What Are Those Plants Doing Out There? Developing A Protocol To Assess Natural Area Function, Christa Von Behren
What Are Those Plants Doing Out There? Developing A Protocol To Assess Natural Area Function, Christa Von Behren
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
The Revegetation Program at the Bureau of Environmental Services aims to use a resilience-based adaptive management approach to steward natural areas, but we have lacked an adequate monitoring protocol to effectively implement this approach. We spent three years developing a functional assessment protocol to assess progress toward management goals and to infer performance of different ecological functions. Our goal was to create a protocol to evaluate progress toward multiple goals across habitat types, be quick enough to fit into busy schedules, and detailed enough to see change over time. We developed the functional assessment over three years from 2019 through …

Emerald Ash Borer: Our Community's First Response, Victor Vasquez-Ibarra, Maura Olivos, Janet Silva- Villanueva, Mariana Valenzuela
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
When natural resource (NR) threats like Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) come to regions it is not uncommon for events to pass through underserved and vulnerable communities unbeknownst. For many communities, the lack of awareness is due to barriers like language access, non-prioritization of information sharing, or other life priorities. Before long, the impacts are realized with little understanding as to why or how, bringing greater disparity. Proactively working first with underserved and vulnerable communities helps dismantle barriers that delay awareness of threats like EAB and will empower people to prepare, respond, and build resiliency for future NR issues. One such …
Why Is The Oaks Bottom Reservoir So Dead And Brown? A Success Story Of Purple Loosestrife Control, Laura Guderyahn
Why Is The Oaks Bottom Reservoir So Dead And Brown? A Success Story Of Purple Loosestrife Control, Laura Guderyahn
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
Ever since the early 1990’s, when a water control structure was used to flood the 60acre ponded wetland at Oaks Bottom to increase waterfowl overwintering habitat, Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) has thrived. Starting in 2008, Portland Parks and Recreation (PPR) and the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) partnered with the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) to annually release thousands of three different species of biocontrol beetles throughout the wetland. However, the unnatural flooding regime due to the water control structure and a greatly undersized culvert connecting the refuge to the Willamette River, resulted in annual reproductive and overwintering …

Narrowing From Below: How Lower Courts Can Limit Castro-Huerta, Michaela B. Parks
Arkansas Law Review
This Note will offer a plan for how Indian country can move forward in the wake of what anti-tribal sovereignty entities want to be a devasting decision. This Note advocates for a judicial remedy plan. Specifically, it calls upon lower courts to narrow Castro-Huerta from below to limit the effects of the decision. Part II provides a brief introduction to federal Indian law, a general overview of criminal jurisdiction in Indian country, and concludes with a summary of Castro-Huerta. Part III outlines two approaches to limiting that lower courts can use to narrow Castro-Huerta from below: textual limiting and fact-to-fact …

Kidfluencers: New Child Stars In Need Of Protection, Mikayla B. Jayroe
Arkansas Law Review
Despite the explosive growth of social media and various lobbying efforts, the legal system has fallen woefully behind in extending labor protections to children engaged in social media production. This Comment will offer a solution to the current gray area surrounding kidfluencers and the lack of protections they are afforded. First, this Comment will discuss the emergence and growth of the kidfluencer industry and explore the legal history of child labor laws in the United States, specifically evaluating protections historically provided to child actors. Second, this Comment will explain why posts by kidfluencers should be considered work, explore the harms …
Hiding In Plain Sight: How Corporations Can Save The National Park Service, Emily H. Rector
Hiding In Plain Sight: How Corporations Can Save The National Park Service, Emily H. Rector
Arkansas Law Review
Since its inception, the privatization of the National Park Service has been a concern amongst conservationists. Recently, the topic gained more attention as the Trump Administration advocated for privatizing certain aspects of the parks. The dual purpose of the National Park Service, that of conservation and recreational efforts, has created conflict throughout the years. This Comment argues that Congress should update how the National Park Service manages concessioners. Full privatization is not needed, nor do private companies need to be kicked out of the parks. Part II of this Comment will present a history of the National Park Service, focusing …
Resilient Cities And The Housing Trust, Marc L. Roark, Lorna Fox O'Mahony
Resilient Cities And The Housing Trust, Marc L. Roark, Lorna Fox O'Mahony
Arkansas Law Review
In the 1970’s, cities across the United States faced new obstacles due to the deterioration of public infrastructure. Public housing projects that were built through federal housing initiatives were reaching the end of their lives after less than twenty years of being in service. Over the last forty years, cities in the United States have turned increasingly to housing trust funds to address the conjoined problems of the withdrawal of federal resources dedicated to affordable housing provision, and insufficient public housing infrastructure. In this Article we focus on the emergence of the Housing Trust as a vehicle for shoring up …

Close Contacts Of Xenograft Recipients: Ethical Considerations Due To Risk Of Xenozoonosis, Daniel J Hurst, Luz Padilla, Daniel Rodger, Tamar Schiff, David K C Cooper
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
With decades of pre-clinical studies culminating in the recent clinical application of xenotransplantation, it would appear timely to provide recommendations for operationalizing oversight of xenotransplantation clinical trials. Ethical issues with clinical xenotransplantation have been described for decades, largely centering on animal welfare, the risks posed to the recipient, and public health risks posed by potential spread of xenozoonosis. Much less attention has been given to considerations relating to potentially elevated risks faced by those who may care for or otherwise have close contact with xenograft recipients. This paper examines the ethical and logistical issues raised by the potential exposure to …

Black Male Counselors’ Experiences Navigating Client-Initiated Microaggressions In Cross-Cultural Therapeutic Dyads, Crystal Smith
Black Male Counselors’ Experiences Navigating Client-Initiated Microaggressions In Cross-Cultural Therapeutic Dyads, Crystal Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black male counselors working in the United States often face a unique set of challenges as the history of racism, discrimination, and prejudice that has plagued the United States also occurs in therapeutic spaces. Recent research has brought awareness to the existence of client-initiated microaggressions in therapy, but training on how to adequately address those microaggressions is lacking. Black male counselors have reported issues with knowing how to protect their own needs and maintaining a positive therapeutic relationship with their clients while addressing these microaggressions as they are required to hold space for their clients despite any emotional distress or …

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations
BACKGROUND: Conventional, non-specific preventive migraine treatments often demonstrate low rates of treatment persistence due to poor efficacy or tolerability. Effective, well-tolerated preventive treatments are needed to reduce migraine symptoms, improve function, and enhance quality of life. Atogepant is a migraine-specific oral calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonist that is indicated for the preventive treatment of migraine in adults. This analysis evaluated the safety and tolerability profile of atogepant for the preventive treatment of migraine, including adverse events (AEs) of interest, such as constipation, nausea, hepatic safety, weight changes, and cardiac disorders.
METHODS: This post hoc analysis was performed using data pooled …

Reclaiming The Symbol: Ethics, Rhetoric, And The Humanistic Integration Of Gai - A Burkean Perspective, Daniel Plate, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study delves into the intersection of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and the Humanities, guided by the critical insights of Kenneth Burke, a seminal figure in the study of rhetoric and a vocal critic of scientism and positivism. The skepticism of the American literary theorist towards an uncritical embrace of science and technology, and his concerns over the inclination of the Humanities to adopt scientific methodologies at the expense of traditional forms of inquiry, provide a critical framework for examining the new role played by GAI within the Humanities. By framing these tools in the context of Burkean rhetorical theory, …

Implementing Hourly Rounding In Reducing The Rate Of Falls Among Older Adults In Long-Term Care Facilities, Alfred Amaechi
Implementing Hourly Rounding In Reducing The Rate Of Falls Among Older Adults In Long-Term Care Facilities, Alfred Amaechi
DNP Projects
Background
Falls are events with a resultant effect of an individual accidentally or unintentionally coming to rest on the floor, ground, or other lower level; also, injuries sustained from falls may be fatal or non-fatal depending on the severity of the fall (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths globally; each year, an estimated 684 000 individuals die from falls globally, of which over 80% are in low- and middle-income countries; adults older than 60 years of age suffer the greatest number of fatal falls, and 37.3 million falls that are severe …
Black Social Workers Use Of Racial Identity And Self Concept In The Workplace, Shielah Monique Deblanc
Black Social Workers Use Of Racial Identity And Self Concept In The Workplace, Shielah Monique Deblanc
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Navigating the Black professional identity in U.S. work environments poses challenges for social workers, with limited research addressing racial salience, power dynamics, and self-concept within their specific workplace contexts. Using self-concept theory, and the multidimensional model of racial identity as theoretical and conceptual frameworks, the purpose of this research was to examine Black social workers’ attitudes about self-concept using racial salience, power distance, and employee tenure as predictors. Using web-based surveys to collect data, a purposive sample of 77 participants were used to complete demographic information, a measure of centrality to gauge racial salience Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity, a …
Out Of Place When Studying China’S Sex Industry, Margaret Boittin
Out Of Place When Studying China’S Sex Industry, Margaret Boittin
Articles & Book Chapters
The chapter explains how being out of place can paradoxically put one back in place – or exactly where one needs to be to achieve their research goals and values. The author, Margaret Boittin, is a lawyer and US-trained political scientist who works in a Canadian law faculty. She explains how being out of place is relative. She may not be out of place in North America as “a white woman with blond hair and blue eyes,” but she was obviously out of place when she was studying sex workers in China. Embracing this outsider status also became the source …

Exploring Practices Of Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialst Physical Therapists In Addressing Needs Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Olga Chaikovsky
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
ABSTRACT
Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex condition affecting multiple domains of development. Physical Therapists (PTs) are members of the interprofessional team addressing the needs of individuals with ASD. A lack of uniformity in evidence-based assessments and practices employed by therapists to address the needs of children with ASD exists in the literature. PTs often implement approaches that are not evidence-based but rather learned from more experienced professionals or discovered by trial and error.
Pediatric clinical specialist physical therapists (PCSPTs) are PTs who possess advanced education and clinical skills in Pediatrics. As pediatric experts, PCSPTs play a major …
Do Focused Interests Support Word Learning? A Study With Autistic And Nonautistic Children, Sudha Arunachalam, Amelia Steele, Taisha Pelletier, Rhiannon Luyster
Do Focused Interests Support Word Learning? A Study With Autistic And Nonautistic Children, Sudha Arunachalam, Amelia Steele, Taisha Pelletier, Rhiannon Luyster
Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators
Although focused interests are often associated with a diagnosis of autism, they are common in nonautistic individuals as well. Previous studies have explored how these interests impact cognitive, social, and language development. While some research has suggested that strong interests can detract from learning (particularly for autistic children), newer research has indicated that they can be advantageous. In this pre-registered study, we asked whether focused interests support word learning in 44 autistic children and a vocabulary-matched sample of 44 nonautistic children (mean ages 58 and 34 months respectively). In a word-learning task administered over Zoom, children were exposed to an …
Strengthening National Infrastructure Resilience, Alan Saquella
Strengthening National Infrastructure Resilience, Alan Saquella
Publications
The current landscape of critical infrastructure organizations is undergoing a paradigm shift, characterized by dynamic workforce structures that include remote, hybrid and diverse work settings, alongside generational transformations. However, this shift presents a formidable challenge — the persistent and escalating threat of insider attacks. Reports estimating the cost per insider threat incident at over $15 million underscore the urgency for a broad and thorough approach encompassing prevention, mitigation, investigation and reporting mechanisms.
The Process Of Restoring Personal Integrity: Mitigating The Emotional Cost Of Medical Errors, Marie M. Prothero
The Process Of Restoring Personal Integrity: Mitigating The Emotional Cost Of Medical Errors, Marie M. Prothero
Dissertations
This constructivist grounded-theory study was conducted to explore the emotional response to and recovery process following a medical error causing harm to a patient. The study participants were 37 registered nurses (30 women and 7 men), and unstructured interviews provided rich, detailed data. Through an inductive analysis of these errors, a taxonomy of errors is proposed. The Circumstance of Error Model was developed, and five distinct error circumstances were identified: accidental, unanticipated, distracted, unrecognized/unknown, and external. By linking the circumstances of error types with the recovery process, new insights were obtained. These insights resulted in a theory, reestablishing competency, that …
