Studies at the juncture of development economics and public health take on considerable responsibility in addressing inequality and related mental health distress. Mental healthcare in economically marginalized populations requires depicting the linkages between socioeconomic status and psychological distress. In the present work, a sequential mixed-methods design was used to study 190 people in such communities in India. Gender-dependent psychological distress was found according to the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K-10) with moderate distress in women (M = 26.30, SD = 9.15) and mild distress in men (M = 21.04, SD = 8.35). Regression analysis indicated that gender significantly predicted psychological …
Pathogenicity Prediction Of Gabaa Receptor Missense Variants, Ya-Juan Wang, Giang H. Vu, Ting-Wei Mu
Pathogenicity Prediction Of Gabaa Receptor Missense Variants, Ya-Juan Wang, Giang H. Vu, Ting-Wei Mu
Faculty Scholarship
Variants in the genes encoding gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor subunits are associated with epilepsy. To date, over 1000 clinical variants have been identified in these genes. However, the majority of these variants lack functional studies and their clinical significance is uncertain although accumulating evidence indicates that proteostasis deficiency is the major disease-causing mechanism. Here, we apply two state-of-the-art modeling tools, namely AlphaMissense and Rhapsody to predict the pathogenicity of saturating missense variants in genes that encode the major subunits of GABAA receptors in the central nervous system, including GABRA1, GABRB2, GABRB3, and GABRG2. We demonstrate that the predicted …

Hyperkalemia has been defined as a condition where a serum potassium level is > 5.5 mmol/l. It is associated with fatal dysrhythmias and muscular dysfunction. Certain medical conditions, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus, and others, can lead to hyperkalemia. Many of the signs of hyperkalemia are nonspecific. A history and physical examination can be beneficial in the diagnosis of the condition. In this regard, certain characteristic electrocardiogram findings are associated with hyperkalemia along with laboratory potassium levels. In acute and potentially lethal conditions, hyperkalemia treatments include glucose and insulin, bicarbonate, calcium gluconate, beta-2 agonists, hyperventilation, and dialysis. There …

Melanoma frequently harbors genetic alterations in key molecules leading to the aberrant activation of PI3K and its downstream pathways. Although the role of PI3K/AKT/mTOR in melanoma progression and drug resistance is well documented, targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway showed less efficiency in clinical trials than might have been expected, since the suppression of the PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway-induced feedback loops is mostly associated with the activation of compensatory pathways such as MAPK/MEK/ERK. Consequently, the development of intrinsic and acquired resistance can occur. As a solid tumor, melanoma is notorious for its heterogeneity. This can be expressed in the form of genetically divergent …

Jehovah's Witnesses And Perioperative Blood Management Strategies, Anne Owusu, Lauren Barnes
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Traditionally, total hip replacement surgery involves moderate to significant bleeding, which poses a particular risk for Jehovah's Witness patients. Jehovah's Witness is a religious organization consisting of approximately 8.5 million members worldwide, of whom 1.3 million reside in the United States of America. It prohibits its members from receiving allogeneic blood products, which present ethical, legal, and medical challenges during surgeries. Members can be expelled for willfully receiving blood. Studies indicated that Jehovah's Witness surgical patients have comparable outcomes to those who received blood products. The purpose of this study is to review blood conservation strategies to optimize the care …

Unveiling The Unique Ras Isoform And Domain Specific Regulation Of Braf Kinase, Tarah Trebino
Theses and Dissertations
BRAF kinase is a key member of the MAPK pathway, important for cell growth and division. Upstream signals promote BRAF activation by interaction with the membrane bound GTPase, RAS, which leads to relief of autoinhibition and dimerization. The N-terminal regulatory domains of BRAF, including the BRAF specific region (BSR), the RAS binding domain (RBD), and the cysteine rich domain (CRD), govern the conformational state of the cytosolic, autoinhibited monomer and drive the RAS-RAF interaction. Active BRAF phosphorylates and activates its substrate MEK, which in turn phosphorylates and activates ERK. Mutations in RAS and BRAF are the cause of many cancers …

BACKGROUND: Transaortic valve implant (TAVI) is the treatment of choice for severe aortic stenosis (AS). Some patients develop prosthesis patient mismatch (PPM) after TAVI. It is challenging to determine which patients are at risk for clinical deterioration.
METHODS: We retrospectively measured echocardiographic parameters of left ventricular (LV) morphology and function, prosthetic aortic valve effective orifice area (iEOA) and hemodynamics in 313 patients before and 1 year after TAVI. Our objective was to compare the change in echocardiographic parameters associated with left ventricular reverse modeling in subjects with and without PPM. Our secondary objective was to evaluate echo parameters associated with …

The ethical and regulatory oversight of any clinical activity related to human subjects is commonly determined based on its categorization as either clinical practice or research. Prominent bioethicists have criticized the traditional distinctions used to delineate these categories, calling them counterproductive and outmoded, and arguing that learning and clinical practice should be deliberately and appropriately integrated. Personalized trials represent a clinical activity with characteristics that overlap both categories, making ethical and regulatory oversight requirements less straightforward. When the primary intent of the personalized trial is to assist in the conduct of individualized patient care with an emphasis on protecting the …

The gate-type carbon nanotubes cathodes exhibit advantages in long-term stable emission owing to the uniformity of electrical field on the carbon nanotubes, but the gate inevitably reduces the transmittance of electron beam, posing challenges for system stabilities. In this work, we introduce electron beam focusing technique using the self-charging SiNx/Au/Si gate. The potential of SiNx is measured to be approximately −60 V quickly after the cathode turning on, the negative potential can be maintained as the emission goes on. The charged surface generates rebounding electrostatic forces on the following electrons, significantly focusing the electron beam on the …

Primate evolution has led to a remarkable diversity of behavioral specializations and pronounced brain size variation among species (Barton, 2012; DeCasien and Higham, 2019; Powell et al., 2017). Gene expression provides a promising opportunity for studying the molecular basis of brain evolution, but it has been explored in very few primate species to date (e.g. Khaitovich et al., 2005; Khrameeva et al., 2020; Ma et al., 2022; Somel et al., 2009). To understand the landscape of gene expression evolution across the primate lineage, we generated and analyzed RNA-seq data from four brain regions in an unprecedented eighteen species. Here, we …

jurisprudential rulings and effects of dissemination of wrong medical information on websites. The study follows the inductive and descriptive approach. Some of the most important findings of the study are as follows: Adapting the medical advice revolves around being a lease or royalty agreement, and adapting the unpaid dissemination of medical information is an act of righteousness. Kinematic Characteristics Of Novices’ Sprint Techniques At Maximum Velocity Phase, Saburo Nishimura, Yoshinori Kinomura
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 5: Issue 1, Article 2, 2024. Sprint performance is a crucial aspect of achieving high performance across a range of sports. However, previous studies analyzing the sprint technique of novices have yielded disparate findings regarding effective sprint techniques. For instance, Saito and Ito (1995) found no significant difference in the maximum thigh angle of the free leg between boys aged 7 to 12 and sprinters. Conversely, Katoh et al. (2001) reported that elementary school sprinters indicated a larger maximum thigh angle of the free leg than novice elementary children. Inconsistency like this makes …

Teaching about sexuality can be messy. What does it mean to incite queer joy as an educational language in sex education? In this article, we explore how queer joy can be used by teachers as a language to confront this messy work of sex education and teach in more pleasurable, joyful, and inclusive ways. In our analysis, we draw upon the conversations and visual data we created alongside 43 teacher-participants from New Brunswick, Canada in a series of participatory media-making workshops and describe how queer joy informs the artful praxis that transpired in these spaces. In these workshops, we observed …
