Research On The Influence Of Management Practices On Hospital Performance: An Empirical Study Based On Hospitals In Eastern China, Zhihua Zhang
Fordham Dissertations and Theses
Since the beginning of the 21st century, a series of challenges have been confronting global health development, including significant factors affecting human health such as population aging, severe infectious diseases, and climate change. In particular, the COVID-19 that swept the globe in the past three years has posed a major comprehensive test to the global health governance system. As both the last line of defense for human health and the largest consumer of health resources, how the hospital can "improve quality and promote efficiency" based on limited resources is the core of the first priority. Previous studies have proven that …

Association Between Measures Of Cognitive Function On Physical Function In Novice Users Of A Lower Limb Prosthesis, Humberto Omana, Courtney Frengopoulos, Manuel Montero-Odasso, Michael W. Payne, Ricardo Viana, Susan W. Hunter
Physical Therapy Publications
BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is prevalent in people with lower limb amputations (PLLA) and is associated with adverse outcomes, such as falls and worse rehabilitation outcomes. Physical function tests are essential to examine abilities; however, no research in PLLA has clarified the magnitude of cognitive demands amongst available tests in users novice at walking with a prosthesis.
METHODS: People from inpatient prosthetic rehabilitation were recruited. Inclusion criteria were: age ≥ 50 years, unilateral transtibial amputation and able to walk independently. Gait velocity and the L Test under single-task (usual) and dual-task (walking while counting backwards) conditions assessed functional mobility. The Four …

The Measurement Of Gender Expression In Survey Research, Dana Garbarski
The Measurement Of Gender Expression In Survey Research, Dana Garbarski
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Previous research on the survey measurement of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) often focuses on the measurement of identity, with comparably little research focused on gender expression as a key feature of how gender is lived and experienced. This study examines the reliability and validity of survey questions about gender expression in a 2-by-5-by-2 factorial experiment that varies the question order, type of response scale, and the order of gender presentation in the response scale.
The results indicate that the effect of which (side of the) scale is presented first on gender expression varies by gender for …

Angiotensin II analogue and β-arrestin biased agonist TRV027 (Sarcosine , d-Alanine -Angiotensin (Ang) II; SD Ang II), developed by Trevena, Inc. in the early 2010s, brought hopes of a novel treatment for cardiovascular diseases, due to its ability to simultaneously cause signaling through the β-arrestin signaling pathway, while antagonizing the pathophysiological effects of Ang II mediated by the AT receptor G protein signaling cascades. However, a phase II clinical trial of this agent revealed no significant benefit compared to placebo treatment. Using I-Sarcosine , Isoleucine -Ang II ( I-SI Ang II) radioligand receptor competition binding assays, we assessed the relative …
Impacts Of Protected Areas On Respiratory Health In The Brazilian Amazon, Katrina Mullan
Impacts Of Protected Areas On Respiratory Health In The Brazilian Amazon, Katrina Mullan
University Grant Program Reports
There is growing interest in the connection between the conservation of ecosystems and human health. Protection of ecosystems is often presented by opponents to be in direct conflict with human values, on the grounds that it restricts economic opportunities. At the same time, human health is a universal value that cuts across political, economic, and social divisions. To date, the empirical evidence for the extent to which conservation or land-use policy can generate health improvements is minimal. This project contributed by focusing on one large-scale policy, Brazil’s Amazon biome Protected Area (PA) network. It provided funds for processing and analysis …

Our Pearls Matter: Pcos Through The Lens Of Women Of Color And White Women, Kimberley Sheri Miles
Master's Theses
The prevalence of PCOS is increasing and due to the associated health complications, it is important to understand how higher-risk populations (women of color) cope with said condition. Analyzing current symptom management and treatment could help develop more practical resources and treatment strategies to help improve healthcare expectations and quality of life.
Ten women aged 22-38 with PCOS participated in comprehensive individual interviews with goal-oriented, semi-structured questions. A 27-question survey was also completed. Sampling was continued until data saturation was reached. The data was analyzed using the grounded theory technique which codes emergent themes with keywords and phrases which ultimately …
Supporting Virtual Supervision As Part Of A Hybrid Workforce, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Supporting Virtual Supervision As Part Of A Hybrid Workforce, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
QIC-Tips
More and more public child welfare agencies offer the opportunity to work in a hybrid environment, combining remote work with in-office work. This has raised questions among supervisors about how best to manage a remote workforce. Since research on virtual supervision is fairly limited relative to the popularity of remote work, studies are needed to understand the ways and conditions that influence effectiveness. Available research on remote work indicates that it is moderately associated with greater perceived autonomy and modestly associated with better supervisor relationships, performance, and job satisfaction. It was also modestly associated with decreased role stress and turnover …

Is That Route Really The Most Fuel-Efficient?, Mark Burris, Mahim Khan, Jeremy Johnson
Research Reports
Many travelers use Google Maps to select the route for their trip and the Google recommendation can have a significant impact on traffic congestion. Google recently added a new route option: the most fuel-efficient route. In theory, the algorithm behind this route selection (Route E) examines the current travel conditions on the available routes and estimates typical fuel consumption based on those conditions. This should include acceleration/deceleration events as these change of speed events significantly impact fuel consumption and are a critical aspect of selecting the most fuel-efficient route, especially when comparing freeway general purpose lanes (GPLs) to Express Lanes/Managed …

Background: HER2 (ERBB2) over-expression and amplification (HER2+) is seen in a small but distinct subset (2-3%) of mCRC and is enriched in RAS/BRAF wild type (WT) tumors. This subset is characterized by a limited response to anti-epidermal growth factor receptor monoclonal antibodybased (anti-EGFR) therapy and a promising response to dual-HER2 inhibition.
Methods: In this multicenter, open label, randomized, phase 2 trial, we enrolled 54 patients with RAS/BRAF WT HER2+ mCRC who had had disease progression after 1 or 2 previous therapies. HER2 status was confirmed centrally with immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in-situ hybridization (ISH). HER2+ was defined as IHC 3+ or …

Hematology/Oncology Meeting Abstracts
Background: Small bowel adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy with limited evidence to support the choice of systemic chemotherapy beyond the frontline setting. Though second-line therapy has historically been extrapolated from colorectal cancers, recent molecular data has demonstrated small bowel adenocarcinoma to be genomically unique when compared to either colon or gastric cancer. Retrospective analyses of irinotecan- and taxane-based therapies and one prospective phase II clinical trial of nab-paclitaxel have demonstrated clinical activity in this cancer. Ramucirumab/paclitaxel represents an active combination in the management of gastric cancer. SWOG 1922 evaluates the use of FOLFIRI or ramucirumab/paclitaxel in the second- and later-line …

Background: Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies with a dismal prognosis. Gemcitabine-based regimens are the standard of care in advanced disease, but median overall survival (OS) is roughly 12 months. The addition of albumin-bound paclitaxel to gemcitabine and cisplatin (GAP) demonstrated promising efficacy in a 60 patient, single-arm phase II study (Shroff et al, JAMA Oncol 2019), with observed median OS of 19.2 months.
Methods: SWOG 1815 is a randomized, open-label, phase III trial comparing GAP to gemcitabine/cisplatin (GC). The study included newly diagnosed advanced BTC patients (pts), randomized 2:1 to GAP vs. GC. GAP included …

Background: A meaningful subset of PDAC is characterized by a homologous recombination deficiency (HRD). The most well-defined patients within this group are those with pathogenic variants in BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2. In the metastatic setting, PARP inhibitor maintenance provides a progression-free survival benefit after a period of platinum based chemotherapy1,2, but the role of PARP inhibitors in the curative intent setting is undefined. The OlympiA study established one year of olaparib as the standard of care for patients with BRCA-related, early stage breast cancer who completed all other curative-intent treatment3. Therefore, we have designed a randomized, phase II double-blind study …

Background: Currently, there are no biomarkers validated prospectively in randomized studies for resected colon cancer (CC) to determine need for adjuvant chemotherapy (AC). However, circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) represents a highly specific and sensitive approach (especially with serial monitoring) for identifying minimal/molecular residual disease (MRD) post-surgery in CC patients (pts), and may outperform traditional clinical and pathological features in prognosticating risk for recurrence. CC pts who do not have detectable ctDNA (ctDNA-) are at a much lower risk of recurrence and may be spared the toxicities associated with AC. Furthermore, for CC pts with detectable ctDNA (ctDNA+) who are at …

Background: Local tumor progression is a cause of significant mortality and morbidity in patients with unresectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Effective approaches to achieve durable local control are urgently needed. Metabolic reprogramming and enhanced mitochondrial function, both hallmarks of PDAC, are known contributors to chemo- and radio-resistance. CPI-613, a lipoic acid analog that selectively inhibits components of the Krebs cycle in tumors, showed promising preclinical synergy in combination with gemcitabine and radiation therapy (gem-RT).
Methods: We describe a single-arm, single-center, open-label, phase I study designed to determine the maximumtolerated dose of CPI-613 when used concomitantly with gemcitabine and intensity modulated …

Background: The mTOR inhibitor, Everolimus (EVE), is FDA-approved for the treatment of advanced PNENs on the basis of delay of progression. The RADIANT-3 trial showed an increase in PFS from 4.6 to 11 months compared to placebo with an ORR of only 5%. Prior studies suggest that targeting the aberrant expression of mTOR regulators p21 activated kinase 4 (PAK4) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide biosynthesis enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) in PNENs sensitizes these tumors to EVE. To further qualify these observations, we queried a large real-world dataset of PNENs, characterizing the molecular and immune landscapes, as well as the clinical outcomes …

Properties And Emissions Of Three-Layer Particleboards Manufactured With Mixtures Of Wood Chips And Partially Liquefied Bark, Wen Jiang, Stergios Adamopoulos, Reza Hosseinpourpia, Thomas Walther, Sergej Medved
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Partial liquefaction of residual biomass shows good potential for developing new materials suitable for making bio-based composites. Three-layer particleboards were produced by replacing virgin wood particles with partially liquefied bark (PLB) in the core or surface layers. PLB was prepared by the acid-catalyzed liquefaction of industrial bark residues in polyhydric alcohol. The chemical and microscopic structure of bark and residues after liquefaction were evaluated by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), while the particleboards were tested for their mechanical and water-related properties, as well as their emission profiles. Through a partial liquefaction process, some …

This review summarizes the role of environmental factors on amphibian microbiotas at the organismal, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere levels. At the organismal-level, tissue source, disease status, and experimental manipulations were the strongest predictors of variation in amphibian microbiotas. At the population-level, habitat quality, disease status, and ancestry were commonly documented as drivers of microbiota turnover. At the community-level, studies focused on how species’ niche influence microbiota structure and function. At the ecosystem-level, abiotic and biotic reservoirs were important contributors to microbiota structure. At the biosphere-level, databases, sample banks, and semi-natural experiments were commonly used to describe microbiota assembly mechanisms …

Lithium-Sulfur batteries have a high energy storage capacity while their sulfur cathode suffers large volume change, polysulfides dissolution and shuttle effect, and capacity fading during long-term cycling. To help lock sulfur and mitigate these problems, we introduced halloysite, a natural clay material with a nanotube format, to disperse and confine sulfur nanoparticles as well as to suppress the dissolution and migration of polysulfides. Halloysite was made conductive by covering it with a glucose-derived carbon skin. Sulfur nanoparticles were then trapped in both the lumen and outside surface of individual nanotubes with a loading dosage up to 80 %. In this …

The absence of disease modifying treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is in large part a consequence of its complexity and heterogeneity. Deep clinical and biological phenotyping of people living with ALS would assist in the development of effective treatments and target specific biomarkers to monitor disease progression and inform on treatment efficacy. The objective of this paper is to present the Comprehensive Analysis Platform To Understand Remedy and Eliminate ALS (CAPTURE ALS), an open and translational platform for the scientific community currently in development. CAPTURE ALS is a Canadian-based platform designed to include participants' voices in its development and …
