In June 2008, the U.S.-based website Glassdoor.com began posting anonymous company reviews and salary data from current and former employees of various organizations. Doing so not only brought to the world information that had hitherto been restricted to private circles, it spontaneously prompted some organizations to alter their workplace practices (Dineen & Allen, 2016; Dube & Zhu, 2021). At the same time, Glassdoor’s very activities gave rise to a completely new source of data for exploring a wealth of management and organizational phenomena (e.g., Bermiss & McDonald, 2018; Rhee, 2024). As this example illustrates, new data sources can not only …

Mitigating Ai’S Harmful Effects In Developing Economies Through Contracting, A.B. Steinberg
Mitigating Ai’S Harmful Effects In Developing Economies Through Contracting, A.B. Steinberg
The International Law Review Association Student Forum
The global economic community must establish a new organization that helps to create contracting parameters to ensure that AI does not crash economies, namely those in the developing world that are most at risk.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) will revolutionize the global economy. While many debate the ramifications for developed economies, such as the United States, these effects will likely be increased productivity and the loss of jobs across the workforce. This comment argues that these effects will be even more profound in developing nations due to both AI in their direct economies and the downstream effects of automation. The possible …

Raining Hellfire: An Analysis On The Use Of White Phosphorus And Its International Regulation, Shaun Quirk
The International Law Review Association Student Forum
Chemical weapons, biological weapons, nuclear weapons, and substance-infused munitions are not new in the art of war. In fact, accounts of toxins and venoms date back to ancient times when bows and arrows were cutting-edge technology. But the existing frameworks regulating these weapons require immediate and more exacting scrutiny. In late 2023, Hamas reignited a generations-old conflict with Israel through a surprise attack. Shortly thereafter, global headlines reported Israel was deploying white phosphorus—a highly volatile substance—into Gaza. The potential devastation of white phosphorus is shocking, yet the existing legal frameworks governing its use are both ambiguous and overly lenient. This …

Russia And China’S Complicity In North Korea’S Human Rights Violations: Measures The U.S. Should Take To Intervene And Mitigate The Abuse, Cameron Kenyon
The International Law Review Association Student Forum
The complicity of Russia and China in North Korea’s (DPRK) human rights issues is incredibly concerning not only for the safety and well-being of North Korean citizens, but for world-wide security. Both China and Russia facilitate the DPRK human rights abuses by trading with North Korea irrespective of international sanctions, enabling human trafficking of North Koreans who have fled to China, and involuntarily repatriating refugees from the DPRK. Awareness of the DPRK human rights issues and Russia and China’s complicity, as well as active intervention, should be at the forefront of the U.S. human rights policy in order for the …

U.S. International Adoption Subsidies: Shining Light On The Dark History Of The Baby "Black Market", Rachel Briner
The International Law Review Association Student Forum
While international adoption is a beautiful concept in theory, it often leads to dark consequences. From its inception, human trafficking has enabled international adoptions. While the United States alone cannot dismantle the entire baby “black market” and the likely black market for children’s organs intertwined with it, the U.S. can remove its large contribution. By limiting the federal adoption subsidy to only domestic adoptions, the United States can ensure it only aids systems within its control and address the needs of its own children without homes more effectively. Many other authors have also noted various human trafficking and potential organ …

Protection From Warlords & Celebrities: How Anti-Slapp Legislation Is Making International Headway To Protect Free Speech, Olivia Augustat
The International Law Review Association Student Forum
Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) are increasingly being used by powerful individuals and entities to silence dissent and criticism, posing a significant threat to free speech globally. This misuse of legal systems undermines democratic principles by intimidating those who speak out on matters of public interest. My paper argues for the urgent need for effective Anti-SLAPP legislation, focusing on a comparative analysis of the U.S. and European Union (EU) approaches. While the U.S. has a fragmented but largely pro-defendant framework, the EU is moving toward an arguably vaguer but more unified, cross-border solution. This paper takes a unique approach …

OBJECTIVES: Perioperative stroke is the most dreaded complication of carotid artery interventions and can severely affect patients' quality of life. This study evaluated the impact of this event on mortality for patients undergoing interventional treatment of carotid artery stenosis with three different modalities.
METHODS: Patients undergoing carotid revascularization at participating Memorial Hermann Health System facilities were captured from 2003-2022. These patients were treated with either carotid endarterectomy (CEA), transfemoral carotid stenting (TF-CAS), or transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR). Perioperative outcomes, including stroke and mortality, as well as follow-up survival data at 6-month intervals, were analyzed and stratified per treatment modality.

Aortic dissection often results in chronic aneurysmal degeneration due to progressive false lumen expansion. Thoracic endovascular aortic repair and other techniques of vessel incorporation such as fenestrated-branched or parallel grafts have been increasingly used to treat chronic postdissection aneurysms. True lumen compression or a vessel origin from the false lumen can present considerable technical challenges. In these cases, the limited true lumen space can result in inadequate stent graft expansion or restrict the ability to reposition the device or manipulate catheters. Reentrance techniques can be used selectively to assist with target vessel catheterization. Transcatheter electrosurgical septotomy is a novel technique …

BACKGROUND: Affecting 2-4% of pregnancies, pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal death and morbidity worldwide. Using routinely available data, we aimed to develop and validate a novel machine learning-based and clinical setting-responsive time-of-disease model to rule out and rule in adverse maternal outcomes in women presenting with pre-eclampsia.
METHODS: We used health system, demographic, and clinical data from the day of first assessment with pre-eclampsia to predict a Delphi-derived composite outcome of maternal mortality or severe morbidity within 2 days. Machine learning methods, multiple imputation, and ten-fold cross-validation were used to fit models on a development dataset (75% of …

Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) is widely considered an excellent nutrient source for food and feed. Despite its economic importance, there is limited information on the impact of temperature on the bionomics of this cricket to guide its effective and sustainable mass production in its geographical range. The biological parameters of G. bimaculatus were investigated at eight different temperatures ranging from 20–40∘C. The Insect Life-Cycle Modelling (ILCYM) program was used to fit linear and non-linear functions to the data to describe the influence of temperature on life history parameters and its farmability under the current and projected climate for 2050. Mental Health Professionals' Perspectives On The Third Party When Treating Married Heterosexual Couples For Infidelity: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Suzanne M. Freid
Dissertations
No research seems to exist that focuses on how the nonexclusive spouse and the exclusive spouse discuss the third party in couple therapy for infidelity. Similarly, we know almost nothing about mental health professionals' perceptions of what the couple says and does, how the therapist responds to them, and what they perceive about the third party and their work with married, heterosexual couples. Eight licensed and experienced mental health professionals from the Austin, Texas community participated in this study grounded in Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Findings suggest that training programs fail to provide information and evidenced-based techniques for working with couples …

The Role Of The Ape1 Asp148glu Polymorphism On The Risk Of Acute Myeloid Leukemia In Iraqi Patients, Thamer Mouhi Jasiem, Rand Muhammed Abdul-Hussein Al-Husseini
Baghdad Science Journal
Acute myeloid leukemia is the most common hematological malignancy in adults. The uncontrolled proliferation of non-differentiating myeloid progenitors is a hallmark of this illness. Mutant cells form when DNA damage cannot be repaired by the cell's repair mechanisms. One of the DNA repair mechanisms, the base excision repair pathway. The study involved 70 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (37 females and 33 males) as well as 30 apparently healthy individuals as a control group. The gSYNCTM DNA Extraction Kit from Geneaid/Taiwan was used to extract DNA from entire blood samples from the study groups. The Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism-PCR method …

Digital images are one of the modern era's dominant sources of information and communication. However, an image can simply be altered with the existence of several tools for image editing. These altered images can transmit across platforms of social media to influence some people in society and may have both positive and negative effects. Therefore, the development of technology becomes a necessary issue to detect and localize a forgery in an image. Copy-move forgery (CMF) is one of the most popular forgeries. In CMF, the new forgery image is created by copying a part presented in an image and placing …

Corrosion is critical to a researcher since it has a substantial impact on both people's safety and the economy. A new approach based on a unique material has been employed to prevent rusting. Conducting polymer-composites are material types that show promise for anticorrosion by electrochemical synthesis of polyanethole(PA)/metals oxide nanocomposite (ZnO,TiO2) on Stainless Steel 304L (SS-304L) which plays as working electrode by using electropolymerization technique. The synthesized coating polymer was characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) checkups. The findings demonstrated that when compared to the blank SS- 304L, PA/Nano composite and PA provide the strongest …

Creating a series of maps, grouping ecological indicators, and assessing cities' environmental status are considered very relevant research tasks. A growing population in cities, the establishment of various industrial and production enterprises, and the use of vehicles all contribute to the degradation of the environment. Navoi region is a young administrative unit located in central Uzbekistan. Regarding industrial development, it ranks first among administrative units in the republic. Production in its cities, especially the high productivity of heavy industrial enterprises, ecological problems in various forms due to human pressure on the natural environment, and the health of the population - …
Association Between Direct Access Laws And Physical Therapy Use And The Effect Of Change In Physical Therapy Use On Subsequent Healthcare Spending, Utilization, And Opioid Use, Dakshu Jindal
Theses and Dissertations
Background
Physical therapy (PT) has been recommended as the first-line treatment for patients with incident musculoskeletal conditions without severe trauma. Initial or early use of PT may help address some of the nation’s most pressing health policy challenges, including escalating healthcare spending and an ongoing opioid epidemic, by encouraging the use of physical therapy as a substitute for expensive surgeries and the use of opioids. Yet, state scope of practice laws have historically restricted the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions to physicians. Traditionally, patients seeking care from a physical therapist had to obtain a referral from a physician first. …
