Is It Time To Re-Think Fast? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (Ceus) And Conventional Ultrasound For Initial Assessment Of Abdominal Trauma, Bayu Sutarjono, Matthew Kessel, Dorian Alexander, Ekjot Grewal
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: The Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) examination using conventional ultrasound has limited utility for detecting solid organ injury. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis compares the performance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to conventional ultrasound when used as the initial assessment for abdominal trauma prior to computed tomography (CT) imaging.
METHODS: A systematic literature search of major databases was conducted of human studies investigating the diagnostic accuracy of conventional ultrasound and CEUS occurring prior to CT imaging for abdominal trauma. The study followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement. The quality of studies …
Harmful Speech And The Covid-19 Penumbra, Kenneth Grad, Amanda Turnbull
Harmful Speech And The Covid-19 Penumbra, Kenneth Grad, Amanda Turnbull
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
We make two central claims in this essay. First, the themes of malinformation have remained remarkably consistent across pandemics. What has changed is only the manner of their spread through evolving technologies and globalization. Thus, as with pandemic preparedness more generally, our failure to take proactive measures reflects a failure to heed the lessons of the past. Second, we argue that the COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to tackle online falsehoods and mitigate their impact in the future.
We proceed in three parts. Part one addresses the harmful speech that inevitably follows in pandemic’s wake. We illustrate this through …

The Adverse Human Rights Impacts Of Canadian Technology Companies: Reforming Export Control With The Introduction Of Mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence, Siena Anstis, Rj Reid
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Netsweeper, a Canadian company, has produced and sold Internet-filtering technology to authoritarian regimes abroad. According to public research from the Citizen Lab, this technology has been used to censor religious content in Bahrain, information on Rohingya refugees in Myanmar and India, political campaign content in United Arab Emirates, and information on HIV/AIDS in Kuwait. This article considers how Canadian export control law deals with technologies that negatively impact human rights abroad and identifies a gap in the existing export control scheme. We suggest this gap could be closed by adopting a proactive human rights due diligence requirement on companies seeking …

Digital Surveillance Of Covid-19: Privacy And Equity Considerations, Elaine Gibson, Cal Dewolfe, Ilana Luther
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
In this paper, we examine the potentially deleterious effects of surveillance on vulnerable Canadians. A wide range of digital surveillance technologies have either been deployed or considered for deployment both in Canada and around the world in response to the international emergency created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of these technologies are highly effective in predicting or identifying individual cases and/or outbreaks; others assist in tracing contacts or enforcing compliance with quarantine and isolation measures. However, there are necessarily risks associated with their deployment. First are the infringements on privacy rights of citizens and groups. Second, these technologies run the …

In the by-now familiar framing “religious freedom versus LGBT+ rights,” perhaps the most visible conflicts today in the United States, and elsewhere, concern the “T”—transgender or gender identity rights. This issue of the Journal of Law and Religion includes a conversation in print between Patrick Parkinson, Laura Portuondo and Claudia Haupt, and Shannon Gilreath on this timely topic, and their contrasting perspectives mirror dimensions of the larger public controversies. Although tweets like those quoted above (by unsuccessful Republican congressional candidate Lavern Spicer) asserting that neither the Bible nor Jesus had pronouns sparked both factual corrections and comical retorts, 3 the …

Manatees are aquatic mammals that live in a variety of environments. Many of those shallow water environments have murky water, making detection using traditional visual surveys very challenging. Side-scan sonar was first proposed as a tool to detect and study manatees in these complicated habitats in 2005. Here, we summarize the use of this tool from 2005 to 2022 by searching the available literature. Our literature search revealed that this tool is being widely used in more than 20 locations and over 15 countries. All three manatee species are being studied with side-scan sonar. It is most useful in murky …

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have markedly advanced our understanding of the genetics of Parkinson's disease (PD), but they currently do not account for the full heritability of PD. In many cases it is difficult to unambiguously identify a specific gene within each locus because GWAS does not provide functional information on the identified candidate loci. Here we present an integrative approach that combines transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) with high-throughput neuronal dysfunction analyses in Drosophila to discover and validate candidate PD genes. We identified 160 candidate genes whose misexpression is associated with PD risk via TWAS. Candidates were validated using orthogonal …

Safety Of Adenosine For The Treatment Of Supraventricular Tachycardia In Hospitalized Patients With Covid-19 Pneumonia, T. Zivan, Ramon L Ruiz, Alexandre Martinez, Behzad B. Pavri
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with pulmonary involvement and cardiac arrhythmias, including supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Adenosine is commonly used to treat SVT and is generally safe, but is rarely associated with bronchospasm. There are no data regarding the safety of adenosine use in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and physicians may hesitate to use it in such patients. We surveyed resident physicians and cardiology attendings regarding their level of comfort in administering adenosine to hospitalized COVID-19 patients. We compared a study group of 42 COVID-19 hospitalized patients who received adenosine for SVT to a matched (for age, sex, and co-morbidities) …

Do Female University Varsity Athletes Have A Greater Risk Of Injury Within A Competitive Varsity Season?, Aidan K. Comeau, Eric C. Parent, Michael D. Kennedy
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 16(6): 129-147, 2023. Previous varsity sport injury research has analyzed how acute and chronic injury severity, type, and location differs between sport and sexes, with limited research in time to injury. Canadian university varsity sport injury research is especially sparse and mostly retrospective. Thus, we aimed to understand injury differences in male and female competitive university athletes competing in the same sport. Athletes who competed on the basketball, volleyball, soccer, ice hockey, football (male), rugby (female), and wrestling teams were eligible for the study. There were 182 male and 113 female athletes who provided informed …

A Pilot Study On Cannabidiol (Cbd) And Eccentric Exercise: Impact On Inflammation, Performance, And Pain, Whitley J. Stone, Danilo Tolusso, Guillermo Pacheco, Shea M. Brgoch, Van T. Nguyen
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 16(2): 109-117, 2023. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid purported to reduce symptoms of discomfort. Individuals are now using CBD to treat symptoms of multiple sclerosis, seizures, and chronic pain. Animal models indicate that CBD may be effective at reducing inflammation post fatiguing exercise. However, little evidence is available to evaluate these findings in humans. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of two doses of CBD oil on inflammation (IL-6), performance, and pain after an eccentric loading protocol. Participants (n = 4) participated in three conditions (placebo, low dose, …

Covid-19 Policies & Their Impact On Housing And Health Outcomes In The City Of Chicago, Khushbu Patel
Covid-19 Policies & Their Impact On Housing And Health Outcomes In The City Of Chicago, Khushbu Patel
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
The COVID-19 mandates and policies that were implemented by both the state of Illinois and the City of Chicago, such as the eviction moratorium, dramatically improved health outcomes by alleviating the financial stress of many households. Discussing social determinants of health and evaluating the impact that each social determinant had on housing and health outcomes allows for an in-depth look at the overall concept of housing in Chicago and the health outcomes of low-income individuals. Comparing the housing laws in place before COVID-19 at the federal, state, and local levels allows for analyzing the impact of the COVID-19 policies and …

A Case For Brandeisian Federalism: The Erisa Preemption Clause And State Health Care Reform, Jordan May
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
The United States spends more for health care per capita than any other country in the world. Despite spending more, the United States has weaker health care outcomes than other similarly developed countries. This fact alone makes health care an important subject for policy reform. Given the current partisan gridlock in Congress, it is difficult to foresee any significant legislation in the area of health care reform at the federal level in the near future. As a result, Congress has allocated major health care reform efforts to the states. However, ERISA stands as a huge obstacle to state health care …

Environmentalism: Flint Michigan Water Crisis, Zamzam Mohammed
Religion: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
This essay examines the public health hazard of Flint Michigan that affected tens of thousands of individuals predominately Black and African Americans. This event was not only systematic, but it portrayed a sense of racial bias and environmental injustice. Not only were Flint residents getting sick due to the unhealthy supply of water source but they were silenced. Unfortunately Black and African Americans felt undermined and oppressed. The underdevelopment and unethical abandonment of the city portrays how much power and authority the city officials possess. Their disregard for the health hazard proves that they care more about monetary gain than …

Rotating element bearings are the backbone of every rotating machine. Vibration signals measured from these bearings are used to diagnose the health of the machine, but when the signal-to-noise ratio is low, it is challenging to diagnose the fault frequency. In this paper, a new method is proposed to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio by applying the Asymmetric Real Laplace wavelet Bandpass Filter (ARL-wavelet-BPF). The Gaussian function of the ARL-wavelet represents an excellent BPF with smooth edges which helps to minimize the ripple effects. The bandwidth and center frequency of the ARL-wavelet-BPF are optimized using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. …
