This study examines how much leisure-time physical activity participation is correlated to HRQoL in parent-child dyads with ASD. Method: Participants were recruited from two Rehabilitation Centers for neurodevelopmental disability children. Eighty-five ASD children and their parents participated in …

Reimagining The Criminal Legal System To Create A More Equitable Society, The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute For Social Change
The Hooks Institute Policy Papers
The policy papers in this edition help us begin to answer Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s pertinent question: “Instead of asking whether anyone should be locked up or go free, why don’t we think about why we solve problems by repeating the kind of behavior that brought us the problem in the first place?” The series is arranged intentionally to engage with the criminal legal system from beginning to end—from its roots, to its policies and ideologies, to its lasting effects. Each paper focuses on one critical issue in the criminal legal system in the United States, and then presents a set …

Sustainability and Social Justice
Ethiopians have deep-rooted traditions of using plants to treat ailments affecting humans and domesticated animals. Approximately 80% of the population continues to rely on traditional medicine, including for the prevention and treatment of viral diseases. Many antiviral plants are available to and widely used by communities in areas where access to conventional healthcare systems is limited. In some cases, pharmacological studies also confirm the potent antiviral properties of Ethiopian plants. Building on traditional knowledge of medicinal plants and testing their antiviral properties may help to expand options to address the global pandemic of COVID-19 including its recently isolated virulent variants …
Cav Systems Incorporating Air Pollution Information From Traffic Congestion, Krishna Kumar Nedunuri, Ramanitharan Kandiah
Cav Systems Incorporating Air Pollution Information From Traffic Congestion, Krishna Kumar Nedunuri, Ramanitharan Kandiah
Center for Connected and Automated Transportation
The economic impact of air pollution due to motor vehicles by 2030 will be 100 billion dollars, and the public health impacts from traffic pollution will grow to 17 billion dollars. The transportation industry also faces the challenge of monitoring and controlling greenhouse gases (GHGs). CSU studied criteria air pollutants (CAPs)under different traffic congestion scenarios along selected freeways in Ohio. The study captured pollution intensities in different seasons, representing different atmospheric stabilities and concentrations of criteria air pollutants and greenhouse gases as a function of traffic densities. Our prior work determined typical hot spots in Ohio along freeways prone to …

Forging the Future: A History of the John Martinson Honors College, 2013–2023 is the story of a collaborative effort to build a visionary place: an academic-residential college that would bring together students from across disciplines and differences to rethink the goals and practices of a college education. Designed to be a hub for interdisciplinary learning and innovative pedagogy at Purdue University and a national leader in honors education, the John Martinson Honors College (JMHC) was first and foremost a dream of the future. How that collective dream took shape—from the first, speculative discussions of a college to the literal construction …

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The court addresses the statutory requirement for a preliminary hearing within 15 days of a defendant’s initial appearance on felony or gross misdemeanor charges, unless good cause exists for delay. The court determines that the justice court must balance the defendant’s right to pretrial liberty with the state’s interests and court needs when assessing good cause, requiring on-record justifications for any delays and efforts to expedite hearings. In this case, appellant Chittenden filed a petition for a writ of mandamus in district court seeking a dismissal of the charges against her because the justice court scheduled her preliminary hearing 76 …
Prospective Hires: Examining Ex-Offender Stigma Effects On Employment, Amanda Neff
Prospective Hires: Examining Ex-Offender Stigma Effects On Employment, Amanda Neff
Justice Studies Theses
Formerly incarcerated persons face many barriers upon being released from prison–one of which is gaining employment. Obtaining a job can be difficult due to employers’ perceived employability of those who have been involved in the justice system. Organizational and personal characteristics of employers have been found in previous research to impact how likely an employer is to hire formerly incarcerated individuals. This thesis examines how stigma surrounding formerly incarcerated persons is perceived by employers through quantitatively examining employer demographics and their willingness to hire these individuals. This study used a mixed-model randomized sampling method for surveying employers in Bristol, Central …

As federal strategic plans prioritize increasing diversity within the biomedical workforce, and STEM training and outreach programs seek to recruit and retain students from historically underrepresented populations, there is a need for interrogation of traditional demographic descriptors and careful consideration of best practices for obtaining demographic data. To accelerate this work, equity-focused researchers and leaders from STEM programs convened to examine approaches for measuring demographic variables. Gender, race/ethnicity, disability, and disadvantaged background were prioritized given their focus by federal funding agencies. Categories of sex minority, sexual (orientation) minority, and gender minority (SSGM) should be included in demographic measures collected by …

Constructing proofs for the limit using the formal definition induces a high cognitive load. Common assessment tools, like cognitive load scales, lack specificity for the concept of limits. This research aims to validate an instrument tailored to assess cognitive load in students focused on the formal definition of limits, addressing the need for diverse strategies in education. The research employs a quantitative survey design with a Rasch model approach, utilizing a data collection instrument in the form of a questionnaire. Subsequently, the data are analyzed by focusing on three aspects: (1) item fit to the Rasch model, (2) unidimensionality, and …

Beyond ‘Heightism’ And ‘Height Premium’: An Anthropology And Sociology Of Human Stature, Gideon Lasco
Development Studies Faculty Publications
This review article examines the meanings and materialities of human stature, from serving as a marker of human difference to shaping the socio-spatial experiences of individuals. I introduce existing perspectives on height from various disciplines, including biomedical discourses on the factors (e.g. nutrition, genetics) that determine height, economic discourses on how the average heights of populations have changed over time, sociobiological and psychological discourses that assume a pre-cultural, evolutionary “height premium”, and popular discourses on heightism and height discrimination. Drawing from a diverse range of scholarship since Saul Feldman called for a “sociology of stature” in the 1970s, I then …
