Biased But Reasonable: Bias Under The Cover Of Standard Of Care, Maytal Gilboa Mar 2023

Biased But Reasonable: Bias Under The Cover Of Standard Of Care, Maytal Gilboa

Georgia Law Review

Inequities in the distribution of healthcare are widely acknowledged to plague the United States healthcare system. Controversies as to whether anti-discrimination law allows individuals to bring lawsuits with respect to implicit rather than intentional bias render negligence law an important avenue for redressing harms caused by implicit bias in medical care. Yet, as this Article argues, the focus of negligence law on medical standards of care to define the boundaries of healthcare providers’ legal duty of care prevents the law from adequately deterring implicit bias and leaves patients harmed by biased treatment decisions without redress for their losses, so long …

Privacy Is Not Dead: Expressively Using Law To Push Back Against Corporate Deregulators And Meaningfully Protect Data Privacy Rights, Alexander F. Krupp

Georgia Law Review

When the European Union’s (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) passed in 2016, it represented the world’s first major comprehensive data privacy law and kicked off a conversation about how we think about the right to privacy in the modern age. The law granted a broad range of rights to EU citizens, including a right to have companies delete data they collect about you, a right not to have your personal information sold, and a range of other rights all geared towards individual autonomy over personal data. All the while, platform companies like Facebook (Meta), Apple, and Amazon have taken …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar spine pedicle screws are the most commonly utilized implants for providing immediate spinal stability during fusion surgery. Ideal pedicle screw positioning includes avoiding violation of any adjacent unfused facet joints. Nevertheless, inadvertent screw malposition and screw-associated violation of adjacent facet joints (FJV) remains a potential complication of the procedure regardless of whether surgery is performed in open fashion or with minimally invasive techniques and despite the use of intraoperative imaging or surgical navigation. Given the proximity of the lumbar vertebral pedicle to the proximal facet joint, FJV occurs almost exclusively at the level of the proximal as opposed …

Real-Time Liver Tumor Localization Via Combined Surface Imaging And A Single X-Ray Projection, Hua-Chieh Shao, Yunxiang Li, Jing Wang, Steve Jiang, You Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objective. Real-time imaging, a building block of real-time adaptive radiotherapy, provides instantaneous knowledge of anatomical motion to drive delivery adaptation to improve patient safety and treatment efficacy. The temporal constraint of real-time imaging (< 500 milliseconds) significantly limits the imaging signals that can be acquired, rendering volumetric imaging and 3D tumor localization extremely challenging. Real-time liver imaging is particularly difficult, compounded by the low soft tissue contrast within the liver. We proposed a deep learning (DL)-based framework (Surf-X-Bio), to track 3D liver tumor motion in real-time from combined optical surface image and a single on-board x-ray projection.

Approach. Surf-X-Bio performs mesh-based deformable registration to track/localize liver tumors volumetrically via three steps. First, a DL model was built to estimate liver boundary motion from an optical surface image, using learnt motion correlations between the respiratory-induced external body surface and liver boundary. Second, the residual liver boundary motion estimation error was further corrected by a graph neural network-based DL model, using information extracted from a …

Introduction: The cocktail-party problem refers to the difficulty listeners face when trying to attend to relevant sounds that are mixed with irrelevant ones. Previous studies have shown that solving these problems relies on perceptual as well as cognitive processes. Previously, we showed that speech-reception thresholds (SRTs) on a cocktail-party listening task were influenced by genetic factors. Here, we estimated the degree to which these genetic factors overlapped with those influencing cognitive abilities.

Methods: We measured SRTs and hearing thresholds (HTs) in 493 listeners, who ranged in age from 18 to 91 years old. The same individuals completed a cognitive test …

Neurofibromatosis Type 1-Dependent Alterations In Mouse Microglia Function Are Not Cell-Intrinsic, Francesca Logiacco, Laura Cathleen Grzegorzek, Elizabeth C Cordell, Oliver Popp, Philipp Mertins, David H Gutmann, Helmut Kettenmann, Marcus Semtner

2020-Current year OA Pubs

We previously discovered a sex-by-genotype defect in microglia function using a heterozygous germline knockout mouse model of Neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1 ± mice), in which only microglia from male Nf1 ± mice exhibited defects in purinergic signaling. Herein, we leveraged an unbiased proteomic approach to demonstrate that male, but not female, heterozygous Nf1 ± microglia exhibit differences in protein expression, which largely reflect pathways involved in cytoskeletal organization. In keeping with these predicted defects in cytoskeletal function, only male Nf1 ± microglia had reduced process arborization and surveillance capacity. To determine whether these microglial defects were cell autonomous or reflected …

Liver resection is an important surgical technique in the treatment of cancers and transplantation. We used ultrasound imaging to study the dynamics of liver regeneration following two-thirds partial hepatectomy (PHx) in male and female rats fed via Lieber-deCarli liquid diet protocol of ethanol or isocaloric control or chow for 5–7 weeks. Ethanol-fed male rats did not recover liver volume to the pre-surgery levels over the course of 2 weeks after surgery. By contrast, ethanol-fed female rats as well as controls of both sexes showed normal volume recovery. Contrary to expectations, transient increases in both portal and hepatic artery blood flow …

Against God, Good Faith, And Reason: The 1381 Peasants’ Revolt In Cambridge, Reagan T. Vernon Mar 2023

Against God, Good Faith, And Reason: The 1381 Peasants’ Revolt In Cambridge, Reagan T. Vernon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper focuses on the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 as it occurred in the university town of Cambridge. The historiographic understanding of the Cambridge wing of the Peasants’ Revolt has categorized it as foundationally motivated by town and gown resentment. Using legal records and chronicle accounts, this thesis demonstrates that the crowd did not exclusively target the university. As one of the town’s wealthier and increasingly authoritative institutions, the university and its constituents were targets in the uprising—but this was in addition to several attacks on local churches, monastic institutions, and manors. These attacks against higher authorities reflect a loss …

Of Mētis And Cuttlefish: Employing Collective Mētis As A Theoretical Framework For Marginalized Communities, Justiss Wilder Burry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This LGBTQ+ rhetoric of health and medicine (RHM) community-based research explores the ways community members and queer community participants communicate about potential intimate partner selection in Central Florida. The dissertation introduces the theoretical framework of “collective mētis” as a way to analyze and discuss community communication against Florida’s required HIV disclosure laws that attempt to medicalize this and control this community’s intimate partner selection. Research questions include: 1) How do people in counterpublic enclaves (Chávez, 2011) communicate their potential intimate partner desires to others in the community including the types of disclosures they express and negotiate, and how? 2) How …

Effective Connectivity Of Functional Mri Via Deep Learning Methods, Kai-Cheng Chuang Mar 2023

Effective Connectivity Of Functional Mri Via Deep Learning Methods, Kai-Cheng Chuang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Effective connectivity, based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time series signals, is the quantification of how strongly brain activity in a certain source brain region contributes to brain activity in a target brain region, independent of the contributions of other source regions. Current methods to solve this problem have several limitations. They are either unable to model nonlinear relationships between source and target signals, unable to efficiently quantify time lags in source-target relationships, unable to identify time-varying relationships, or fail to account for variability in the hemodynamic response function that converts neuron activity to a measurable signal. In this …

Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) limits the therapeutic benefit of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) and requires immunosuppressive prophylaxis that compromises antitumor and antipathogen immunity. OX40 is a costimulatory receptor upregulated on circulating T cells in aGVHD and plays a central role in driving the expansion of alloreactive T cells. Here, we show that OX40 is also upregulated on T cells infiltrating GVHD target organs in a rhesus macaque model, supporting the hypothesis that targeted ablation of OX40+ T cells will mitigate GVHD pathogenesis. We thus created an OX40-specific cytotoxic receptor that, when expressed on human T cells, enables selective …

The hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) cycle responds to inflammatory and other proliferative stressors; however, these cells must quickly return to quiescence to avoid exhaustion and maintain their functional integrity. The mechanisms that regulate this return to quiescence are not well understood. Here, we show that tetraspanin CD53 is markedly upregulated in HSCs in response to a variety of inflammatory and proliferative stimuli and that the loss of CD53 is associated with prolonged cycling and reduced HSC function in the context of inflammatory stress. Mechanistically, CD53 promotes the activity of the dimerization partner, RB-like, E2F, and multi-vulva class B (DREAM) transcriptional …

“I’Ve Got Out At Last”: The Subversion Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’S “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Ahmad Qabaha, Bilal Hamamra

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

Drawing on Raewyn Connell’s concept “hegemonic masculinity” and engaging the critical line of feminism, this article argues that Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” unearths the institutional dynamics that sustain the masculine hegemonic discourse. This article reads this short story as counter-hegemony, the narrator of which critiques what Gramsci called “manufacture of consent”, wherein ideas and beliefs are shaped, and hegemony is reproduced, through culture. We argue that Gilman accounts for the ways in which gender hierarchy is maintained through consent rather than force, and she endorses a struggle over ideas and beliefs to create counter-hegemony that contests socially-constructed dominant ideas and …

Toxic Criminals: Prosecuting Individuals For Hazardous Waste Crimes Under The United States Resource Conservation And Recovery Act, Dr. Joshua Ozymy, Dr. Melissa Jarrell Ozymy

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

The U.S. Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (“RCRA”) contains criminal provisions which allow prosecutors to seek substantial penalties when individuals commit hazardous waste crimes involving significant harm or culpable conduct. However, our empirical understanding of enforcement outcomes is limited. We used content analysis of 2,728 criminal prosecutions derived from U.S. EPA criminal investigations from 1983 to 2021 and examined all prosecutions of individual defendants for RCRA violations. Our results show that 222 prosecutions were adjudicated, with over $72.9 million in monetary penalties, 755 years of probation, and 451 years of incarceration levied at sentencing. Seventeen percent of prosecutions centered on …
