Round Ii: Exploring The Experiences Of Black, First-Generation Graduate And Professional Students At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Derrick D. Lathan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This phenomenological study explores the experiences of Black, first-generation (first-gen) students pursuing advanced degrees at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), following the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice movements like Black Lives Matter. Additionally, this study examines the present-day motivations to pursue advanced degrees, particularly the benefits of doing so at an HBCU. The main research question guiding this study is: What are the experiences of Black, first-gen graduate and professional students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs)? The sub-questions are:

  1. How do Black, first-gen graduate and professional students describe being a first-gen student?
  2. What barriers and supports impact …

Addition And Subtraction: Coral Reproduction And Disease In A Changing Ocean, Ashley Rossin Apr 2024

Addition And Subtraction: Coral Reproduction And Disease In A Changing Ocean, Ashley Rossin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Marine diseases are changing the landscapes of coral reefs particularly throughout the Western Atlantic. Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) swept through this region impacting at least 22 stony coral species. White plague (WP) is a more ephemeral disease, but still has a significant impact on coral reef health and perseverance, especially under a changing ocean. While these impacts are seen on the reef-scale, we can zoom into the tissue-level to identify disease markers for both diseases and identify their differences. This has ramifications for disease intervention, as well as mitigation strategies. Despite continuous disease outbreaks, healthy corals persist and …

Influence Of Community Characteristics On Urban Forest Management Programs In New York State, J. Rebecca Hargrave, Rick W. Harper, Brett J. Butler, Jamie T. Mullins Apr 2024

Influence Of Community Characteristics On Urban Forest Management Programs In New York State, J. Rebecca Hargrave, Rick W. Harper, Brett J. Butler, Jamie T. Mullins

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

US state and federal urban forest management agencies endeavor to support municipal forestry programs. However, the variation in programs within and among states may complicate support delivery. Municipal programs are often categorized by population size and community affluence to identify common characteristics and needs and facilitate support. To describe local urban forest management programs in New York State, a survey of municipalities gathered information on urban forest management program components, intentions, and needs. In addition to examining the contributions of population size and affluence, this study also evaluated the influence of metropolitan areas on programs in small municipalities and compared …

Overlooked Psychometrics: An Examination Of The Construct Validity Of The Level Of Service/Case Management Inventory (Ls/Cmi), Agnieszka M. Nogalska

Student Theses

Construct validity is an important and under-examined source of evidence contributing to the psychometric properties of risk assessment instruments. This study assessed the construct and predictive validities of the LS/CMI examining a sample of 95 incarcerated male participants in the Northeastern United States. Results support a two-factor structure for the instrument, with the Criminal History, Education/Employment, Procriminal Attitude, and Antisocial Pattern subscales demonstrating convergence with other well-validated measures of these constructs. The results further suggest relatively weak discriminative ability for predicting recidivism (AUC = 0.67). Further research examining and integrating the construct and predictive validity of the LS/CMI specifically is …

Comparative Analysis Of Time Series Models On U.S. Stock And Exchange Rates: Bayesian Estimation Of Time Series Error Term Model Versus Machine Learning Approaches, Young Keun Yang Apr 2024

Comparative Analysis Of Time Series Models On U.S. Stock And Exchange Rates: Bayesian Estimation Of Time Series Error Term Model Versus Machine Learning Approaches, Young Keun Yang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study presents a comparative analysis of contemporary applications of time series models, focusing on the Bayesian approach. In contrast to many nonparametric studies, the Bayesian approach circumvents the common issue of bandwidth selection by offering systematic estimation and avoiding ad hoc methods. Specifically, we delve into the Bayesian approach for estimating the autocovariance function of a time series model’s error term. Traditional time series models often make the unrealistic assumption of a constant error term. Furthermore, models such as autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) and general autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) address the limitation of constant variance by assuming an autoregressive …

Remote Sensing Of Residential Landscape Irrigation In Weber County, Utah, Annelise Marie Capener Apr 2024

Remote Sensing Of Residential Landscape Irrigation In Weber County, Utah, Annelise Marie Capener

Theses and Dissertations

Irrigation of residential properties in urban settings is typified by small and irregular areas, many untrained water users, limited end-use metering, and differing groundcover in contrast to agricultural settings. This makes analyzing irrigation patterns to promote efficient water use challenging. Analysis of Irrigation by Remote Sensing (AIRS) combines multispectral aerial imagery, evapotranspiration data, and ground-truthed measurements to overcome these challenges. We demonstrate the application of AIRS on eight neighborhoods in West Haven, Utah, using 0.6 m National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) and 0.07 m drone imagery, reference evapotranspiration (ET), and water meter data from Weber Basin Water Conservancy District (WBWCD). …

The authors reply: The Jarisch–Herxheimer reaction is an underreported and often-over-looked sequela of antimicrobial therapy in persons with spirochetal disease and is caused by the release of treponemal constituents.1 Sandoval’s description of the clinical manifestations of this reaction is an important reminder for clinicians to recognize the reaction and avoid the pitfalls of incorrectly diagnosing it as an allergic reaction to penicillin; it also highlights a critical aspect of care for persons with syphilis, including neonates with congenital syphilis.

Climate Protest Scarcity In East Asia: Cross-Country Analysis Using Resource Mobilization Theory, Hikaru Komatsu, Yi-Huan Hsieh Apr 2024

Climate Protest Scarcity In East Asia: Cross-Country Analysis Using Resource Mobilization Theory, Hikaru Komatsu, Yi-Huan Hsieh

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Climate protests have been recognized as a catalyst for social transformation. Previous studies focused on protests in Western countries where protests were abundant. Few studies paid attention to regions where protests were scarce. As a first step towards understanding the reasons for climate protest scarcity in East Asia, we used Resource Mobilization Theory and explored factors correlated with climate protest significance among different countries. In addition to confirming factors already identified in previous studies (e.g., the density of non-governmental organizations), we uncovered two novel factors: working hours and trust in strangers. By examining these correlations, we discuss potential mechanisms underlying …

Profiling Of Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Subtype Expression And Resulting Susceptibility To Targeted Osmotic Lysis In Cancer, Spencer Gerard Lemoine Apr 2024

Profiling Of Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Subtype Expression And Resulting Susceptibility To Targeted Osmotic Lysis In Cancer, Spencer Gerard Lemoine

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cancer is a disease characterized by a wide array of dysregulated cellular function, activity, and growth. At times, specific dysregulations associated with cancer can be exploited as avenues of potential treatment. The sodium handling mechanisms and their associated proteins in cancer have received closer attention recently closely as such a potential mechanism to exploit for treating advanced cancer. Some novel treatments aim to inhibit the expression or activity of these sodium handling proteins in an attempt to prevent the cancer from advancing or becoming more aggressive; however, such approaches have had limited success. Targeted osmotic lysis (TOL) is a new …

The Clinical Implications Of Kras Mutations And Variant Allele Frequencies In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Faria Nusrat, Akshay Khanna, Aditi Jain, Wei Jiang, Harish Lavu, Charles Yeo, Wilbur Bowne, Avinoam Nevler

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

The KRAS proto-oncogene is a major driver of pancreatic tumorigenesis and is nearly ubiquitously mutated in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). KRAS point mutations are detected in over 90% of PDAC cases, and these mutations have been shown to be associated with worse therapy response and overall survival. Pathogenic KRAS mutations are mostly limited to codons 12, 13 and 61, with G12D, G12V, G12R, Q61H, and G13D accounting for approximately 95% of the mutant cases. Emerging data have shown the importance of specific mutant subtypes, as well as KRAS variant allele frequency on clinical prognosis. Furthermore, novel technologies and therapies are …

California regulates pork; does it offend the Constitution that pork producers in other states must comply with its regulations if they want to sell Californians pork? In National Pork Producers Council v. Ross, the Supreme Court emerged sharply divided in its approach to the practical extraterritorial spillover effect of the in-state regulations of a tantalizing market. Although a fractured majority of the Court upheld California’s Proposition 12 against a dormant Commerce Clause challenge, at least five Justices registered profound discomfort, with one dissenter expressly inviting consideration of the problem through the lens of other clauses. This Article analyzes “the …

Formulation, Characterization, And In Vivo Immunogenicity Evaluation Of Heat-Stabilized Dissolvable Polymeric Microneedles, Aidan Lane Leyba

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Since its introduction, vaccination has improved health outcomes tremendously. However, modern vaccination efforts are still difficult to implement, particularly in developing countries with warm climates. This includes complex and expensive cold-chain management of vaccines to maintain stability, a lack of medical personnel to administer parental vaccines, and needle phobia. As an alternative, dissolvable microneedles have recently been studied for their simple and painless application. In this thesis, I present a novel manufacturing process for polymer-based dissolvable microneedles, loaded with virus-like particles vaccines conjugated to TRIO or Sialokinin peptides to target malaria and arboviruses, respectively. We have performed multiple characterization studies …

Threatened shark species are caught in large numbers by artisanal and commercial fisheries and traded globally. Monitoring both which shark species are caught and sold in fisheries, and the export of CITES-restricted products, are essential in reducing illegal fishing. Current methods for species identification rely on visual examination by experts or DNA barcoding techniques requiring specialist laboratory facilities and trained personnel. The need for specialist equipment and/or input from experts means many markets are currently not monitored. We have developed a paper-based Lab-on-A-Chip (LOC) to facilitate identification of three threatened and CITES-listed sharks, bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus), pelagic thresher (A. …
