Neuroinflammation At The Crossroads Of Neurodegeneration: The Roles Of Microglia And Astrocytes In Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, And Multiple Sclerosis, Mohannad A. Almikhlafi
Neurosciences
Neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis. This review explores the underlying mechanisms of neuroinflammation, with a focus on the roles of microglia, astrocytes, peripheral immune cell infiltration, and cytokine release. The complex interplay between oxidative stress and chronic inflammation accelerates neurodegeneration, contributing to disease progression. Microglial activation, initially protective, becomes harmful when sustained over time, driving chronic inflammation. Similarly, astrocytes once considered passive are now recognized for their active involvement in both inflammatory and neuroprotective responses, depending on their activation state. Prolonged activation of microglia and …

Protein Intake In Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Narrative Review Highlighting The Implications Of Protein Intake On Muscle Mass, Growth, And Overall Nutritional Status, Manar Waleed Simbawa, Sheikha Nasser Alqahtnai
Neurosciences
Children with cerebral palsy experience nutritional challenges that affect protein intake and may contribute to poor muscle mass and growth faltering. Since protein plays a major role in preserving muscle mass and supporting growth, ensuring adequate intake is critical. A comprehensive literature search was conducted for observational studies published between 2006 and 2025. The reviewed studies results were grouped into: [1] Protein intake, with values ranging from 0.66 to 4.1 g/kg/day, with higher intake observed among ambulatory or orally fed children, [2] Nutritional Status and Body Composition, as reduced muscle was reported in children with severe motor impairment, and [3] …

Role Of Bevacizumab In Multiple Glioblastomas: A Retrospective Single-Center Analysis, Yongrui Zhao, Yidong Chen, Leiming Wang, Ye Cheng, Feng Yan, Jiankun Xu
Neurosciences
Objective: To explore the prognostic factors of multiple glioblastomas (M-GBMs) and the role of bevacizumab (BEV) in M-GBMs. Methods: 162 patients treated for primary glioblastoma (GBM) from 2020 to 2024 were retrospectively reviewed. Kaplan–Meier analysis was performed to compare progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between the single glioblastoma (S-GBM) group and the M-GBMs group. Independent predictors of OS among M-GBMs patients were evaluated via multivariable Cox regression analysis. Results: 116 patients had S-GBM, and 46 had M-GBMs. Compared with S-GBM patients, M-GBMs patients had poorer PFS (6.5 vs. 11 months, p<0.001) and OS (15.5 vs. 21 months, p=0.005). In the M-GBMs group, based on the RANO resection criteria, both univariable analysis and multivariable Cox models confirmed that the extent of resection, use of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, p53 overexpression, and use of BEV were all factors that significantly influenced OS. Specifically, the use of BEV prolonged OS from 12 months to 19.5 months (p = 0.017). From the initiation of BEV therapy, the median PFS was 5.5 months (95% CI 4.45–6.56 months), and the median survival was significantly longer than in those who did not received BEV (10 vs. 3 months, p = 0.021). Conclusion: The extent of resection, radiotherapy/chemotherapy, p53 …0.001)>

Virtual Rape In Indonesian Criminal Law: Legal Reality Or Conceptual Challenge?, Moh. Raihan Rizaldi Sutran
Indonesia Law Review
Current technological developments have brought humanity into a new era called the metaverse, a virtual world that allows people to interact through digital avatars. However, this progress has also presented new problems, one of which is virtual rape – rape committed by players through their avatars. Even though there is no direct physical contact, victims can still experience real psychological effects such as trauma, anxiety, and fear. The main problem is there are no regulations in Indonesia that can address this phenomenon yet. Therefore, this article examines the extent to which the phenomenon of “virtual rape” can be considered equivalent …

Costas T. Lambrew Research Retreat 2026
Introduction: Results Hospitalizations involving opioid use disorder (OUD) have risen steadily over the past five years. Patients with OUD experience higher rates of self-directed discharge, readmission, and post-discharge mortality than those without OUD. These disparities are often driven by stigma and inadequate management of pain and withdrawal, which can lead to continued substance use following discharge.

Vulnerability Of Bass Populations To Our Changing Climate In The Mississippi River, Cameron Schreifels
Vulnerability Of Bass Populations To Our Changing Climate In The Mississippi River, Cameron Schreifels
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Climate change is altering habitats and damaging bass populations throughout the Mississippi. The main factors of climate change affecting bass are shifts in water quality and significant weather events, which have increased bass vulnerability. With rising temperatures and eutrophication changing the way these bass hunt for their prey, it has made it easier for other non-native species to encroach on their habitat, which has led to bass further encroaching on other species due to climate change. Given their economic importance and cultural significance, better management practices are needed to find new ways to protect them and ensure they remain a …

The Love We Risk, Dylan Murphy
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
This personal narrative reflects on the loss of childhood pets and the lessons learned through grief, love, and healing. It explores the deep bond formed with two family dogs, the heartbreak of losing them to illness, and the emotional struggle of moving forward afterward. Through welcoming another dog into the family, the story reveals how love can continue without replacing the past. Ultimately, the piece conveys the idea that although loving a pet comes with the pain of eventual loss, the joy, companionship, and memories they bring make that love worthwhile.

Aquatic Invasive Species Control: Minnesota’S Herbicide Problem, Adam Novak
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Minnesota lakes have an invasive species problem: invasives are outcompeting our native plants and causing ecological degradation. Herbicides are used in Minnesota to help alleviate the stress that invasive plants put on the ecosystem, but continued use of herbicides has its own environmental downside. An analysis of five common aquatic herbicides including, diquat, endothall, 2,4-D, fluridone, and copper-based solutions was completed to find specific ecological downsides. Sediment degradation, effects on various fish life stages, zooplankton, and other non-target organisms were analyzed. This study offers alternative managements strategies and presents a decision tree to help lake associations manage invasive plants.

Survival Of The Fittest: Extremophilic Actinomycetes As The Future Of Antibiotic Treatment, Ben Reddan, Kyley Nelson
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
The antibiotic resistance crisis is an emerging global health threat. In 2019 alone, 1.27 million deaths were attributed to antibiotic-resistant pathogens, and researchers predict the problem will worsen without intervention. Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a primary model for this crisis because it utilizes genomic adaptations to bypass β-lactam antibiotics. Although temperate actinomycetes have historically provided the majority of clinical antibiotics, recent bioprospecting has revealed that extremophilic actinomycetes represent a critical untapped resource. These organisms exhibit several adaptations to thrive in extreme environments, which results in the production of novel secondary metabolites and resilient extracellular enzymes. This literature review …

Food Insecurity On College Campus, Erika Islao, Izzy Green, Rachel Stone, Ariana Messer
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Food Insecurity can affect certain groups more than others. At the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University we've observed it in international students, student-athletes, and those without transportation. Although CSBSJU offers several dining options, it can still be difficult for students to access meals due to limited availability during breaks, limited dining hours for student-athletes, and transportation barriers. This paper examines how food insecurity and nutrition insecurity impact students’ overall well-being while also exploring how these challenges appear within the CSBSJU community. Research shows that students experiencing food insecurity often report higher stress levels, and lower academic engagement. …
