Due Process In Anti-Doping Proceedings Within The International Olympic Committee And Professional Tennis Associations, Katherine Jakeway

The International Law Review Association Student Forum

Today, professional athletes across the globe are subjected to rigorous drug testing in an attempt to eradicate the use of performance enhancing substances in sports. Many professional sports tours, including tennis, work closely with the International Olympic Committee and World Anti-Doping Agency to monitor and address doping violations. Although anti-doping rules are important to the safety of professional athletes, the current enforcement of anti-doping rules creates due process concerns for athletes that test positive for banned substances. This article specifically argues that the strict scrutiny sanction which bans athletes from professional play for even an unknowing or accidental doping violation …

Implementation Of A Human Trafficking Screening Tool In An Immigrant Services Organization, Cassandra Cooper Apr 2024

Implementation Of A Human Trafficking Screening Tool In An Immigrant Services Organization, Cassandra Cooper

DNP Projects

Background

Human trafficking (HT) is a public health problem that advances the spread of disease and mental health issues and affects vulnerable populations including immigrants. HT screening tools are more reliable than clinical judgment in identifying HT victims, as even victims themselves are sometimes unaware of their own victimhood. To reduce the instances of victims being missed, HT screening tools have been validated to identify victims without the influence of personal bias.

Project Goals

1. Choose and implement a HT education module for staff.

2. Implement the AHTST for all new arrivals and from the months of November 2023 through …

Trumbauer, Victoria P. Noffsinger, Luke W. Meredith, Frederick C. De Beer, Adam E. Mullick, Nancy R. Webb, Dennis G. Karounos, Lisa R. Tannock

Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications

Background and aims: Obesity increases the risk for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) in humans and enhances angiotensin II (AngII)-induced AAA formation in C57BL/6 mice. We reported that deficiency of Serum Amyloid A (SAA) significantly reduces AngII-induced inflammation and AAA in both hyperlipidemic apoE-deficient and obese C57BL/6 mice. The aim of this study is to investigate whether SAA plays a role in the progression of early AAA in obese C57BL/6 mice.

Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (60% kcal as fat) throughout the study. After 4 months of diet, the mice were infused with AngII until the end …

Beyond Technology: Social Predictors Of Energy Efficiency In Industrial Facilities, Garret B. Cowdery Apr 2024

Beyond Technology: Social Predictors Of Energy Efficiency In Industrial Facilities, Garret B. Cowdery

Honors Theses

Energy is the lifeblood of the industrialized world with electrical energy expected by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to increase 25% between 2016 to 2050 in the United States. Combined with the ever-present climate crisis, energy-efficient buildings are becoming increasingly important to conserve resources and alleviate strain on aging energy systems. The Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) program through the US Department of Energy aims to reduce the consumption of large, single-site energy users, industrial and commercial buildings, through comprehensive energy audits. Such investigations find that energy-efficient structures are a technological challenge as much as social. The mentality of building …

Behavioral Responses Of Two Color Morphs Of The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon Cinereus) To Novel Urban Environments, Amy Q. Friemoth Apr 2024

Behavioral Responses Of Two Color Morphs Of The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon Cinereus) To Novel Urban Environments, Amy Q. Friemoth

Honors Theses

Human modified landscapes can provide challenging new environments that can lead to rapid changes in species traits. In temperate forest ecosystems, salamanders play a critical role in forest floor dynamics, but populations are now faced with rapid habitat change, which can lead to local extinction events unless species can adapt behaviorally. The Eastern Red-backed Salamander, Plethodon cinereus, is the most common salamander species in the northeastern United States and can serve as a model species for examining the effects of anthropogenic change. Further, the Eastern Red-backed Salamander poses two common color morphs (striped and unstriped) that appear to differ in …

Selective Evolution Of Lithium Ions By Shewanella Loihica, Gabrielle A. Kozurek Apr 2024

Selective Evolution Of Lithium Ions By Shewanella Loihica, Gabrielle A. Kozurek

Honors Theses

The prevalent use of lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics poses a significant sustainability challenge to both manufacturing and source availability over the next 50 years. There are several methods to extract lithium from salt water that are commercially available but require caustic reagents and environmental hazards. However, several lithium-resistant bacteria can precipitate or mineralize lithium ions into a reduced form of lithium that can be processed readily into a lithium source material for batteries. The goal of this project was to culture, characterize, and selectively evolve Shewanlla loihica using lithium-ion concentration changes both aerobically and anaerobically. This strain has published …

Identifying The Effects Of Environmental Conditions On Listeria Monocytogenes Fitness And Pathogenesis Modified By Transcription Factor Cody, Elizabeth K. Herr

Honors Theses

Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen with the capability of causing severe illness in individuals who consume contaminated foods. Many foods have been found to harbor the bacterium, but dairy products, produce, and other prepackaged foods are particularly susceptible to contamination. Contaminated foods are exposed to a variety of environmental conditions during packaging, processing, consumption, and digestion, all of which play an essential role in modulating the survival and pathogenesis of L. monocytogenes. Conditions of particular interest include cold storage, presence of food additives, and activity of antimicrobial enzymes such as lysozyme. My honors thesis research has focused on elucidating how …

The Effects Of Fatigue On Landing Forces In Competitive Female Irish Dancers, Anna G. Robinson Apr 2024

The Effects Of Fatigue On Landing Forces In Competitive Female Irish Dancers, Anna G. Robinson

Honors Theses

Lower extremity injuries are highly prevalent within the Irish dance population, yet research surrounding potential determinants is scarce. Many movements, particularly jumps, in Irish dance are constituted by a one-foot landing with the ankle in a plantarflexed position and the knee fully extended. This unique landing technique is contrary to other forms of dance, such as ballet, where landings typically allow for some knee flexion in a plie-like position. Subsequently, this aesthetic constraint requires large amounts of strength and balance, in addition to forcing the structures of the foot and ankle to absorb the entire shock of the landing. This …

Improving The Market For Homeowners Insurance, Jay M. Feinman Apr 2024

Improving The Market For Homeowners Insurance, Jay M. Feinman

Connecticut Insurance Law Journal

Markets need information, and better information produces better markets. Consumers need information about products’ features, price, and quality to shop effectively. When they have that information, their buying choices spur competition that produces better products with desirable features at lower prices. The market for homeowners insurance provides reasonable information on price but lacks basic information about the features of policies and company quality. Consumers have little access to information about the coverage terms of policies being offered or the quality of companies that are offering them, so they often make poor choices in purchasing homeowners insurance. The results can be …

Keeping All American Workers Paid And Employed? How Small Businesses With Independent Contractors Feel Slighted By The Paycheck Protection Program And What Can Be Done, Mary Claire Davis

West Virginia Law Review

Imagine it is late March 2020, and you own and manage a small transportation company that employs independent contractor drivers. In addition to managing the upheaval that has occurred to all small businesses across the country with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, you worry that your workers will not be able to keep food on the table. You hear about a new government program—the Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”) created by legislation known as the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”)—that is meant to “keep[] American workers paid and employed.” You understand that the United States Small …

The United States has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world. Alarmingly, West Virginia’s incarceration rate is even higher. West Virginia’s staggering incarceration rate can largely be attributed to the increased criminalization and prosecution of individuals experiencing addiction. This Note considers what actions can be taken to limit incarceration and recidivism in West Virginia. The solutions proposed by this Note also aim to limit the collateral consequences of incarceration in West Virginia because many of West Virginia’s current issues are only exacerbated by incarceration. This Note reviews alternative justice methods and notable alternative justice courts across the …
