Reducing Hemoglobin A1c Using Diabetes Self-Management Education And Support (Dsmes) For Hispanic Adults In A Primary Care Setting, Gita Gyawali Sedai
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Background: Members of the Hispanic population have a 50% or higher chance of developing diabetes and often do so at a younger age than other adults in the United States (CDC, 2022a). Diabetes complications also impact the Hispanic population harder, with higher rates of kidney failure caused by diabetes, along with diabetes-related vision loss and blindness (CDC, 2022a). DSMES programs have shown significant improvements in A1C and blood sugar control in different settings (Powers et al., 2020). However, it has not been implemented in many primary care settings.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate …

Right, Left, Right: Dance Training Impacts On Postural Control, Mackenzie Griffith
Longwood Senior Theses
Background: Studies have shown a lack of definitive findings examining postural control amongst dominant and non-dominant stance limbs. Neuromuscular training may have limb dependent impacts and is a possible contributor across dance training, other athlete training, and active population members. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare postural control between dominant and nondominant single limb stances in trained dancers and compare those results with the single limb postural control of recreationally active college females. Methods: The study recruited 18 participants who met the set criteria for one of two groups: recreationally active females (N=10) and female dancers (N=8). …

The (Dis)Advantages Of Device Free Time: A Mixed -Methods Digital Detox Study, Sandrah Burrill
Longwood Senior Theses
Digital detox practices are periods of device restriction, reduction, or abstinence aimed to seek improvements in the negative outcomes associated with frequent device use. There are numerous gaps in digital detox literature including unsustainable periods of detox, imprecise definitions of digital detox, a lack of investigation into mediating mental health constructs, no collection of participant-driven qualitative data, and a failure to control for compensatory behaviors. Gaps like these could account for continued mixed findings in areas like anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction, salient to mental well-being. The present study aims to further parse the role that device-free time plays in …

Costimulatory Domains In Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cells Alter Serial Killing Efficacy Against Pediatric Rhabdomyosarcomas And Osteosarcomas, Kristen Wilkins
Longwood Senior Theses
Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy is a new promising therapy for hematopoietic malignancies. However, CAR T cells have yet to be successful in the treatment of solid tumors, including pediatric osteosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. Changing the structure of CAR T cell receptors has been considered as a way to enhance the targeting of solid tumors. One method of changing the structure of CAR T cells is by changing the costimulatory domain. Inclusion of various costimulatory domains may alter many functions of CAR T cells, including serial killing, which is an important function needed to overcome the immunosuppressive microenvironment of …
Multigenerational Consequences Of Environment And Loss On Maternal Behavior, Anxiety, Boldness, And Memory In Rats, Alayna Palamar
Multigenerational Consequences Of Environment And Loss On Maternal Behavior, Anxiety, Boldness, And Memory In Rats, Alayna Palamar
Longwood Senior Theses
Maternal behavior has long been studied for the implications it presents for offspring outcomes. In the present study, we examined the interplay between the positive effects of environmental enrichment and the negative consequences of loss – defined as a 50% litter cull – on both mothers and their offspring. In this multigenerational study, maternal Sprague Dawley rats were separated into one of four of the following conditions: enriched/control, enriched/loss, standard/control, and standard/loss. Maternal rats (P generation) were assessed using the following behavioral assays: Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) for anxiety-like behavior and boldness, Object Location Maze (OLM) for spatial memory, and …

Advancing Farmworkers’ Rights: An Environmental Justice Approach, Jessica Gilbert-Overland, Cassandra Bocanegra
Global Citizenship Pedagogy Community
In this workshop, we employ an environmental justice lens to examine the issues and working conditions that farmworkers experience in Western New York (WNY) and across the state more generally. Specifically, we delve into questions related to the ways that farmworkers in our region experience and access land, as well as the connections between today’s industrialized food system and farmworkers’ rights. Through discussion and art, we will interrogate related power dimensions, the health implications of climate change, and the impacts of neocolonial state, federal, and international policies that perpetuate unjust working conditions and enable ongoing resource extraction and enclosure. Together, …

Diagnostic stewardship seeks to improve ordering, collection, performance, and reporting of tests. Test results play an important role in reportable HAIs. The inclusion of HAIs in public reporting and pay for performance programs has highlighted the value of diagnostic stewardship as part of infection prevention initiatives. Inappropriate testing should be discouraged, and approaches that seek to alter testing solely to impact a reportable metric should be avoided. HAI definitions should be further adapted to new testing technologies, with focus on actionable and clinically relevant test results that will improve patient care.

Prevalence And Risk Factors Of Hikikomori In Young Adults In The Middle East, Harshil Paresh Shah
Prevalence And Risk Factors Of Hikikomori In Young Adults In The Middle East, Harshil Paresh Shah
Theses
Hikikomori, a form of severe social withdrawal that can occur without the presence of any other psychological disorder, was once thought to be a Japanese culture-bound phenomena. However, studies have emerged from several parts of the world showing that this may be a global issue. Extant literature suggests associations between hikikomori and behavioral addictions such as gaming addiction and Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU). Since there is a relative paucity of research examining this phenomenon in the Middle Eastern context, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of hikikomori in young adults of the Middle East. It …

An Intelligent Framework Towards Fully Autonomous Driving Fueled By Smart Roads, Muhammad Jalal Khan
Dissertations
Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are transforming next-generation autonomous mobility. These vehicles promise to increase road safety, improve traffic efficiency, reduce vehicle emissions, and enhance overall mobility. They achieve higher levels of Autonomous Driving (AD) by integrating sensors, communication technologies, computation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Apart from these advancements, significant gaps remain in integrating heterogeneous technologies and disciplines essential for optimizing AD. Therefore, the current solution approaches lack the capability to exploit intelligent road infrastructures and effectively orchestrate perceptual services for complex driving scenarios. The main objective of this dissertation is to address these challenges by proposing a novel end-to-end intelligent framework …

Nondelegation And The Legislative Versus Administrative Exactions Divide: Why Legislatively Imposed Exactions Do Not Require A More Searching Standard Of Review, Hunter Dominick
Fordham Law Review
As the United States continues to grow and urbanize, local governments have tried to manage this growth to mitigate the external impacts that new developments can cause. One method by which state and local governments seek to control growth within their borders is by imposing conditions on the issuance of building permits—otherwise known as exactions. Exactions, however, face federal constitutional limits under the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment, which applies to state and local governments through the Fourteenth Amendment.
In Nollan v. California Coastal Commission and Dolan v. City of Tigard, the U.S. Supreme Court restricted exactions in …

The early stages of construction projects play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the entire project life cycle. However, conventional early design practices have been facing significant challenges and limitations in recent times. These challenges include a lack of coordination among various disciplines, communication gaps, and poor decision-making. Unfortunately, these challenges often lead to increased costs, project delays, and change orders. To tackle these challenges, it is essential to adopt the latest technological advancements in the construction industry. This is especially important given the complexity of modern construction projects and the rapid construction growth. One of the most …
Friction Stir Welding Of Tube-To-Tubesheet And Spot Joints For Virgin And Recycled Thermoplastic Materials, Syed Haris Iftikhar
Friction Stir Welding Of Tube-To-Tubesheet And Spot Joints For Virgin And Recycled Thermoplastic Materials, Syed Haris Iftikhar
Dissertations
Thermoplastic materials are becoming popular, due to their chemically inert and anti-fouling properties, for use in industrial heat exchanger applications involving heating/cooling of highly reactive fluids like acids. A novel non-conventional joining framework, based on the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technique, is developed to create high-quality thermoplastic Tube-to-Tubesheet Joints (TTJs). The proposed technique has applications in the thermoplastic shell-and-tube heat exchanger and piping industries (as flange-to-pipe joints). The primary objective is to study the feasibility of the FSW technique for developing thermoplastic TTJs, followed by optimization of the process parameters and detailed material characterizations. This work used workpieces (tube, tubesheet) …

Innominate Artery Pseudoaneurysm From A Salter-Harris Fracture Of The Sternoclavicular Joint, Emily Y Fan, Santiago Abrill Zegarra, Jennifer Walker, Errol Mortimer, Jessica P Simons
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Fractures and dislocations of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) are uncommon, accounting for <5% of all shoulder girdle injuries. They are relatively more common in the pediatric population than in the adult population and can often present concurrently as a posteriorly displaced medial clavicular dislocation with a fracture through the unfused physis. It is especially important to recognize this injury, because its management and potential sequelae are very different from those for fractures of the clavicle shaft. This type of injury frequently requires closed or open operative management because fracture-dislocation of the SCJ can be associated with potentially serious complications such as pneumothorax, brachial plexus injury, vagus nerve injury, tracheal injury, and vascular compromise. Few case reports describe fracture-dislocation of the SCJ resulting in vascular injuries. We describe the case of a 17-year-old boy who sustained a blunt hockey injury resulting in a right physeal fracture-dislocation of the SCJ causing an innominate artery pseudoaneurysm. This was treated with excision of the pseudoaneurysm, bovine pericardial patch angioplasty repair of the innominate artery, and open reduction and internal fixation of the medial clavicular physeal fracture.

Research design and methods: The Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE) of adults with T2DM of < 10 years' duration, HbA1c 6.8-8.5%, and taking metformin monotherapy randomly assigned participants to add insulin glargine U-100, sulfonylurea glimepiride, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist liraglutide, or the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor sitagliptin. The Emotional Distress Substudy enrolled 1,739 GRADE participants (mean [SD] age 58.0 [10.2] years, 32% female, 56% non-Hispanic White, 18% non-Hispanic Black, 17% Hispanic) and assessed diabetes distress and depressive symptoms every 6 months. Analyses examined differences at 1 year and over the 3-year follow-up.
Results: Across treatments, diabetes distress (-0.24, P < 0.0001) and depressive symptoms (-0.67, P < 0.0001) decreased over 1 year. Diabetes distress was lower at 1 year for the glargine group than for the other groups combined (-0.10, P = 0.002). Diabetes distress was also lower for liraglutide than for glimepiride or sitagliptin (-0.10, P = 0.008). Over the 3-year follow-up, there were no significant group differences in total diabetes distress; interpersonal diabetes distress remained lower for those assigned to liraglutide. No significant differences were observed for depressive symptoms.
Conclusions: Contrary to expectations, this randomized trial found no evidence for a deleterious effect of basal insulin on emotional distress. Glargine lowered diabetes distress modestly at 1 year rather than increasing it. Liraglutide also reduced diabetes distress at 1 year. Results can inform treatment decisions for adults …

Objective: To evaluate whether baseline levels of depressive symptoms and diabetes-specific distress are associated with glycemic control in Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE), a large randomized controlled trial comparing the metabolic effects of four common glucose-lowering medications when combined with metformin in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Research design and methods: The primary and secondary outcomes were defined as an HbA1c value ≥7%, subsequently confirmed, and an HbA1c value >7.5%, subsequently confirmed, respectively. Separate Cox proportional hazards models assessed the association between baseline levels of each exposure of interest (depressive symptoms measured with …
