Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
Early literacy skills are considered prerequisites for early learners to eventually become effective readers (Storch & Whitehurst, 2002). Increasing early literacy skills is often the goal of teachers and schools, but skill acquisition can be hindered due to the bidirectional relationship between behavior difficulties and academic skill deficits. To compound this struggle, there is limited research available on the use of behavioral interventions that exist in conjunction with early academic interventions (Volpe et al., 2012). The goal of the current study was to pilot three emerging early literacy interventions: Fluency Letter Wheel; Letter Flash; and I Do, We Do, You …

The teaching interaction procedure (TIP) is a strategy that has been demonstrated as effective in promoting social skill acquisition in school settings for young students with social communication deficits (Leaf et al., 2009; Leaf et al., 2010). However, a frequently cited criticism of social skills training is the lack of generalizability of target skills to novel contexts (Bellini et al., 2007). The purpose of the study was to evaluate a TIP-based social skills intervention conducted on the playground, intended to promote generalizability through training in naturalistic settings and to evaluate generalizability of skill acquisition to the classroom. Eight students 5-8 …

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
Early childhood is a period that is marked by rapid changes in development. Exposure to enriched experiences such as positive family interactions, participation in early childhood education, and community engagement can foster healthy development and prevent many behavioral and mental health difficulties. Conversely, young children’s development can be negatively influenced by a variety of risk-factors that have unfortunate long-term outcomes. Given the pervasive impact of behavioral development on young children’s overall developmental outcomes, research examining strategies to enhance young children’s positive behavioral outcomes is needed. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Part 1 of a two part special …

The Impact Of Covid-19 And Associated Policy Responses On Global Food Security, Edward J. Balistreri, Felix Baquedano, John C. Beghin
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
We analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated policy responses on the global economy and food security in 80 low- and middle-income countries. We use a global economy-wide model with detailed disaggregation of agricultural and food sectors and develop a business-as-usual baseline for 2020 and 2021 called “But-for-COVID” (BfC). We then shock the model with aggregate income shocks derived from the IMF World Economic Outlook for 2020 and 2021. We impose total-factor productivity losses in key sectors as well as consumption decreases induced by social distancing. The resulting shocks in prices and incomes from the CGE model simulations …

Post myocardial infarct polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) triggered by injured Purkinje fibres can cause VT storms that are refractory to various treatment even after successful reperfusion or revascularization. We reported such recurrent polymorphic VT in two post myocardial infarct patients after Percutaneous Coronary Intervention. Both of them responded readily to Quinidine. We also discussed the pathophysiology of this arrhythmia and the treatment option of it, namely catheter ablation and antiarrhythmics

Recurrent Cyanotic Spells In An Octogenarian, Chin Tong Kwok, Chun Kit Wong
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
We report rare case of an octogenarian who, after years of diagnostic delay, was found to have a patent foramen ovale, and due to an ascending aortic aneurysm that anatomically facilitated right-to-left shunt, presenting with life-threatening cyanotic attacks. The characteristic orthodeoxia-platypnea syndrome and high alveolar arterial gradient hint to the diagnosis. She was eventually treated successfully with urgent percutaneous PFO closure. Routine ordering of a transthoracic echocardiogram, without agitated saline injection under provocation maneuvers, may not be sufficient to rule out shunts.
Roles Of Exercise Treadmill Test In The Diagnosis & Risk Stratification Of Cardiac Channelopathies, Kit Chan
Roles Of Exercise Treadmill Test In The Diagnosis & Risk Stratification Of Cardiac Channelopathies, Kit Chan
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Channelopathies are the leading causes of SCD in patients without structural heart disease. Missing the diagnosis of high-risk but concealed channelopathies could have lethal clinical consequences. However, the diagnosis of channelopathies is often challenging due to the dynamic clinical presentations and elusive ECG manifestations of these diseases. An integrated approach including clinical assessment, repeated electrocardiography, drug provocation tests, exercise stress test and genetic studies is often required for establishing the diagnosis. Pharmacological provocation tests may have limited sensitivity and may be associated with false positive results. Wide-spread use of genetic studies are limited by low yield, cost-effectiveness and availability issue. …

The Impact Of Renal Insufficiency Upon Admission On The Clinical Outcome Of Patients With Acute St-Elevation Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Wai Lun Kwong, Kwok Ho Yau, Eugene Sin, Kwok Keung Chan
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background: Coronary artery disease is common in patients with renal insufficiency. In acute coronary syndrome, impaired renal function is present in approximately 30-40% of patients and is associated with worse prognosis. Local data regarding the risks and benefits for those patients suffering from acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is scarce. We evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients suffering from STEMI with and without renal insufficiency upon admission who underwent PPCI.
Methods: From 1st January 2009 to 30th September 2017, all patients with STEMI treated with PPCI were identified. The primary …

Non-Equilibrium Colloidal Phenomena In Magnetic Fields And Photoillumination: From Controlling Living Microbots To Understanding Microplastics, Ahmed Al Harraq
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Colloids are a ubiquitous class of materials composed of microscopic particles suspended in a continuous phase which are found in everyday products and in nature. Colloids are also useful models for studying the spontaneous arrangement of matter from individual building blocks to mesophases. Standard treatment of colloid science is based on the assumption of equilibrium conditions, as defined in traditional thermodynamics. However, novel assembly mechanisms and motility are unlocked by pushing colloids away from equilibrium using external energy. In addition, many colloids in nature and in industrial applications exchange energy and mass with the surrounding environment thus behaving in a …

Direct and indirect links between brain regions and cardiac function have been reported. We performed a systematic literature review to summarize current knowledge regarding the associations of heart rate variability (HRV) and brain region morphology, activity and connectivity involved in autonomic control at rest in healthy subjects. Both positive and negative correlations of cortical thickness and gray matter volumes of brain structures with HRV were observed. The strongest were found for a cluster located within the cingulate cortex. A decline in HRV, as well as cortical thickness with increasing age, especially in the orbitofrontal cortex were noted. When associations of …

This is a review of the latest and seminal evidence in pediatric migraine. It covers the etiology and pathophysiology known today, and then will review treatment options, efficacy and safety, quality of data and indications. Though migraine is usually regarded as an infliction in adults, it is not uncommon in the pediatric population and affects up to 8% of children. Children may experience migraine differently than adults, and present not only with headache but also frequent gastrointestinal symptoms. They are frequently shorter in duration than in adults. Traditional migraine treatment in adults is less effective in children. In this population, …

Oncogenic KRAS expression generates a metabolic dependency on aerobic glycolysis, known as the Warburg effect. We report an effect of increased glycolytic flux that feeds into glycosphingolipid biosynthesis and is directly linked to KRAS oncogenic function. High resolution imaging and genetic approaches show that a defined subset of outer leaflet glycosphingolipids, including GM3 and SM4, is required to maintain KRAS plasma membrane localization, with GM3 engaging in cross-bilayer coupling to maintain inner leaflet phosphatidylserine content. Thus, glycolysis is critical for KRAS plasma membrane localization and nanoscale spatial organization. Reciprocally oncogenic KRAS selectively upregulates cellular content of these same glycosphingolipids, whose …

Abstract
Introduction We created a virtual rotation to facilitate the exposure of ophthalmology to medical students and serve as a pilot program to help attract students from under-represented in medicine (URM) backgrounds. In addition to the rotation eliminating the financial burdens associated with in-person away rotations, we offered a not-for-credit (i.e., drop-in) option that included sessions outside the typical clinic hours. This option reduced scheduling conflicts as a barrier to enrollment and allowed junior medical students and postgraduates to participate and hopefully further develop an interest in ophthalmology.
Methods Before the rotation, participants completed a pre-test and a survey to …

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
Statement of Purpose:
As new movements emerge and become evermore relevant across Indian Country, I believe that it is important to address and document these movements and their themes in academic scholarship. Namely, the #Landback, Indigenous Data Sovereignty, and Indigenous Data Governance movements are significant. Proof of this significance lies within their purposes and the very fact that there is a lack of conversation regarding this discourse in the scholarly world. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to increase this discourse by exploring and discussing Indigenous activism, land reclamation, resurgence, sovereignty, and #Landback in the context of the So’taa’eo/Tsetsêhesêstâhase/Tsitsistas …

Control Of Cultural And Bodily Reproduction: The Denial Of Autonomy In The United States, Peru And Globally, Anna M. Schloerb
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
Statement of Purpose:
This project seeks to look at the ways the state and hegemonic devices of power control cultural and bodily reproduction. It asks the question of how this control inhibits people's reproductive autonomy, cultural identity, language, and generational knowledge transmission. I offer specific examples of how this control has functioned in the US, with immigrants, Indigenous, Black people and other marginalized groups. My grandmother is from Lima, Peru and because of that connection, and the inspiration of this piece, I wanted to use the 1990s-2000s Sterilization in Peru as a case study of hegemonic control happening more globally. …

Statement of Purpose
Rage, change, and liberation; these are the concepts that our papers, collectively, embody. I was enraged. I am enraged. But even through the rage, I am choosing to center this paper around enacting change. Throughout maturation, I have increasingly been deeply affected by how the United States medical system and insurance industry treats patients with a Body Mass Index of over 30, as a young fem person whose doctors deny validity and respect.
