Dear John We have received your letter from Madison. I was a little surprised to know you had left Prairie du Chin, as you did not say any thing about it. However I hope the change eill prove beneficial to you both as regards your health and education. I think you would be sorry to leave the family you boarded with on account of their kindness to you - but I hope it will be your lot to meet with kind friends at Madison too - friends that will do as they say. [07] Elizabeth Grimes, Letter, Death, And Mourning, Elizabeth S. Grimes Dec 1860

[07] Elizabeth Grimes, Letter, Death, And Mourning, Elizabeth S. Grimes

Iowa Documents Class Projects

This is a letter from Elizabeth Grimes, wife of James Grimes, she’s sending it in response to recently learning about the death of another friend. In this letter, she is saying kind words about her virtuous late friend, religion, and sheds light on the process of mourning in the Victorian era of America. Additionally, there is some information about the state of the government at the time as the letter is written just 15 days before the secession of South Carolina from the Union and 4 months before the beginning of the civil war.
