide significant genes using MiXcan compared …
