Racial health disparities are apparent in the field of dermatology across the United States. Certain dermatologic conditions are more likely to go undiagnosed in people with skin of color (SOC), leading to increased morbidity/mortality. Underrepresentation of darker skin tones in medical education may be a contributing factor. This study explores the ability and confidence of TUNCOM students to recognize dermatological conditions on various skin tones.

A 23 question survey was given to 173 second year students to examine their ability and confidence in identifying dermatologic conditions on non-SOC (Fitzpatrick I-III) and SOC (Fitzpatrick IV-VI). Images of common skin disorders on …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There is evidence that effective shelter can significantly improve lamb survival, but the majority of Australian studies have occurred in small paddocks where the ewes had no choice but to use shelter. In mixed farming systems with large open paddocks, it is unclear if ewes will choose to use shelter for lambing. Our multidisciplinary collaboration examines the use of woody shrubs as an opportunity to improve the survival of twin lambs. In a series of large experiments on commercial farms, we will evaluate the impact of different shrub planting configurations, orientations, and densities on microclimates at the sub-paddock scale. Twin-bearing …

Environmental Co-Benefits Of Improved Forages In Smallholder Dairy Systems Of Kenya, A. Notenbaert, S. Mwendia, S. Burkart, P. Karimi, E. Mwema

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Livestock play a major role across Kenya, especially in smallholder mixed farms through provision of household nutrition and income through milk and meat. Equally, fertilization of cropland benefits from livestock manure, and livestock often act as insurance and saving. Despite the opportunities and benefits livestock production presents, livestock systems are also key drivers of environmental degradation, including increased nutrient loads, GHG emissions, water use, grassland degradation and land-use conversion. Low livestock productivity, largely due to use of low-quality crop residues and natural grasses often not endowed with nutrients key for animal performance, limits the potential positive contributions of livestock and …

Teen Services In Public Libraries: A Bibliometric Research Study, Ashlee Lykansion

SLIS Connecting

Public libraries have an essential mission to offer high-quality services, programming, and materials to individuals across all age groups. While these institutions typically provide many programs and services catering to children and adults, teenage patrons' needs are often overlooked (Bernier et al, 2014). To rectify this, it is essential to establish dedicated spaces within the library tailored to teenagers' interests and preferences. By incorporating engaging programming and curating materials and resources specifically geared toward this demographic, libraries can effectively convey a message of inclusivity and appreciation, making teenagers feel welcome and valued (Joseph, 2010). The purpose of this research study …

The Pack Horse Library Initiative And Kentucky's Librarians In The Great Depression: An Academic Essay, Jessica Omer (University Of Missouri)

SLIS Connecting

The history of libraries is a complex story of ups and downs. There have been times in American history when libraries almost ceased to exist (Boyd, 2009). One of those moments was during the American Great Depression of the 1930s. During this time, American institutions failed, jobs disappeared, homes were lost, and American libraries began to disappear. This paper aims to discover the Pack Horse Library Project's role in Kentucky history and its legacy. This paper answers two questions—How did The Pack Horse Library Project save libraries in Kentucky? And how did women save library services in eastern Kentucky?—by exploring …

Convolutional Neural Network Based Analysis - An Aid To Diagnose Bacterial And Fungal Osteomyelitis, Saiprasad Alva, Dominic Augustine, Sowmya Sv, Mukul Saini, Sanjana Shetty

Annual Research Symposium

Osteomyelitis may be classified as Bacterial (Actinomycotic), Fungal (Mucormycotic), or combined based on the etiological agent. During histopathological examination, there is a high chance that bacterial colonies or fungal hyphae may be missed by the human eye, especially when there is a paucity of organisms. This may lead to a faulty diagnosis of the type of osteomyelitis which along with an improper treatment plan would cause further progression of the disease and various other complications. Therefore, the diagnosis of the exact etiological variant of osteomyelitis is of prime importance to design an appropriate treatment plan. In the present study, bone …

Pharmacist Interventions Increase Uptake Of Pneumonia Vaccination In At-Risk Populations: A Review., Kaitlyn Hinton

Annual Research Symposium

Pneumonia is a large burden to healthcare costs and a large cause of hospitalization (Hayes, BH. Chest. 2018, 153(2), 427), and bacterial pneumonia can be prevented through vaccination. While pediatric vaccinations are routinely given, an additional dose is required for adults 65+ years of age or otherwise immune compromised, including diabetics. Only 22.2% of Immunocompromised patients and 65% of the elderly population have received the extra dose (Hung, MC. CDC. 2022). With pharmacist interventions, these vaccination rates could increase significantly. The purpose of this study was to conduct a review of the literature to identify interventions that have yielded higher …
