Counseling And Mental Health Awareness In Higher Education Institutions: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Mental Health And How It Affects Degree Completion Among Black Undergraduate College Women, Shaquina D. White, Desirae N. Williams

Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore Black undergraduate women’s lived experiences with mental health management and pursuance of degree completion. This study used a phenomenological approach, guided by the following research questions: 1) What barriers are Black undergraduate college women facing regarding their accessibility to counseling services on their campus? and 2) How do Black undergraduate college women with mental health issues effectively manage stressful situations while pursuing and completing a college degree? The current literature that examined Black women’s utilization of counseling is limited, especially among Black women enrolled in college. This study aimed to fill …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

In the United States, the 40 colleges of osteopathic medicine and 157 schools of allopathic medicine face challenges in recruiting candidates who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM), and gaps in racial disparity appear to be widening. In this commentary, the authors provide an analysis of the data collected from 8 years of conducting a URiM recruitment and welcoming social events. The event is sponsored by a student special interest group called Creating Osteopathic Minority Physicians Who Achieve Scholastic Success (COMPASS) at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine - New York (TouroCOM-NY). The results of the 8-year data analysis supports the …

Genomic Features Of Homologous Recombination Deficiency In Breast Cancer: Impact On Testing And Immunotherapy, Umer Ali, Sunitha Vungarala, Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi Jan 2024

Genomic Features Of Homologous Recombination Deficiency In Breast Cancer: Impact On Testing And Immunotherapy, Umer Ali, Sunitha Vungarala, Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi

Biology Faculty Research

Genomic instability is one of the well-established hallmarks of cancer. The homologous recombination repair (HRR) pathway plays a critical role in correcting the double-stranded breaks (DSB) due to DNA damage in human cells. Traditionally, the BRCA1/2 genes in the HRR pathway have been tested for their association with breast cancer. However, defects in the HRR pathway (HRD, also termed ‘BRCAness’), which has up to 50 genes, have been shown to be involved in tumorigenesis and treatment susceptibility to poly-ADP ribose polymerase inhibitors (PARPis), platinum-based chemotherapy, and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). A reliable consensus on HRD scores is yet to be …

Pediatric Chronic Pain And Anxiety And Depression Symptoms: The Association With Parenting Stress, Alison Vrabec Jan 2024

Pediatric Chronic Pain And Anxiety And Depression Symptoms: The Association With Parenting Stress, Alison Vrabec

Theses - ALL

As many as 38% of children experience chronic pain, and of these children about 26% have a comorbid mental health diagnosis. Parents of children with a chronic health condition demonstrate elevations in stress when compared to parents with healthy children. It is likely that when chronic pain is comorbid with mental health disorders, parents may experience greater stress. Social isolation and financial burdens may be associated with parenting stress, which may be even higher in parents of children with chronic pain compared to parents of children without chronic pain. While most pediatric chronic pain literature focuses on how parenting behaviors …

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Hpv Vaccination Intentions Among College Students, Lyric Tully Jan 2024

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Hpv Vaccination Intentions Among College Students, Lyric Tully

Theses - ALL

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the United States, however only 10 to 48.92% of college students aged 18-26 report being vaccinated against HPV. Although constructs within the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) have been shown to explain variance in HPV vaccine intentions, theory-based interventions to increase HPV vaccination intentions have not yielded promising results. The 5C model of vaccination readiness was developed to understand vaccine hesitancy and contains a unique construct, collective responsibility, previously not used to examine HPV vaccine behavior. This cross-sectional, internet-based survey study with college …

The Evolution Of The Pan African Women’S Organization (Pawo): A Case Study Of Women’S Involvement In Pan-Africanism, Shukri Abdirahman Mohamed Jan 2024

The Evolution Of The Pan African Women’S Organization (Pawo): A Case Study Of Women’S Involvement In Pan-Africanism, Shukri Abdirahman Mohamed

Theses - ALL

The thesis investigates how PAWO has engaged with and defined African cultural values and practices, while also examining the social and political challenges it has faced and its prospects as a social and political organization. The research explores the formation of PAWO during liberation movements in Africa, when women played pivotal roles in the creation of new nations. As the continent transitioned from liberation movements to government development, PAWO underwent significant transformations influenced by socioeconomic events and social developments. Key factors shaping PAWO's evolution include the emergence of "femnocrats" as women gained formal political roles, a decline in local women's …

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Signaling Mechanisms That Regulate Learning And Memory In Rats, Clementine Faye Harvey Jan 2024

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Signaling Mechanisms That Regulate Learning And Memory In Rats, Clementine Faye Harvey

Theses - ALL

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a widespread neurotrophin implicated in cellular processes underlying memory, socialization, and emotion; however, little is known about how genetic modification of BDNF interacts with BDNF modulators (e.g., hormones) to regulate BDNF-TrkB signaling. BDNF binds to the TrkB receptor and triggers signaling cascades underlying neuroplasticity, learning, and memory. Inhibitory phosphorylation of one downstream target of the BDNF cascade - GSK3β – is also linked to memory improvements. The Val66Met allele – a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the Bdnf gene - produces impairments in regulated BDNF release from the cell, as well as deficits in spatial …

Discrimination, Sleep Disturbances, And Drinking Frequency Among Racially Diverse Adolescents: A Follow-Up Prospective Study, Emma Schillinger Jan 2024

Discrimination, Sleep Disturbances, And Drinking Frequency Among Racially Diverse Adolescents: A Follow-Up Prospective Study, Emma Schillinger

Theses - ALL

Previous research has highlighted the role of discrimination experiences in the development and escalation of sleep disturbances and alcohol use among diverse adolescents. However, few studies have examined the role of discrimination experiences in the reciprocal sleep-alcohol relationship prospectively. The present study examined the prospective relationship among discrimination experiences, sleep disturbances, and alcohol use, and tested racial disparities within this risk pathway. Secondary analyses were conducted on the data drawn from a two-wave (Years 1 and 2; Y1 and Y2, respectively) online survey study of 414 high school students (Mage = 15.07 [SD = 1.19]; 57% female; 41% Black; 22% …
