Seasonal Changes Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Functional Feeding Group Biomass Within Forest And Meadow Habitats Of A First-Order Michigan (Usa) Stream, David C. Houghton, Erin Flaherty, Danae Sollie, Ryan Lardner

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Little is known about seasonal changes in stream benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. We determined the ash-free dry mass of macroinvertebrates within a forested and a meadow reach of Fairbanks Creek in northern Lower Michigan throughout all seasons of 2018 and 2019. The macroinvertebrate assemblage of the forested reach was dominated by invertebrates in the shredder functional feeding group (FFG), whereas the meadow reach was composed primarily of scrapers and filtering collectors. Regardless of reach, the biomass of all FFGs was low during the winter and early spring, peaked in May or June, and gradually declined throughout the summer and fall. General …

Insect Floral Visitors Of Red Maple And Tree-Of-Heaven At Potential Risk Of Neonicotinoid Residue Exposure From Spotted Lanternfly Control, Jonathan Elmquist, Kelli Hoover, David Biddinger Feb 2023

Insect Floral Visitors Of Red Maple And Tree-Of-Heaven At Potential Risk Of Neonicotinoid Residue Exposure From Spotted Lanternfly Control, Jonathan Elmquist, Kelli Hoover, David Biddinger

The Great Lakes Entomologist

To manage spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula (White)), an invasive planthopper recently introduced to the United States, governmental agencies, homeowners, and landscape professionals may treat its host plants with systemic neonicotinoid insecticides. Neonicotinoids can be harmful to non-target insect floral visitors collecting pollen or nectar. The insect floral visitors of red maple (Acer rubrum L.) or tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.), which are two of the preferred hosts of L. delicatula in Pennsylvania, are often targeted with neonicotinoid applications for control of this pest. To identify the floral visitors of these tree species, we conducted observations and collections of …

A Guide To Writing Quality Case Reports, Robert Chait, Graig Donini, Michael G. Flynn

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Case reports play an essential role in the dissemination of knowledge in medicine. A published case is typically an unusual or unexpected presentation in which the outcomes, clinical course, and prognosis are linked to a literature review in order to place the case into the appropriate context. Case reports are a good option for new writers to generate scholarly output. This article can serve as a template for writing a case report, which includes instructions for creating the abstract and crafting the body of the case report—introduction, case presentation, and discussion. Instructions for writing an effective cover letter to the …

Supersensitivity Psychosis With Acute Dystonia, Tatiana Nunez, Gabriella Meyerson, Mays Alani, Shahid Elahi, Enrique Vargas

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Supersensitivity psychosis is a phenomenon that occurs with chronic usage of antipsychotics secondary to treatment resistance. At this time, there are no standardized guidelines regarding the management of supersensitivity psychosis.

Case Presentation

We present a case of a patient with schizoaffective disorder who developed supersensitivity psychosis and acute dystonia in response to discontinuing psychotropic medications, including high-dose quetiapine and olanzapine. The patient presented with excessive anxiety, paranoia, bizarre thoughts, and generalized dystonia affecting the face, trunk, and extremities. We treated the patient with olanzapine, valproic acid, and diazepam, which alleviated the psychosis back to baseline and significantly improved the …

Juvenile-Type Granulosa Cell Tumor In Pregnancy Presenting As A Ruptured Abdominal Mass, Odinaka Mogor, Steven Feinstein, Glen Friedman, Jose Salvador Saldivar, Melissa Mendez

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) are part of the sex cord-stromal tumors occurring with a rare incidence rate that only makes up about 2-5% of all ovarian malignancies.

Case Presentation

A 28-year-old woman, gravida 2, para 1, presented with a juvenile-type granulosa cell tumor at 31 weeks gestation, which appeared as a rapidly growing mass with rupture. She underwent an exploratory laparotomy with unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and consequently had a successful vaginal delivery. Post-operatively she was treated with paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy regimen with no evidence of recurrence after one year.

Conclusion

Radical surgical management is recommended for these tumors due …

Calciphylaxis, A Case Series: The Importance Of Early Detection, Nikita Sijapati, Suy Sen Hung Fong, Omar Ansari, Subhasis Misra, Edgar Mercado, My Myers, Vijay Narasimha

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Calciphylaxis is a rare disorder that involves the formation of cutaneous, subcutaneous, and vascular calcifications. Although it is predominantly seen in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), it has also been reported in patients without chronic kidney disease. The presence of multiple risk factors, a poorly understood mechanism, high mortality, and the lack of standardized treatment make calciphylaxis an important subject.

Case Presentation

We describe the clinical presentation, disease course, and management of 3 patients with calciphylaxis and also provide a literature review. In all 3 patients, the diagnosis was confirmed histologically, and the management involved the continuation of …

Risk Factor Analysis Of Hospital Readmissions At St. Petersburg General Hospital, Vincent Wu, Sean Quinonez, My Myers, Kyle Borodunovich, Aisha Shamsi, Patrick Stocker, Bryan Fink, Steven Ferreira

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Decreased readmission rates are largely seen as an indicator of effective care and improved resource management. The case management team at St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida identified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation, pneumonia, and sepsis as 3 of the leading diagnoses on index admission that later led to 30-day readmissions. By examining patients with these 3 diagnoses on index admission, we decided to investigate potential readmission risk factors including patient age, sex, race, body mass index (BMI), length of stay during the index admission, insurance type during index admission, discharge placement after index admission, coronary …

Complications Of Cardiopulmonary Bypass From An Anesthesia Perspective: A Clinical Review, Alex Roberts, Elizabeth C. Duncan, Paul Hargrave, David Redding Kingery, Josh Barnes, Derek L. Horstemeyer, Russell F. Stahl

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is frequently used for open heart surgery and other procedures that utilize temporary substitution or support of heart and lung function. While it is widely accepted as the predominant method to carry out these procedures, it is not without possible complications. CPB can be seen as the ultimate “team sport” as it includes and is dependent on contributions from multiple professionals including anesthesiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and perfusion technicians. In this clinical review paper, we examine possible complications of CPB, primarily from the perspective of the anesthesiologist, and how to troubleshoot them if they arise, which often requires …

The Legal Limits Of Parental Autonomy: Do Parents Have The Right To Refuse Intramuscular Vitamin K For Their Newborn?, Shannon M. Isennock

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all newborns receive an intramuscular (IM) dose of vitamin K within 6 hours of delivery for the prevention of vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). There has been an increase in the number of parents who have refused the IM vitamin K dose for their infant based on its possible link to leukemia, preservatives that may lead to adverse reactions, and wanting to avoid pain for the infant. When newborns do not receive IM vitamin K, the most serious feared potential complication is intracranial hemorrhage with potential neurologic sequela including seizures, developmental delay, and …

Enhancing Emotional Safety In A Graduate School Setting, Jacob J. Ambrose, Tysheann S. Grant, Renee A. Joseph, Catherine E. Beer, Kenneth J. Thompson, Kristina R. Johnson, Constance J. Dalenberg

Journal of Graduate Education Research

In the United States, racial disparities in education can be seen in rates of graduation from high school through doctoral programs, with People of Color reporting rates that are significantly lower than their White peers. Academic success has been significantly predicted in prior research by the support of teaching staff. Our Safety in the Classroom (SITC) program was developed to close the support gap for several different, often-marginalized groups within graduate school classes at a university in southern California. Students within racial, religious, and sexual orientation groups reported stronger perceptions of prejudice when compared to their peers. The SITC program …

Best Practices For Improving Blended Learning In Nigeria: Critical Reflections On The Breast Cancer Clinical Pathway Development Course, Peace I. Egharevba, Kelechi Eguzo, Enyichukwu M. Anya, Nuhu Tumba, Kingsley Nnah, Chukwuemeka Oluoha, Precious Mbaraonye

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Although cancer clinical pathways (CPs) are standardized care plans for the treatment of specific cancers, they are not commonly used in Nigerian hospitals. Many Nigerian clinicians do not have the requisite skill for developing and implementing the use of CPs. Critical reflections provide an important perspective in the philosophy, design, implementation, and outcome of interventions. This paper critically reflects on the design and implementation of a multidisciplinary, blended learning (i.e. online and in-person) course which sought to improve the competence of local doctors, nurses, and allied students in developing clinical pathways. Reflective feedback was obtained from a mix of project …

Innovative Assessment Feedback Practices In Higher Education: A Path Towards Building Learning Circles Or Just Closing The Feedback Gap?, Mihaela A. Lynn Feb 2023

Innovative Assessment Feedback Practices In Higher Education: A Path Towards Building Learning Circles Or Just Closing The Feedback Gap?, Mihaela A. Lynn

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Considered a vital aspect of learning, feedback is usually a common element in instructional practice. In higher education, assessment feedback has been found to lack the ability to impact student learning. Therefore, recent feedback literature has stressed a change in practice to address this issue. This review examines the extent to which innovative assessment feedback practices succeed in engaging undergraduate students to use the feedback they receive. Findings indicate that making assessment feedback a dialogic, reiterative process that provides opportunities for reflection and interaction with peers can enable adaptive engagement and promote mastery learning. However, most of these affordances revolve …

During The Pandemic: A Perspective From A First-Year Teacher, Caleb T. Johnson Feb 2023

During The Pandemic: A Perspective From A First-Year Teacher, Caleb T. Johnson

Journal of Graduate Education Research

This feature article aims to blend oral impressions with concrete "best" practices in secondary education. Through the most basic methods used throughout history--listening, interpreting, and translating stories shared among groups of people--this singular perspective questions whether the conversations among teachers positively impact the narrative of educating students as COVID-19 continues to have effects that are more difficult to perceive. Without bringing the two parties into conversation, the article offers its readers the observation and reflection of one who is invested in students' learning in the context of the classroom as much as the context of a world still dealing with …

Manufacturing A Protestant Consensus: Religion And Regime Entrenchment In The Eisenhower Era, John W. Compton Feb 2023

Manufacturing A Protestant Consensus: Religion And Regime Entrenchment In The Eisenhower Era, John W. Compton

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

The party regime concept is central to the study of American political development. Yet many questions about the processes through which party regimes are created, maintained, and dismantled remain unanswered. This article argues that religious bodies have historically played an important role in these processes. Specifically, I demonstrate that “mainline” Protestant groups made three distinct contributions to the entrenchment of the post–New Deal Democratic regime. First, the National Council of Churches (NCC) credibly reframed Democratic policy commitments as embodying universal values (as opposed to the preferences of favored interest groups). Second, the NCC's economic policy arm, which included representatives from …
