Why Would She Post That?! Examining The Role Of Social Media Evidence In The "Real Rape" Paradigm, Madison Rose Lord
Why Would She Post That?! Examining The Role Of Social Media Evidence In The "Real Rape" Paradigm, Madison Rose Lord
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The successful prosecution of perpetrators of sexual violence is notoriously difficult. As societal reliance on technology and online communications increases, digital evidence is becoming a common component in sexual assault investigations and prosecutions. To date, empirical research on digital evidence used in sexual assault trials is limited, but social media evidence may meet the seemingly insurmountable burden of proof necessary to prove a “real” sexual assault took place. However, the interpretation of such evidence is ultimately filtered through one’s cultural biases and stereotypes. Thus, it is important to investigate how rape supportive and sexist ideologies may impact the perceptions of …

Violence Across The Family System: Examining The Direct And Intergenerational Effects Of Violence Victimization On Youth’S Social Competence, Taylor Rae Napier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Background: Mothers’ experiences of childhood violence (CV) and adulthood intimate partner violence (IPV) are linked with poorer social emotional functioning in their offspring. Little work has concurrently examined the associations between mothers’ CV, mothers’ adulthood IPV, youth’s own direct violence victimization (physical and sexual assault), and youth’s perceptions of maternal IPV on youth’s social competence. Further, family-based promotive factors, such as open mother-child communication, may affect youth’s social competence following violence exposure. Method: This study included 162 mother-child dyads from community organizations serving families in the MidSouth, United States; all mothers (Mage=35.24, SD=6.70; 80.7% Black or African American) reported IPV …

Genome-wide association studies of human personality have been carried out, but transcription of the whole genome has not been studied in relation to personality in humans. We collected genome-wide expression profiles of adults to characterize the regulation of expression and function in genes related to human personality. We devised an innovative multi-omic approach to network analysis to identify the key control elements and interactions in multi-modular networks. We identified sets of transcribed genes that were co-expressed in specific brain regions with genes known to be associated with personality. Then we identified the minimum networks for the co-localized genes using bioinformatic …

Mood Disorders In Adults With Epilepsy: A Review Of Unrecognized Facts And Common Misconceptions, Am Kanner, R Shankar, Ng Margraf, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic conditions. Its clinical manifestations are not restricted to seizures but often include cognitive disturbances and psychiatric disorders. Prospective population-based studies have shown that people with epilepsy have an increased risk of developing mood disorders, and people with a primary mood disorder have an increased risk of developing epilepsy. The existence of common pathogenic mechanisms in epilepsy and mood disorders may explain the bidirectional relation between these two conditions. Recognition of a personal and family psychiatric history at the time of evaluation of people for a seizure disorder is critical in the selection …

Enhancing Pharmaceutical Waste Management: Insights From Pharmacists' Perspectives On The Drug Take-Back Program, Mona Daher
Theses
Pharmaceutical waste management is essential for mitigating environmental risks associated with improper medication disposal, with pharmacists playing a pivotal role in drug take-back programs (DTBPs). However, there is limited understanding of pharmacists' engagement, perceptions, and challenges within these initiatives. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating these aspects among licensed pharmacists in the United States. A mixed-methods survey was distributed to 2200 pharmacists, yielding 81 responses (3.7% response rate). The findings revealed that familiarity with DTBPs did not significantly differ by state or practice setting, but positively correlated with experience and perceived effectiveness. Interestingly, on-the-job learning emerged as …
The Cultural Relevance Of The Well-Being Promotion Program, Gabrielle Francis
The Cultural Relevance Of The Well-Being Promotion Program, Gabrielle Francis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Schools are well-situated to be a primary setting to provide mental health services to youth. In fact, most minoritized students who receive mental health services do so through school (Ali et al., 2019). However, even school-based mental health services are not equitably accessed and provided for diverse populations of students, and minoritized students are less likely to have their mental health needs met in schools (Gudiño et al., 2009; Thomas et al., 2011). There are several reasons for the disparity in mental health services amongst students including the cultural relevance of interventions (Santiago-Rosario et al., 2021) and the early departure …

Background
RARS2-related mitochondrial disorder is an autosomal recessive mitochondrial encephalopathy caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the gene encoding the mitochondrial arginyl-transfer RNA synthetase 2 (RARS2, MIM *611524, NM_020320.5). RARS2 catalyzes the transfer of L-arginine to its cognate tRNA during the translation of mitochondrially-encoded proteins. The classical presentation of RARS2-related mitochondrial disorder includes pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH), progressive microcephaly, profound developmental delay, feeding difficulties, and hypotonia. Most patients also develop severe epilepsy by three months of age, which consists of focal or generalized seizures that frequently become pharmacoresistant and lead to developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE). …

Multi-omics approaches, which integrate genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, have emerged as powerful tools in the diagnosis of rare diseases. We used untargeted metabolomics and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to gain a more comprehensive understanding of a rare disease with a complex presentation affecting female twins from a consanguineous family. The sisters presented with polymicrogyria, a Dandy–Walker malformation, respiratory distress, and multiorgan dysfunctions. Through WGS, we identified two rare homozygous variants in both subjects, a pathogenic variant in ADGRG1(p.Arg565Trp) and a novel variant in CNTNAP1(p.Glu910Val). These genes have been previously associated with autosomal recessive polymicrogyria and hypomyelinating neuropathy with/without …

UNLABELLED: Lipid metabolism plays a central role in prostate cancer. To date, the major focus has centered on de novo lipogenesis and lipid uptake in prostate cancer, but inhibitors of these processes have not benefited patients. A better understanding of how cancer cells access lipids once they are created or taken up and stored could uncover more effective strategies to perturb lipid metabolism and treat patients. Here, we identified that expression of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), an enzyme that controls lipid droplet homeostasis and a previously suspected tumor suppressor, correlates with worse overall survival in men with advanced, castration-resistant prostate …

Over the past 4 decades, the clinical care of people living with HIV (PLWH) evolved from treatment of acute opportunistic infections to the management of chronic, noncommunicable comorbidities. Concurrently, our understanding of adipose tissue function matured to acknowledge its important endocrine contributions to energy balance. PLWH experience changes in the mass and composition of adipose tissue depots before and after initiating antiretroviral therapy, including regional loss (lipoatrophy), gain (lipohypertrophy), or mixed lipodystrophy. These conditions may coexist with generalized obesity in PLWH and reflect disturbances of energy balance regulation caused by HIV persistence and antiretroviral therapy drugs. Adipocyte hypertrophy characterizes visceral …

IMPORTANCE: Lack of timely follow-up of cancer-related abnormal test results can lead to delayed or missed diagnoses, adverse cancer outcomes, and substantial cost burden for patients. Care delivery models, such as the Veterans Affairs' (VA) Patient-Aligned Care Team (PACT), which aim to improve patient-centered care coordination, could potentially also improve timely follow-up of abnormal test results. PACT was implemented nationally in the VA between 2010 and 2012.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term association between PACT implementation and timely follow-up of abnormal test results related to the diagnosis of 5 different cancers.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multiyear retrospective cohort study …

Hydrocephalus (HC) is a heterogenous disease characterized by alterations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics that may cause increased intracranial pressure. HC is a component of a wide array of genetic syndromes as well as a secondary consequence of brain injury (intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), infection, etc.) that can present across the age spectrum, highlighting the phenotypic heterogeneity of the disease. Surgical treatments include ventricular shunting and endoscopic third ventriculostomy with or without choroid plexus cauterization, both of which are prone to failure, and no effective pharmacologic treatments for HC have been developed. Thus, there is an urgent need to understand the …

The Journal of Social Encounters
Fr. Nicolas Djomo Lola was appointed a bishop in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 1997 and immediately was thrust into a brutal war between Rwanda, Burundi and Zaire that lasted through 2003. That conflict exacerbated deadly ethnic conflicts in the eastern provinces of the Congo that continue to this day. Bishop Djomo, driven by his belief that Jesus Christ calls all people to build peace, and protect people from violence responded to this war and chaos in remarkable ways. He led a delegation of the Central Africa Bishops to advocate with the Presidents of Burundi, Rwanda and …

Relational Leadership And Governing: Somali Clan Cultural Leadership, Farhia Abdi
The Journal of Social Encounters
This research is focused on exploring the distinction between theories of leadership and more contemporary visions of relational leading.
