Electric Power Transmission System Performance Monitoring Via Traveling Waves, Lawrence George Durante

Dissertations - ALL

Abstract The scope of this research is a case study of a specific population of data representing measurements and recordings of electromagnetic Traveling Waves (TW) launched on a high voltage transmission system. The theory behind employing sub-transient TW to extract system information has been published since 1939 but only recently made practical by modern day measuring, recording, and data storage devices with sampling rates of over 1 MHz. The data used in this research are measurements of real-world perturbations on a high voltage transmission line. The published data was made anonymous and available for academic research by National Grid. This …

Containment: Logistics, Environmental Conflict, And The Legal Geography Of Inland Ports, Jared Charles Whear Jan 2024

Containment: Logistics, Environmental Conflict, And The Legal Geography Of Inland Ports, Jared Charles Whear

Dissertations - ALL

In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the supply chain, people worldwide received a crash course in the importance of logistics when corporations like Amazon became a lifeline for many. Before this increased public attention, however, scholars in geography had shown logistics to be a highly political yet indispensable process in the operation of global capitalism. Much of this scholarship underscores how the logistics industry frequently operates at the expense of marginalized people, workers, and the environment. In this dissertation, I expand on this work by adding a legal geography and political ecology analysis—a legal political ecology approach—to examine the …

The use of cardioprotective strategies as adjuvants of cardioplegic solutions has become an ideal alternative for the improvement of post-surgery heart recovery. The choice of the optimal cardioplegia, as well as its distribution mechanism, remains controversial in the field of cardiovascular surgery. There is still a need to search for new and better cardioprotective methods during cardioplegic procedures. New techniques for the management of cardiovascular complications during cardioplegia have evolved with new alternatives and additives, and each new strategy provides a tool to neutralize the damage after ischemia/reperfusion events. Researchers and clinicians have committed themselves to studying the effect of …

Exploring Novel Frontiers: Leveraging Stat3 Signaling For Advanced Cancer Therapeutics, Taiwo Adesoye, Debasish Tripathy, Kelly K Hunt, Khandan Keyomarsi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) plays a significant role in diverse physiologic processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, angiogenesis, and survival. STAT3 activation via phosphorylation of tyrosine and serine residues is a complex and tightly regulated process initiated by upstream signaling pathways with ligand binding to receptor and non-receptor-linked kinases. Through downstream deregulation of target genes, aberrations in STAT3 activation are implicated in tumorigenesis, metastasis, and recurrence in multiple cancers. While there have been extensive efforts to develop direct and indirect STAT3 inhibitors using novel drugs as a therapeutic strategy, direct clinical application remains in evolution. In this …

Parp Inhibitors In Prostate Cancer – Understanding The Current Landscape, Karine Tawagi, Mia Schmolze, Brandon Nguyen, Aaron A. Laviana, Natalie Reizine

School of Medicine Publications

Poly (ADP [adenosine diphosphate]-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) are a current standard of care treatment option for patients with metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), defined as prostate cancers that continue to progress despite treatment with the usual first-line androgen-deprivation therapies. PARPi’s function by targeting faulty homologous recombination repair pathways that result in cytotoxic double strand DNA break (DSB) accumulation in prostate cancer cells. While the efficacy of PARPi’s as a monotherapy option in mCRCP has been demonstrated clinically, the added utility of PARPi’s in combination with other anti-cancer agents is still being explored. This article will review the scientific rationale …

Comparative And Integrative Single Cell Analysis Reveals New Insights Into The Transcriptional Immaturity Of Stem Cell-Derived Β Cells, Mason D Schmidt, Matthew Ishahak, Punn Augsornworawat, Jeffrey R Millman

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Diabetes cell replacement therapy has the potential to be transformed by human pluripotent stem cell-derived β cells (SC-β cells). However, the precise identity of SC-β cells in relationship to primary fetal and adult β-cells remains unclear. Here, we used single-cell sequencing datasets to characterize the transcriptional identity of islets from in vitro differentiation, fetal islets, and adult islets. Our analysis revealed that SC-β cells share a core β-cell transcriptional identity with human adult and fetal β-cells, however SC-β cells possess a unique transcriptional profile characterized by the persistent expression and activation of progenitor and neural-biased gene networks. These networks are …

Power Grid Resiliency Enhancement Against Flood-Induced Hazards, Mohadese Movahednia Jan 2024

Power Grid Resiliency Enhancement Against Flood-Induced Hazards, Mohadese Movahednia

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Natural disasters, such as floods, may damage power system assets and lead to widespread and long outages. The impact of flood can be alleviated by preventive actions such as installing tiger dams around power substations before the flood. In this regard, it is imperative that critical substations are identified in terms of the connected load and imposed costs to the system. This study presents a resource allocation approach for protecting power substations against flood events a day ahead of the event. First, the required information for the model is extracted. Flood probability distribution functions are used to generate several flood …

A Survey Of Fusarium Oxysporum In Georgia Hemp Farms And Vegetable Gardens, Christopher D. Burt

Georgia Journal of Science

Recent changes in U.S. federal law have recognized the genetic and chemical differences between hemp and marijuana (Cannabis sativa L.), resulting in the legalization of hemp in the United States. The barriers to this plant’s growth in the state of Georgia are not well understood due to its prohibition for the past 80 years. Among the many possible obstacles is fungal disease. Fusarium oxysporum (Schlecht. emend. Snyder & Hansen) is a fungus that damages various crops and was previously researched as a biocontrol agent for C. sativa. Thus, this study surveyed hemp farms in Georgia to determine the prevalence …

Intersecting Perspectives: A Comparative Dialogue On Respect In Confucian And Western Philosophies, Chuan Chih Hsu, Antonio Calderón, Chia Shih Su

Comparative Philosophy

Present study analyzes the concept of respect in both Confucius' and Western philosophical traditions. It reveals the differences in interpretation and practice of respect due to their distinctive cultural, historical, and philosophical contexts. Confucius' philosophy emphasizes respect towards authority, traditions, and the elderly through dedication and commitment, while Western philosophy, primarily Aristotle's perspective, emphasizes reciprocal respect and the inherent rights of individuals. Both systems of thought, although contrasting, seek to promote values fostering cooperation, understanding, and peaceful coexistence. Despite their varied conceptualizations of respect, the ultimate goal remains the same – to provide ethical and moral guidance for a harmonious …

“He’S In Jail Now And I Don’T Feel Bad”: Analyzing Sureties’ Decisions To Report Bail Violations, Rachel Schumann, Carolyn Yule

International Journal on Responsibility

The control, supervision, and rehabilitation of criminalized people often falls on the shoulders of non-state agents and organizations. Surety bail releases are a clear embodiment of this trend, as the courts call upon relatives, friends, and employers to supervise the pre-conviction activity of people accused of a crime. According to the law, sureties must report all bail violations to the police; the resulting diffusion of responsibility is said to increase the penal state’s power and control over criminal justice-involved individuals while minimizing reputational risks. Yet how sureties carry out this role in the community remains unexplored. Using data from 36 …
