The Social Clerisy: Conservative Political Philosophy As A Philosophy Of Pluralism And The Social Group, Luke C. Sheahan Jan 2024

The Social Clerisy: Conservative Political Philosophy As A Philosophy Of Pluralism And The Social Group, Luke C. Sheahan

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

Conservative political philosophers should be counted among, as Nisbet writes, “those thinkers who have resisted the appeal of the One, the unitary and monistic, and have found not merely reality but freedom and justice and equity to lie in plurality.” They should take as their starting point Nisbet’s tradition of the plural community. Given our place in history, following the increasing alienation and decline of social groups chronicled by Putnam and others, conservatives should feel free to pillage the ideas of pluralist thinkers outside the conservative tradition. Nisbet admits repeatedly throughout the decades of his long career that there seems …

Doc 2023-02 (Amended) Students' Academic Rights And Responsibilities, University Of Dayton. Student Academic Policies Committee

Senate Documents

Action: Legislative Authority

Revised 19 January 2024; Approved 24 February 2023

When the Senate amended the “Students’ Academic Rights and Responsibilities” section of the Faculty Handbook in early 2023 with legislation 2023-02, the Senate left unchanged 6.A.4 of that document on “Disclosure of Information.” It is only that section that stands in tension with university-wide FERPA policy.

The university-wide FERPA policy has developed since 6.A.4 was written in the Faculty Handbook. Unintentionally, SAPC reinforced an outdated policy upon putting forth DOC 2023-02. This proposal, then, brings that policy in line with current university FERPA policy.

Weasels (genus Mustela and Neogale) are of management concern as declining native species in some regions and invasive species in others. Regardless of the need to conserve or remove weasels, there is increasingly a need to use non-invasive monitoring methods to assess population trends. We conducted a literature review and held the first ever International Weasel Monitoring Symposium to synthesise information on historical and current non-invasive monitoring techniques for weasels. We also explored current limitations, opportunities, and areas of development to guide future research and long-term monitoring. Our literature search revealed that in the past 20 years, camera traps were …

Contemporary Conservative Thought: The View From San Diego, William A. Galston

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

At the conference on “Modern Conservative Political Philosophy” convened at the University of San Diego on September 16–17, 2022, eleven authors presented papers. They fall into four broad categories.

Three of the papers offer broad defenses of conservatism as it has been theorized and practiced in the United States since the 1950s. William Voegeli observes—accurately—that “by following their own premises, an increasingly postmodern Left and an increasingly premodern Right have ended up questioning the worth and feasibility of republican self-government.” This leaves the beleaguered Center, long the common ground between traditional liberals and traditional conservatives. According to Voegeli, this “increasingly …

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of New Nicotinic Acid Derivatives As Potential Anti-Inflammatory Agents With Enhanced Gastric Safety Profile, Eman Ramadan, Zeinab Mahmoud, Nadia Khalil

Pharmacy

Two innovative series derived from nicotinic acid scaffold were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity. Ibuprofen, celecoxib and indomethacin were used as standard drugs. All the newly synthesized compounds were in vitro screened for their anti-inflammatory activity adopting 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide dye (MTT), as well as Griess assays. The results showed that all compounds exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity without affecting the viability of the macrophages compared to ibuprofen. In addition, compounds 4d, 4f, 4g, 4h and 5b exhibited the most potent nitrite inhibition activity and consequently superior anti-inflammatory activity with MTT results ranging between values 86.109 ± 0.51 to 119.084 …

Implantation Of A Capsular Tension Ring During Cataract Surgery Attenuates Predicted Remodeling Of The Post-Surgical Lens Capsule Along The Visual Axis, Kurt A. Ameku, Caleb C. Berggren, Ryan M. Pedrigi Jan 2024

Implantation Of A Capsular Tension Ring During Cataract Surgery Attenuates Predicted Remodeling Of The Post-Surgical Lens Capsule Along The Visual Axis, Kurt A. Ameku, Caleb C. Berggren, Ryan M. Pedrigi

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Introduction: Cataract surgery permanently alters the mechanical environment of the lens capsule by placing a hole in the anterior portion and implanting an intraocular lens (IOL) that has a very different geometry from the native lens. We hypothesized that implant configuration and mechanical interactions with the post-surgical lens capsule play a key role in determining long-term fibrotic remodeling.

Methods: We developed the first finite element-growth and remodeling (FE-G&R) model of the post-surgical lens capsule to evaluate how implantation of an IOL with and without a capsular tension ring (CTR) impacted evolving lens capsule mechanics and associated fibrosis over …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bio Based Amphiphilic Molecules, Vandana Singh Jan 2024

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bio Based Amphiphilic Molecules, Vandana Singh

Theses and Dissertations

Among various molecular self-assemblies, low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs), that can form gels in organic solvents/water/oils, have gained much research attention due to their huge potential applications. Generally, gels are soft nanomaterials formed by the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules into a three-dimensional fibrous network entrapping the solvent.

As these gels are formed by self-assembly via non-covalent interactions they are reversible and differ from macromolecular gels. To synthesize LMWGs, biomolecules such as fats, oils, fatty acids, lignocelluloses, sugars, amino acids, and peptides are commonly used as their inherent property favors self-assembly. In the current scenario, interest in synthesizing bio-based gelators has …

Multiple Timescales Of Temporal Context In Risky Choice: Behavioral Identification And Relationships To Physiological Arousal, Hayley R. Brooks, Peter Sokol-Hessner Jan 2024

Multiple Timescales Of Temporal Context In Risky Choice: Behavioral Identification And Relationships To Physiological Arousal, Hayley R. Brooks, Peter Sokol-Hessner

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

Context-dependence is fundamental to risky monetary decision-making. A growing body of evidence suggests that temporal context, or recent events, alters risk-taking at a minimum of three timescales: immediate (e.g. trial-by-trial), neighborhood (e.g. a group of consecutive trials), and global (e.g. task-level). To examine context effects, we created a novel monetary choice set with intentional temporal structure in which option values shifted between multiple levels of value magnitude ("contexts") several times over the course of the task. This structure allowed us to examine whether effects of each timescale were simultaneously present in risky choice behavior and the potential mechanistic role of …

Anti-multiple myeloma B cell maturation antigen (BCMA)-specific chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies represent a promising treatment strategy with high response rates in myeloma. However, durable cures following anti-BCMA CAR-T cell treatment of myeloma are rare. One potential reason is that a small subset of minimal residual myeloma cells seeds relapse. Residual myeloma cells following BCMA-CAR-T-mediated treatment show less-differentiated features and express stem-like genes, including CD24. CD24-positive myeloma cells represent a large fraction of residual myeloma cells after BCMA-CAR-T therapy. In this work, we develop CD24-CAR-T cells and test their ability to eliminate myeloma cells. We find that CD24-CAR-T cells …

Sodium- (Na+) and potassium- (K+) ion batteries are cost-effective alternatives to lithium- ion (Li+) batteries due to the abundant sodium and potassium resources. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are essential for safer and more efficient Na+ and K+ batteries because they often exhibit low ionic conductivity at room temperature. While zwitterionic (ZW) materials enhance Li+ battery conductivity, their potential for Na+ and K+ transport in batteries remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the effect of three ZW molecules (ChoPO4, i.e., 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphoryl- choline, ImSO3, i.e., sulfobetaine ethylimidazole, and ImCO2, i.e., carboxybetaine ethylimidazole) on the dissociation of Na+ and K+ coordination …
