The Shared Values Society: On The Inability To Validate Beliefs And Its Effect On Pluralistic Governance, Tanner L. Smith Feb 2024

The Shared Values Society: On The Inability To Validate Beliefs And Its Effect On Pluralistic Governance, Tanner L. Smith

Masters Theses

The nature of truth affects beliefs in such a way that all worldviews are left on a level playing field, each with no more of an objective claim to truth than any other. As a result, no one worldview has an intrinsic right to dominate the government or, through it, other worldviews. Furthermore, philosophical secularism’s noble notion of protecting individual freedoms by limiting the influence of moral values in the government has led to a loss of intergroup bonding and a value vacuum in public life. At the same time, because beliefs constitute some of the most profound aspects of …

Since less attention has been paid to the effect of passing blood pressure states on the survival of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, this study aimed to investigate the survival of PD patients with and without hypertension, estimate the probability of hypertension and determine the influential factors. In this retrospective cohort study, the data of 700 patients visiting dialysis centers from all provinces of Iran from 1997-2009 were analyzed. For data analysis, the multistate survival model was used. The median survival time (months) and five-year survival were 75% and 56%, respectively. Males had a higher probability of hypertension (63%) than females …

Transitioning Rn Residency Program: Implementing Medication Safety Education In Practice, Francine Lyon Feb 2024

Transitioning Rn Residency Program: Implementing Medication Safety Education In Practice, Francine Lyon

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Clinical nursing can affect a nurse's physical and mental well-being. The aging population stresses healthcare providers, including nurses, due to the increased comorbidities and medications needed to treat them. New graduate nurses (NGRNs) can enhance their success by completing a Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP). Despite residency programs, new nurses often find it challenging to meet the demands of clinical settings, leading to compromised patient outcomes and medication errors (MEs). Offering comprehensive medication administration education can reduce errors and discrepancies. Equipping new graduate nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills is crucial for improving patient outcomes and ensuring long-lasting nursing …

Recruitment And Retention In The Post-Floyd Era: A Phenomenological Study Of Miami-Dade County Law Enforcement, Carlos A. Vesco

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study employed a phenomenological approach to analyze law enforcement professionals' perspectives regarding police recruitment and retention in Miami-Dade County after the murder of George Floyd. The study focuses on two primary issues: the ongoing shortage of police officers and the absence of effective retention measures. The study’s theoretical approach is informed by the principles of transformational leadership theory and Herzberg’s two-factor motivation-hygiene theory. The research utilized a qualitative methodology, including face-to-face interviews with a total of twenty-nine participants from three police jurisdictions within Miami-Dade County. These individuals were selected based on their experience in the field. The data was …

The loss and degradation of forests and other ecosystems worldwide threaten both global biodiversity and the livelihoods of people who use natural resources. Understanding how natural resource use impacts landscape provisioning services for both people and wildlife is thus critical for designing comprehensive resource management strategies. We used data from community focus groups, botanical plots and an inventory of plant species consumed by the Critically Endangered red-ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) to assess the availability of key provisioning services for people and endemic wildlife on the Masoala Peninsula, a rainforest transformation landscape, in northeastern Madagascar (Masoala National Park and 13 surrounding …

For individuals in the LGBTQ community, the thought of religion or religious groups usually elicit some reaction. There are many both mainstream and fringe groups that have strong, anti-LGBTQ viewpoints. This often is hard for someone who was raised religious and finds comfort in the church. The purpose of the current research was to conduct a structured literature review on academic literature exploring a connection between LGBTQ and cults. I used the PRISMA methodology to examine this topic. While there were some interesting findings, I was unable to find extensive connections between the topics, especially in regards to cults. The …

A Conceptual Framework For Acceptance Of Autonomous Vehicle In Malaysia, Jen Sim Ho, Lily Yuzrina, Booi Chen Tan

International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting

Mobility is evolving globally. Automated vehicle technology is consistently advancing with the development of Artificial Intelligence and information communication technology. The Autonomous Vehicle is acknowledged with the benefits of reducing traffic fatalities, reduced emissions and convenience. If autonomous vehicles are widely adopted, the Sustainable Development Goals could be achieved. Various studies have been conducted to investigate the psychological factors (internal) as well as assess the efforts of institutions (external) in promoting the adoption of autonomous vehicles. Nonetheless, there is very few studies examined the impacts of internal and external factors on the acceptance of autonomous vehicles simultaneously. Therefore, this study …

A Qualitative Study Of Factors That Influence Entrepreneurial Intention Among Students Of Private Higher Education Institutions In Selangor, Kyra Law Ley Sy, Norizan Jaafar

International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting

Entrepreneurship as a field of study has different sub-dimensions due to its usefulness in society, which makes it difficult to gain a holistic understanding of its key due to practical applications. A shift in generations creates a different yet unique business environment, especially in new business ventures. Younger generations have a different view and insight about entrepreneurship in small business. Thus, this study aims to seek deeper insight into entrepreneurial behaviour and intention among younger generations. Twenty semi-structured interviews with students from a higher private university in Malaysia were performed using the qualitative method. Using Nvivo 12, the interviews' transcriptions …

Unpacking Qalb Behavioral Traits Through The Lens Of Maqasid Al-Shariah: A Pathway To Foster Inclusive Entrepreneurial Intentions In The Muslim Community, Mhd Louai Sarhan, Kamarulzaman Ab Aziz

International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting

In Malaysia, a worrisome trend is emerging as an increasing number of individuals find themselves trapped within the poverty bracket and the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) socioeconomic groups. To address the economic and social challenges faced by these marginalized communities and to contribute significantly to poverty reduction and overall well-being, inclusive entrepreneurship has emerged as a pivotal strategy. This study delves into the critical imperative of inclusive entrepreneurship, which often eludes existing quantitative measurements of societal well-being. These measurements frequently overlook the fundamental dimensions of social and psychological well-being inherent to inclusive entrepreneurship. Drawing from the Islamic framework of …

Toxicity And Risk Of Biopesticides To Insect Pollinators In Urban And Agricultural Landscapes, Joshua Chavana, Neelendra K. Joshi Feb 2024

Toxicity And Risk Of Biopesticides To Insect Pollinators In Urban And Agricultural Landscapes, Joshua Chavana, Neelendra K. Joshi

Entomology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Pollinators play important roles in providing pollination services, maintaining biodiversity, and boosting crop production. Even though pollinators are essential to the environment and agriculture, their decline has been noted across multiple studies in the recent past. Both natural and anthropogenic factors have contributed to their decline. Much of the focus has been placed on climate change, habitat loss, pests and pathogens, and synthetic pesticides, but relatively little is known about the effects of biopesticides. Biopesticides are biological control agents derived from living organisms and are classified into three groups: microbial, biochemical, and plant-incorporated protectant-based products. Biopesticides are formulated similarly to …

Cost Shifting For E-Discovery: A Suggested Reform, Matthew Reiber Feb 2024

Cost Shifting For E-Discovery: A Suggested Reform, Matthew Reiber

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Rule 54(d) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure gives the district courts discretion to award the prevailing party its litigation costs (other than attorney’s fees) to the extent permitted by 28 U.S.C. § 1920 (“Section 1920”). The amounts involved are sometimes modest, and always a fraction of total litigation expenses, causing courts to candidly acknowledge the mismatch between the two. The disparity can be especially pronounced in cases involving e-discovery because courts typically construe the words “making copies” in Section 1920(4) very narrowly and allow recovery for only those e-discovery activities that are analogous to photocopying paper documents. This …

Give Me Liberty Or Give Me The Source Code: Challenging A Black-Box Computer Algorithm Under Daubert, Natalie Murphy

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Would you trust an entrepreneur who offered to sell you a truthtelling machine, but refused to tell you how it worked? Elizabeth Holmes persuaded investors to sink $700 million into her health tech company, Theranos, with a simple promise: she had invented a machine that could do the impossible. Holmes claimed her invention, a literal black box called an Edison, could run more than two hundred diagnostic tests in under an hour using only a single drop of blood. The Edison purportedly represented “a Holy Grail in the field of microfluidics.” Theranos was going to revolutionize healthcare and change the …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive, heterogeneous disease with genomic subtypes that are increasingly treated differently. There is a growing interest in going beyond mutations and cytogenetics to stratify AML. Recent work has combined proteomics,1 signaling,2,3 or immunophenotypes4 with integrated genomic-transcriptomic measurements to improve AML risk classifications.5 Although invaluable as resources, such approaches can neither extend retroactively to existing repositories nor prospectively to new AML cases lacking these data types. We sought to develop a more extensible approach involving sphingolipids (Figure 1A), a family of bioactive molecules implicated in AML pathogenesis and therapeutic resistance6,7 that differentially regulate cell proliferation,8 …

INTRODUCTION: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have made a paradigm shift in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, clinical response varies widely and robust predictive biomarkers for patient stratification are lacking. Here, we characterize early on-treatment proteomic changes in blood plasma to gain a better understanding of treatment response and resistance.

METHODS: Pre-treatment (T0) and on-treatment (T1) plasma samples were collected from 225 NSCLC patients receiving PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor-based regimens. Plasma was profiled using aptamer-based technology to quantify approximately 7000 plasma proteins per sample. Proteins displaying significant fold changes (T1:T0) were analyzed further to identify associations with clinical outcomes using …
