Liquid Metal Antennas For Wearable Devices Jan 2024

Liquid Metal Antennas For Wearable Devices

Defensive Publications Series

The novelty in this invention, rather than being about the liquid metal materials themselves, is around the use of liquid metals as antennas in a stretchable substrate (e.g., the metal could be injected into a silicone band or used as a conductive core of a thread for a textile band). The use of liquid metals as antennas in wearables could be the best way to significantly increase antenna surface area without introducing problematic points of failure, as liquid metals are self-healing (e.g., to minor puncture damage) and highly adaptable. This concept could be used in any wearable strap and may …

Wearable Device Strain Detection Using Mechano Chromophores, Anonymous Jan 2024

Wearable Device Strain Detection Using Mechano Chromophores, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques that provide visual indication of excessive strain on elastomeric materials. Per techniques of this disclosure, smart materials are integrated into elastomeric and/or polymeric components of a device. The smart materials enable detecting and quantifying the applied strain, leading to activation of a visual indicator. A smart material such as a mechano chromophore is applied as a coating or is embedded in the core material. Mechano chromophores undergo reversible structural transformation under conditions of strain and can be used as a visible sensing material through changes in color. The smart materials can be customized to achieve threshold …

In the current study, we biosynthesized copper oxide NPs (CuO NPs) utilizing the essential oils extracted from Boswellia carterii oleogum resin, which served as a bioreductant and capping agent with the help of microwave energy. Afterwards, the platinum(ii) based anticancer drug, carboplatin (Cr), was loaded onto the CuO NPs, exploiting the electrostatic interactions forming Cr@CuO NPs. The produced biogenic NPs were then characterized using zeta potential (ZP), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. In addition, the entrapment efficiency and release profile of the loaded Cr were evaluated. Thereafter, SRB assay …

Representation Matters: Content Analysis Of Breastfeeding Images In A Commercial Stock Image Bank, Lauren M. Dinour, Melanie Shefchik

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

Several behavioral change theories posit that normative influences contribute to breastfeeding behaviors and disparities. Given that media has historically presented a narrow view of what is deemed normative in human milk feeding, this study describes who and what is represented in breastfeeding images available in a stock image bank, and whether differences exist based on the breastfeeding parent’s skin color. Using content analysis, the most relevant 2% (n = 2284) of breastfeeding and lactation images in Adobe Stock were coded for 60 variables within 12 categories, such as skin color, ability, setting, skin exposure, etc. Descriptive statistics were used …

Investigating The Impacts Of Shame-Proneness On Students’ State Shame, Self-Regulation, And Learning, Jeremiah Sullins, Jeannine Turner, Juhee Kim, Steven Barber

Faculty Research and Publications

We explored relationships between students’ shame-proneness and their experiences of state shame, self-regulation, and learning in a laboratory. We conducted two studies with different content: physics (Study 1, n = 179) and the circulatory system (Study 2, n = 85). We first evaluated students’ shame-proneness, self-regulation, and content knowledge (pretest). Then, half of the students participated in the experimental condition where state shame was induced. Subsequently, we evaluated students’ state shame and learning gains. In both studies, t-tests demonstrated that the experimental manipulation effectively induced higher levels of state shame. Follow-up 2 (experimental/control condition) by 2 (high/low shame-proneness) ANOVAs revealed …

Copyright And Covid, Sean Flynn

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

During the COVID-19 pandemic it became widely recognized that speedier access to patent rights should be enabled to speed global scale-up of vaccine production. This understanding was expressed in a proposal by India and South Africa that the World Trade Organization suspend multilateral intellectual property rules on COVID vaccines, treatment and containment. The original waiver proposal proposed a suspension of WTO rules on all forms of intellectual property needed for a broad range of COVID-19 response measures, including “vaccination,” “treatment,” and “containment.” The final “TRIPS Waiver,” however, was ultimately limited to a minor provision of TRIPS permitting greater use of …

Hygrothermal Risk Assessment Of External Wall Insulation Retrofit To Non-Traditional Wall Types In An Irish Context, Using The Glaser Method And A Heat, Air And Moisture Transient Model, Gareth Mcdonnell, Joseph Little

Articles

The Climate Action Plan 2019 targets the low-energy retrofit of 500,000 existing Irish homes before 2030.1 Up to 80 per cent of building failures can be attributed to moisture risks.2 The literature indicated that external wall insulation (EWI, ETICS) failures are mostly due to moisture ingress at junctions and interfaces. A hygrothermal risk assessment of EWI on three walls with rendered concrete/concrete blockwork/cavity walls in Dublin, Belfast and Belmullet was undertaken using transient numerical simulation and the Glaser method. The guidance, common practice indicates a preference for Glaser. The initial simulation results were compared to assess the appropriateness of Glaser. …

Faculty Research 2024

For over a century, early researchers sought to study biological organisms in a laboratory setting, leading to the generation of both in vitro and in vivo model systems. Patient-derived models of cancer (PDMCs) have more recently come to the forefront of preclinical cancer models and are even finding their way into clinical practice as part of functional precision medicine programs. The PDMC Consortium, supported by the Division of Cancer Biology in the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, seeks to understand the biological principles that govern the various PDMC behaviors, particularly in response to perturbagens, such as …

The All of Us (AoU) initiative aims to sequence the genomes of over one million Americans from diverse ethnic backgrounds to improve personalized medical care. In a recent technical pilot, we compare the performance of traditional short-read sequencing with long-read sequencing in a small cohort of samples from the HapMap project and two AoU control samples representing eight datasets. Our analysis reveals substantial differences in the ability of these technologies to accurately sequence complex medically relevant genes, particularly in terms of gene coverage and pathogenic variant identification. We also consider the advantages and challenges of using low coverage sequencing to …

Miniaturized Fluorescence Ph Sensor With Assembly Free Ball Lens On A Tapered Multimode Optical Fiber, Bohong Zhang, Farhan Mumtaz, Muhammad Roman, Dinesh Reddy Alla, Rex E. Gerald, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In biochemistry, the absence of a compact, assembly-free pH sensor with high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio has been a persistent hurdle in achieving accurate pH measurements in real time, particularly in complex liquid environments. This manuscript introduces what we believe to be a novel solution in the form of a miniaturized pH sensor utilizing an assembly-free ball lens on a tapered multimode optical fiber (TMMF), offering the potential to revolutionize pH sensing in biochemical applications. A multimode optical fiber (MMF) was subjected to tapering processes, leading to the creation of an ultra-thin needle-like structure with a cross-sectional diameter of about …

Buah Buton In Traditional House Interior: Representation Of Women's Role And Influence, Fakhrur Razi Maamor, Sabzali Musa Kahn, Basitah Taif

Interiority

Buah buton is a three-dimensional wooden carving as an interior object in the traditional house of Negeri Sembilan. The purpose of this article is to establish a link between the buah buton in Luak Tanah Mengandung, Negeri Sembilan and the position of women who connect the legacy and leadership in the Adat Perpatih, a customary community law, and how such a relationship manifests itself within the traditional house's interior. The function of buah buton was revealed through fieldwork and interviews with community leaders, which were then combined into a narrative that represented the function of buah buton. The …

Typology And Interiority Of Cohousing In Europe 1981–2021, Virginia De Jorge-Huertas, Justo De Jorge-Moreno Jan 2024

Typology And Interiority Of Cohousing In Europe 1981–2021, Virginia De Jorge-Huertas, Justo De Jorge-Moreno

Interiority

This work aims to research the connection between cohousing architecture and interiority. For this purpose, the analyses are structured in two phases. The first consists of the characterisation and identification of underlying typologies of European cohousing projects in the last three decades, 1981–2022. The second phase consists of the connection between the interiority concepts (in terms of planimetry, typology, spatial syntax, and interior spaces) and the cohousing architecture in the case studies selected from the first phase, which made it possible to compare cohousing projects and propose future strategies. The research identifies a typology with two clusters of cohousing projects …

Cultural Humility Training With A Simulated Therapy Client: A Qualitative Case Study, Justine Piontek Jan 2024

Cultural Humility Training With A Simulated Therapy Client: A Qualitative Case Study, Justine Piontek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A qualitative case study explored seven counseling psychology doctoral trainees’ experiences in a small-group training with a simulated therapy client of a marginalized identity, and more specifically, the trainees’ perceptions of how the interaction with the simulated client influenced their cultural humility development. The simulation training was designed to mirror a therapy intake and the case profile reflected an African American client presenting with race-based stress from ongoing discrimination across several life domains. A thematic analysis was performed on the training de-brief focus group yielding five themes: (1) trainees’ impressions (2) trainees’ affective responses (3) comparisons to clinical work with …

Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Gambling Warning Message Recall And Recognition, Tori Horn Jan 2024

Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Gambling Warning Message Recall And Recognition, Tori Horn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Warning messages inform consumers of potential risks associated with product use and reduce the likelihood of excessive engagement in risky behaviors. Evidence supports that such messages can educate consumers and reduce gambling. Questions remain about how acute alcohol consumption may interfere with message reception and retention. Memory literature suggests that while alcohol consumption may not influence general message reception it may impact the recall of specific details of the messages. To examine this effect, participants (n = 82) were randomly assigned to consume alcoholic beverages (target blood alcohol concentrations of 0.06-0.08%) or juice. Participants then gambled on slot machines in …

The Effects Of Resilience And Optimism In Maternal Role Attainment After Six To Twelve Months Postpartum In Women Hospitalized For Pregnancy Complications, Marianne Allen Jan 2024

The Effects Of Resilience And Optimism In Maternal Role Attainment After Six To Twelve Months Postpartum In Women Hospitalized For Pregnancy Complications, Marianne Allen

Dissertations

Each year in the US, approximately 1,200,000 pregnant women are hospitalized on bed rest with the intent to improve pregnancy outcomes. However, antepartum bed rest is not benign and may contribute to physical debilitation, postpartum depression (PPD), impaired maternal role attainment (MRA), and altered maternal-infant attachment. There are gaps in the literature about the effects of resilience, optimism, and PPD on MRA and the effects of resilience and optimism on PPD at six to 12 months postpartum. Although the effects of resilience and optimism have been studied in general adult populations, few studies have considered resilience and optimism as protectors …
