User Fee Programs, Erika Lietzan Apr 2024

User Fee Programs, Erika Lietzan

Faculty Publications

A user fee is a fee assessed by the government when it provides a good or service to a private party. Classic examples include the fee to enter Yellowstone National Park and payment to the U.S. Postal Service for a first-class postage stamp. In these transactions, the government provides a specific benefit to an identifiable recipient, who pays the fee. Although the federal government has assessed user fees since this country's founding, broad authorizing legislation in the middle of the 20th century made it possible for agencies to craft user fee programs on their own initiative. Interest in relying on …

Modernizing The Medical Malpractice Standard Of Care, Philip G. Peters Jr. Apr 2024

Modernizing The Medical Malpractice Standard Of Care, Philip G. Peters Jr.

Faculty Publications

The standard of care for health care providers proposed by section 5 of the Restatement of the Law Third, Torts: Medical Malpractice marks a fundamental shift in the American Law Institute's position on professional tort liability. According to both conventional wisdom and prior Restatement provisions, the standard of care for physicians is determined by their customary practices. Professionals alone are given the unique privilege to set their own legal standard of care. However, the proposed section 5 departs from this position. Instead, reasonable care for health care providers is defined as conduct "regarded as competent" by medical peers. Customary practices …

Best Practices: Using Semiotics In Environmental Storytelling, Conger He

Level Design Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores an aspect of environmental storytelling known as “semiotics.” Semiotics conveys information and relevant interconnections to an individual through visual representations. There are diverse types of semiotic elements, including symbols, icons, and indexes. The researcher examined the use of semiotics in video games and derived seven best practices for conveying story beats and relaying aspects of a video game’s narrative. The researcher implemented these semiotic-related practices into a custom Fallout 4 level, gathered testers to play the level, and asked the testers to give their opinions on the experience. The researcher analysed the tester’s feedback to conclude whether …

Cortisol Production In Female Soccer Players, Katelyn Seagraves Apr 2024

Cortisol Production In Female Soccer Players, Katelyn Seagraves

Honors Projects

Cortisol is released from the adrenal glands when there is an apparent stressor. Exercise, while beneficial, is seen as stress to the body and incites increased cortisol release. Cortisol is known to increase with exercise, and higher-intensity exercise tends to raise cortisol more compared to lower intensities. However, less is known about interval training and cortisol concentrations.

This review of literature dives into the background of cortisol: how it's produced, what systems it regulates, and differences in production based on gender, stressors, exercise intensity, and duration. This paper identifies some knowledge gaps and links training intensities in soccer to cortisol …

Proper forms of exercise can be used by individuals with Parkinson's to reduce the effects of the disease. Our study utilized a unique eccentric lower body exercise program to improve gait, balance, mood, and movement initiation/control for people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The twice weekly, 12 week exercise regime was evaluated through a variety of biomechanical, physiological and psychological measurements conducted throughout each of the training sessions. An analysis of the measures indicated that the exercise protocol did provide positive outcomes related to gait, balance, mood, and movement initiation/control for individuals that participated in our study

Investigating The Role Of Dna Interval V375 In Spore Killing By Neurospora Crassa Sk-3, Michael Marcheschi Apr 2024

Investigating The Role Of Dna Interval V375 In Spore Killing By Neurospora Crassa Sk-3, Michael Marcheschi

Senior Theses – Biological Sciences

Meiotic drive elements, sometimes called selfish genes, are genetic elements that are passed on to their offspring more favorably than other genes. Meiotic drive elements have been observed in many organisms, including fungi of the Neurospora genus. Three different meiotic drive elements, called Spore killers, have been identified in Neurospora fungi. One of these Spore killers is called Spore killer 3 (Sk-3), and the molecular mechanism by which Sk-3 acts as a meiotic drive element is poorly understood. Previous work has identified a genetic locus within Sk-3 that may control spore killing. In this thesis, I investigate an …

Studying A Spore Killing Gene In Neurospora Crassa, Jalen Lee Apr 2024

Studying A Spore Killing Gene In Neurospora Crassa, Jalen Lee

Senior Theses – Biological Sciences

Some isolates of the fungus Neurospora crassa possess a chromosomal factor that causes spore killing, leading to death of ascospores. It has been shown that these chromosomal factors are genetic elements called spore killers. For example, if a cross is performed between a parent with an Sk-S (sensitive) allele and a parent with an Sk-K (killer) allele, the cross will produce half viable offspring and half inviable offspring, where the inviable half has been killed by spore killing. This phenomenon can be explained by meiotic drive, wherein a selfish gene disrupts the randomness of sexual transmission, favoring its own success. …

Climate Change And Internal Displacement In Colombia: Chronicle Of A Tragedy Foretold, Camila Bustos Apr 2024

Climate Change And Internal Displacement In Colombia: Chronicle Of A Tragedy Foretold, Camila Bustos

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

One of the key challenges stemming from climate change will be climate displacement, as sudden and gradual events disrupt livelihoods and force millions to leave their homes. Despite the existing scholarship's focus on cross-border movement, the majority of climate displaced people will move internally instead of or before seeking refuge outside their nation's borders. What obligations do states owe to their citizens when those states have historically not been emitters but have still failed to protect domestic populations from displacement related to environmental disasters and climate change impacts? Through exploring the disaster management framework in Colombia and conducting a case …

An Examination Of Specific Learning Disability Identification Post Participation In The Michigan Department Of Education Transformation Zone, Erin E. Senkowski

Dissertations

The identification of students with specific learning disabilities has evolved since the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) in 2004. This reauthorization gave state agencies parameters that disallowed using the severe discrepancy model for identification as a stand-alone method. In response to this change, Michigan provided Intermediate and local school districts with further guidance that disallowed the use of the severe discrepancy model for identifying children with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) and instead required Intermediate School Districts, on behalf of their local districts, to choose one of three models, including Patterns of Strengths and Weakness (PSW), …

Introduction: Patients' functional status assesses their independence in performing activities of daily living, including basic ADLs (bADL), and more complex instrumental activities (iADL). Existing studies have discovered that patients' functional status is a strong predictor of health outcomes, particularly in older adults. Depite their usefulness, much of the functional status information is stored in electronic health records (EHRs) in either semi-structured or free text formats. This indicates the pressing need to leverage computational approaches such as natural language processing (NLP) to accelerate the curation of functional status information. In this study, we introduced FedFSA, a hybrid and federated NLP framework …

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a leading infectious cause of birth defects and the most common opportunistic infection that causes life-threatening diseases post-transplantation; however, an effective vaccine remains elusive. V160 is a live-attenuated replication defective HCMV vaccine that showed a 42.4% efficacy against primary HCMV infection among seronegative women in a phase 2b clinical trial. Here, we integrated the multicolor flow cytometry, longitudinal T cell receptor (TCR) sequencing, and single-cell RNA/TCR sequencing approaches to characterize the magnitude, phenotype, and functional quality of human T cell responses to V160. We demonstrated that V160 de novo induces IE-1 and pp65 specific durable polyfunctional …
