From the Introduction

China has committed numerous atrocities against the Uyghur people, whom the Chinese Communist Party views as a threat for their religiosity and distinct way of life. Uyghurs have been forcibly removed from their homes and put into “reeducation camps,” where they are tortured, forced into labor, and cut off from their families. Many Uyghurs do not survive their torture in the camps. Those who remain at home are forced to accept a government agent to live in their home to ensure they do not pray, read the …

Arsenault, Lars Berglund, Marc R. Dweck, Marlys Koschinsky, Gilles Lambert, Salim S. Virani

Office of the Provost

This 2022 European Atherosclerosis Society lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] consensus statement updates evidence for the role of Lp(a) in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and aortic valve stenosis, provides clinical guidance for testing and treating elevated Lp(a) levels, and considers its inclusion in global risk estimation. Epidemiologic and genetic studies involving hundreds of thousands of individuals strongly support a causal and continuous association between Lp(a) concentration and cardiovascular outcomes in different ethnicities; elevated Lp(a) is a risk factor even at very low levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. High Lp(a) is associated with both microcalcification and macrocalcification of the aortic valve. Current findings do …

Ambiguities And Absences: Occupational Health And Safety Regulation Of Platform-Mediated Work In Ontario, Canada, Eric Tucker Feb 2023

Ambiguities And Absences: Occupational Health And Safety Regulation Of Platform-Mediated Work In Ontario, Canada, Eric Tucker

Articles & Book Chapters

Platform-mediated work, whether location-based, as in the case of Uber, or cloud-based, as in the case of Amazon Mechanical Turk, poses severe challenges to effective occupational health and safety (OHS) regulation. While the work performed in the platform environment is not usually very different from work performed in more traditional employment settings, the platform environment often exacerbates those risks by, for example, increasing stress and incentivizing long hours and work intensification. Regulating these hazards is impeded by ambiguities surrounding the legal relationship between platform operators and platform workers that make it uncertain whether the OHS regime even applies. As well …

State Covid-19 Policies That Restricted In-Person Interaction And Provided Economic Support Saved Lives During The First Year Of The Pandemic, Yue Sun, Erin Bisesti

Population Health Research Brief Series

States varied dramatically in their implementation of policies to mitigate coronavirus spread and provide financial safety nets to residents who may have been struggling with the pandemic’s economic fallout. These differences may have contributed to variations in COVID-19 mortality rates between states. This brief summarizes the results of a recent study examining how U.S. states’ COVID-19 policies were related to COVID-19 mortality rates from April to December 2020. The findings show that states that enacted policies restricting in-person interaction and providing economic support to residents had lower COVID-19 death rates than states without these policies. Over 29,000 lives could have …

College of Nursing Posters

Introduction: The relationship between nurses’ decision-making and healthcare outcomes is a high priority in nursing research today. Prior studies and nursing theory have indicated that students and novice nurses rely primarily on formal procedures and concrete evidence to make clinical decisions, but with the passage of time and through meaningful experience, decision-making becomes more intuitive in nature. Increased awareness of the decision-making processes among students and novice nurses is needed to improve health outcomes.

The Neuroendovascular Procedures In The Cath Lab: An Educational Intervention, Jolly M. Kuruvilla

Dissertations

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a major cause of disability. Catheter-based therapies for acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke have emerged as the latest model of care for patients experiencing stroke. Catheterization laboratories are now performing neuroendovascular procedures such as thrombectomy and embolization for stroke; it is critical that nurses assist with cardiac catheterization be proficient in neuroendovascular procedures. The project began with a clinical question: Among nurses practicing in a cath lab, will there be a difference in knowledge level and clinical competencies in preparing and monitoring patients for thrombectomy and embolization (neuroendovascular procedures) before and …

Review Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Makwan Mohammed Abdulkareem

Muthanna Medical Journal

Autism spectrum disorder is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that manifest early during first 1-3 years of life and characterized by two main clinical symptoms: Persistent deficits in social interactions and repeated, restricted interests, behaviors, and activities. However, language deficit, intellectual disability, irritability and aggression, mood instability, abnormal response to sensory stimuli, poor attention span, hyperactivity and insomnia are commonly present simultaneously but not needed to receive the diagnosis of Autism. Exact etiology is yet unknown, but it's believed to be the result of interaction between genetic and environmental factors even though the genetic basis is more dominant. Mood, anxiety, …

Saved Babies, Dead Doctors: Settler Colonial Anxiety And Strategic Rhetorics Of/In The Anti-Abortion Cultural Narrative, Cassidy Ellis Feb 2023

Saved Babies, Dead Doctors: Settler Colonial Anxiety And Strategic Rhetorics Of/In The Anti-Abortion Cultural Narrative, Cassidy Ellis

Communication ETDs

In this dissertation I identify and analyze the rhetoric that creates the anti-abortion cultural narrative and locate its toxic secrets by exposing the logics and ideologies the secrets obscure and sustain, and finally, ascertaining the strategic rhetorics that enable the narrative’s power and centrality. There are two primary arguments proposed in this dissertation. First, I argue that settler colonialism is the primary toxic secret nestled just beneath the surface of the anti-abortion cultural narrative. It is the secret that animates and sustains the narrative in service of maintaining settler colonial social order via control and maintenance of the population. Second, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In many gram-positive Actinobacteria, including Actinomyces oris and Corynebacterium matruchotii, the conserved thiol-disulfide oxidoreductase MdbA that catalyzes oxidative folding of exported proteins is essential for bacterial viability by an unidentified mechanism. Intriguingly, in Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the deletion of mdbA blocks cell growth only at 37 °C but not at 30 °C, suggesting the presence of alternative oxidoreductase enzyme(s). By isolating spontaneous thermotolerant revertants of the mdbA mutant at 37 °C, we obtained genetic suppressors, all mapped to a single T-to-G mutation within the promoter region of tsdA, causing its elevated expression. Strikingly, increased expression of tsdA—via …

Editorial: Emotion Processing In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Denise Davidson, Nicole Russo-Ponsaran, Maaike Marijn Van Rest, Angela Scarpa

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and restrictive and repetitive interests. Although progress has been made in understanding its phenomenology, underlying mechanisms for core and co-occurring difficulties remain elusive. Emerging evidence suggests that emotion processing and regulation play a critical role in the challenges experienced by autistic individuals. This special issue provides current thinking related to methods, research, and practice in the field of emotion processing and regulation in ASD, and to integrate study findings to elucidate underlying mechanisms. With a global perspective, article coverage includes (1) explorations of the neurological underpinnings …

Marginalized Populations And Trauma-Informed Practices At The Secondary Level: Understanding The Connections Between Trauma Exposure And Academic Outcomes Through An Intersectional Framework, Kirsten Hany

Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to understand the relationship between marginalized identities and trauma in adolescents in relation to classroom outcomes, both behavioral and academic, through an intersectional framework. A synthesized review of literature as well as a quantitative study using the HSLS:09 data was conducted to discern how marginalized populations experience trauma in the school environment, and how that trauma impacts academic outcomes. The conclusions drawn through the review of literature and research suggest that marginalized students experience trauma at higher rates as well as disruption of academic outcomes. These conclusions are disseminated in chapter III which is a practitioner piece …

Nontyphoidal salmonellosis is one of the most significant foodborne diseases in the United States and globally. There are no vaccines available for human use to prevent this disease, and only broad-spectrum antibiotics are available to treat complicated cases of the disease. However, antibiotic resistance is on the rise and new therapeutics are needed. We previously identified the Salmonella fraB gene, that mutation of causes attenuation of fitness in the murine gastrointestinal tract. The FraB gene product is encoded in an operon responsible for the uptake and utilization of fructose-asparagine (F-Asn), an Amadori product found in several human foods. Mutations in …
