Development Of Potent Nanosized Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor For Targeted Therapy Of Hypoxic Solid Tumors, Ekram Hany Mohamed, Wagdy M. Eldehna,, Mahmoud A. El Hassab, Nahla A. Abdelshafi, Jan 2023

Development Of Potent Nanosized Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor For Targeted Therapy Of Hypoxic Solid Tumors, Ekram Hany Mohamed, Wagdy M. Eldehna,, Mahmoud A. El Hassab, Nahla A. Abdelshafi,

Pharmacy

Overexpression of two carbonic anhydrase (CA) isoforms, CA IX and XII, in several hypoxic solid tumors provides an extracellular hypoxic microenvironment, interferes with extra- and intracellular pH regulation, thus favoring hypoxic tumor cell survival, proliferation and metastasis. In the current study, a selective inhibitor for human CA isoforms IX and XII (isatin-bearing sulfonamide, WEG-104), was incorporated into nanosized spherical niosomes at high encapsulation efficiency to allow for an enhanced and sustained antitumor activity. In vivo, administration of WEG-104 that is either free (10 mg/kg) or loaded into niosomes (5 mg/kg) into a mice model of Ehrlich ascites solid tumor resulted …

Tranexamic Acid For Postpartum Hemorrhage, Anna Hudson Jan 2023

Tranexamic Acid For Postpartum Hemorrhage, Anna Hudson

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortalities worldwide. Its incidence is far to common and for that reason improvement is needed. Literature is now supporting the use of tranexamic acid for parturients undergoing both cesearan sections and vaginal deliveries unless otherwise contraindicated. It should be considered on a case by case basis as an adjunctive therapy to standard oxytocin as a dual therapy to augment hemastasis.

Spoken Word Recognition Across Language Boundary: Erp Evidence Of Prosodic Transfer Driven By Pitch, Juan Zhang, Yaxuan Meng, Chenggang Wu, Zhen Yuan Jan 2023

Spoken Word Recognition Across Language Boundary: Erp Evidence Of Prosodic Transfer Driven By Pitch, Juan Zhang, Yaxuan Meng, Chenggang Wu, Zhen Yuan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Extensive research has explored the perception of English lexical stress by Chinese EFL learners and tried to unveil the underlying mechanism of the prosodic transfer from a native tonal language to a non-native stress language. However, the role of the pitch as the shared cue by lexical stress and lexical tone during the transfer remains controversial when the segmental cue (i.e., reduced vowel) is absent. By employing event-related potential (ERP) measurements, the current study aimed to further investigate the role of the pitch during the prosodic transfer from L1 lexical tone to L2 lexical stress and the underlying neural responses. …

Efficacy Of Kairomone Lures To Attract Parasitoids Of Halyomorpha Halys, Kate V Richardson, Diane G Alston, Lori R Spears Jan 2023

Efficacy Of Kairomone Lures To Attract Parasitoids Of Halyomorpha Halys, Kate V Richardson, Diane G Alston, Lori R Spears

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In its native range, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) is suppressed by parasitoids in the genus Trissolcus (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Trissolcus native to Utah have demonstrated low parasitism of H. halys, while adventive Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) have shown parasitism of up to 20%. Custom rubber septa lures containing stink bug kairomones, n-tridecane (attractant), and (E)-2-decenal (repellent), at 100%, 90%, and 80% levels of attractant (10 mg load rate), were placed adjacent to sentinel H. halys egg masses in northern Utah field trials. Egg masses were evaluated for the presence and intensity (proportion of parasitized eggs) of parasitism. Parasitism by T. japonicus and …

The Effect Of Spinal Muscle Fatigue And Psychosocial Factors On Pressure-Pain Threshold In Healthy Adults, Susan Mais, Jo Armour Smith Jan 2023

The Effect Of Spinal Muscle Fatigue And Psychosocial Factors On Pressure-Pain Threshold In Healthy Adults, Susan Mais, Jo Armour Smith

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Objective. Pain sensitivity decreases following isometric exercise. It is not clear whether this exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) occurs to the same extent in men and women. It is also unclear if the effect is systemic or local to the exercised musculature. The aim of our study was to investigate whether fatiguing isometric exercise of the spinal and hip extensors would result in increased pressure pain threshold (PPT) at sites local to and remote from the exercised muscles in healthy men and women and whether there is a relationship between central sensitization, psychosocial factors, and PPT. Subjects. 35 healthy adults …

Paternalism In International Human Rights Law, Lucas Lixinski, Noam Peleg Jan 2023

Paternalism In International Human Rights Law, Lucas Lixinski, Noam Peleg

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

This article argues that international human rights law (IHRL) at a system-wide level produces paternalistic effects that undermine the work it is meant to do for rightsholders. Analyzing the work of four key United Nations human rights treaty bodies, we show how institutional arrangements exclude rightsholders from having a say on their own interests in what IHRL should mean for them, and we are instead left with a body of norms, guidelines, and institutions with self-serving dynamics that reinforce the position of IHRL institutions and only secondarily benefit rightsholders.

Law Over Legalism: International Court Legitimacy In Lautsi V. Italy, Sebastián Guidi Jan 2023

Law Over Legalism: International Court Legitimacy In Lautsi V. Italy, Sebastián Guidi

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

2009 brought an existential crisis to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). In November, it unanimously ordered Italy to remove crucifixes from public schools. Backlash was unprecedented. The government promptly announced it would not comply. Politicians and social actors all across the political spectrum harshly criticized the decision and bashed the Court. Ten European countries joined Italy in referring the case to the Grand Chamber of the Court, which reversed the decision in 2011. The storm abated. Lautsi v. Italy likely received the most public attention of any ECtHR judgment. Much of the Court’s subsequent case-law was decided with …

Federal Recognition Of Native American Tribes In The United States And The International Right To Self-Determination: Why Congress Should Exercise Its Constitutional Authority To Federally Recognize The Lumbee Tribe, James Ennis Street Jan 2023

Federal Recognition Of Native American Tribes In The United States And The International Right To Self-Determination: Why Congress Should Exercise Its Constitutional Authority To Federally Recognize The Lumbee Tribe, James Ennis Street

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Native American tribal nations covet state and federal tribal recognition. The Lumbee Tribe is one of those tribes. Though North Carolina has granted the Lumbee Tribe State recognition, the Lumbee Tribe's 134-year-long quest for Federal recognition has not been successful. Neither of the two types of Federal Recognition – Administrative and Congressional – have permitted the Lumbee Tribe to benefit alongside the other federally-recognized Tribes from increased respect, sovereignty, and resources. Instead, the Lumbee Tribe has been spun around by the regulatory recognition rigmarole.

In this article, I first explore arguments for and against federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe. …

Students’ Contrasting Their Experiences Of Teacher Expectations In Streamed And Mixed Ability Classes: A Study Of Grade 10 Students In Western Australia, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand Jan 2023

Students’ Contrasting Their Experiences Of Teacher Expectations In Streamed And Mixed Ability Classes: A Study Of Grade 10 Students In Western Australia, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Many secondary schools sort students into ‘ability’-based classes, but research shows that streaming students by ability is inequitable and does not improve student academic results. There has been little qualitative research that considers students’ experiences of streaming, with none that compares students’ experiences in classes that are streamed against the same students’ experiences in other classes that are mixed-ability. The research in this paper explains student experiences of differences between their streamed and mixed-ability classrooms, including the perceived influence on their educational outcomes. The study is unique because the results project the voices of 25 Grade 10 secondary school students …

The research was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic and examined the family caregiver perception of the effect of COVID-19 on caregiving routines.

A Major Answer To The Major Questions Doctrine, Edward L. Rubin Jan 2023

A Major Answer To The Major Questions Doctrine, Edward L. Rubin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court’s use of the major questions doctrine in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency to invalidate the agency’s regulation of greenhouse gas emission has elicited widespread criticism from commentators. David Driesen’s contribution to this chorus of condemnation goes to the heart of the issue, focusing on the role that the Supreme Court has arrogated to itself in reaching this decision.

The Court’s based its decision on the relationship between Congress and the Executive, speaking at length about the structural roles of these two institutions. What it forgot, as Professor Driesen notes, is that the Court is also an …

Nursing Faculty Experiences With Interactive Learning In The Associate Degree Nursing Classroom, Katheryn M. Csonka Jan 2023

Nursing Faculty Experiences With Interactive Learning In The Associate Degree Nursing Classroom, Katheryn M. Csonka

Dissertations

The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore associate degree nurse faculty perceptions and experiences with the use of interactive learning in their classroom. Interactive learning is an approach to teaching and learning that promotes student learning with an active process. The implementation and continued use of interactive learning can be difficult for nurse educators who may be influenced by their previous perceptions and experience with use. There is a plethora of knowledge on the benefits of interactive learning with students, yet there is a gap in literature specific to nursing faculty experiences in the nursing classroom..

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The advent of sensitive enhanced culture (metaculturomic) and culture-independent DNA-based (metagenomic) methods has revealed a rich collection of microbial species that inhabit the human urinary tract. Known as the urinary microbiome, this community of microbes consists of hundreds of distinct species that range across the entire phylogenetic spectrum. This new knowledge clashes with standard clinical microbiology laboratory methods, established more than 60 years ago, that focus attention on a relatively small subset of universally acknowledged uropathogens. Increasing reports support the hypothesis that this focus is too narrow. Single uropathogen reports are common in women with recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), …
