A Research Center At The End Of The World A Study Of Local Writing Practices In A Global Context, Ana María Cortés Lagos
A Research Center At The End Of The World A Study Of Local Writing Practices In A Global Context, Ana María Cortés Lagos
Dissertations - ALL
How do transnational flows and collaborations shape scientific research writing? What role do local language practices play in a global science context? Or how do phenomena of globalization and internationalization impact the work of scientists writing for local audiences and “with a local eye”? Through a case study drawing on memory, archival material, and interviews, this dissertation explores the language practices of a team of vaccine researchers working from a country in the global semi-periphery (Chile). Drawing on elements of mobility, activity and genre theories, this study traces the work of these scientists across space and time and shows how …
Paradise Lost: The Effect Of Judicial Review On Congressional Debate, Laura E. Jenkins
Paradise Lost: The Effect Of Judicial Review On Congressional Debate, Laura E. Jenkins
Dissertations - ALL
How does judicial supremacy affect constitutional deliberation in Congress? Normative critics of judicial supremacy argue that judicial supremacy warps congressional debate by disincentivizing members of Congress from independently considering the moral and legal issues at stake in legislation. As this dissertation’s quantitative analysis, topic modeling, and qualitative textual analysis show, the Supreme Court’s decision in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (2012) disincentivized members of Congress from engaging in independent constitutional interpretation and normative argumentation. Before the Supreme Court’s decision in Sebelius, members of both parties debated the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate and used constitutional …

Three Essays On Food Insecurity, Cognition, And Food Assistance In The Context Of Aging And Family Dynamics, Dongmei Zuo
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation consists of three chapters pertaining to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation, food insecurity, cognition impairment, and sibling correlation in SNAP participation over the life course. Participation in SNAP among eligible adults 60 and older is much lower than among the younger population, and rates continue to decline throughout the life course while, at the same time, the risk of cognitive impairment increases. The relationship between food insecurity and health outcomes among adults has garnered increasing attention. Some previous studies found an association between food insecurity and cognition outcomes among older adults. However, they were hampered by not …

Three Papers On Intergenerational Relationships In China, Wencheng Zhang
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation examines the changes in China's social and demographic landscape and their effects on adult children's relationships with their elderly parents. It focuses on how modernization, urban migration, lower birth rates, and an aging population have transformed traditional filial piety norms and intergenerational expectations in Chinese society. The first paper aims to investigate the association between children’s economic status and parents’ self-rated health and examine the potential mediating mechanisms for this relationship. Utilizing the 2014 wave of the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS), this study predicted parent’s self-rated health from children’s economic status using inverse probability of treatment …

Family Engagement: Barriers, Perceptions, And Responsibilities, Carla Jean Singleton Narlesky
Student Theses and Dissertations
Twenty years of research report that family engagement makes a difference in student achievement and well-being. However, most of that research was conducted in urban and suburban settings. Therefore, there is a vital need to explore family engagement in rural settings. This study focused on that. The purpose of this quantitative correlation study was to discover the barriers rural families face when engaging with their child’s school while understanding their perceptions, roles, and responsibilities towards establishing and creating a reciprocal family engagement partnership. Using Bronfenbrenner’s’ ecological systems theory, research was conducted focusing on the first layer, microsystem. Approximately 120 participants …

Investigation Into The Influences Of Emotional Intelligence And Cultural Intelligence On Students’ Public-School Experiences, Rania Maalouf
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to develop an understanding of how students’ Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Cultural Intelligence (CQ) influence their communication with teachers and peers. This investigation is rooted in Daniel Goleman’s Theory of Emotional Intelligence and Christopher Earley’s work on Cultural Intelligence. Responses from one-on-one interviews with five teachers were analyzed for qualitative data. The analysis led to eleven emerging themes. The findings indicate that students’ EQ and CQ can influence students’ communications with peers and teachers. When students possess EQ skills such as naming emotions, recognizing others’ emotions, and responding appropriately to those emotions their …
Interventions For At-Risk Students And Their Impacts On Autonomy, Connectedness, And Competence In Missouri Public High Schools, David Dawson
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the interventions and strategies used with students considered at-risk of dropping out of high school in Missouri public high schools. Self-determination theory was used to explain how students became motivated to stay in school when their need for competence, connection, and autonomy are fulfilled. Based on a case study design, this study collected qualitative data by interviewing high school administrators, high school counselors, and high school teachers. One theme from the data showed that the more connected a student was to school, the higher chance that student had of graduating. Another theme …
A Qualitative Study On The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Transition From Classroom To Virtual Learning Among Elementary School Teachers With Underrepresented Students In A Rural School District, Pacey Bowens
Student Theses and Dissertations
In the spring of 2020, the academic school year for all educational institutions was tremendously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused great concern with school administrations, teachers, parents, students, and their communities. In the fall of 2020 and the following two years, many school decision-makers responded by offering students options to attend either in-person, virtually, or both. Unfortunately, the decisions obstructed the learning capabilities of the minority student population, affecting their academic and social well-being. This qualitative case study explored how teachers rapidly pivoted from their natural face-to-face classroom settings and the challenges and barriers encountered while creating new …

Examining The Influence Of Principals’ Servant Leadership Practices On Teachers’ Perceived Stress In Elementary Schools, Jennifer Ann Rankin
Student Theses and Dissertations
Stress experienced by elementary teachers is common, and teachers often discover that stress reduces job satisfaction, performance, and overall well-being. A record number of teachers feel marginalized and leave the profession due to high levels of stress in schools. The current study employed a phenomenological research design and gathered qualitative data from 12 elementary teachers and three corresponding principals who are considered self-sacrificing servant leaders as a possible source of reducing their perceived stress through dyadic relationships. The four attributes of servant leadership conceptually outlined a deductive framework to include an administrator’s ability to communicate servant leadership through expressions of …

The Color Of Money: How Our Broken Campaign Finance System Fuels Racial Inequality, Blair T. Page
The Color Of Money: How Our Broken Campaign Finance System Fuels Racial Inequality, Blair T. Page
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
The laws upholding our campaign finance system are inadequate and under-enforced. These problems are felt disproportionately by African American voters. Election law experts agree that the structure and enforcement authority of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) severely limits the ability of the agency to achieve its goals. Several Supreme Court decisions have also limited the ability of Congress to control campaign contributions and expenditures. Tracking expenditures from corporations, groups, and individuals (to the extent possible), will show the link between favorable outcomes for these groups and their detrimental effects on African Americans. While closing racial disparities in wealth allows for …

Targeted Repression Of Topa By Crispri Reveals A Critical Function For Balanced Dna Topoisomerase I Activity In The Chlamydia Trachomatis Developmental Cycle, Li Shen, Leiqiong Gao, Abigail R. Swoboda, Scot P. Ouellette
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium that is responsible for the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted infection. Changes in DNA topology in this pathogen have been linked to its pathogenicity-associated developmental cycle. Here, evidence is provided that the balanced activity of DNA topoisomerases contributes to controlling Chlamydia developmental processes. Utilizing catalytically inactivated Cas12 (dCas12)-based clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats interference (CRISPRi) technology, we demonstrate targeted knockdown of chromosomal topA transcription in C. trachomatis without detected toxicity of dCas12. Repression of topA impaired the developmental cycle of C. trachomatis mostly through disruption of its differentiation from a replicative form …

Abstract Objective: There is clear evidence that rates of mental health disorders among college students are increasing, and many students experiencing mental health difficulties do not engage in treatment. Some evidence suggests that telehealth may be a way to increase access to care. Research conducted prior to the pandemic suggests that students generally favor in-person treatment over online treatment, but little data has been collected following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to clarify if this trend persists. The proposed research sought to understand how treatment perceptions may have shifted following the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Data was collected from 350 …

In this study, we identified three novel compound classes with potent activity against Plasmodium falciparum, the most dangerous human malarial parasite. Resistance of this pathogen to known drugs is increasing, and compounds with different modes of action are urgently needed. One promising drug target is the enzyme 1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5- phosphate synthase (DXPS) of the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway for which we have previously identified three active compound classes against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The close structural similarities of the active sites of the DXPS enzymes of P. falciparum and M. tuberculosis prompted investigation of their antiparasitic action, all classes …

Power Grid Resiliency Enhancement Against Flood-Induced Hazards, Mohadese Movahednia
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Natural disasters, such as floods, may damage power system assets and lead to widespread and long outages. The impact of flood can be alleviated by preventive actions such as installing tiger dams around power substations before the flood. In this regard, it is imperative that critical substations are identified in terms of the connected load and imposed costs to the system. This study presents a resource allocation approach for protecting power substations against flood events a day ahead of the event. First, the required information for the model is extracted. Flood probability distribution functions are used to generate several flood …

College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Executive Summary Faith and spirituality are becoming increasingly sought-after anchors in mounting challenges in the contemporary world. The need for effective leadership, spiritual guidance, and mentorship have become more pivotal. Evidence also suggests that spiritual leadership values and practices are related to leadership effectiveness and encompass the behaviors needed to motivate oneself, satisfy spiritual well-being, and positively influence others within that organization. However, more research has yet to explore how spirituality affects leadership behavior and action in faith-based programs such as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This study explored the lived experiences of RCIA leaders and participants …

While immune checkpoint inhibitors have evolved into the standard of care for advanced melanoma, 40–50% of melanoma cases progress while on therapies. The relationship between bacterium and carcinogenesis is well founded, such as in H. pylori in gastric cancers, and Fusobacterium in colorectal cancers. This interplay between dysbiosis and carcinogenesis questions whether changes in the microbiome could affect treatment. Thus, FMT may find utility in modifying the efficacy of anti-PD-1. This review aims to examine the use of FMT in treatment-resistant melanoma. A literature search was performed using the keywords “fecal microbiota transplant” and “skin cancer”. Studies were reviewed for …

Determining Best Diet And Temperature Regime Of Monkeyface Pricklebacks (Cebidichthys Violaceus) For Aquaculture, Luke C. Townsend
Master's Theses
Wild freshwater eel populations are threatened due to overfishing and habitat degradation. Attempts to use aquaculture to close the eel life cycle have yet to be commercially adapted, owing largely to their complex lifecycle. Monkeyface pricklebacks (Cebidichthys violaceus) are intertidal fish that may serve as an alternative species for freshwater eels in aquaculture, as they possess several beneficial characteristics. This study aimed to optimize diet and culture temperatures to maximize monkeyface prickleback cultures by measuring growth, condition, metabolic rates, fillet composition, and critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of juvenile fish that were reared in two separate experiments: (1) on four different …
