The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experience of secondary gifted students, more specifically their implicit theories of giftedness, how they incorporate giftedness into their sense of identity, and their eudaimonic development. The following four research questions guided the study: (a) What do the narratives of secondary gifted students reveal about their eudaimonic well-being? (b) What do the narratives of secondary gifted students reveal about their implicit theories of giftedness? (c) What do the narratives of secondary gifted students reveal about the extent to which giftedness is a part of their identities? (d) What are the relationships …

Open Educational Resources And Equity: Lived Experiences Of Minoritized Educators, Jacob Rogers Apr 2023

Open Educational Resources And Equity: Lived Experiences Of Minoritized Educators, Jacob Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

Open educational resources (OER) have been heralded for their ability to provide educational equality amongst learners worldwide. While this possibility offers to transform the availability of educational materials with only very specific limitations (devices, bandwidth, and ability to engage), it is seriously noted that the production of OER is typically sourced from the same homogenous sources as traditionally published texts (e.g., white males at elite universities in the U.S.). Additionally, while there are emboldened strides towards equality (equal access to materials), there remains an educational gap providing educational equity (equal opportunity to succeed) in the design as well as the …

Reproductive Healthcare For Incarcerated Women, Zoe Caldwell, April Terry Apr 2023

Reproductive Healthcare For Incarcerated Women, Zoe Caldwell, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

For years, incarcerated women have received less attention and care than incarcerated men. This problem is especially disparate when responding to the reproductive healthcare of incarcerated women. Most jails and prisons do not distinguish between men’s and women’s healthcare—assuming a one-size fits all approach. Within most jails, pregnancy tests are not administered upon admission and rely on self-report, resulting in a knowledge gap on prevalence rates. Women may not report due to being unaware; they may also be reluctant to disclose due to fear of intervention by child welfare services. Lack of awareness and/or comfort, coupled with minimal healthcare options, …

The Impact Of Virtual Reality Simulation Within Nursing Programs, Lauren Forck Apr 2023

The Impact Of Virtual Reality Simulation Within Nursing Programs, Lauren Forck

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

With advancing technologies, healthcare practices are evolving and improving all the time. When the goal is to keep up with these constantly changing practices, nursing programs are regularly reviewing the latest research to ensure that they are up to date when it comes to clinical experiences. In addition, nursing shortages, which in turn cause nurse educator and clinical site shortages, force simulation and other practical experiences to become more prevalent. One type of simulation that is small but still growing is virtual reality (Aebersold, 2018). With the addition of virtual reality simulations in nursing programs, students can feel more prepared …

The Comprehensive Needs Assessment Of Ipv Victims In Rural Communities, Ziwei Qi

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

A needs assessment for victims of gender-based violence (GBV) is a process of identifying the specific needs and requirements of survivors of GBV. This includes understanding their physical, psychological, social, and economic needs and the services and support systems available/unavailable to them. A statewide survey was conducted to measure the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding the needs of individuals who have experienced violence and abuse. To measure the service needs from stakeholders who are directly and indirectly working with survivors, it will be insightful for researchers to identify the scope and nature of GBV, gaps in existing services, best practices …

Virtual And Mixed Reality Simulations Effectiveness On Learning Outcomes, Mark Russell Apr 2023

Virtual And Mixed Reality Simulations Effectiveness On Learning Outcomes, Mark Russell

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) simulation labs have increased in the past few years in nursing programs across the globe. Traditional simulation methods are still being utilized. While VR, MR and traditional simulations have evidence of successfully meeting the learning outcome of knowledge acquisition, VR and MR simulations have higher student engagement and overall satisfaction outcomes. Results show that while traditional methods should still be utilized, VR and MR encourage positive student engagement and supplement traditional simulations. Future research should include cost effectiveness of VR and MR, and also timeliness of educators’ mastery of the equipment.

Bat Activity At Mcconnell Air Force Base Versus Nearby Parks In Wichita, Ks., Michaela Sielaff

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Bats are bioindicators of the communities to which they belong, giving researchers insight into the overall health of those ecosystems. Bats are also very adaptable and are capable of tolerating urbanization. Some species, such as Lasiurus borealis and Lasionycteris noctivagans may even benefit from adjacent industrial and commercial land use, although this is not the case for all bat species. In 2021, we began acoustic and mist net surveys of bats at McConnell Air Force Base (MAFB, or “base”) in Wichita, KS. However, no bats were captured or seen during mist net surveys, although some were detected acoustically over a …

Herein, we present a dataset based on the RNA-Seq analysis of liver tissue from bovine female fetuses at day 83 of gestation. The findings were reported in the main article, “Periconceptual maternal nutrition affects fetal liver programming of energy- and lipid-related genes”[1] . These data were generated to investigate the effects of periconceptual maternal vitamin and mineral supplementation and rates of body weight gain on the transcript abundance of genes associated with fetal hepatic metabolism and function. To this end, crossbred Angus beef heifers ( n = 35) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 ×2 …

The Effect Of Income On Daily Physical Activity Levels In Americans, Jacob Foster

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

I analyze the relationship between income range and exercise level. The data that I have selected for this project was obtained from the Health Information National Trends Survey website. The specific question that the respondents were asked was, “In a typical week, how many days do you do any physical activity or exercise of at least moderate intensity, such as brisk walking, bicycling at a regular pace, swimming at a regular pace, and heavy gardening?”. My thoughts when determining my research topic were that individuals who are in the higher income brackets would respond to the survey indicating that they …

Online Stories Empowering Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Transgender And Nonbinary Communities, Myles Barrett Apr 2023

Online Stories Empowering Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Transgender And Nonbinary Communities, Myles Barrett

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

The mental and physical health issues of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Transgender and Nonbinary (TNB) communities have been neglected for far too long. The risk of suicide and mental and physical health issues in Deaf and Hard of Hearing TNB communities is alarmingly high due to issues surrounding family life, school, healthcare, lack of accessibility, and anti-trans legislation. Research indicates that social support shown through positive representation, encouraging interactions, and accessible resources within one’s community can act as a buffer against the mental health issues that Deaf and Hard of Hearing TNB individuals face. However, many of these …

Improving Peer Feedback In Ua Little Rock Creative Writing Department Classes, Jana Jolly Apr 2023

Improving Peer Feedback In Ua Little Rock Creative Writing Department Classes, Jana Jolly

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to produce constructive feedback is an essential skill for writing students that transfers into many careers. However, students do not instinctively know how to structure helpful comments about others’ writing. Training students to construct feedback that is nonjudgmental, specific, and useful is important not only to produce good writers but also to help students succeed in other professions. Writing instructors need to recognize the benefits of teaching their students how to review the work of others and offer helpful suggestions for improvement. This project explores current research into the value of training students to give effective feedback as …

A 2016 survey conducted by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) found that 96 percent of United States hospitals currently utilize certified Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology and meet meaningful use requirements promoted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. With the increasing use of EHR, early studies on data quality within electronic health records revealed a long list of concerns within EHR workflows. The work in this dissertation applied Rule-based data quality assessment to Adverse Events (AEs) within the All Payers Claim Database (APCD). An adverse event is any patient harm resulting from …

From Point Estimates To Predictive Distributions In Machine Learning Models - A Statistical Importance Sampling Framework, Giuseppina Carannante Apr 2023

From Point Estimates To Predictive Distributions In Machine Learning Models - A Statistical Importance Sampling Framework, Giuseppina Carannante

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we leverage powerful statistical frameworks for optimal sequential estimation and tracking in non-linear and non-Gaussian dynamical models, which enjoy proven (asymptotic) optimality properties. Initially, we build upon our previous work, which employed first-order Taylor series approximation to propagate the first two predictive moments, to derive Bayesian encoder-decoder networks. This work introduced the notion of dense, pixel-level uncertainty map that is crucial in fields, such as autonomous vehicles and medical segmentation. We then extended the Bayesian framework to an ensembling scheme based on ensemble Kalman Filtering (EnKF). While EnKF represents the predictive distribution with an ensemble of draws, …

Mechanisms Linking Threat- And Deprivation-Related Childhood Adversity And Depression: The Biopsychosocial Model, Cut N. Kemala, Marijtje L.A. Jongsma, Donny Hendrawan, Eni Becker

Psychological Research on Urban Society

Childhood adversity involves a wide range of negative experiences that pose a serious threat to a child’s wellbeing. It has been consistently shown to predict (chronic) depression in subsequent stages of development, but mechanisms underlying the relationship are still less clear. Moving from a cumulative approach of lumping heterogeneous categories of childhood adversity to a dimensional approach of classifying negative experiences into two major dimensions (threat and deprivation) has facilitated the identification of specific processes by which childhood adversity can predict depression. This review aims to provide an integrative overview of how childhood adversity increases the risk for depression using …

Structure Of Anhydrotetracycline-Bound Tet(X6) Reveals The Mechanism For Inhibition Of Type 1 Tetracycline Destructases, Hirdesh Kumar, Emily E Williford, Kevin S Blake, Brett Virgin-Downey, Gautam Dantas, Timothy A Wencewicz, Niraj H Tolia

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Inactivation of tetracycline antibiotics by tetracycline destructases (TDases) remains a clinical and agricultural threat. TDases can be classified as type 1 Tet(X)-like TDases and type 2 soil-derived TDases. Type 1 TDases are widely identified in clinical pathogens. A combination therapy of tetracycline and a TDase inhibitor is much needed to rescue the clinical efficacy of tetracyclines. Anhydrotetracycline is a pan-TDase inhibitor that inhibits both type 1 and type 2 TDases. Here, we present structural, biochemical, and phenotypic evidence that anhydrotetracycline binds in a substrate-like orientation and competitively inhibits the type 1 TDase Tet(X6) to rescue tetracycline antibiotic activity as a …
