Computer Vision And Deep Learning-Based Decision Support System Using Eye Motion Tracking For Nystagmus Detection, Kowshik Balasubramanian
Computer Vision And Deep Learning-Based Decision Support System Using Eye Motion Tracking For Nystagmus Detection, Kowshik Balasubramanian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven system for detecting and quantifying nystagmus an involuntary, rhythmic oscillation of the eyes intended as a portable, low-cost complement to conventional Videonystagmography (VNG). The complete pipeline integrates six algorithmic stages: face landmark detection, contrast enhancement, background-aware pixel thresholding, grid-based vertical column filtering, connected-component cluster analysis, and centroid computation, operating in real time on standard smartphone video to extract a sub-pixel normalized iris position time-series without any specialized eye-tracking hardware or infrared illumination. The system supports diagnostic decision-making, highlighting its promise for incorporation into telemedicine settings. The …
Thinking With The Feet In The Clinic Of Psychosis, Jed Wilson
Thinking With The Feet In The Clinic Of Psychosis, Jed Wilson
Middle Voices
In his later work, Lacan makes occasional reference to the idea of “thinking with the feet.” An equivocal formulation, it first seems to suggest that thought and language can be regarded as physical processes—not occurring in some homunculan disembodied brain or mind, but in the real of the body. Equally, it can call to mind the idea of thinking “on” one’s feet, in the manner of adaptive improvisation. Going further, could we not also say that it points to the possibility of setting something in motion (as in walking, dancing, going somewhere—all the things we do with the feet) as …

A Case For Mtor Pathway Screening In Early Epilepsy Diagnosis, David Seamons
A Case For Mtor Pathway Screening In Early Epilepsy Diagnosis, David Seamons
Student Works
Mutations in the mTOR pathway can give rise to epileptic seizures in patients. While a variety of antiepileptic drugs are available to treat epilepsy, a large proportion of patients will experience refractory seizures (Chen et al., 2018). Additionally, patients with mTOR-related epilepsy may experience reduced efficacy in traditional therapeutic options to treat seizures (French et al., 2016; Hadzsiev et al., 2023; Kato et al., 2022; Moloney et al., 2023). Mutations resulting in mTOR-related epilepsy are genetically inherited; however, some variability in family histories of epilepsy may be due to second-hit somatic mutations in focal areas of the brain (Dawson et …

With a predictable job, a rent-stabilized apartment, and stellar dental insurance, still, Ever E. Whan does not like her office job any more than she did on day one. Nothing about it suits her—not the work, the hours, the team, not the break-room coffee machine. She thinks of quitting every day, but something she can’t name, but feels overwhelmingly, keeps her there. While she fantasizes about her grand resignation, she isn’t moved to act until a tragedy occurs on the job.
Hoping to do just about anything else, Ever isn’t quite prepared for the offer she’s given: to work as …

Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Inclusion In The Uae: A Systematic Review Of Evolution And Influencing Factors, Muna Mohamed Alhammadi, Reem Aldhaheri, Adam Jeffers
All Works
This study presents a systematic review of literature on in-service teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 2006 to 2025. It investigates two main aspects: the evolution of teachers’ attitudes towards teaching students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the UAE over the selected period and the factors influencing these attitudes. A total of 25 studies were deemed eligible for inclusion. The results indicate that teachers generally maintain positive attitudes towards inclusion as a policy; however, different concerns about implementing the inclusion policy emerged from the literature. Several factors significantly influenced teachers’ attitudes …

A Novel Approach To Defining Progression In Mds And Precursor Myeloid Conditions In The Mds Natural History Study, Amy E Dezern, Matthew Walter, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Patients at risk for progression from myeloid precursor states (idiopathic cytopenia of undetermined significance [ICUS] and clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance [CCUS]) to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) are not well defined. Epidemiologic risk factors, clonal changes for MDS development, and evolution from one MDS state to another were available in the MDS Natural History Study (NHS), a prospective cohort enrolled at diverse US sites. Extensive clinical data and biospecimens were collected at baseline and follow-up. A total of 1177 (56%) individuals with MDS or MDS-related precursor conditions (ICUS/idiopathic dysplasia of undetermined significance [IDUS], CCUS, and MDS/myeloproliferative neoplasm overlap) were enrolled and …

BACKGROUND: Families with exceptional longevity often experience delayed onset of age-related diseases and reduced mortality across generations-a pattern influenced by shared genetic and behavioral factors. While several studies have focused on the members of longevity-enriched families (LEF), little is known about the health trajectories of the spouses marrying into these families. Given prior evidence of substantially reduced mortality among spouses of LEF members, determining whether this advantage reflects selection, shared environments, or behavioral convergence is essential for understanding the mechanisms that underlie intergenerational health transmission.
METHODS: We conducted a multigenerational, retrospective matched cohort study using nationwide Danish civil and health …

Facilitators And Barriers To Engagement In A Virtual Mindfulness Program Among Healthcare Workers, Yu-Ping Chang, Tess Bernardo, Allie Nickel, Linda Steeg
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Purpose: Healthcare professionals experience ongoing stress and burnout from heavy workloads and emotional demands. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has strong evidence for enhancing emotional regulation, resilience, and well-being. Despite its proven benefits, adoption remains limited across individuals and organizations. Identifying key facilitators and barriers is essential for sustainable integration into healthcare practice. This presentation explores healthcare workers’ perceived barriers and facilitators to participating in an eight-week virtual MBSR program.
Methods: We conducted a qualitative study using individual interviews with healthcare workers who completed the virtual MBSR program delivered by certified trainers aimed at improving workplace resilience. Four trained research staff …

Executive Summary: Executive Leadership System Improvement Improving Depression Screening And Follow Up Processes, Rebecca Geneiveve Hidalgo Salomon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression remains a significant public health burden in the United States, contributing to disability, healthcare utilization, and economic cost. Internal 2024 audits at the project site identified variability in Patient Health Questionnaire 9 PHQ 9 screening and follow up processes, with 68% of screenings completed, 55% of follow ups timely, and disparities among patients with limited English proficiency. These findings indicate a systems level reliability and equity gap. This executive leadership system improvement project focused on developing a standardized, nurse led, electronic health record supported workflow to improve PHQ 9 completion and timely follow up. The practice focused question asked …

Navigating Uncertainty: A Deep Insight Into Tariffs’ Effects On The Automotive Industry, Gavin J. Gautier
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to address the financial, strategic, and external effects caused by tariffs within the automotive industry, with a specific focus on the effects caused by the Section 232 tariffs imposed on aluminum and steel. More Specifically this thesis will examine a comparative analysis of General Motors between 2017 and 2018 during the Section 232 enactment. While traditional studies tend to observe the input-cost effect, my hope is to examine the broader effects at the firm-level, such as inventory shifts, cost management, and risk hedging procedure. Through an evaluation of GM’s 10-K filings, key financial ratios, …

New Nurse Faculty Mentorship: A Quality Improvement Project, Kimberly B. Porter
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The ongoing nursing faculty shortage limits program capacity and makes it harder to retain novice nurse educators transitioning from clinical practice to academia. The literature highlights issues such as insufficient mentorship, role confusion, and a lack of structured support as key factors contributing to early faculty attrition. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to implement and evaluate an evidence-based mentorship program to improve perceptions of mentorship effectiveness among new-to-academia nurse faculty in a School of Nursing in Arkansas. The purpose was to implement and evaluate a mentorship program designed to improve perceptions of mentorship among new-to-academia nurse faculty. The project …

Purpose: This study examined how years of experience, social support, and resilience influence burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction among ED nurses across the United States.
Methods: A cross-sectional design was used. Participants completed a demographic form, the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Lubben Social Network Scale. Data were analyzed using multiple and hierarchical regression to identify predictive relationships …
Quality Improvement Project: Impacting Staff Confidence In Recognizing Hiv Medication Adherence, Joy Nwansi-Iro
Quality Improvement Project: Impacting Staff Confidence In Recognizing Hiv Medication Adherence, Joy Nwansi-Iro
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Medication adherence to antiretroviral therapy is essential for viral suppression and improved outcomes among individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Despite advances in treatment, healthcare providers lack confidence in recognizing medication adherence challenges and implementing appropriate interventions. Evidence suggests that provider education using standardized adherence assessment tools improves adherence monitoring and clinical decision-making. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to evaluate whether an educational intervention and a standardized workflow using the CASE Adherence Index would impact healthcare staff confidence in recognizing HIV medication adherence. Lewin’s Change Theory guided the project through the stages of unfreezing, change, and …
Quality Improvement Project: Enhancing Staff Delivery Of Non-Pharmacological Interventions In Serious Mental Illness Care, Kimberly Vann
Quality Improvement Project: Enhancing Staff Delivery Of Non-Pharmacological Interventions In Serious Mental Illness Care, Kimberly Vann
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Serious mental illness places a significant burden on global healthcare systems, increasing hospital utilization and critically impairing patients' functional status. Often crippling, these illnesses are mostly treated with medication therapy despite proven research to show effective outcomes with holistic and non-pharmacological therapies. Non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) are often underutilized in outpatient mental health settings. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine whether structured training impacted staff confidence in delivering NPIs and impacted documentation frequency in the electronic health record (EHR). The project was guided by the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice and implemented using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, …
Quality Improvement Project Bridging The Gap In Scholarly Productivity: An Educational Workshop For Tenure-Track Nursing Faculty, Britney Thorne
Quality Improvement Project Bridging The Gap In Scholarly Productivity: An Educational Workshop For Tenure-Track Nursing Faculty, Britney Thorne
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Tenure-track nursing faculty often balance teaching, service, and scholarship responsibilities, which can be overwhelming when promotion and tenure expectations are unclear or insufficiently supported. At a historically Black university, a school of nursing identified gaps in scholarly productivity and limited guidance for early-career faculty, highlighting the need for structured support. Guided by Knowles’ Adult Learning Theory and Lewin’s Change Theory, this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project examined whether structured faculty development workshops could improve faculty knowledge of scholarly productivity, engagement in scholarly activities, and perceptions of tenure and promotion expectations. A quasi-experimental pre-post design was implemented over …

Enhancing Ot-Classroom Staff Collaboration: A Usability Study Of A Formalized Sensory Communication Process, Victoria Foo, Neil Harvison, Alyson Pasquale, George Bulger, Jessica Evans
Post Professional Occupational Therapy Doctoral (PPOTD) Student Capstone Projects
Addressing students’ sensory-based behaviors can be challenging when there are no team-based and student-centered approaches in place, making it essential to create an interdisciplinary framework where OTs and classroom staff communicate consistently to blend supports. Effective communication and collaboration involve carryover, explanation, education, and training of sensory processing and sensory-based interventions (SBI) as crucial components in a knowledge translation process.

Assessing The Feasibility Of Integrating Occupational Therapy Services Within A Pediatric Primary Care Setting For Children 0-3 Years Old., Amanda L. Wilbert, Cristina Dumitrescu, Kim Karr
Post Professional Occupational Therapy Doctoral (PPOTD) Student Capstone Projects
The objective of this capstone project was to assess the feasibility of implementing occupational therapy (OT) services within a pediatric primary care office using a manualized service delivery approach. Occupational therapy is inherently grounded in parent coaching and education, positioning the profession to play a critical role in supporting families and promoting early identification of developmental risk. This project aimed to address a documented gap in the inclusion of OT within pediatric primary care by exploring how OT services can support parenting skills and monitor children identified as at risk for developmental, behavioral, or psychosocial concerns. The project was conducted …
Weakening Of Social Protection In Vietnam: Labour Legislation, Cicada Capital And Civil Society, Angie Ngọc Trần
Weakening Of Social Protection In Vietnam: Labour Legislation, Cicada Capital And Civil Society, Angie Ngọc Trần
SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using findings from a 2023 case study on Vietnamese workers in the wood-processing industry and critical content analysis of changes in the labour codes, social insurance laws and annual minimum wage increase policy, I demonstrate how the state’s rhetoric of ‘universal social coverage’ for workers has facilitated the recommodification phase, an authoritarian turn, in the ‘cycle of commodification’ ( Lin and Nguyen, 2021 ). I argue that the expansion of informal labour and unchecked prevalence of ‘cicada capitalism’ are enabled by weakening labour legislation, even weaker state enforcement of social protection laws, and suppression of civil society’s labour advocacy …
