Marrero Torres, Ahmad Abulawi, Talia Malik, Dushyant Singh Dahiya, Mariajose Rojas Deleon, Amelia Roebuck, Neil Sharma

PCI Publications and Projects

Background and Aims

Achalasia is an esophageal motility disorder characterized by the inability of the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. Endoscopic methods are currently the mainstay treatment of achalasia and include local administration of botulinum toxin (Botox; Allergan Aesthetics, Westport, County Mayo, Ireland), pneumatic dilation, and peroral endoscopic myotomy. Botox injections traditionally have been performed by standard endoscopy, which lacks precision requiring frequent interventions. Our study introduces a novel technique using endoscopic ultrasound—guided fine-needle injection of Botox combined with controlled radial expansion balloon dilation (EUS-BTID) for treating achalasia. We hypothesize that this combined approach will enhance the efficacy and offer …

Trauma And The Use Of Formal And Informal Resources In The Deaf Population: Perspectives From Mental Health Service Providers, Stephanie W. Cawthon, Bentley W. Fink, Paige Johnson, Sarah Schoffstall, Erica Wendel

JADARA

Using grounded theory analysis, the current study identifies the perspectives of therapists and counselors regarding the nature of informal and formal resources supporting the treatment of deaf individuals with trauma. Nineteen counselors and therapists were interviewed, and accessibility, formal support, informal networks, and gaps in resources were identified as salient themes. Subsequent analysis identified concerns with confidentiality as a strong theme. This study emphasizes the need for counselors and therapists to become mindful of utilizing resources to support the treatment of trauma while being concerned with confidentiality.

The Rise In Stunting In Relation To Avian Influenza And Food Consumption Patterns In Lower Egypt In Comparison To Upper Egypt: Results From 2005 And 2008 Demographic And Health Surveys, Justine A. Kavle, Fatima El-Zanaty, Megan Landry, Rae Galloway Dec 214

The Rise In Stunting In Relation To Avian Influenza And Food Consumption Patterns In Lower Egypt In Comparison To Upper Egypt: Results From 2005 And 2008 Demographic And Health Surveys, Justine A. Kavle, Fatima El-Zanaty, Megan Landry, Rae Galloway

Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications

Background

A 2006 avian influenza (AI) outbreak resulted in mass removal of chickens in Lower Egypt, which decreased the household supply of poultry. Poultry, a key animal-source food, contains nutrients critical for child growth. This paper examines determinants of stunting between 2006 and 2008 in children 6 to 59 months of age within the context of the AI outbreak.

Methods

The 2005 and 2008 nationally representative Egypt Demographic and Health Surveys (EDHS) were used to analyse anthropometric data from 7,794 children in 2005 and 6,091 children in 2008. Children, 6–59 months of age, with length for age Z-score < −2 S.D. were categorized as stunted. Predictors of stunting were examined by bivariate and multivariable analyses, focusing on Lower Egypt, where a rise in stunting occurred, and Upper Egypt, where stunting declined.

The Schemes Of Adventuresses: The Abolition And Revival Of Common-Law Marriage, Charlotte K. Goldberg Feb 207

The Schemes Of Adventuresses: The Abolition And Revival Of Common-Law Marriage, Charlotte K. Goldberg

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Common-law marriage is about to go the way of the buggy whip. In 2005, Pennsylvania abolished common-law marriage and other state legislatures are considering following Pennsylvania's lead. Even if common-law marriage is abolished in all states, the problem of unmarried cohabitants seeking property rights arising from their relationships will still challenge the courts. In particular, because most claimants are women, the perception of them as either an "adventuress" or a "virtuous wife" will often determine whether they will attain shared property rights.

This article uses the California experience as an illustration of the evolution of the law from the abolition …

Essentially A Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks Feb 207

Essentially A Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This article connects the constitutional jurisprudence of the family to debates over reproductive technology and surrogacy. Despite the outpouring of literature on reproductive technologies, courts and scholars have paid little attention to the constitutional foundation of parental rights. Focusing on the structural/political function of parental rights, this article argues that a gestational mother has a constitutional claim to be recognized as a legal parent.

The article first discusses the "unwed father cases." Despite believing that natural sex differences justified distinctions in parental rights, the Supreme Court crafted a test giving men parental rights if they established relationships with their biological …

Proptosis Of Eye: An Atypical Presentation Of Prostatic Malignancy., Amna Amjad, Asif Husain Osmani, Ghulam H

Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care

Orbital metastasis is a rare occurrence found only in about 3 - 10% of all prostate cancers. A 72 years male presented with proptosis of the left eye associated with pain, blurred vision and frequent headaches for the past 8 months. Past medical history had symptoms of bladder outflow obstruction for 3 years. MRI brain and orbit with contrast was consistent with a large soft tissue mass in the left frontal region. The mass was surgically excised in order to achieve palliation. Histopathology revealed poorly differentiated malignant neoplasm with immunohistochemistry favoring metastatic prostate carcinoma. Postoperative radiotherapy was administered with a …

The Aerosphere As A Network Connector Of Organisms And Their Diseases, Jeremy D. Ross, Eli S. Bridge, Diann J. Prosser, John Y. Takekawa Dec 200

The Aerosphere As A Network Connector Of Organisms And Their Diseases, Jeremy D. Ross, Eli S. Bridge, Diann J. Prosser, John Y. Takekawa

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration. We use an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the …

Wearable Electrochemical Sensors For Monitoring Performance Athletes, Kevin J. Fraser, Vincenzo F. Curtin, Shirley Coyle, Benjamin Schazmann, Robert Byrne, Fernando Benito-Lopez, Roisin M. Owens, George C. Malliaras, Dermot Diamond

Conference Papers

Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting. In particular, the true potential of wearable chemical sensors, which for the real-time ambulatory monitoring of bodily fluids such as tears, sweat, urine and blood has not been realized. Here we present a brief introduction into the fields of ionogels and organic electrochemical transistors, and in particular, the concept of an OECT transistor incorporated into a sticking-plaster, along with a printable “ionogel” to provide a wearable biosensor …

Heightened Uncertainty And Determination: The “Trump Effect” And College Aspirations For Undocumented Students, Carolina Valdivia, Marisol Clark-Ibáñez, Lucas Schacht, Juan Duran, Sussana Mendoza

Journal of College Access

This article examines the educational experiences of undocumented high school students during the Trump administration—a time marked by the intensification and expansion of immigration enforcement practices. Drawing on 24 in-depth interviews, we find that undocumented high school students experienced increased instances of bullying near the time of the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Our respondents also worried about the growing uncertainty surrounding immigration policies and the future of DACA. This uncertainty shaped their plans; many students felt compelled to prioritize working and delay starting college to make use of their work permit while they had access to DACA and build emergency …

Replicating Single-Cycle Adenovirus Vectors Generate Amplified Influenza Vaccine Responses, Catherine M. Crosby, William E. Matchett, Stephanie S. Anguiano-Zarate, Christopher A. Parks, Eric A. Weaver, Larry R. Pease, Richard J. Webby, Michael A. Barry Dec 200

Replicating Single-Cycle Adenovirus Vectors Generate Amplified Influenza Vaccine Responses, Catherine M. Crosby, William E. Matchett, Stephanie S. Anguiano-Zarate, Christopher A. Parks, Eric A. Weaver, Larry R. Pease, Richard J. Webby, Michael A. Barry

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Head-to-head comparisons of conventional influenza vaccines with adenovirus (Ad) gene-based vaccines demonstrated that these viral vectors can mediate more potent protection against influenza virus infection in animal models. In most cases, Ad vaccines are engineered to be replication-defective (RD-Ad) vectors. In contrast, replication-competent Ad (RC-Ad) vaccines are markedly more potent but risk causing adenovirus diseases in vaccine recipients and health care workers. To harness antigen gene replication but avoid production of infectious virions, we developed “single-cycle” adenovirus (SC-Ad) vectors. Previous work demonstrated that SC-Ads amplify transgene expression 100-fold and produce markedly stronger and more persistent immune responses than RD-Ad vectors …
