Public Service Motivation And Job Satisfaction Amid Covid-19: Exploring The Effects Of Work Environment Changes, Seulki Lee, Chongmin Na
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought critical changes to job demands and resources, which in turn affect employee motivation and outcomes. This study explores how COVID-19–induced work intensity and COVID-19–related organizational support influence public service motivation (PSM) and job satisfaction. Using survey data from a nationally representative sample of 1,430 South Korean central government employees collected during the pandemic (May–June 2020), we find that COVID-19–induced work intensity is positively associated with PSM, which in turn has a positive association with job satisfaction. We also find that COVID-19–related organizational support has both direct and indirect associations with job satisfaction through PSM. These …

Hackles: Simulating And Visually Representing The Anxiety Of Walking Alone, Sydney Pratte, Anthony Tang, Shannon Hoover, Lora Oehlberg
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this work, we compare the designs of two fashion-tech garments that communicate the anxiety felt when walking alone. While the two garments share a common vision, they are designed to be worn in two radically different settings and to communicate to different audiences: one directly communicates an empathetic experience to its wearer; the other a model wears at a runway show and must share its story to a general audience. We used Research Through Design (RtD) methods to design both fashion-tech garments. Then, we recorded and analyzed the design process for both garments via an annotated portfolio to compare …

The precise recognition of food categories plays a pivotal role for intelligent health management, attracting significant research attention in recent years. Prominent benchmarks, such as Food-101 and VIREO Food-172, provide abundant food image resources that catalyze the prosperity of research in this field. Nevertheless, these datasets are well-curated from canteen scenarios and thus deviate from food appearances in daily life. This discrepancy poses great challenges in effectively transferring classifiers trained on these canteen datasets to broader daily-life scenarios encountered by humans. Toward this end, we present two new benchmarks, namely DailyFood-172 and DailyFood-16, specifically designed to curate food images from …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Observational epidemiological studies have reported a relationship between remnant cholesterol and stroke. However, the results are inconclusive, and causality remains unclear due to confounding or reverse causality. Our objective in this study was to investigate the causal relevance of remnant cholesterol and the risk of stroke and its subtypes using the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) including 115,082 European individuals (UK Biobank) were used to identify instruments for remnant cholesterol, including intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) cholesterol and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol. Summary-level data for total stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemic stroke (IS), and IS subtypes were obtained …

Adaptive Inter-Vehicular Collaboration For Level 5 Autonomous Driving, Sumbal Malik
Dissertations
The evolution of sensor technologies, mobile networks, and artificial intelligence has significantly expanded the horizons of various sectors, notably in autonomous driving. According to the World Health Organization, over 1.3 million people succumb to traffic accidents annually, predominantly due to human negligence. Complex urban environments, characterized by mixed traffic flow involving Human Driven Vehicles and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, intricate traffic patterns, frequent lane changes, and slow speeds, face escalating challenges related to traffic accidents and congestion. These challenges lead to wasted time, increased fuel consumption, and heightened pollution emission levels. Hence, the development of a safe and robust version …

As workers and family members, individuals ought to celebrate seemingly positive events (e.g., a promotion and the purchase of a home). Yet, the numerous identities that contemporary workers hold increase the likelihood of an event that is pleasant in one domain being problematic in another and more cognitively and affectively complex than anticipated. We theorize that these events are likely to prompt self-evaluations that are positive (“I'm a success!”) and negative (“I'm a failure.”) across one's identity set, with questions such as “Who have I become?” and “Is this who I ought to be?” The result is self-ambivalence, that is, …

Effect Of Chloropicrin And Metam Sodium On Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In California Strawberry Production, Colin Timothy Koubek
Effect Of Chloropicrin And Metam Sodium On Soil Nitrogen Dynamics In California Strawberry Production, Colin Timothy Koubek
Plant Sciences
California strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) bring in ~3 billion yearly for the state's economy. Strawberry growers use fumigants like chloropicrin and metam sodium to manage a variety of soilborne diseases in conventional production. The yield-boosting effects of fumigation on strawberries are often attributed to disease management, but the ‘fertilizer effect’ from mineralization may play an equally significant role. This experiment conducted in a grower field sought to find out the influence that fumigation had on the mineralization of soil organic nitrogen and if preplant fertilizer application affected early season nitrogen (N). There were six treatments: control, control with controlled …

Understanding customer emotions and preferences is paramount for success in the dynamic product design landscape. This paper presents a study to develop a prediction pipeline to detect the aspect and perform sentiment analysis on review data. The pre-trained Bidirectional Encoder Representation from Transformers (BERT) model and the Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer (T5) are deployed to predict customer emotions. These models were trained on synthetically generated and manually labeled datasets to detect the specific features from review data, then sentiment analysis was performed to classify the data into positive, negative, and neutral reviews concerning their aspects. This research focused on eco-friendly products …

Degradation of engineered systems can result in poor performance and failure. Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have been used to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of engineered systems by analyzing condition monitoring data. Conventional GCNs typically stack multiple spectral graph convolutional layers, where each layer aggregates condition monitoring data and then projects the aggregated data into another feature space. However, conventional GCNs suffer from two issues. Firstly, repeated aggregation operations affect the temporal correlation of condition monitoring data. Secondly, repeated aggregation and projection operations may generate less significant features, resulting in poor prediction performance. To address these issues, we introduce …

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity and metabolic diseases both disproportionately affect Hispanic children. Cross-sectional studies have linked food insecurity with adverse cardiometabolic markers, including elevated plasma triglycerides and glucose concentrations. However, the association between changes in food insecurity and changes in cardiometabolic markers in children remains to be explored. Furthermore, few studies have assessed the impact of school-based nutrition interventions on household food insecurity.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to assess the effect of the TX Sprouts intervention on household food insecurity and to examine the association between changes in household food insecurity and changes in cardiometabolic markers over 1 …

INTRODUCTION: Addressing femoral neck fractures resulting from ground-level falls in older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves a personalized treatment plan. There is considerable ongoing debate concerning the relative advantages and disadvantages of surgical treatment (internal fixation or arthroplasty) vs nonoperative treatment for femoral neck fractures in older persons with AD.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared the mortality, hazard ratio, and survival rate between operative and nonoperative treatments, controlling for patients' demographic information and baseline health status. The study population consisted of Optum beneficiaries diagnosed with AD who experienced an initial femoral neck fracture claim between January 1, 2012, …
