The Hidden Victims Of The Hiv/Aids Epidemic: Women, Theresa Staab Mar 2023

The Hidden Victims Of The Hiv/Aids Epidemic: Women, Theresa Staab

Health Sciences Student Scholarship

Early stigmatization of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the US as a gay man’s disease left women fighting for visibility in the epidemic for the last forty years. By the late 1980s, women were at the forefront of HIV/AIDS grassroots advocacy yet largely removed from public discourse about susceptibility. Women of color faced a more difficult battle for inclusion because the erasure of their intersectionality muted their experience as individuals with multiple identities, such as black and gay or black and HIV positive. Furthermore, white women fought to emerge from the shadows of the media’s rumors and be recognized as victims …

The Structural Determinants Of Health: How Systemic Racism Facilitates Community Violence In D.C., Nadia Altaher Mar 2023

The Structural Determinants Of Health: How Systemic Racism Facilitates Community Violence In D.C., Nadia Altaher

Health Sciences Student Scholarship

Racism is deeply embedded in social determinants of health, establishing racial health inequities in populations of color. Recent measures have been taken to address this issue in Washington, D.C. including the 2020 Racial Equity Achieves Results (REACH) Amendment Act and the Child Wealth Building Act which focus on racial equity, social justice, and economic inclusion. My paper explores the correlation between social determinants of health, housing policies, and community by mapping racial covenants from 1940 to 2010, examining neighborhood displacement, and social determinants of health. Current mortgage lending in neighborhoods across the city is used to measure the discrimination in …

Analyzing Dei Efforts And Curricula In Collegiate Nursing Programs, Ava Biafore, Victoria Hanlon, Samuel Lewis

Health Sciences Student Scholarship

A diverse, representative health care workforce is crucial to advance health care access, patient satisfaction, and health outcomes, particularly for patients of color. A diverse approach to a nursing education includes teaching students how to adequately care for their patients in ways that take into account their race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or any underrepresented intersectional combination. Studies have shown that healthcare students are exposed to racial bias and prejudiced standards of care within their medical education and placement sites. Implicit bias is prevalent among many academic institutions beginning with the application and recruiting process of potential students. Bias can …

Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason Mar 2023

Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason

Theses and Dissertations

Women make relatively small proportions of incarcerated population worldwide, but the rate at which they have been incarcerated over the past four decades in the U.S. has outpaced that of their male counterparts. Although carceral trends show declining patterns in prison population numbers, the jailed population continues on an upward trend (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2022), studies have focused more on prison than jail. The disproportional incarceration of women is evident in jails where the majority of women incarcerated are mothers of young children (Sawyer & Bertram, 2022). The current paper explores mothering experiences of women in two Midwestern jails, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Drug-coated balloons (DCBs) and drug-eluting stents (DES) were available for treating femoropopliteal disease since 2017 and 2019. However, there are few reports to investigate whether approval of DCB and DES improved primary patency in clinical practice.

Materials and Methods: We divided consecutive 407 patients into 2017 (n=93), 2018 (n=128), and 2019 (n=186) groups, undergoing endovascular therapy (EVT) for de novo femoropopliteal lesions in our hospital. We retrospectively compared clinical characteristics, procedure, and one-year patency between the three groups.

Results: Baseline characteristics were not different except for the lower rate of popliteal lesions in 2017 (p=0.030). Use of DCB increased …

Histone Deacetylase 8 Is A Novel Therapeutic Target For Mantle Cell Lymphoma And Preserves Natural Killer Cell Cytotoxic Function, January M. Watters

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrates for the first time that HDAC8 function is critical for MCL survival, and abrogating its activity in human primary NK cells does not interfere with NK IgG antibody directed ADCC therapies ex vivo. Human NK cells, isolated from healthy donors, are highly resistant to HDAC8 inhibitor treatment with PCI-34051. Even at the highest concentration, 20uM, no toxicity was observed. Conversely, MCL cell lines representative of the aggressive MCL subtype, classical MCL, were especially sensitive to PCI-34051, an HDAC8 selective inhibitor, treatment. Blocking HDAC8 activity and/or abrogating expression through shRNA silencing induced significant DNA damage, hyperacetylation of SMC3, …

E3 ubiquitin ligases play important roles in plant immunity, but their role in soybean has not been investigated previously. Here, we used Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV)-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) to investigate the function of GmSAUL1 (Senescence-Associated E3 Ubiquitin Ligase 1) homologs in soybean. When two closely related SAUL1 homologs were silenced simultaneously, the soybean plants displayed autoimmune phenotypes, which were significantly alleviated by high temperature, suggesting that GmSAUL1a/1b might be guarded by an R protein. Interestingly, silencing GmSAUL1a/1b resulted in the decreased activation of GmMPK6, but increased activation of GmMPK3 in response to flg22, …

Accelerometry-Based Analysis Of Postural Sway In Parkinson's Disease Patients With Levodopa-Induced Dyskinesia, Chandler Brock

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, with patient numbers projected to double to 12 million in the next 20 years. Levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID) is a major problem associated with the long-term use of levodopa for symptomatic treatment of PD. These involuntary movements can become disabling and may interfere with quality of life. Our prior research showed that PD w/ LID were less stable while standing (i.e., increased postural sway) and had a higher incidence of falls. The aim of this study is to determine if postural sway properties are altered by LID via decomposing the sway signal. We …

Does Gender Moderate The Relationship Between Surface Acting And Burnout?, Cynthia Kennedy Mar 2023

Does Gender Moderate The Relationship Between Surface Acting And Burnout?, Cynthia Kennedy

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Burnout occurs when the workplace has chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors that trigger emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of incompetence. There is a gap in burnout literature on how experiences, systemic expectations, and coping behaviors differ between females and males. Previous research suggests that comparable behaviors in male and female employees elicit different reactions from their peers. As a result, attributes such as assertiveness, generally perceived as powerful for males, are seen as abrasive for females. This mindset creates an environment where females act in a way that society expects them to remain credible. Surface acting involves the regulation of …

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

This study investigated the relationships between autistic masking and depression, anxiety, gender identity, sexual orientation, social trauma, self-esteem, authenticity, and autistic community involvement. Participants were autistic adults (n=342) recruited through autistic social media groups. The majority of participants (63%) reported being members of sexual minorities. The study found higher self-reported autistic masking behaviors were associated with higher reports of past social trauma (p < .001, b = .26), greater anxiety (p < .001, b = .37) and depression symptoms (p < .001, b = .312), lower self-esteem (p < .001, b = -.25), lower authentic living (p = .005, b = -.16), greater accepting of external influence (p < .001, b= .33), higher self-alienation (p < .001, b = .26), and lower participation within the autistic community (p < .001, b = -.19). Autistic masking was not found to be associated with gender identity or sexual orientation. Participants who reported involvement in previous ABA therapy reported higher past social trauma than participants involved in some other forms of therapy such as cognitive behavior therapy.

Suicidality Among College Students From 2000 To 2022: Findings From The National College Health Assessment, Jackson Gieger, Khanh Bui Dr.

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

With suicide being the second leading cause of death for college students, research concerning suicidality is imperative. The National College Health Assessment (NCHA), conducted by the American College Health Association (ACHA) each spring and fall semester since 2000, asks questions regarding suicide ideation and suicide attempts. There have been three versions of NCHA: NCHA-I (spring 2000 - spring 2008), NCHA-II (fall 2008 - spring 2019), and NCHA-III (fall 2019 - present). The analysis of NCHA-I and NCHA-II was limited due to the wording of the questions being different in the fall and spring. This leads to difficulty in comparing data …

Mental Health And Religiosity Among Sexual And Gender Minority Students At A Religious University, Danica Christy, Steve Rouse, Elizabeth Mancuso

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

University students are reporting increasing levels of psychological distress and suicidality. Consistent with the Minority Stress Model, Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGMs) are especially vulnerable; this is often heightened at religious universities that are non-affirming of SGM identities . We studied mental health and religiosity among 219 undergraduates at a religiously diverse, yet non-affirming university. SGMs (n = 68) reported higher rates of suicidality (U = 3267.5, p < .001, rho = .28) and psychological distress (t = 4.16, df = 221, p < .001, d = 0.60) than nonSGMs. This suggests that SGMs are at a higher risk of negative mental health outcomes. Intrinsic religiosity acted as a protective factor for suicidality for SGM and nonSGM students. Religious attendance correlated with higher rates of internalized homonegativity (rho = .35, p = .006) and identity superiority (rho = -.36, p = .005) for SGMs. These findings highlight the complicated relationship between SGM identity and religiosity. This study underscores the importance of offering affirming religious spaces for SGM individuals and providing increased psychological support for SGM students at religious universities.

Effect Of Soil Microbes On The Growth Of Two Santa Monica Mountain Fern Species During Early Gametophyte Development, Chase Kerstein, Kaitlin Gartrell, Donna Nofziger

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The fern life cycle alternates between two distinct phases: a diploid sporophyte phase and a haploid gametophyte phase. The mature gametophyte is an independent, single-cell layer structure that is photosynthetic. Much of the research on the early development of gametophytes takes place in sterile conditions while research into the effects of the soil microbiome on gametophyte development has not been well characterized. This study examines the interaction between the soil microbiome and early development of two Santa Monica Mountain fern species, Woodwardia fimbriata (Wf) found in riparian streams and Dryopteris arguta (Da) which grow in the chaparral understory. Spores from …

Effects On Primary Endothelial Cells When Exposed To Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanoplastic, David Guzman Mar 2023

Effects On Primary Endothelial Cells When Exposed To Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanoplastic, David Guzman

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

As the use of plastics becomes more predominant in our environment, the interactions between nanoplastics and the human body have increased dramatically. One of the most common and prevalent plastics is polyethylene, and more specifically polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Tissue exposure to nanoplastics occurs through surface contact upon ingestion or inhalation where nanoplastics can pass readily through the epithelial layer. Directly beneath gut and lung epithelia is the endothelial layer of capillaries. Very little is known about the interactions between polyethylene and human cells, with no information currently available on its effects with the endothelial layer. Our previous research showed that …

Loneliness Rates Among Undergraduates From 2008 To 2022, According To Data From The National College Health Assessment, Eunji Shin, Khanh Bui Dr., Joshua H. Park

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Loneliness is a painful awareness that one’s social relationships are less numerous or meaningful than one desires (Peplau & Perlman, 1982). To feel lonely is to feel excluded from a group, unloved by those surrounding oneself, unable to share one’s private concerns, or alienated from others (Myers & Twenge, 2019).

Since Fall 2008, the American College Health Association has collected data on loneliness from an average of 44,888 college students in its fall and spring administrations of the National College Health Assessment (NCHA). In this study, we report the rates of loneliness among undergraduates from Fall 2008 to Spring 2022. …

Role Of Oral Microbiota In Cancer Development, Vanessa Gunderson Mar 2023

Role Of Oral Microbiota In Cancer Development, Vanessa Gunderson

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

More individuals die from oral cancer every year than from melanoma, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer in the United States. Further, the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer has remained stagnant for over forty years, which is almost unseen across any other form of cancer. This fact exposes that there is a major need to push for research, prevention, and education on oral cancer. To investigate this, a literature review was performed that looked at eight research studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This review revealed that without proper oral hygiene and care, one’s oral bacterial …

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Antibiotic resistance is one of the leading causes of concern for the world health community. Drugs used to stop various infections for years are now becoming easier for bacteria to resist due to mutations and plasmids conferring resistance. To combat this problem, new drug can help alleviate this concern. We developed an assay that allows us to screen novel drug-like compounds against bacteria in an effort to identify promising new anti-infective compounds. Our assay was designed using known drugs against a panel of gram positive and negative bacilli and cocci including S. epidermidis, P. mirabilis, N. mucosa, and E. …
