Student Perspectives On Assignment Deadline Policies In Computer Science Courses, J. Kim, Christian Murphy
Student Perspectives On Assignment Deadline Policies In Computer Science Courses, J. Kim, Christian Murphy
Computer Science Faculty Works
While the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged higher education to be more flexible, there is now growing uncertainty regarding the usefulness of flexibility as students return to in-person classes, particularly in fast-paced, rigorous fields such as Computer Science (CS). A big part of providing flexibility in education is through assignment deadlines. On one hand, flexible deadline policies may reduce student stress, help students face unexpected circumstances, and improve student learning; on the other, too much flexibility may lead to procrastination and poor time management. In order to help CS instructors make informed decisions when choosing an assignment deadline policy, we compared student …

Women's Reproductive Health: A Critical Appraisal Of Reproductive Justice And Magisterial Contributions To Responsible Family Planning, Kelly Olson
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
History reveals the degrading and traumatizing experiences of marginalized women harmed by unethical reproductive healthcare practices. Progress has been made; however divisive barriers still prohibit dialogue from resulting in a dignified approach to legislation that serves the diverse population of women in diverse situations of lived reality. Enhancing the theological dialogue with updated awareness of women’s reproductive healthcare needs and a renewed conversation of the benefit of expressed human sexuality in heterosexual marriage allows opportunity for the Magisterium to enhance teaching that aligns with Catholic tradition and grows with human understanding, in the spirit of aggiornamento. Improved clarity and wider …
Lsd To Galilee: Incarnation In The Psychedelic Subculture, Rob Zahn
Lsd To Galilee: Incarnation In The Psychedelic Subculture, Rob Zahn
Doctor of Ministry
This project is the result of a curiosity that there might be an opportunity (NPO) for the church, for everyone, to “learn how God is incarnate and works outside of the parameters of the church as evidenced by the birth of Contemporary Christian Music from the psychedelic hippie subculture of the late ’60s and early ’70s.” From a theological perspective, the answer might be obvious. Of course God is incarnate and works outside of any and all parameters humanity attempts to impose on the divine! However, what rises to the surface when such questions are engaged, is the extent to …

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Mulching practice offers farmers an opportunity to minimize the effects of drought, water loss, and soil erosion on crop production. Plastic film is widely used as a mulching material; however, contamination of arable lands by residual plastic has become a serious concern. Synthetic biodegradable mulch films and sprays may offer a more sustainable alternative to plastic films, however current evidence on the factors that influence the suitability of these products for agricultural applications is fragmented, making it unclear under what conditions these products meet agronomic, environmental, and societal needs. We address this gap by conducting a systematic review of studies …

Knowledge, Attitudes, And Beliefs Toward Third Hand Smoke, Gisele Tah
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Third hand smoke (THS) is gaining significant interest in the environmental and public health fields as a new but dangerous phenomenon. THS is identified as a form of passive smoke consisting of residual nicotine and chemicals that settle on surfaces. THS is reported to be genotoxic in human cells, yet the public has limited or no knowledge of this new concept. The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive, descriptive study was to discover and describe the level of knowledge, attitudes, practices, and beliefs regarding THS among individuals in an eastern U.S. state. Social cognitive theory provided the theoretical framework for this …
Understanding Adherence To Prescribed Medical Regimen To Treat Hypertension Among African American Males, Yolanda Lucian George
Understanding Adherence To Prescribed Medical Regimen To Treat Hypertension Among African American Males, Yolanda Lucian George
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hypertension is referred to as the silent killer and has been for decades. African Americans have been affected disproportionately compared to Whites, leading to a significant medical and financial burden. The literature has demonstrated that even though African Americans have a similar or better awareness of hypertension, they are more likely to have poorer treatment outcomes and have their hypertension less controlled. In this study, the health belief model and the ecological social model were used as the guiding framework to understand this phenomenon. In this qualitative study, semistructured interviews were used to explore and understand the perception of adherence …

Along with the growing number of students with disabilities in higher education comes an opportunity to explore the difficulties they experience, especially in the post-pandemic era, as well as how to better support them, thus making post-secondary education more inclusive. A considerable amount of research has been done in providing accommodation for students with physical disabilities, but other hindrances to accessibility such as mental health conditions are prone to be overlooked, perhaps in part due to the stigmatization and subjective invisibility of this topic, specifically in rigorous, competitive fields such as Computer Science (CS). In order to bridge this gap, …
Dna Barcoding Methodologies For The Identification Of Fish Species In Cooked Products, Rosalee S. Hellberg
Dna Barcoding Methodologies For The Identification Of Fish Species In Cooked Products, Rosalee S. Hellberg
Food Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) barcoding is a sequencing-based method that utilizes a standardized genetic region to identify species in combination with a reference database. DNA barcoding methodologies have been extensively applied to the identification of species in cooked seafood. While the typical genetic target associated with DNA barcoding is a ~650-bp region of the gene coding for cytochrome (cyt) c oxidase subunit I (COI), additional genetic targets include partial regions of the cyt b and 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) genes. Most categories of cooked seafood can be identified using ~400- to 700-bp regions of these genes; however, canned seafood and …

Faculty Research 2024
Kdm1a is a histone demethylase linked to intellectual disability with essential roles during gastrulation and the terminal differentiation of specialized cell types, including neurons, that remains highly expressed in the adult brain. To explore Kdm1a's function in adult neurons, we develop inducible and forebrain-restricted Kdm1a knockouts. By applying multi-omic transcriptome, epigenome and chromatin conformation data, combined with super-resolution microscopy, we find that Kdm1a elimination causes the neuronal activation of nonneuronal genes that are silenced by the polycomb repressor complex and interspersed with active genes. Functional assays demonstrate that the N-terminus of Kdm1a contains an intrinsically disordered region that is essential …

Stress-induced fetal programming diminishes β2 adrenergic tone, which coincides with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and lifelong metabolic dysfunction. We determined if stimulating β2 adrenergic activity in IUGR-born lambs would improve metabolic outcomes. IUGR lambs that received daily injections of saline or the β2 agonist clenbuterol from birth to 60 days were compared with controls from pair-fed thermoneutral pregnancies. As juveniles, IUGR lambs exhibited systemic inflammation and robust metabolic dysfunction, including greater (p < 0.05) circulating TNF, IL-6, and non-esterified fatty acids, increased (p < 0.05) intramuscular glycogen, reduced (p < 0.05) circulating IGF-1, hindlimb blood flow, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, and muscle glucose oxidation. Daily clenbuterol fully recovered (p < 0.05) circulating TNF, IL-6, and nonesterified fatty acids, hindlimb blood flow, muscle glucose oxidation, and intramuscular glycogen. Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion was partially recovered (p < 0.05) in clenbuterol-treated IUGR lambs, but circulating IGF-1 was not improved. Circulating triglycerides and HDL cholesterol were elevated (p < 0.05) in clenbuterol-treated IUGR lambs, despite being normal in untreated IUGR lambs. We conclude that deficient β2 adrenergic regulation is a primary mechanism for several components of metabolic dysfunction in IUGR-born offspring and thus represents a potential therapeutic target for improving metabolic outcomes. Moreover, benefits from the β2 agonist were likely complemented by its suppression of IUGR-associated inflammation.
The Art Of Avoiding Strategic Miscalculation, Steven W. Knott
The Art Of Avoiding Strategic Miscalculation, Steven W. Knott
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This examination of British War Secretary George Cornewall Lewis and the gold standard memorandum he penned in 1862 (that proved instrumental in preventing British intervention in the American Civil War) offers insights for modern leaders on how to avoid institutional barriers to effective strategic thinking and political-strategic miscalculation through insightful analysis of potential liabilities and policy assumptions. It shows how outstanding strategic thinkers possess an informed and reflective filter to evaluate past, present, and anticipated events—developed through a good education, diverse practical experience, lifelong intellectual curiosity, empowerment, and access to senior leadership.

Metatranscriptomic Insights Into The Interaction Between Microcystis Blooms And Hydrogen Peroxide, Taylor L. Hancock
Metatranscriptomic Insights Into The Interaction Between Microcystis Blooms And Hydrogen Peroxide, Taylor L. Hancock
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For this dissertation I studied the interactions of hydrogen peroxide and cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) dominated by Microcystis in the Caloosahatchee River, FL. Specifically, I examined how taxonomic and functional succession relates to both natural hydrogen peroxide dynamics and hydrogen peroxide added to the environment as a cHAB treatment. Chapter 2 investigated how taxonomic succession and gene expression patterns relate to blooms and associated elevated hydrogen peroxide concentrations. The results showed that gene expressions related to cyanobacterial growth were positively correlated with hydrogen peroxide. The genes identified included enzymes capable of hydrogen peroxide generation which were expressed by blooming …

Shellfish harvesting is central to coastal Alaska Native ways of life, and tribes in Southeast Alaska are committed to preserving sustainable and safe access to subsistence foods. However, consumption of non-commercially harvested shellfish puts Alaska Native communities at elevated risk of exposure to shellfish toxins. To address a lack of state or federal toxin testing for subsistence and recreational harvesting, tribes across Southeast Alaska have formed their own toxin testing and ocean monitoring program. In this study, we interviewed environmental managers responsible for tribes' testing and others with shellfish toxin expertise to report on perceptions of barriers to tribally led …

Improving Adjunct Nursing Instructors' Knowledge Of Student Assessment In Clinical Courses, Kelly Vowell Johnson
Dissertations
Utilization of adjunct nursing instructors to teach clinical courses is a common occurrence in nursing programs. Adjunct clinical instructors are often expert clinicians, but they have limited experience in teaching and lack the expertise needed to be successful in the educator role, such as knowledge of student assessment. Faculty development programs that focus on student assessment can provide adjunct clinical faculty members with the necessary knowledge to become effective educators and ensure student, faculty, and program success.
The purpose of this study was to examine to what extent a faculty development workshop on evaluating students in clinical courses affected adjunct …
